Department of Management Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

How do different corporate governance structures fare under conditions of fundamental environmental transformations? Treating governance structure as a knowledge distribution mechanism embedded in institutional frameworks, the paper aims to propose that the efficiency of this knowledge diffusing process will increase organizational survival under a punctuational change. Using the case of Chinese banking industry during 1897-1927, a period of rapid technological, economic, and regulatory shifts. Money shops (qianzhuang) with decentralized, open and extended governance structure were better able to adapt to rapid changes in the environment and had a higher survival chance than ticket stores (piaohao) with centralized, closed and internalized …

Libraries In The Time Of Moocs, Curtis L. Kendrick, Irene Gashurov

Library Scholarship

MOOCs give librarians new opportunities to help shape the conversation about changes in higher education and to guide administrators, faculty, and students through these changes. To assume this role, librarians must understand the MOOCs landscape. Numerous stakeholders will have an interest in the massive intellectual property that ultimately resides in libraries' owned and licensed digital repositories. Studying and adopting technologies to manage and monitor MOOC usage of library resources will be essential to controlling access and tightening Internet safeguards.

Migration Of An E-Learning Model To The Cloud N. Ganesan ©, Nanda Ganesan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

An e-learning model consisting of a course website and multimedia learning modules was developed and implemented initially on a traditional computing platform at a higher learning institution. With the emerging concept of cloud computing, the possibility of using cloud computing resources such as Google Apps, YouTube and SkyDrive to redesign and deploy the e-learning model in the cloud was explored. It was found that the cloud computing resources offered unprecedented opportunity and flexibility to migrate the course website to the cloud and to expand the outreach of the multimedia modules. Agile Method Tailoring In A Cmmi Level 5 Organization, Julian M. Bass, Ian K. Allison, Udayan Banerjee

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

We investigate the use and tailoring of agile methods in a highly disciplined CMMI Level 5 organization. We explore gaps between traditional agile practices and those required for enhanced levels of governance required by CMMI appraisal. We conducted a case study with recorded interviews from practitioners at NIIT Technology Ltd. The interviews were iteratively analysed and coded. Our findings show that agile methods must be supplemented with pre-sprint planning, evidence recording, project metrics, team self-organization, process standardization, and process base-lining to support the CMMI appraisal. There are challenges around Agile compliance with CMMI Level 4 processes and misconceptions about agile …

A New Asset Type: Digital Assets, Alp Toygar, C.E. Taipe Rohm Jr., Jake Zhu

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Is there a need for a new “asset” type? What are “digital materials?” Can digital materials be designated as “Digital Assets?” What is the driven source of the “Digital Asset?” Is the “Digital Asset” concept mature enough to be defined as a new asset type? For example, under what name or ownership should we regard all social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.), online photo albums(Flickr, Picasa etc.), blogs, domain names, websites, email accounts, smart phones or any information stored in the cloud or computers? In reality, digital images, photos, documents, audio and video files should be considered “assets” because …

Evaluating Online Forums As A Customer Service Tool For Consumer Products, Kaveepan Lertwachara, Gregg Erickson

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

In this study, we capture communication activities on 14 online forums that are implemented primarily to provide customer service for consumers of mobile phones and MP3 players. We perform a large scale analysis to investigate the social nature and the effectiveness of using online forums as a customer service tool. Unlike previous studies, our research examines a complete archive of the actual communication activities on online forums that are publicly available to general consumers. Our comparative and social network analysis allows us to compare the structural differences among these social networks.

2010 British General Election Leader Evaluations: Replicating Electoral Focus Group Research, Kristi Winters, Edzia Carvalho

The Qualitative Report

This research replicates and expands upon the qualitative electoral research of Winters and Campbell by using data from focus groups conducted in Essex, England to coincide with three leadership debates during the 2010 British general election. The Qualitative Election Study of Britain (QES Britain) broadly replicated Winters and Campbell’s research design but includes innovations in data collection to more accurately capture assessments. This innovation means the data coding are based entirely on the evaluations of the participants. In our analysis we innovate in the way we display each leader’s unique evaluation structure. To capture the salience and direction of leadership …

Exploring Education Students’ Reflexivity Through The Arts And Sharing My “Bricolage” Dilemmas, Janet C. Richards

The Qualitative Report

As part of course requirements, 16 education students in a master’s cohort tutored groups of elementary children (the same groups throughout the semester) in an after - school writing program that emphasized an ethos of care. The education students had never taught children and consequently had difficulties reflecting about their lessons through weekly e - mail communication. As the course instructor I had a hunch innovative artistic processes might unleash and heighten the education students’ abilities as reflective practitioners . Therefore, I asked them to explore their pedagogy through the arts. Concurrently, I engaged in arts - based educational research …
