Food Web Impacts Of The Invasive New Zealand Mudsnail In An Estuarine System, Amanda L. Kelley Sep 2013

Food Web Impacts Of The Invasive New Zealand Mudsnail In An Estuarine System, Amanda L. Kelley

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

Non-indigenous species (hereafter NIS) have long been recognized as adversely affecting habitats they invade. While many of their documented ecological impacts have been to specific species, namely prey, they may impact whole food webs. Both vertebrate and invertebrate NIS have been present in the Columbia River since the mid 1800’s. The New Zealand mudsnail, (Potamopyrgus antipodarum, hereafter NZMS) was first reported in the Columbia River Estuary in 1995. This typically freshwater NIS invaded Youngs Bay, a shallow embayment within the Columbia River estuary system, and has proliferated within this benthic community. To date, there have been no inquiries into the …

The Relationship Of Acculturation And All Cause Mortality Among Mexican Americans: Results From The Nhanes Iii Mortality Follow Up, Gloria C. Diaz

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

Background: Mexican Americans comprise the largest percentage of Hispanics in the United States, accounting for 9.5% of the population in 2006. Although more than 40% of Mexican Americans are foreign born, even individuals born in the U.S. face the process of acculturation, or the merging of Mexican and American cultures. Previous research has linked acculturation to both negative and positive health outcomes, with more acculturated Mexican Americans experiencing increased rates of substance use and abuse, asthma, and obesity, but decreased rates of physical inactivity and low self-esteem. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between acculturation and …

Community Learning Garden Programs In The Portland Area: How Do Learning Gardens Help Low‐Income Families Access Fresh Locally‐Grown Foods?, Denissia Elizabeth Withers Sep 2013

Community Learning Garden Programs In The Portland Area: How Do Learning Gardens Help Low‐Income Families Access Fresh Locally‐Grown Foods?, Denissia Elizabeth Withers

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

Community learning garden programs help families grow and prepare their own food. The skills and knowledge gained from these programs can help families access more fresh locally-grown foods. However, locally-grown foods are often perceived to be too expensive for low-income families. Economic barriers such as transportation and access to convenient food sources and the perceived high cost of fresh foods limit the amount of fresh foods available to low-income families and individuals. This study was designed to analyze how participation in community learning garden programs helps increase lowincome families access to organic and/or fresh locally-grown foods. Although the preliminary sample …

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

The Lents neighborhood is a designated urban renewal area that has historically lacked access to ample grocery stores offering fresh produce. The Lents International Farmer’s Market enhances health and community by providing a community space to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. Examining the Lents International Farmer’s Market is an invaluable opportunity to learn more about consumer shopping behavior and market expectations. This study also seeks to identify vendor opportunities and barriers when establishing themselves as retailers at Lents International Farmer’s Market. From both a business and consumer perspective, it is crucial for the market’s survival to gain a sense what …

Determining Who Responds Better To A Computer Vs. Human-Delivered Physical Activity Intervention: Results From The Community Health Advice By Telephone (Chat) Trial, Eric B. Hekler, Matthew P. Buman, Jennifer Otten, Cynthia M. Castro, Lauren Grieco, Bess Marcus, Robert H. Friedman, Melissa A. Napolitano, Abby C. King

Prevention and Community Health Faculty Publications

Background

Little research has explored who responds better to an automated vs. human advisor for health behaviors in general, and for physical activity (PA) promotion in particular. The purpose of this study was to explore baseline factors (i.e., demographics, motivation, interpersonal style, and external resources) that moderate intervention efficacy delivered by either a human or automated advisor.

Methods

Data were from the CHAT Trial, a 12-month randomized controlled trial to increase PA among underactive older adults (full trial N = 218) via a human advisor or automated interactive voice response advisor. Trial results indicated significant increases in PA in both …

Food Insecurity Among Children In Massachusetts, Stephanie Ettinger De Cuba, Deborah A. Frank, Maya Pilgrim, Maria Buitrago, Anna Voremberg, Harris Rollinger, Denise A. Hines

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article focuses on the prevalence among Massachusetts children and families of food insecurity, inadequate access to enough nutritious food for an active and healthy life. It summarizes research findings on the association of food insecurity with less optimal children’s health and development from the prenatal period through adolescence. Food insecurity also correlates with other material hardships, such as housing and energy insecurity. Data show families’ participation in public nutrition and other assistance program is associated with decreased prevalence of food insecurity and with mitigation of its impact on children’s health and well-being. The article concludes with recommendations for policy …

