Testing The Assumption Of Non-Differential Misclassification In Case-Control Studies, Tze-San Lee, Qin Hui Nov 2013

Testing The Assumption Of Non-Differential Misclassification In Case-Control Studies, Tze-San Lee, Qin Hui

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

One of the not yet solved issues regarding the misclassification in case-control studies is whether the misclassification rates are the same for both cases and controls. Currently, a common practice is to assume that the rates are the same, that is, the non-differential misclassification assumption. However, it has been suspected that this assumption may not be valid in practical applications. Unfortunately, no test is available so far to test the validity of the non-differential misclassification assumption. A method is presented to test the validity of non-differential misclassification assumption in case-control studies with 2 × 2 tables when validation data are …

Ordered Logit Regression Modeling Of The Self-Rated Health In Hawai‘I, With Comparisons To The Ols Model, Hosik Min

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Despite the ordinal nature of Self-Rated Health (SRH) variable, logistic regression models or regression models have been used without adequate justification for these applications. It is shown that ordered-logit regression model is the appropriate statistical strategy to estimate SRH, whereas the Ordinary LeastSquares model leads to biased conclusions.

Approximation Multivariate Distribution Of Main Indices Of Tehran Stock Exchange With Pair-Copula, G. Parham, A. Daneshkhah, O. Chatrabgoun

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The multivariate distribution of five main indices of Tehran stock exchange is approximated using a pair-copula model. A vine graphical model is used to produce an n-dimensional copula. This is accomplished using a flexible copula called a minimum information (MI) copula as a part of pair-copula construction. Obtained results show that the achieved model has a good level of approximation.

Analysis Of Compactly Supported Transformations For Landmark-Based Image Registration, Roberto Cavoretto, Alessandra De Rossi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper we consider landmark-based image registration using radial basis function interpolation schemes. More precisely, we analyze some landmark-based image transformations using compactly supported radial basis functions such as Wendland’s, Wu’s, and Gneiting’s functions. Comparisons of interpolation techniques are performed and numerical experiments show differences in accuracy and smoothness of them in some test cases. Finally, a real-life case with medical images is considered.

Cellular Automata For The Flow Simulations On The Earth Surface, Optimization Computation Process, Juraj Cirbus, Michal Podhoranyi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The spreading of water across terrain is not a simple and isolated process. The spread of water is a part of the more general water cycle. Many commercial software exist for water modelling, but their correct use requires a considerable knowledge of water modelling, and about the study area. Using the relatively simple principle of cellular automata (CA) it is possible to obtain results which compare well with real measurements. This article describes using a CA for simulating the spreading of liquid, using comparatively simple rules and conditions which include several factors affecting the spreading of water such as slope, …

Some Generalizations Of Pochhammer’S Symbol And Their Associated Families Of Hypergeometric Functions And Hypergeometric Polynomials, Rekha Srivastava

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In 2012, H. M. Srivastava et al. [37] introduced and studied a number of interesting fundamental properties and characteristics of a family of potentially useful incomplete hypergeometric functions. The definitions of these incomplete hypergeometric functions were based essentially upon some generalization of the Pochhammer symbol by mean of the incomplete gamma functions g (s, x) and G (s, x). Our principal objective in this article is to present a systematic investigation of several further properties of these incomplete hypergeometric functions and some general classes of the incomplete hypergeometric polynomials which are associated with them. Various (known or new) special cases …

An Optimal Algorithm For Energy Recovery Of Hydraulic Electromagnetic Energy-Regenerative Shock Absorber, Zhigang Fang, Xuexun Guo, Lin Xu, Han Zhang

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper presents a new kind of shock absorber, hydraulic electromagnetic energy-regenerative shock absorber (HESA), which can recover energy from vibration of vehicles. The road excitation frequency, load resistance and damping ratio are found to greatly affect the energy recovery of HESA. Based on a quarter-car model, the optimal load resistance and damping ratio for maximizing the energy-recyclable power are discussed. The results indicate that for any excitation frequency, the energy-recyclable power first increases then decreases with the load resistance increase, and the optimal load resistance is changeable as the excitation frequency changes. Moreover, the energy-recyclable power is more sensitive to …

Options Pricing In Jump Diffusion Markets During Financial Crisis, Youssef El-Khatib, Mohamed Ali Hajji, Mohammed Al-Refai

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we suggest a jump diffusion model in markets during financial crisis. Using risk-neutral pricing, we derive a partial differential equation (P.D.E.) for the prices of European options. We find a closed form solution of the P.D.E. in the particular case where the stock price is too large. Then, we use such a solution as a boundary condition in the numerical treatment of the P.D.E. for any range of stock price. The numerical method adopted is the unconditionally stable Crank-Nicolson method. Illustrative examples are presented.

On Linearization By Generalized Sundman Transformations Of A Class Of Liénard Type Equations And Its Generalization, A. G. Johnpillai, F. M. Mahomed

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We study the linearization of a class of Li´enard type nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equations from the generalized Sundman transformation viewpoint. The linearizing generalized Sundman transformation for the class of equations is constructed. The transformation is used to map the underlying class of equations into a linear second-order ordinary differential equation which is not in the Laguerre form. The general solution of this class of equations is obtained by integrating the linearized equation and applying the generalized Sundman transformation. Moreover, we apply a Riccati transformation to a general linear third-order variable coefficients ordinary differential equation to extend the underlying class …

Quantum Modal Structure Of A Trapped Atom In Evanescent Laguerre- Gaussian Beams, Saud A. Al-Awfi Nov 2013

Quantum Modal Structure Of A Trapped Atom In Evanescent Laguerre- Gaussian Beams, Saud A. Al-Awfi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We investigate the quantum behavior of the neutral atoms trapped by the two-dimensional potential due to an optical vortex. Our model is based on the pure optical trapped of sodium atoms in evanescent Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) light. If the LG light is tuned to the blue of the atomic resonance line, atoms will experience repulsive potential, which push them away from the high intensity region to the low intensity region. The parameters selected in this evaluation are taken to guarantee that atoms are sufficiently cooled below the recoil limit to permit several quasi harmonics trapped quantum states.

Joint Channel Coding Based On Ldpc Codes With Gaussian Kernel Reflecton And Cs Redundancy, Fei Zhong, Shuxu Guo, Xu Xu

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper proposes a new joint decoding algorithm frame based on compressed sensing CS and LDPC (Low-Density Parity-Check) codes. Redundant information can be effectively extracted and amplified by CS reconstruction as a compensation to correct decoding of LDPC codes. We adopt Gaussian kernel function of image segmentation as a reflection. Simulation results indicate, compared with LDPC algorithm, the algorithm presented in this paper can obviously make BER (bit error ratio) lower and improve system decoding performance, and different variance of Gaussian kernel function can obtain different results.
