Employment Challenges For Persons With Disabilities (Pwd) A Case Study Of Macedonia, Nehat Ramadani, Violeta Madzova Nov 2013

Employment Challenges For Persons With Disabilities (Pwd) A Case Study Of Macedonia, Nehat Ramadani, Violeta Madzova

UBT International Conference

This paper raises the issue of employability of Persons with Disabilities in Macedonia. Theoretically reviews the Medical and Social models of Persons with Disabilities (PWD), as well as analyses the international disability rights instruments – UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – and the European Union legislation – Directive on Equal Treatment in Employment and Occupation. The paper thoroughly describes the legislative and strategic framework of Macedonia attempting employment of PWD. It concludes that Macedonia is significantly lagging behind in reforming its social service sector, particularly its system for employment protection of PWD. Public support for employment …

Veracity Roadmap: Is Big Data Objective, Truthful And Credible?, Victoria Rubin, Tatiana Lukoianova Nov 2013

Veracity Roadmap: Is Big Data Objective, Truthful And Credible?, Victoria Rubin, Tatiana Lukoianova

FIMS Publications

This paper argues that big data can possess different characteristics, which affect its quality. Depending on its origin, data processing technologies, and methodologies used for data collection and scientific discoveries, big data can have biases, ambiguities, and inaccuracies which need to be identified and accounted for to reduce inference errors and improve the accuracy of generated insights. Big data veracity is now being recognized as a necessary property for its utilization, complementing the three previously established quality dimensions (volume, variety, and velocity), But there has been little discussion of the concept of veracity thus far. This paper provides a roadmap …

Building An Evaluation Framework Of Environmental Interpretation For Chinese Geoparks---Case Study Of Yuntaishan World Geopark, Dongying Wei Nov 2013

Building An Evaluation Framework Of Environmental Interpretation For Chinese Geoparks---Case Study Of Yuntaishan World Geopark, Dongying Wei

Dissertations

Environmental interpretation is a key tool for integrated management of tourism, with potential for greater use in managing visitor numbers, behavior and impacts, and enhancing experience. Evaluation is necessary to determine whether interpretation is achieving its goals. It is vital for park managers to know if their management is effective in order to determine what techniques can be used to address a particular problem. The study first introduces the background of Geoparks, and clarifies the definition of environmental interpretation. Next, the study identifies the context that a comprehensive evaluation framework for environmental interpretation in Geoparks is used in order to …

The Impact Of Socialist Realism Ideology In The Albanian Architecture From 1945-1990, Olisa Ndreçka, Florian Nepravishta Nov 2013

The Impact Of Socialist Realism Ideology In The Albanian Architecture From 1945-1990, Olisa Ndreçka, Florian Nepravishta

UBT International Conference

The socialist Style in the Eastern European countries was considered a great style. It was called the “proletariat style” that combined the communist ideology with the artistic image, a style that was socialist in content and national in form. Construction and Architecture in Albania after the Second World War until 1990, exactly for 45 years, were guided by certain principles, as aesthetic design concepts, as well as the norms and rules that were binding and strong for architects. “Canons” funnel architects relations with the government and the Party. The paper treats: historical description of socialist realism, the initial development of …

Symbolism And Poetics Of Autogenic Space And Structures – The New Design Approach On Mosque As Representative Building (Design Proposal For The Central Mosque Of Prishtina As Case Study), Banush Shyqeriu, Kushtrim Hajdari Nov 2013

Symbolism And Poetics Of Autogenic Space And Structures – The New Design Approach On Mosque As Representative Building (Design Proposal For The Central Mosque Of Prishtina As Case Study), Banush Shyqeriu, Kushtrim Hajdari

UBT International Conference

The congregation Mosque, Masjid (from Arabic, sujúd = prostration to God) is one of the most important institutions of Muslim world, also the predominant built form of Muslim architecture. Having a basic spatial configuration to create “shelter” for prayer, it is evoking how the simple space bears meaning that generates symbolism. This paper tries to de-construct and re-construct the Mosque as a representative built form. By using our Design Proposal for the Central Mosque of Prishtina as Case Study, we emphasize an “organic” approach towards Mosque design through a methodology of integral contextualization and conception as the new “typology”, by …

SURGE

Snapping pictures of his fellow Gettysburgians around campus as the visual communications intern, and fearlessly working with other students to create, organize, and lead the new Asian Student Alliance (ASA) group on campus, Eric Lee ’15 finds himself at the crossroads of art and activism.

