Investigation Of Child Headed Households In Mozambique, Africa, Gerald Cochran, Jini Roby
Investigation Of Child Headed Households In Mozambique, Africa, Gerald Cochran, Jini Roby
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Child headed households (CHHs) are homes lead by “…children [who] live alone and manage the household without guidance and economic support from adults” (Aspaas, 1999, p. 202). This definition may or may not exclude adults as residents of the home. Some CHHs have adults residing in the home, but the child most certainly is the leader and the responsible one of the home. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has spread across the African continent causing children to be left as orphans and/or left to care for themselves and others (Foster, Shakespeare, Chinemana, Jackson, Gregson, Marange, & Mashumba, 1995). However, HIV/AIDS is not …

Introduction: Hypertension a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is the most widely recognized modifiable risk factor for this disease. There is little information on the prevalence and risk factors for hypertension in Zambia, and in particular in rural areas of the country. In order to contribute to the existing global literature on hypertension, particularly in rural Zambia, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence of hypertension and its correlates in two rural districts of Zambia, namely Kaoma and Kasama. Methods: A cross-sectional study using a modified World Health Organization (WHO) global non communicable diseases (NCD) surveillance initiative …

To determine a molecular basis for prognostic differences in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), we employed a combinatorial network analysis framework to exhaustively search for molecular patterns in protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. We identified a dysregulated molecular signature distinguishing short-term (survival< 225 days) from long-term (survival>635 days) survivors of GBM using whole genome expression data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). A 50-gene subnetwork signature achieved 80% prediction accuracy when tested against an independent gene expression dataset. Functional annotations for the subnetwork signature included "protein kinase cascade," "IκB kinase/NFκB cascade," and "regulation of programmed cell death" - all of which were not significant in signatures of …

inear growth from birth to 2 years of children enrolled in the World Health Organization Multicentre Growth Reference Study was similar despite substantial parental height differences among the six study sites. Within-site variability in child length attributable to parental height was estimated by repeated measures analysis of variance using generalized linear models. This approach was also used to examine relationships among selected traits (e.g. breastfeeding duration and child morbidity) and linear growth between 6 and 24 months of age. Differences in intergenerational adult heights were evaluated within sites by comparing mid-parental heights (average of the mother's and father's heights) to …
Weight Change In College Freshmen: Personal, Interpersonal And Situational Influences, Kristin Kuhlmann
Weight Change In College Freshmen: Personal, Interpersonal And Situational Influences, Kristin Kuhlmann
Nursing ETDs
Obesity has become the most significant noninfectious health risk in the United States, and the major causes of death and disability are shifting to chronic, non-communicable health conditions that are largely attributable to physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, and other diet-related factors. Among children and adolescents, the overweight/obesity rate is approaching 32%, with 17.9% of adolescents becoming obese. While the obesity rate has doubled in all age groups in the United States, it has tripled among young adults aged 18 to 28 years, and 70% of adolescents who are at a healthy weight will become overweight or obese as adults. …

Children's Self Perception Of Weight, Carolyn Montoya
Nursing ETDs
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are differences in children’s self-perceptions of weight based on age, gender, actual body mass index (BMI) category, grade level, and ethnicity compared with their clinically measured BMI and to determine the association of gender, age, grade level, race/ethnicity, and actual BMI category with their perception of ideal BMI category. A total of 424 children from a rural community in New Mexico, aged 8 to 11 years and in Grades 3 through 5, participated in this study. Of this sample 70% (n = 299) is Hispanic; 19% (n = 80) is …
Role Of Buddhist Spiritual Practice In The Lives And Health Of Buddhist Nuns Living With A Chronic Illness In Sri Lanka, Sunny Wijesinghe
Role Of Buddhist Spiritual Practice In The Lives And Health Of Buddhist Nuns Living With A Chronic Illness In Sri Lanka, Sunny Wijesinghe
Nursing ETDs
This study focused on the role of Buddhist spiritual practice in the lives and health of Sri Lankan Buddhist nuns with a chronic illness. The concept of spirituality has emerged recurrently in research as a means to cope with chronic illness. The question as to whether Buddhism, as observed in traditionally Buddhist countries, influences coping in chronic illness, has received little attention. Buddhism covers several sects and even within the same sect practices vary depending on each socio-cultural environment. Any attempt to study Buddhism's role in chronic illness requires isolating not only a sect, but also a country in which …

