Advances In Fluid And Thermal Transport Property Analysis And Design Of Sintered Porous Wick Microstructures, K. K. Bodla, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Sintered porous structures are ubiquitous as heat transport media for thermal management and other applications. In particular, low-porosity sintered packed beds are used as capillary-wicking and evaporation-enhancement structures in heat pipes. Accurate prediction and analysis of their transport characteristics for different microstructure geometries is important for improved design. Owing to the random nature and geometric complexity of these materials, development of predictive methods has been the subject of extensive prior research. The present work summarizes and builds upon past studies and recent advances in pore-scale modeling of fluid and thermal transport within such heterogeneous media. A brief review of various …

Roles Of Jnrap2.6-Like From The Transition Zone Of Black Walnut In Hormone Signaling, Zhonglian Huang, Peng Zhao, Jose Medina, Richard Meilan, Keith E. Woeste

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

An EST sequence, designated JnRAP2-like, was isolated from tissue at the heartwood/sapwood transition zone (TZ) in black walnut (Juglans nigra L). The deduced amino acid sequence of JnRAP2-like protein consists of a single AP2-containing domain with significant similarity to conserved AP2/ERF DNA-binding domains in other species. Based on multiple sequence alignment, JnRAP2-like appears to be an ortholog of RAP2.6L (At5g13330), which encodes an ethylene response element binding protein in Arabidopsis thaliana. Real-time PCR revealed that the JnRAP2-like was expressed most abundantly in TZ of trees harvested in fall when compared with other xylem tissues harvested in the …

Because of the resource demanding nature of video streaming applications, maximizing resource utilization in any video streaming system is a key factor to increase the scalability and decrease the cost of the system. Resources to utilize include server bandwidth, network bandwidth, battery life in battery operated devices, and processing time in limited processing power devices. In this work, we propose new techniques to maximize the utilization of video-on-demand (VOD) server resources. In addition to that, we propose new framework to maximize the utilization of …

An Empirical Examination And Metaevaluation Of The Impact Evaluation Process, Anne Maechling Blake Jan 2013

An Empirical Examination And Metaevaluation Of The Impact Evaluation Process, Anne Maechling Blake

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation empirically examines the Guerra-Lopez (2007a) Impact Evaluation Process (IEP), which is a prescriptive program evaluation model. Since there is no generally accepted process for arriving at final judgments about the usefulness, appropriateness, effectiveness, reliability, and validity of evaluation models, this study used a combination of approaches to begin to build a body of evidence about the effectiveness of the IEP. Primarily, the study used Stufflebeam's (2011) recently revised Program Evaluations Metaevaluation Checklist to examine the model. The Checklist is based on the Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation's (2010) Program Evaluation Standards. Fitzpatrick, Sanders, & Worthen (2011) …

Using Academic Advising To Increase Motivation And Engagement In First-Year College Students, Lisa Remsing

Wayne State University Dissertations

According to ACT Educational Services (2010), more than one-third of college freshmen will not progress to their sophomore year. Several states, including Michigan, have proposed higher education performance funding models, which directly correlate state funds to student retention and graduation rates (Jesse, 2012). As higher education suffers from diminishing resources, there is a heightened focus to increase retention and graduation rates (Tinto, 2007).

The transition from high school to college can be a traumatic time for adolescents. This age group has unique motivational needs as they adjust to an unfamiliar academic environment (Perry et al., 2005). The first year of …

Without Content: Rhetoric, American Anarchism, And The End(S) Of Radical Politics, Michael John Ristich Jan 2013

Without Content: Rhetoric, American Anarchism, And The End(S) Of Radical Politics, Michael John Ristich

Wayne State University Dissertations

My study suggests there is a homology between the Platonic critique of rhetoric and the critique of anarchism made by both Marxism and liberalism. I investigate this problematic by taking up a genealogical examination of anarchism in America that begins with America's founding and concludes with a discussion of the resurgence of populist/anti-Statist rhetoric(s) in the early twenty-first century. In doing so, I argue that anarchism is a politics "without content;" it is a rhetorical politics that challenges the (re)turns to metaphysics and Marxism in the wake of poststructuralist and postmodern thought. Specifically, in light of the contemporary Tea Party …