New to campus this year after two years in the making, the ASA is a student-led, -run, and -organized group focused on celebrating different Asian cultures and heritages, closing the gap between international and domestic students, and creating a social, cultural, and political forum for students to dialogue, specifically about issues facing Asian communities. One-Day Treatment Of Small Molecule 8-Bromo-Cyclic Amp Analogue Induces Cell-Based Vegf Production For In Vitro Angiogenesis And Osteoblastic Differentiation, Kevin W.-H. Lo, Ho Man Kan, Keith A. Gagnon, Cato T. Laurencin Nov 2013

Laurencin

UCHC Articles - Research

Small molecule based regenerative engineering is emerging as a promising strategy for regenerating bone tissue. Small molecule cAMP analogues have been proposed as novel biofactors for bone repair and regeneration, and while promising, the effect that these small molecules have on angiogenesis, a critical requirement for successful bone regeneration, is still unclear. Our previous research demonstrated that the small molecule cAMP analogue 8-bromoadenosine-3’,5’-cyclic monophosphate (8-Br-cAMP) was able to promote initial osteoblast adhesion on a polymeric scaffold via cAMP signaling cascades. Here, we report that 8-Br-cAMP is capable of inducing in vitro cell-based VEGF production for angiogenesis promotion. We first demonstrated …

Caring For An Infant With Trisomy 18: A Case Study And Guidelines, Deborah Bruns Nov 2013

Caring For An Infant With Trisomy 18: A Case Study And Guidelines, Deborah Bruns

Publications

Much of the literature describes the prognosis for infants with full trisomy 18 as bleak. The case study offered here provides an overview of an infant with this diagnosis who lived for 88.5 days in a Level III neonatal intensive care unit. Care decisions (medical and basic care) and their outcomes are described along with implications for care for infants with a diagnosis often characterized as incompatible with life. The need for information about treatment options and collaboration among an infant’s medical team is emphasized.

The Power Of Politics For Zambia’S Public Sector Unions: A Case Study Of The 2013 Nursing Strikes, Andrew Stawasz, Thaddeus Talbot Nov 2013

The Power Of Politics For Zambia’S Public Sector Unions: A Case Study Of The 2013 Nursing Strikes, Andrew Stawasz, Thaddeus Talbot

Zambia Social Science Journal

Recent pay reform efforts in Zambia have sought to generate more competitive wages and benefits for workers in the public sector. However, these efforts have been characterised by inconsistent policy decisions during wage negotiations. Such decisions produce distortions in the pay structure that result in industrial unrest from unions in the public sector. Previous literature has not examined how public sector unions influence these outcomes in Zambia. This article examines factors that affect public sector unions’ influence in Zambia. Seven factors were identified after analysing the 2013 wage negotiations and subsequent nurses’ strikes at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) as …

Playing Cards For Information Literacy: An Active Learning Experiment, Melissa Clark Nov 2013

Playing Cards For Information Literacy: An Active Learning Experiment, Melissa Clark

Library Conference Presentations and Posters

Engaging students during one-shot library instruction sessions requires both creativity and effort. Even when the session is designed for a particular assignment, students’ information needs may not be immediate enough to inspire active participation in class activities. Multiple studies have demonstrated that active learning increases students’ understanding and retention of information, and there is a great deal of literature on the implementation and effectiveness of specific techniques. Much of the recent literature, especially related to library instruction, has focused on technology (e.g. audience response systems, social media, interactive whiteboards, and multimedia presentations) as the primary vehicle for active learning initiatives. …

Energy And Environmental Issues And Policy In China, Zhongxiang Zhang Nov 2013

Energy And Environmental Issues And Policy In China, Zhongxiang Zhang

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

China’s rampant environmental pollution problems and rising greenhouse gas emissions and the resulting climate change are undermining its long-term economic growth. China, from its own perspective cannot afford to and, from an international perspective, is not meant to continue on the conventional path of encouraging economic growth at the expense of the environment. Instead, concerns about a range of environmental stresses from burning fossil fuels, energy security as a result of steeply rising oil imports and international pressure on it to exhibit greater ambition in fighting global climate change have sparked China’s determination to improve energy efficiency and cut pollutants, …

Faculty Scholarship

The cost of whole genome sequencing is dropping rapidly. There has been a great deal of enthusiasm about the potential for this technological advance to transform clinical care. Given the interest and significant investment in genomics, this seems an ideal time to consider what the evidence tells us about potential benefits and harms, particularly in the context of health care policy. The scale and pace of adoption of this powerful new technology should be driven by clinical need, clinical evidence, and a commitment to put patients at the centre of health care policy.

Redefining Professionalism? Florida's Code Mandating The Aspirational Raises Challenging Questions, Keith W. Rizzardi Nov 2013

Redefining Professionalism? Florida's Code Mandating The Aspirational Raises Challenging Questions, Keith W. Rizzardi

Professionalism Research Library

Responding to continued criticism of the legal profession, Florida recently adopted a new Code for Resolving Professionalism Complaints (professionalism code). The new requirements transform the aspiration of professionalism into a mandate, but important questions remain as to the meaning of key terms and the methods of implementation. In its opinion approving the professionalism code, the Florida Supreme Court stated that Florida lawyers had “traditionally followed a more passive, academic approach to enhance and improve professionalism.” In other words, the combination of continuing legal education programs, speeches, contests, and meetings — methods once called “procedural professionalism” in a 2005 Florida Bar …
