Rescheduling Oriented Dependent Tasks Spread Domain Computing, Tingwei Chen, Hongning Zhu, Yu Dai, Xianwen Hao

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

To narrow the scope of rescheduling tasks is one of the effective ways to improve the grid dependent tasks rescheduling efficiency. For how to determine the scope which should improve the efficiency of rescheduling problem as far as possible without affecting the application performance, this paper proposed the rescheduling tasks spread domain concept and its method of computation. Beginning with a minimum tasks set to rescheduling, the computing process is oriented by resource share conflict and data transmission dependent of tasks, and limited by the degree of task to optimize the performance of the whole application. Experimentation results show that …

Study On Location Algorithms Of Beamforming Based On Mvdr, Aidong Deng, Hang Tong, Jianeng Tang, Hao Cao

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Acoustic emission is an effective method of locating the rubbing fault. In order to solve the problem that satisfactory location accuracy is difficult to obtain because of the waveform distortion caused by signal propagation during the application of time delay estimation method in acoustic emission position estimation, beam-forming technique is applied to acoustic emission source location. Simulation studies have been made on the performance of near-field time-domain and frequency domain beam-forming in the location of rubbing acoustic emission source. The paper adopts the wideband signal minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) location estimation method based on sub-band decomposition to avoid the …

Software Vulnerability Patch Management With Semi-Markov Decision Process, Chien-Cheng Huang, Kwo-Jean Farn, Feng-Yu Lin, Frank Yeong-Sung Lin

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Information security incidents frequency has been increasing dramatically, the aim of this study is to analyze the state-space reachability problems through the transition of vulnerable status after the informative system vulnerability exposure. In this research we took into consideration the time factor to analyze the arrival time to reachable states problem discussed in stochastic Petri nets. The mean arrival time and variance of the process between starting from an initial state and arriving at reachable states. We will therefore elaborate a novel model based on the semi-Markov stochastic Petri nets model for analyzing the period between the exposure of the …

Performance Bounds For P2p Streaming System With Transcoding, Shuai Zeng, Lemin Li, Dan Liao

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we develop a fluid model that seeks to expose the fundamental characteristics and mathematical theory of peerto- peer streaming system with transcoding. We find out and prove that, to provide peers receiving data above some flow rate, there is a lower bound of server upload bandwidth in this kind of system. We give a flow rate allocation algorithm to achieve the minimal server upload bandwidth in the proof. We compare this lower bound with the minimal demand of server upload bandwidth of no transcoding system. And, we prove that, the demand of server upload bandwidth in transcoding …

Some Parallel Algorithms For A New System Of Quasi Variational Inequalities, Muhammad Aslam Noor, Khalida Inayat Noor

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we introduce a new system of quasi variational inequalities. The projection technique is used to establish the equivalence between this new system of quasi variational inequalities and the fixed point problem. The fixed point formulation enables us to suggest some parallel projection iterative methods for solving the system of quasi variational inequalities. Convergence analysis of the proposed methods is investigated. Several special cases are discussed. Results proved in this paper continue to hold for these problems.

Robust Sparse 2d Principal Component Analysis For Object Recognition, Jicheng Meng, Xiaolong Zheng Nov 2013

Robust Sparse 2d Principal Component Analysis For Object Recognition, Jicheng Meng, Xiaolong Zheng

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We extensively investigate robust sparse two dimensional principal component analysis (RS2DPCA) that makes the best of semantic, structural information and suppresses outliers in this paper. The RS2DPCA combines the advantages of sparsity, 2D data format and L1-norm for data analysis. We also prove that RS2DPCA can offer a good solution of seeking spare 2D principal components. To verify the performance of RS2DPCA in object recognition, experiments are performed on three famous face databases, i.e. Yale, ORL, and FERET, and the experimental results show that the proposed RS2DPCA outperform the same class of algorithms for face recognition, such as robust sparse …

Different Types Of Periodic Activities In A Calcium Oscillation Model, Li Yuanhua, Zhou Yi, Ji Quanbao

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, a model proposed by Marhl et al. is considered to investigate the effect of several parameters on the calcium bursting oscillation behavior. Different types of bursting are presented. Fast-slow burster analysis and first return map are used to explain the mechanism of the four types of bursting. The results are instructive for understanding the role of these parameters played in complex dynamics in the Marhl-Haberichter calcium oscillation model.

