College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: High risk, unfavorable classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) includes those patients with primary refractory or early relapse, and progressive disease. To improve the availability of biomarkers for this group of patients, we investigated both tumor biopsies and peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) of untreated (chemo-naïve, CN) Nodular Sclerosis Classic Hodgkin Lymphoma (NS-cHL) patients for consistent biomarkers that can predict the outcome prior to frontline treatment.

METHODS AND MATERIALS: Bioinformatics data mining was used to generate 151 candidate biomarkers, which were screened against a library of 10 HL cell lines. Expression of FGF2 and SDC1 by CD30+ cells from HL patient samples …

Raqs Sharqi In Cultural Diplomacy; An Important But Neglected Diplomatic Tool In U.S.-Egypt Diplomatic Relations €Œsoft Power Is A Dance That Requires Partners., Torkom Movsesiyan

Dissertations and Theses

"Following the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, America’s image abroad plunged, especially in the Arab world, where anti-Americanism has been on the rise. America’s hard power alone can no longer efficiently boost America’s reputation and the U.S. government has abandoned its soft power resources. Although important, the linchpin of public diplomacy, known as cultural diplomacy, I argue has become a neglected diplomatic tool in U.S.-Middle East relations. Accordingly, this thesis will explore the role of dance in cultural diplomacy as a catalyst of releasing tension and bringing peace among nation-states, especially in U.S.-Egypt relations. After the calamities of the …

Natural user interface is a fairly new concept in the field of human-computer interaction. It is the idea of using every day natural human behaviors and actions to control a device. An example of a natural user interface is touch control technology in smartphones, tablets, and new laptops. The interaction is more direct when compared to artificial input devices like a keyboard and mouse. Though natural user interface devices might not perform as well as standard input devices for certain applications, for other applications they are now the de facto standard. A new user interface that is poised to be …

The Use Of Win, Self-Creative Interaction Ppt, And Online Tests To Assist In The Instruction Of English For Taiwanese Freshmen, Hui-Kuei Hsieh, Hui-Uen Chia, Erickson Lin

PASAA

Nowadays, because of the expansion of high-speed networking, people highly depend upon computers and the Internet to receive information and acquire knowledge. Education is gradually transforming from teacher-centric to student-centric. Instructors have become facilitators, tutors, coaches, guides and motivators. As a result, instruction has become non-linear and self-directed. Traditional classroom lectures are being gradually replaced by interactive teaching approaches. To reflect this trend, new forms of instruction must also take learners' needs into consideration. Consequently, interactive multimedia (IM) integrated instruction has become a must in Taiwanese higher education. Today, IM and courseware are required educational media in almost every Taiwanese …

Transforming Narratives, Lucia Weilein Jan 2013

Transforming Narratives, Lucia Weilein

Theses and Dissertations

Narrative, often considered synonymous with “story,” can be viewed from a structuralist perspective and analyzed independent of any particular content. Breaking narrative into categories of story and discourse, this autonomous structure makes possible a translation of content from one form to another. The various media and form types common in graphic design can serve as both recipient and translator of narratives, converting content into a framework that includes the concept of craftsmanship, aesthetic components and specifications, legibility and composition, and the physical form of the designed object. To examine how this framework functions in practice, I have developed a series …

Wanderings, Jetter Jorge Silva Jan 2013

Wanderings, Jetter Jorge Silva

Theses and Dissertations

While it implies aimless movement, the act of wandering is an act of discovery and can become a search for the unexpected. Wandering, as a metaphor for making, creates opportunities to work in ways where the final outcome is unknown. This can be accomplished by the creation of methods and instructions designed for wandering-the act of discovery. In the field of design, these ideas can be incorporated as methods for making that guide the design process in ultimately unknowable ways, resulting in products that bear little trace of preconception. The role of chance and indeterminacy as methods for relinquishing control …

Actual Malice In The Inter-American Court Of Human Rights, Edward L. Carter Jan 2013

Actual Malice In The Inter-American Court Of Human Rights, Edward L. Carter

Faculty Publications

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights decided four cases in recent years that represent a positive step for freedom of expression in nations that belong to the Organization of American States. In 2004 and again in 2008, the court stopped short of adopting a standard that would require proof of actual malice in criminal defamation cases brought by public officials. In 2009, however, the court seemed to adopt the actual malice rule without calling it that. The court’s progress toward actual malice is chronicled in this article. The article concludes that the court’s decision not to explicitly use …

Cannabinoid Modulation Of Hiv-1 Tat-Stimulated Adhesion Of Macrophage-Like Cells To The Extracellular Matrix, Johnathan Drevik Jan 2013

Cannabinoid Modulation Of Hiv-1 Tat-Stimulated Adhesion Of Macrophage-Like Cells To The Extracellular Matrix, Johnathan Drevik