Children And Homelessness In Massachusetts, Donna Haig Friedman, Katherine Calano, Marija Bingulac, Christine Miller, Alisa Zeliger Sep 2013

Children And Homelessness In Massachusetts, Donna Haig Friedman, Katherine Calano, Marija Bingulac, Christine Miller, Alisa Zeliger

New England Journal of Public Policy

In Massachusetts, more than half a million children (15% of all children) live in poverty, 30% of all children live with parents who lack secure employment, and 41% live in households with high housing cost burdens. This article examines the root causes of poverty and its links to child homelessness in the state. Though the state has a long-standing progressive political legacy, the well-being of low-income families with children continues to decline. The article offers evidence about the extent of child homelessness and its profound effects on Massachusetts children and youth. The interconnectedness of what are usually thought of as …

Monitoring Compliance With The International Code Of Marketing Of Breast Milk Substitutes In The Sekyere West District Of Ghana, Julie Hurt, Dr. Kirk Dearden Sep 2013

Monitoring Compliance With The International Code Of Marketing Of Breast Milk Substitutes In The Sekyere West District Of Ghana, Julie Hurt, Dr. Kirk Dearden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A variety of elements influence infant feeding practice in Ghana. These include the public advertising of breast milk substitutes, cultural traditions, educational opportunities, accessibility of educational information, time available, and several perceived options of breastfeeding.1 The World Health Organization (WHO) adopted the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes in 1981 to ensure the proper use and marketing of breast milk substitutes. The Code also emphasizes the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for an infant’s first six months. Studies show that closer adherence to the Code correlates with smaller family size, increased maternal education, and higher breastfeeding promotion in health …

Poverty Alleviation Strategies On The Indigenous In Mexico, Claire Sharp, Dr. Tim B. Heaton Sep 2013

Poverty Alleviation Strategies On The Indigenous In Mexico, Claire Sharp, Dr. Tim B. Heaton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Mexico’s national poverty initiatives are intended to provide assistance for those living in poverty. It is a development targeting concern that people who could most benefit from such poverty alleviation development programs are excluded, such as the indigenous populations and other minority groups. I will be assessing how indigenous populations are included in development initiatives of Mexico and providing a detailed case study of how these national development initiatives affect the Raramuri Indians of Chihuahua, Mexico. Determining the efficacy of development programs entails assessing whether the development projects address the local-level concerns of various groups in society, including the indigenous …

Healthcare Narratives Across The Generations And Their Impact On Contemporary Healthcare Practices Of Young African American Women, Elizabeth Y. Love Sep 2013

Healthcare Narratives Across The Generations And Their Impact On Contemporary Healthcare Practices Of Young African American Women, Elizabeth Y. Love

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

African American women are more likely than those in any other ethnic group to die from heart disease, cancer, and stroke and are less likely to seek treatment. The literature suggests that healthcare patters are passed down through generations and that familial influences have a significant impact on healthcare behaviors, independent of other factors known to influence healthcare access such as poverty. The aim of this exploratory study was to pilot an innovative, multi-modal protocol designed to facilitate a discussion about personal healthcare narratives and the influence of previous generations on health-related attitudes. Methods: convenience sampling recruited seven young African …

Department of Chemistry Faculty Publications

Alteration of maternal lipid metabolism early in development has been shown to trigger obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases later in life in humans and animal models. Here, we set out to determine (i) lipid composition dynamics in single oocytes and preimplantation embryos by high mass resolution desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS), using the bovine species as biological model, (ii) the metabolically most relevant lipid compounds by multivariate data analysis and (iii) lipid upstream metabolism by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis of several target genes (ACAT1, CPT 1b, FASN, SREBP1 and SCAP). Bovine oocytes and blastocysts …

Disability, Health, And Multiple Chronic Conditions Among People Eligible For Both Medicare And Medicaid, 2005–2010., Michael H. Fox, Amanda Reichard

Institute on Disability

Abstract Introduction People who are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid (dual eligibles) and who have disabilities and multiple chronic conditions (MCC) present challenges for treatment, preventive services, and cost-effective access to care within the US health system. We sought to better understand dual eligibles and their association with MCC, accounting for sociodemographic factors inclusive of functional disability category. Methods Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) data for 2005 through 2010 were stratified by ages 18 to 64 and 65 or older to account for unique subsets of dual eligibles. Prevalence of MCC was calculated for those with physical disabilities, physical …
