Thou Cannot Create Perfection, Alyda Huerta '15

2013 Fall Semester

Listen! I entreat you to hear me, before you give vent to your opinion, for there are children and creatures alike brought forth into life each day. Some of them are born into the arms of happiness, and some, shunned by their creator at the moment of their first breath, are deemed unworthy and thrown savagely into the pits of unforgiving hell. And now, thou can listen to me and grant me thy agreement. One day, tormented ages thereafter still by the unforgiving murder of my creator, I happened across a piece of paper lying on the ground that possessed …

Arming Herself In Leaden Stupor: Janet's Repentance And The Role Of Female Alcoholism, Leah Kind

Faculty Publications & Research

George Eliot's fiction contains a wealth of figures who are touched by intoxication: both through their own imbibing, and (sometimes literally) because of others' drinking. As Kathleen McCormack1 has noted, the instances of drink are closely tied to the "manifestoes of realism in the early fiction" and that "...despite George Eliot's reputation for earnestness, responsibility, and even ponderousness, a remarkable number of her characters stagger through the novels with their perceptions blurred and reason distorted by unwise consumption of brandy, wine, beer, ale, patent medicines, and opium" (2, 40). In drawing freely upon this trait and using it frequently within …

A Vine Copula Approach For Analyzing Financial Risk And Co-Movement Of The Indonesian, Philippine And Thailand Stock Markets, Songsak Sriboonchitta, Jianxu Liu, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

This paper aims at analyzing the financial risk and co-movement of stock markets in three countries: Indonesia, Philippine and Thailand. It consists of analyzing the conditional volatility and test the leverage effect in the stock markets of the three countries. To capture the pairwise and conditional dependence between the variables, we use the method of vine copulas. In addition, we illustrate the computations of the value at risk and the expected shortfall using Monte Carlo simulation with copula based GJR-GARCH model. The empirical evidence shows that all the leverage effects add much to the capacity for explanation of the three …

Adsorption-Controlled Growth Of Bivo4 By Molecular-Beam Epitaxy, D. A. Hillsberry, D. A. Tenne

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Single-phase epitaxial films of the monoclinic polymorph of BiVO4 were synthesized by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy under adsorption-controlled conditions. The BiVO4 films were grown on (001) yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia (YSZ) substrates. Four-circle x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and Raman spectroscopy confirm the epitaxial growth of monoclinic BiVO4 with an atomically abrupt interface and orientation relationship (001)BiVO4 ∥ (001)YSZ with [100]BiVO4 ∥ [100]YSZ. Spectroscopic ellipsometry, STEM electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS), and x-ray absorption spectroscopy indicate that the films have a direct band gap of 2.5 ± 0.1 eV.

"Carving At The Joints": Using Issue Classes To Reframe Consumer Class Actions, Jenna C. Smith Oct 2013

"Carving At The Joints": Using Issue Classes To Reframe Consumer Class Actions, Jenna C. Smith

Washington Law Review

Achieving class certification in consumer litigation is a highly controversial and greatly debated area of civil procedure. Historically, certification under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 23(b)(3) has been difficult to achieve due to the tension between the presence of individual issues and Rule 23(b)(3)’s predominance, superiority, and management considerations. The future of certification for Rule 23(b)(3) classes was further put in question with the United States Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Wal-Mart v. Dukes in 2011, which enhanced the level of scrutiny courts apply at the Rule 23(a) level of analysis. The Court’s 2013 decisions in Comcast Corp. v. Behrend …

Suspended Lipid Bilayer For Optical And Electrical Measurements Of Single Ion Channel Proteins, Suneth P. Rajapaksha, Xuefei Wang, H. Peter Lu Oct 2013

Suspended Lipid Bilayer For Optical And Electrical Measurements Of Single Ion Channel Proteins, Suneth P. Rajapaksha, Xuefei Wang, H. Peter Lu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Making and holding an artificial lipid bilayer horizontally in an aqueous solution within the microscopic working distance of similar to 100 mu m are essential for simultaneous single molecule imaging and single ion-channel electrical current recording. However, preparation of such a lipid bilayer without a solid support is technically challenging. In a typical supported lipid bilayer, the asymmetric local environments and the strong perturbation of the underneath solid or dense surface can diverge the normal behavior of membrane proteins and lipids. On the other hand, the suspended lipid bilayers can provide a native local environment for the membrane proteins and …

A supramolecular sensor array composed of two fluorescent cucurbit[n]uril-type receptors (probe 1 and probe 2) displaying complementary selectivities was tested for its ability to detect and quantify drug-related amines. The fluorimetric titration of the individual probes showed highly variable and cross-reactive analyte-dependent changes in fluorescence. An excellent ability to recognize a variety of analytes was demonstrated in qualitative as well as quantitative assays. Importantly, a successful quantitative analysis of several analytes of interest was achieved in mixtures and in human urine. The throughput and sensitivity surpass those of the current state-of-the-art methods that usually require analyte solid-phase extraction …