H?Jek-Rényi Type Inequalities And Strong Law Of Large Numbers For Nod Sequences, Ma Songlin

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In the paper, we get the precise results of H´ajek-R´enyi type inequalities for the partial sums of negatively orthant dependent sequences, which improve the results of Theorem 3.1 and Corollary 3.2 in Kim (2006). In addition, the Marcinkiewicz type strong law of large numbers is obtained. At last, the strong stability for weighted sums of negatively orthant dependent sequences is discussed.

A Dynamic Programming Algorithm For Circular Single-Stranded Dna Tiles Secondary Structure Prediction, Zhang Kai, Huang Xinquan, Shi Xiaolong, Qiang Xiaoli, Song Tao, Shi Xinzhu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The design of DNA sequences is critical for many research fields such as DNA self-assembly, DNA hybridization arrays, DNA computing, and PCR-based applications. DNA secondary structure prediction is the key part for these DNA nanotechnologies. In this paper, we present a dynamic programming algorithm to predict the secondary structure of single-stranded DNA tiles. The algorithm calculates all possible maximum matches based on the nearest-neighbour model and global energy minimization. Experimental results show that the algorithm performers significantly to predict secondary structures for single-stranded DNA tiles.

Q-Beta Polynomials And Their Applications, Yilmaz Simsek Nov 2013

Q-Beta Polynomials And Their Applications, Yilmaz Simsek

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The aim of this paper is to construct generating functions for q-beta polynomials. By using these generating functions, we define the q -beta polynomials and also derive some fundamental properties of these polynomials. We give some functional equations and partial differential equations (PDEs) related to these generating functions. By using these equations, we find some identities related to these polynomials, binomial coefficients, the gamma function and the beta function. We obtain a relation between the qbeta polynomials and the q-Bernstein basis functions. We give relations between the q-Beta polynomials, the Bernoulli polynomials, the Euler polynomials and the Stirling numbers. We …

Online Anomaly Detection For Service-Oriented Components In Osgi-Based Applications, Tao Wang, Jun Wei, Wenbo Zhang, Hua Zhong Nov 2013

Online Anomaly Detection For Service-Oriented Components In Osgi-Based Applications, Tao Wang, Jun Wei, Wenbo Zhang, Hua Zhong

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

OSGi has become one of the most promising frameworks for managing service-oriented and component-based applications. The OSGi-based service-oriented components delivered by different vendors are usually black-box program units which lack source code and design documents. Thus, it is difficult to evaluate their quality by static code analysis, and the defective components may lead to the failure of the whole system eventually. In this paper, we propose an online method for detecting anomalous service-oriented components in OSGi-based applications. A thread-tracing method is presented to monitor resource utilization and interactions between components. The method considers both the dynamic service invocation and static …

Methods For Optimizing Opencl Applications On Heterogeneous Multicore Architectures, Slo-Li Chu, Chih-Chieh Hsiao Nov 2013

Methods For Optimizing Opencl Applications On Heterogeneous Multicore Architectures, Slo-Li Chu, Chih-Chieh Hsiao

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Heterogeneous multicore architectures with CPU and add-on GPUs or streaming processors are now widely used in computer systems. These GPUs provide substantially more computation capability and memory bandwidth compared to traditional multi-cores. Also, because they are highly programmable, they provide the computational performance needed for realistic graphics rendering. Applications with general computations can also be leveraged onto these GPUs. This study discusses the architectures of these highly efficient GPUs and applies a unified programming standard called OpenCL to fully utilize their capabilities. Despite their great potential, applications of these GPUs are challenging because of their diverse underlying architectural characteristics. In …

Multi-Physical Study Of Mems Resonators And Oscillators, Xiaobo Guo Nov 2013

Multi-Physical Study Of Mems Resonators And Oscillators, Xiaobo Guo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

First, this research presents experimental and theoretical investigation of the response of micro scale dual-plate thermal-piezoresistive resonators (TPR) and self-sustained oscillators (TPO) to different gases and pressures. It is demonstrated that the resonant frequency of such devices follows particular trends in response to the changes in the surrounding gas and its pressure. A mathematical model has been derived to explain the damping dependent frequency shift characteristic of TPO. The solution of the model indicates that the stiffness of the actuator beam decreases as the value of damping coefficient drops at lower gas density caused by the change in the gas …