Theses and Dissertations

HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HANDs) are becoming one of the largest problems in patients infected with HIV-1. The ability of infected cells such as monocytes and microglial cells to act as viral reservoirs causes extreme inflammation in the CNS and has led to several different types of neurocognitive problems. Specifically these HIV-1 infected monocytes are able to secrete inflammatory factors such as the regulatory protein Tat which acts as a chemoattractant for monocytes while also promoting the adhesion of leukocytes to the extracellular matrix (ECM). We have shown that one of the major features of the Tat protein is that it …

Assessment Of The Feasibility Of Co-Administration Of Phenolic Dietary Compounds With Phenylephrine To Increase Its Bioavailability, Zhenxian Zhang Jan 2013

Assessment Of The Feasibility Of Co-Administration Of Phenolic Dietary Compounds With Phenylephrine To Increase Its Bioavailability, Zhenxian Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

R-(-)-Phenylephrine (PE) is the most commonly used nonprescription oral nasal decongestant in the United States. It is a selective α1-adrenergic receptor agonist and has many years of safe usage. However, the efficacy of PE is controversial, due to its extensive pre-systemic metabolism, which leads to low and variable oral bioavailability (38 ± 9%, mean ± SD). Sulfation plays a very important role in pre-systemic metabolism of PE. The sulfation of PE occurs at its phenolic group, which is the preferred structural feature of many sulfotransferase (SULT) substrates. Compounds with phenolic groups have similar structures to PE, which may share the …

Graphene-Supported Metal Nanoparticles For Applications In Heterogeneous Catalysis, Hany Elazab Jan 2013

Graphene-Supported Metal Nanoparticles For Applications In Heterogeneous Catalysis, Hany Elazab

Theses and Dissertations

Due to its unique properties and high surface area, Graphene has become a good candidate as an effective solid support for metal catalysts. The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2010 was awarded to Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov "for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene". Microwave-assisted synthesis of various metallic nanostructured materials was investigated for CO oxidation applications. These metallic nanostructured materials were used to convert CO to CO2 as an effective approach for carbon monoxide elimination due to its harmful effect on health and environment. In particular, this dissertation is focusing on palladium as a transition metal that …

Oil Rush Urbanism: Planning For When The Landscape Is Quiet Again, Jena Stanton. Nolte

Landscape Architecture Theses

Williston, ND and surrounding counties are experiencing a tremendous influx of people from all over the United States. Throughout the Williston basin the consequences of over production of infrastructure and housing associated with past boom periods have slowed the response to the current development and growth. As a result of this lag in response, some communities in western North Dakota, including Williston, ND find themselves in a reactionary position where they are now desperately trying to catch up as the demand of the current oil boom has far overtaken supply of infrastructure, housing and community services. Resource-extraction growth has the …

Lawyering Outside The Box: Confronting The Creativity Crisis, Samantha A. Moppett Jan 2013

Lawyering Outside The Box: Confronting The Creativity Crisis, Samantha A. Moppett

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The Great Recession was not only a defining moment in world history and for the United States economy; it was also a turning point for the legal profession. The economic downturn resulted in a long-term structural adjustment in the legal services market that will adversely impact the legal profession permanently. Accordingly, lawyers need to be creative in adapting to the changing realities of law practice.

Yet, despite the need for creative approaches to address the changing legal landscape, a disturbing phenomenon was recently identified; creativity in the United States is declining. Moreover, legal education and the legal practice impose barriers …

The Pine Ridge Project: Revitalizing The Forgotten, Quinn Sackreiter-Heesch Jan 2013

The Pine Ridge Project: Revitalizing The Forgotten, Quinn Sackreiter-Heesch

Landscape Architecture Theses

This project ventures to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in western South Dakota. The reservation is home to a rich culture of Lakota Sioux Native Americans that, unfortunately, are living in one of the most impoverished areas of the country. Many are without proper housing and livelihood necessities and many struggle with illness and addiction. The areas that these people inhabit lack any sense of a community; there are no pathways or parks, no meeting areas or sports fields. There is no reason for them to feel like living in a thriving community whilst living in such a disadvantaged state. …

Learning To Play In Nature; An Urban Playground For Adolescents, Priscilla Gurath Jan 2013

Learning To Play In Nature; An Urban Playground For Adolescents, Priscilla Gurath

Landscape Architecture Theses

This project examines the problems surrounding the increase in adverse health related issues directly relating to the decrease in society’s physical activity and exercise opportunities for adolescents in their immediate communities. The typology of this project is an educational recreation space aimed at adolescents and addresses the following questions: What characteristics of urban space can make a healthy community and how are landscape patterns making it healthy and safe for adolescents as a vulnerable group? Through research and mixed-methods of data collection and analysis, this study investigates how the built environment can have a positive effect on children’s health and …

Evil Black Guns: Hate, Instrumentality, And The Neutrality Of Firearms, Christopher B. Strain Jan 2013

Evil Black Guns: Hate, Instrumentality, And The Neutrality Of Firearms, Christopher B. Strain