Mapping The Excited State Potential Energy Surface Of A Retinal Chromophore Model With Multireference And Equation-Of-Motion Coupled-Cluster Methods, Samer Gozem, Federico Melaccio, Roland Lindh, Anna I. Krylov, Alexander A. Granovsky, Celestino Angeli, Massimo Olivucci

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The photoisomerization of the retinal chromophore of visual pigments proceeds along a complex reaction coordinate on a multidimensional surface that comprises a hydrogen-out-of-plane (HOOP) coordinate, a bond length alternation (BLA) coordinate, a single bond torsion and, finally, the reactive double bond torsion. These degrees of freedom are coupled with changes in the electronic structure of the chromophore and, therefore, the computational investigation of the photochemistry of such systems requires the use of a methodology capable of describing electronic structure changes along all those coordinates. Here, we employ the penta-2,4-dieniminium (PSB3) cation as a minimal model of the retinal chromophore of …

A Primer For Mathematical Modeling, Marla A. Sole Oct 2013

A Primer For Mathematical Modeling, Marla A. Sole

Publications and Research

With the implementation of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics recommendations and the adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, modeling has moved to the forefront of K-12 education. Modeling activities not only reinforce purposeful problem-solving skills, they also connect the mathematics students learn in school with the mathematics they will use outside of school. Instructors have found mathematical modeling difficult to teach. To successfully incorporate modeling activities I believe that curricular changes should be accompanied by professional development for curriculum developers, classroom teachers, and higher education professionals. This article serves as an introduction to modeling by …

Limits Of Luminescence Dating: An Update Regarding Quartz Of The Southern Alps Of New Zealand And The Olympic Mountains, Washington, Usa, Cianna E. Wyshnytzky, Tammy M. Rittenour

Graduate Student Posters

Late Pleistocene glacial sediments from the South Fork Hoh River valley in the Olympic Mountains, Washington, USA and the Lake Hawea valley in the Southern Alps, New Zealand were dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) on quartz and infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) on feldspar sand from 2011-2013. High sediment supply (typical of glacial environments), short transport distances, and sediment newly eroded from bedrock sources were expected to pose problems for luminescence dating in these locations. Samples were collected from a variety of depositional environments and inferred distances from the ice-front to assess how luminescence signals may vary due to these …

Assessing Attitudes Towards Global Climate Change Among Utah State University Faculty, Amy C. Rohman Oct 2013

Assessing Attitudes Towards Global Climate Change Among Utah State University Faculty, Amy C. Rohman

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Climate change is a polarizing issue in which there are significant differences in perception between the scientific community and the general public. The intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has formally acknowledged an increasing body of evidence that supports primarily human-caused climate change. No scientific organization has dissented, and over thirty national academies of the sciences have issued joint declarations confirming the evidence of anthropogenic climate change. Therefore, polarization is not caused by a lack of available scientific information. This study surveys Utah State University faculty to solicit their knowledge of and attitudes towards global climate change. Responses are assessed …

Ground-Based Observations With A Rayleigh-Mie-Raman Lidar From 15-120 Km, Leda Sox, Vincent B. Wickwar, Joshua P. Herron, David L. Barton, Matthew T. Emerick Oct 2013

Ground-Based Observations With A Rayleigh-Mie-Raman Lidar From 15-120 Km, Leda Sox, Vincent B. Wickwar, Joshua P. Herron, David L. Barton, Matthew T. Emerick

Graduate Student Posters

Rayleigh lidar systems have historically made ground-based observations of the upper atmosphere (stratosphere and mesosphere) from 35-90 km. This technology has helped fill the data collection gap between the troposphere and space. Recently our Rayleigh lidar group at the Atmospheric Lidar Observatory on the campus of Utah State University (42° N, 112° W) upgraded the original lidar system in order to extend the measurement range for neutral densities and temperatures to higher altitudes and has increased the upper limit, so far, from 90 to 110 km. Next, we will extend the lower altitude limit downward to 15 km. This will …

Vapor Distribution Above An Evaporating Sessile Drop, Peter Kelly-Zion, Christopher J. Pursell, N Hasbamrer, B Cardozo, K Gaughan, Kevin Nickels

Engineering Faculty Research

An experimental technique was developed that uses infrared tomography to measure the three-dimensional vapor distribution above an evaporating sessile drop. The technique was applied to measure the vapor distributions above evaporating drops of hexane and 3-methylpentane (3MP) at room temperature and pressure. The molecular masses of these two species are heavier than air and the vapor from the evaporating drop forms a flat, disk-shaped cloud. A Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) was used to measure the spectral absorbance along a set of paths passing through the vapor cloud. From a set of path-averaged absorbance measurements, a two-dimensional spatial concentration distribution …
