The Tragedy Of The Anticommons: A Concise Introduction And Lexicon, Michael Heller Jan 2013

The Tragedy Of The Anticommons: A Concise Introduction And Lexicon, Michael Heller

Faculty Scholarship

This article gives a concise introduction to the ‘tragedy of the anticommons.’ The anticommons thesis is simple: when too many people own pieces of one thing, nobody can use it. Usually, private ownership creates wealth. But too much ownership has the opposite effect – it leads to wasteful underuse. This is a free market paradox that shows up all across the global economy. If too many owners control a single resource, cooperation breaks down, wealth disappears, and everybody loses. Conceptually, underuse in an anticommons mirrors the familiar problem of overuse in a ‘tragedy of the commons.’ The field of anticommons …

Singular Value Inequalities: New Approaches To Conjectures, Peter Chilstrom Jan 2013

Singular Value Inequalities: New Approaches To Conjectures, Peter Chilstrom

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Singular values have been found to be useful in the theory of unitarily invariant norms, as well as many modern computational algorithms. In examining singular value inequalities, it can be seen how these can be related to eigenvalues and how several algebraic inequalities can be preserved and written in an analogous singular value form. We examine the fundamental building blocks to the modern theory of singular value inequalities, such as positive matrices, matrix norms, block matrices, and singular value decomposition, then use these to examine new techniques being used to prove singular value inequalities, and also look at existing conjectures.

Teachers' Perceptions Of Cultural Change In A Challenged High School During The Implementation Of The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, Victoria Crowell Jan 2013

Teachers' Perceptions Of Cultural Change In A Challenged High School During The Implementation Of The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, Victoria Crowell

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Academically failing schools are under scrutiny from government education administrators, policymakers, and the general public, due to chronic inabilities to lower dropout rates and to educate students who can pass high-stakes graduation assessments. States’ efforts to adhere to the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act have led to the development of accountability systems to determine adequate yearly progress (AYP) and to assign schools grades, as well as wholesale reassessment of current educational programs, which are often replaced with more rigorous curricula.

Among curricular programs that have been sought as reform measures for academically failing schools is the International Baccalaureate Program …

Ecohydrology Effects Of An Invasive Grass (Phalaris Arundinacea) On Semi-Arid Riparian Zones, Adam D. Gebauer Jan 2013

Ecohydrology Effects Of An Invasive Grass (Phalaris Arundinacea) On Semi-Arid Riparian Zones, Adam D. Gebauer

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Riparian areas (floodplains) provide key ecological functions that are linked to the ecohydrology however; they are particularly susceptible to invasion by alien species. In much of the western United States, riparian zones are shifting from native woody and herbaceous species to invasive grass dominated ecosystems that may alter hydrology, including changes to stream flow. Compared to the woody species they often replace, dense grass stands may have higher rates of growth (productivity) and water loss through leaves (transpiration), yet may access shallower water sources and thus reduce stream flow. In eastern Washington, many streams experience low flow that degrades water …

Population Models, Jessica Hauer

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

This thesis will examine mathematical interpretations of biological situations through the study of differential equations. It will first explore the interactions of the lynx and hare populations in Canada based on data retrieved by the Hudson Bay Company. The purpose of this study is to find a suitable mathematical model, namely that of a three-variable Lotka-Volterra system. Also, the paper will explore short-term infectious disease models as they relate to particular epidemics throughout history, including the Iowa Mumps outbreak of 1966 and the Bubonic Plaque. The thesis will then work to make sense of the rise and fall patterns in …

Satellite-Based Estimates Of Antarctic Surface Meltwater Fluxes, Luke D. Trusel, Karen E. Frey, Sarah B. Das, Peter Kuipers Munneke, Michiel R. Van Den Broeke Jan 2013

Satellite-Based Estimates Of Antarctic Surface Meltwater Fluxes, Luke D. Trusel, Karen E. Frey, Sarah B. Das, Peter Kuipers Munneke, Michiel R. Van Den Broeke

Geography

This study generates novel satellite-derived estimates of Antarctic-wide annual (1999-2009) surface meltwater production using an empirical relationship between radar backscatter from the QuikSCAT (QSCAT) satellite and melt calculated from in situ energy balance observations. The resulting QSCAT-derived melt fluxes significantly agree with output from the regional climate model RACMO2.1 and with independent ground-based observations. The high-resolution (4.45 km) QSCAT-based melt fluxes uniquely detect interannually persistent and intense melt (>400 mm water equivalent (w.e.) year-1) on interior Larsen C Ice Shelf that is not simulated by RACMO2.1. This supports a growing understanding of the importance of a föhn effect in …

Global Land Governance: From Territory To Flow?, Thomas Sikor, Graeme Auld, Anthony J. Bebbington, Tor A. Benjaminsen, Bradford S. Gentry, Carol Hunsberger, Anne Marie Izac, Matias E. Margulis, Tobias Plieninger, Heike Schroeder, Caroline Upton

Geography

This article reviews recent research on contemporary transformations of global land governance. It shows how changes in global governance have facilitated and responded to radical revalorizations of land, together driving the intensified competition and struggles over land observed in many other contributions to this special issue. The rules in place to govern land use are shifting from 'territorial' toward 'flow-centered' arrangements, the latter referring to governance that targets particular flows of resources or goods, such as certification of agricultural or wood products. The intensifying competition over land coupled with shifts toward flow-centered governance has generated land uses involving new forms …