Sharing Cultures: Destination Zambia, Erica Williams, Dr. Dale Cressman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My project began with a flight to Lusaka, Zambia with a non-profit organization based in America Fork, Mothers Without Borders. The program consisted of daily service activities, nightly dinners with a Zambian family, and lodging in a hostel in Lusaka. Every morning we rode a bus to a government school in Lusaka, where we taught classes in nutrition, first aid, hygiene, HIV/AIDS prevention, arts and crafts, and recreation. I personally taught hygiene, using glitter transferred from hand to hand to show how germs move and demonstrating washing hands removes germs. It was amazing how minimal their understanding was about basic …

Supporting Catholic Education Through Effective School/University Partnerships: Two Models From The 2012 Catholic Higher Education Collaborative Conference, William A. Henk, Jennifer Maney, Kevin Baxter, Frank Montejano
Journal of Catholic Education
The following article contains two essays based on presentations to the 2012 CHEC conference on Catholic school governance held at Marquette University in October 2012. The essays outline two models of deep collaboration between Catholic institutions of higher education and Catholic K-12 schools designed to support and foster improvements in Catholic education. The first essay, “Higher Education Working Together to Help Catholic Schools: The Greater Milwaukee Catholic Education Consortium,” written by William A. Henk and Jennifer A. Maney, provides an overview of the Greater Milwaukee Catholic Education Consortium (GMCEC), an ongoing collaborative effort between the archdiocese of Milwaukee and the …

Neoliberalism And University Education In Sub-Saharan Africa, James R. Ochwa-Echel
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
This article reviews the history of university development in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and discusses the impact of neoliberal policies. This will be followed by an examination of the problems facing universities in the region. The following questions will be explored: (a) Are the existing universities in SSA serving the development needs of the region? (b) Are these universities up to the task of moving SSA out of the predicaments it faces such as famine, HIV/AIDS, poverty, diseases, debt, and human rights abuses? Finally, the article argues that for universities to play a role in the development of the region, a …

The Ral Exchange Factor Rgl2 Promotes Cardiomyocyte Survival And Inhibits Cardiac Fibrosis, Rebecca L. Scotland, Leah Allen, Leah J. Hennings, Ginell R. Post, Steven R. Post
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
Cardiomyocytes compensate to acute cardiac stress by increasing in size and contractile function. However, prolonged stress leads to a decompensated response characterized by cardiomyocyte death, tissue fibrosis and loss of cardiac function. Identifying approaches to inhibit this transition to a decompensated response may reveal important targets for treating heart failure. The Ral guanine nucleotide disassociation (RalGDS) proteins are Ras-interacting proteins that are upregulated by hypertrophic stimuli. The Ral guanine nucleotide dissociation stimulator-like 2 (Rgl2) is a member of the RalGDS family that modulates expression of hypertrophic genes in cardiomyocytes. However, the pathophysiologic consequence of increased Rgl2 expression in cardiomyoctyes remains …

Assessment Of The Training And Continuing Education Needs Of A Regional Public Health Workforce, Bethany Kies, Amber T. Loos
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
A large Midwestern university recently received accreditation for its Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). Requirements of the accreditation include the periodic assessment of the regional public health workforce’s professional development needs and the delivery of training and continuing education to meet those needs. To that end, this study’s primary purpose was to describe the professional development needs of the regional public health workforce and to develop recommendations for the provision of professional development activities to meet those needs. Fifty-eight respondents from 27 regional public health departments and 7 regional …