Development Of A Biosensor For Investigating Membrane Curvature Sorting, Joshua C. Black Nov 2013

Development Of A Biosensor For Investigating Membrane Curvature Sorting, Joshua C. Black

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The physical structure of cellular membranes plays a critical role in lipid and protein sorting. A novel biosensor was developed to probe the influence of curvature on sorting. This biosensor mimics large, two-dimensional membranes in dynamic equilibrium, achieves high spatial resolution between curvature and molecules of interest, and has high sensitivity, enough for single particle detection. The biosensor consists of continuous supported lipid bilayer formed over nanoparticles (40 to 200 nm diameter) deposited on a glass substrate. The nanoparticles determine the extent of curvature. This biosensor is the first to observe large-scale 2-dimensional diffusion of biomolecules on a supported lipid …

Physics Portfolios: A Picture Of Student Understanding, Brooke A. Whitworth, Randy L. Bell Nov 2013

Physics Portfolios: A Picture Of Student Understanding, Brooke A. Whitworth, Randy L. Bell

Publications

Traditionally, teachers assess students' physics understanding through lab activities, responses to open-ended word problems, and tests. But there's another way to measure student understanding, one in which students apply their learning to the world around them. This article shows how to implement student portfolios, which allow students to set goals they can monitor throughout the year and actively participate in assessment. When students build portfolios, they can evaluate and reflect on their own work, promoting engagement with the course and content (Danielson and Abrutyn 1997), and teachers can better assess students' goal movement and see growth in students' conceptual understanding. …

Automatic Domain Identification For Linked Open Data, Sarasi Lalithsena, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth, Prateek Jain

Kno.e.sis Publications

Linked Open Data (LOD) has emerged as one of the largest collections of interlinked structured datasets on the Web. Although the adoption of such datasets for applications is increasing, identifying relevant datasets for a specific task or topic is still challenging. As an initial step to make such identification easier, we provide an approach to automatically identify the topic domains of given datasets. Our method utilizes existing knowledge sources, more specifically Freebase, and we present an evaluation which validates the topic domains we can identify with our system. Furthermore, we evaluate the effectiveness of identified topic domains for the purpose …

Gesture As A Window To Justification And Proof, Caro C. Williams-Pierce Nov 2013

Gesture As A Window To Justification And Proof, Caro C. Williams-Pierce

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship

The role of the body, particularly gesture, in supporting mathematical reasoning is an emerging area of research in mathematics education. In the present study, we examine undergraduate students providing a justification for a task about a system of alternating gears, which involves concepts of number relating to even/odd patterns. Some participants were directed to perform gestures relevant to alternation and parity before attempting their justification, while others were not. Although these directed actions did not seem to influence the gestures participants used to solve the problem, we found an important relationship between gesture and mathematical reasoning. In particular, certain types …

Wallace And Incipient Structures: A World Of "More Recondite" Influences, Charles H. Smith Nov 2013

Wallace And Incipient Structures: A World Of "More Recondite" Influences, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

Alfred Russel Wallace is well-known for his co-discovery of the principle of natural selection. Natural selection is usually considered a process, but it is not clear that Wallace regarded it in exactly these terms. In fact he more likely thought of the relationships involved as representing what we would now term a “state space,” a negative feedback loop wherein populations are maintained at healthy levels through elimination of the unfit. Both before and after the advent of natural selection Wallace clung to the idea that “more recondite forces” were shaping the nature and direction of evolution; this is especially evident …

A Bioinformatics Method For Identifying Rna Structures Within Human Cells, Stephen Donald Huff Nov 2013

A Bioinformatics Method For Identifying Rna Structures Within Human Cells, Stephen Donald Huff

Physics Seminars

Single-stranded, negative-sense RNA (ssRNA-) serves many varied roles within the eukaryotic cell. Currently known examples include snRNA (short nuclear), snoRNA (short nucleolar), tRNA (transfer), siRNA (silencing), miRNA (micro), and others [1,2]. Unknown examples are currently being studied, also, including the long, non-coding ssRNA- found in the nuclear paraspeckle, a component of unknown function located within the eukaryotic nucleus and comprised of ssRNA- sequences transcribed from so-called ‘junk’ DNA [3,4]. While a growing list of confirmed physiological functions have been attributed to ssRNA-, additional roles likely exist and have yet to be discovered. Further, since ssRNA- is known to bind to …