Journal of Hate Studies

In the wake of mass shootings in Aurora, Colorado, where 12 moviegoers were killed and 70 injured; Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and 6 adult staff members were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School; and elsewhere, concerned citizens may question whether guns are neutral actors in the rage killings and rampage murders that have become increasingly familiar in U.S. society. Rather than revisit the well-worn aphorism “guns don’t kill people: people do,” this article considers a provocative counter thesis—that firearms may serve not only as mechanisms of violence in shooting rampages but also as catalysts. Can guns themselves cause violence, …

Reclaiming Justice And Eliminating Inequality Through Compassionate Migration: The Relentless Struggle Of Migrants Living In The Shadows, William F. Arrocha Jan 2013

Reclaiming Justice And Eliminating Inequality Through Compassionate Migration: The Relentless Struggle Of Migrants Living In The Shadows, William F. Arrocha

Journal of Hate Studies

This article elaborates on the emerging concept of “compassionate migration” as a counter-hegemonic response to the institutions and systems that criminalize unauthorized immigration, including the assistance provided by those who aid such migrants out of a sense of compassion. In the name of human dignity, it is imperative that those who live in the shadows of United States immigration law and its enforcement system sense that social justice is a tangible possibility, and that they indeed may be able to free themselves from the structures that criminalize them and render them vulnerable to various forms of discrimination and other human …

Islamophobia, Hateful Speech, And The Need To Practice Democratic Virtues, Shannon Dunn Jan 2013

Islamophobia, Hateful Speech, And The Need To Practice Democratic Virtues, Shannon Dunn

Journal of Hate Studies

This essay examines the relationship between hateful speech and its potential and realized harmful effects socially and politically vulnerable groups, particularly Muslims, in a democratic society. I critically evaluate the assumption that free speech is an absolute value of secularism and the corresponding definition of Muslims as religious “others” in European and American democratic culture. Instead of arguing strictly for the legal regulation of hateful speech, however, I contend that the cultivation of civic virtues—specifically charity and solidarity—may counteract the harmful effects of such speech, and can lend moral justification for the right of free speech.

War Crimes, Wristbands, And Web 2.0: Exploring Online Justice Advocacy, Colonialism And ‘Civilizing Missions’ Through Kony2012, Sarah Steele, Tyler Shores, Yvette Pollastrini Jan 2013

War Crimes, Wristbands, And Web 2.0: Exploring Online Justice Advocacy, Colonialism And ‘Civilizing Missions’ Through Kony2012, Sarah Steele, Tyler Shores, Yvette Pollastrini

Journal of Hate Studies

On March 5, 2012, the advocacy organization Invisible Children released a short 30-minute film entitled Kony2012, on YouTube.com. Within days, the video had gone viral, gaining a mass global viewership. By December 2012, the video had received over 94 million views worldwide, attaining the unofficial status as “the most viral video of all time.” While Kony2012 raised awareness about the urgency of the manhunt for Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) leader Joseph Kony and his exploitation of child soldiers in Uganda, the film generated much controversy. Commentators, both from within Uganda and beyond, raised serious questions about the oversimplified Colonial-style intervention …

Filipino Amerasians: Gauging Stigmatization, Intolerance And Hatemongering In A Pluralistic Asia Pacific Society, Peter C. Kutschera, Marie A. Caputi Jan 2013

Filipino Amerasians: Gauging Stigmatization, Intolerance And Hatemongering In A Pluralistic Asia Pacific Society, Peter C. Kutschera, Marie A. Caputi

Journal of Hate Studies

Empirical and evidence-based researchers have neglected stigmatization, bias, name-calling, intolerance and even hatemongering experienced by military Filipino Amerasians and other biracial Pan Amerasian progeny who were abandoned abroad by their U.S. servicemen fathers. This condi- tion persists in the Philippines and has been reliably documented in other East and Southeast Asian nation-states, such as Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam. A relatively recent multiple-case study investigating psychosocial risk and mental health among Amerasians in Angeles, Pampanga, site of the former Clark Air Base, substantiated long-reported anecdotal claims that Anglo (White) and particularly African (Black) Amerasians were targets of victimization and traumatized …

Applying A Mixed Methods Approach To Understanding And Evaluating The Effects Of Family Treatment Among Sexually Abusive Youth, Jamie R. Yoder Jan 2013

Applying A Mixed Methods Approach To Understanding And Evaluating The Effects Of Family Treatment Among Sexually Abusive Youth, Jamie R. Yoder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Families are frequently identified as a risk for supporting and perpetuating sexually abusive behavior among youth. Traditionally, the field has focused on deficits of families rather than considering them as a resource to promote change. Although emerging literature strongly argues the need to target families in the healing process, treatment initiatives rarely follow suite, and research has failed to comprehensively document the effectiveness of family-inclusive treatment. Knowing there are several gaps in literature, the current study was conducted to investigate the process of engagement in treatment, understand the nuances of family treatment, and to uncover positive outcomes associated with family …