Acidic Pericellular Ph: Effects On Proteolysis And Gene Expression As Determined In 3d Models Of Breast Carcinoma, Jennifer M. Rothberg

Wayne State University Dissertations

Among the non-cellular microenvironmental factors that contribute to malignancy of solid tumors is an acidic peritumoral pH. The first objective was to determine if an acidic extracellular pH observed in vivo (i.e., pHe 6.8) affects the activity of proteases, such as cathepsin B, that contribute to degradation of collagen IV by tumor cells when grown in biologically relevant three-dimensional cultures. At pHe 6.8 there were increases in pericellular active cysteine cathepsins and in degradation of DQ-collagen IV, which was partially blocked by a cathepsin B inhibitor. Imaging probes for active cysteine cathepsins localized to tumors in vivo. The amount of …

Elucidation Of The Functional Role Of Pcbp-The Cytosolic Iron Chaperone Protein Family, In Cellular Iron Homeostasis, Poorna Subramanian

Wayne State University Dissertations

Biological Role of Ferritin - Iron is essential for life and often utilized as a cofactor in many proteins. In humans, iron accumulation causes cirrhosis, arthritis, cardiomyopathy and diabetes mellitus, and it is associated with increased risk of cancer and heart disease. In contrast, decreased brain iron content results in permanent neurocognitive and motor impairment. Intracellular iron content must be maintained within a narrow range to avoid the adverse effects of iron depletion or excess, and this function is performed by the protein ferritin. Ferritins are iron storage proteins that are ubiquitously expressed in animals, plants and bacteria. They serve …

Electronic Performance Support Systems: Comparison Of Types Of Integration Levels On Performance Outcomes, Sharon A. Phillips

Wayne State University Dissertations

Selecting appropriate performance improvement interventions is a critical component of a comprehensive model of performance improvement. Intervention selection is an interconnected process involving analysis of an organization's environment, definition of the performance problem, and identification of a performance gap and identification of causal factors. When the performance gap relates to a lack of knowledge or information on the job, instructional approaches such as training have been traditionally used; however, non-instructional interventions such as electronic performance support systems (EPSS) have gained increasing attention as alternatives to training interventions.

Electronic Performance Support Systems (EPSS) use computing technology to support task performance on …

Examining The Use Of Spirituality As A Form Of Social Support In Computer-Mediated Communication, Kristopher Micheal Paal Jan 2013

Examining The Use Of Spirituality As A Form Of Social Support In Computer-Mediated Communication, Kristopher Micheal Paal

Wayne State University Dissertations

Social Information Processing Theory (Walther, 1992) suggests that individuals can develop and sustain relationships in online contexts even with limited cues present. With more individuals using computer-mediated communication (CMC) for relational processes, there is an increased need for examination of how communication is used with fewer cues present. Due to its contributions to holistic health, spirituality is a dimension of support which also necessitates increased examination as well. The present study examines how CMC can be used for the relational purposes of spiritual and social support in online communities. Messages from two separate online bereavement communities were analyzed to discover …

Mitochondrial Dna Instability In Cells Lacking Aconitase Correlates With Iron Citrate Toxicity, Muhammad A. Farooq, Tammy M. Pracheil, Zhejun Dong, Fei Xiao, Zhengchang Liu

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Aconitase, the second enzyme of the tricarboxylic acid cycle encoded by ACO1 in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, catalyzes the conversion of citrate to isocitrate. aco1 Delta results in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) instability. It has been proposed that Aco1 binds to mtDNA and mediates its maintenance. Here we propose an alternative mechanism to account for mtDNA loss in aco1 Delta mutant cells. We found that aco1 Delta activated the RTG pathway, resulting in increased expression of genes encoding citrate synthase. By deleting RTG1, RTG3, or genes encoding citrate synthase, mtDNA instability was prevented in aco1 Delta mutant …
