Borrowing The Essentials: A Diachronic Study Of The Semantic Primes Of Modern English, Karen Esther Swan Oct 2013

Borrowing The Essentials: A Diachronic Study Of The Semantic Primes Of Modern English, Karen Esther Swan

Theses and Dissertations

In order for communication to take place, there must be a set of core concepts that are universal to all speakers. Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) has proposed an inventory of these concepts, called semantic primes, and uses them as universal concepts in the explication and exploration of cultural values. The English semantic primes, while the majority are Anglo-Saxon, contain words that have been borrowed from Latin, Old Norse, and French. Borrowing lexical items into core vocabulary has many implications. First, the primes are not entirely stable or immune to foreign influence, even the Anglo-Saxon primes have been susceptible to the …

Rural Communities And School Consolidation--Introduction To Special Issue, Richard Edwards, Peter Longo

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This special issue of Great Plains Research focuses on rural communities and school consolidation. It publishes some of the contributions, both essays and research articles, first presented at the Center for Great Plains Studies' 39th Annual Symposium at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on April 5-6, 2013. It also includes some images from a special Chuck Guildner photographic exhibition staged at the Museum of Nebraska Art. The symposium broadly addressed the connection between rural schools and rural communities, including a particular focus on the gains and losses from school consolidation. Good schools are essential to the good life. Americans …

Considering Native American Students In Rural School Consolidation, Andrea Miller Oct 2013

Considering Native American Students In Rural School Consolidation, Andrea Miller

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

When discussing school consolidation it is important to consider the educational effects on Native American students. Many Native American students live in homes of poverty, deal with difficult home lives, and struggle academically. While there are many areas of concern in discussing consolidation, loss of a low student-teacher ratio, loss of connection with the school community, and loss of autonomy or control of schools are of particular importance. Consolidation efforts may bring some positive education opportunity for Native students which may include offering a diversified and expanded curriculum, specialization for staffing, and specialized resources for students. Discussing the potential effects …

Different Types Of Backward Bifurcations Due To Density-Dependent Treatments, Baojun Song, Wen Du, Jie Lou Oct 2013

Different Types Of Backward Bifurcations Due To Density-Dependent Treatments, Baojun Song, Wen Du, Jie Lou

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A set of deterministic SIS models with density-dependent treatments are studied to understand the disease dynamics when different treatment strategies are applied. Qualitative analyses are carried out in terms of general treatment functions. It has become customary that a backward bifurcation leads to bistable dynamics. However, this study finds that finds that bistability may not be an option at all; the disease-free equilibrium could be globally stable when there is a backward bifurcation. Furthermore, when a backward bifurcation occurs, the fashion of bistability could be the coexistence of either dual stable equilibria or the disease-free equilibrium and a stable limit …

Quality Of Service Control In Wireless Local Area Networks, Adelina Hasanmetaj Oct 2013

Quality Of Service Control In Wireless Local Area Networks, Adelina Hasanmetaj

Theses and Dissertations

Today wireless internet access, especially the IEEE 802.11 family WLANs, has become widely available. Public hotspots emerge everywhere, from hotels to airports. In addition, private usage also grows rapidly due to the offered convenience.

The current WLAN standard 802.11b does not offer service differentiation. Therefore the quality of an offered service is often not guaranteed. However, a new standard 802.11e has been proposed to improve the quality of service provisioning. This new standard introduces different Traffic Classes for different services and can prioritize the traffic accordingly.

This report covers both the 802.11b and the 802.11e WLANs. In the first place …

An Empirical Comparison Of Knowledge And Skill In The Context Of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Kathryn Demps Oct 2013

An Empirical Comparison Of Knowledge And Skill In The Context Of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Kathryn Demps

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background

We test whether traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) about how to make an item predicts a person’s skill at making it among the Tsimane’ (Bolivia). The rationale for this research is that the failure to distinguish between knowledge and skill might account for some of the conflicting results about the relationships between TEK, human health, and economic development.

Methods

We test the association between a commonly-used measure of individual knowledge (cultural consensus analysis) about how to make an arrow or a bag and a measure of individual skill at making these items, using ordinary least-squares regression. The study consists of …

Measurement Of [Special Characters Omitted] (Pp[Special Characters Omitted]Tt) In The[Special Characters Omitted]+ Jets Channel Using 4.7 Fb-1 Of Data From The Atlas Experiment Of The Large Hadron Collider, Anirvan Sircar

Doctoral Dissertations

The top quark is the heaviest of the known elementary particles in the Standard Model. Top quark decay can result into various final states; therefore, careful study of its production rate and other properties is very important for particle physics. With the shutdown of the Tevatron, The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the only facility currently capable of studying top quark properties. The data obtained by proton-proton collisions in the LHC is recorded by two general purpose detectors, ATLAS and CMS. The results in the dissertation are from the ATLAS detector. A new measurement is reported of &sgr;(pp [special …

Modeling And Control Of Nanoparticle Bloodstream Concentration For Cancer Therapies, Scarlett S. Bracey Oct 2013

Modeling And Control Of Nanoparticle Bloodstream Concentration For Cancer Therapies, Scarlett S. Bracey

Doctoral Dissertations

Currently, the most commonly used treatments for cancerous tumors (chemotherapy, radiation, etc.) have almost no method of monitoring the administration of the treatment for adverse effects in real time. Without any real time feedback or control, treatment becomes a "guess and check" method with no way of predicting the effects of the drugs based on the actual bioavailability to the patient's body. One particular drug may be effective for one patient, yet provide no benefit to another. Doctors and scientists do not routinely attempt to quantifiably explain this discrepancy. In this work, mathematical modeling and analysis techniques are joined together …

Multi-Segment Multi-Criteria Approach For Selection Of Trenchless Construction Methods, Ashikul Islam Oct 2013

Multi-Segment Multi-Criteria Approach For Selection Of Trenchless Construction Methods, Ashikul Islam

Doctoral Dissertations

The research work presented in this thesis has two broad objectives as well as five individual goals. The first objective is to search and determine the minimum cost and corresponding goodness-of-fit by using a different combination of methods that are capable of resolving the problem that exists in multiple segments. This approach can account for variations in unit price and the cost of the design and the inspection associated with multiple methods. The second objective is to calculate the minimum risk for the preferred solution set. The five individual goals are 1) reduction in total cost, 2) application of Genetic …