Do Cryoconite Holes Have The Potential To Be Significant Sources Of C, N, And P To Downstream Depauperate Ecosystems Of Taylor Valley, Antarctica?, Elizabeth A. Bagshaw, Martyn Tranter, Andrew G. Fountain, Kathleen A. Welch, Hassan J. Basagic, W. Berry Lyons Jan 2013

Basagic, W. Berry Lyons

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nutrient recycling occurs in hydrologically isolated cryoconite holes on the glaciers of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. Biogeochemical processes enrich the cryoconite holes with solute and nutrients compared to the source sediment and glacier ice. The position of the glacier within the landscape affects the physical and biogeochemical character of the cryoconite holes, with those found in more biologically productive areas of the valley having higher concentrations of C, N, and P and higher pH. Comprehensive assessment of the quality and quantity of bioavailable C, N, and P shows that the cryoconite holes represent a significant store of nutrient in …

This document describes efforts to best characterize seismogenic deformation in and near California. The rate of hazardous earthquakes in California is expected to be proportional to deformation rates; in particular, the rates at which faults slip. Fault slip rates are determined from offsets of geologic and geomorphic features of measured age and by modeling geodetically determined surface displacement rates. Extensive use of geodesy in the form of Global Positioning System (GPS) observations is a new feature brought into the Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities (WGCEP) forecasts for the Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast, version 3 (UCERF3) model. Geodetic measurements …

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the preferred instructional design strategies for the preparation of pre-service teachers who will deliver integrated STEM lessons. The research objectives were threefold and included identifying a preferred definition of integrated STEM education, developing its purpose statement, and creating a list of instructional design strategies that could be used for designing, planning, delivering, and assessing integrated STEM instruction.

The Delphi method was selected as the optimum approach for data collection, since STEM education is still a growing phenomenon lacking consensus in its interpretations of meaning and practice. Gaining group consensus from expert teacher …

Exploratory Coverage In Limited Mobility Sensor Networks, Mark Snyder, Sriram Chellappan, Mayur Thakur Jan 2013

Exploratory Coverage In Limited Mobility Sensor Networks, Mark Snyder, Sriram Chellappan, Mayur Thakur

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Autonomous drones are employed with ever-increasing frequency in applications ranging from search and rescue, detection of forest fires, and battlefield/civilian surveillance. In this paper, we study the effects of limited mobility in such mobile sensor platforms, from the perspective of the effect limited mobility has on coverage effectiveness. We define a problem that we call Exploratory Coverage in Limited Mobility Sensor Networks, wherein the objective is to move a number of mobile sensors to fully explore (and hence, sense every point in) a target area in order to detect any critical event that has already occurred in the area. Further, …

Characterization And Visualization Of Sophisticated Scanning Attacks, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Robert F. Erbacher Jan 2013

Characterization And Visualization Of Sophisticated Scanning Attacks, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Robert F. Erbacher

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Detection of sophisticated stealthy network scans requires analyzing large amounts of network data collected over long periods of time. The sheer volume of the data prohibits efficient detection from a pure algorithmic approach. However timely detection of such sophisticated scanning attacks is critical since the attacker employing these approaches is usually well-resourced and potentially can bring high impact to the network than a naive attacker can. To detect such sophisticated scans, we propose the integration of algorithmic detection and visualization for human detection to simultaneously optimize computational complexity and human analyst time. The proposed approach provides real world detection capabilities …

Optimization Of Object Queries On Collections Using Annotations For The String Valued Attributes, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Sanjay K. Madria, Thomas Weigert Jan 2013

Optimization Of Object Queries On Collections Using Annotations For The String Valued Attributes, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Sanjay K. Madria, Thomas Weigert

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Object oriented programming languages raised the level of abstraction by supporting the explicit first-class query constructs in the programming codes. The query constructs can be optimized by leveraging the techniques of query optimization from the domain of databases. The existing optimization approaches such as JQL, however, incur high run time overhead as optimizations are performed only at run time. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an approach that performs the query optimization at compile time utilizing the metadata annotations in the source code. The proposed approach first collects the data from the sample execution of the program and extracts the …

An Empirical Study On Symptoms Of Heavier Internet Usage Among Young Adults, Sai Preethi Vishwanathan, Levi Malott, Sriram Chellappan, P. Murali Doraiswamy

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Understanding negative consequences of heavy Internet use on mental health is a topic that is gaining significant traction recently. A number of studies have investigated heavy Internet usage, especially among young adults in relation to online games, social media and email. While such studies do provide valuable insights, Internet usage so far has been characterized by means of self-reported surveys only that may suffer from errors and biases. In this paper, we report the findings of a two-month empirical study on heavy Internet usage among students conducted at a college campus. The novelty of the study is that it is …

An Efficient Trust Propagation Scheme For Predicting Trustworthiness Of Service Providers In Service-Oriented Social Networks, Yu Xu, Jianxun Liu, Mingdong Tang, Xiaoqing Frank Liu Jan 2013

An Efficient Trust Propagation Scheme For Predicting Trustworthiness Of Service Providers In Service-Oriented Social Networks, Yu Xu, Jianxun Liu, Mingdong Tang, Xiaoqing Frank Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Perception of trustworthiness of service providers is a fundamental need in service selection. Trust propagation has been used to predict trustworthiness of service providers in service-oriented social networks. However, existing trust propagation methods may suffer from a scalability problem, i.e., their computation time is likely too high to be acceptable in practice, especially when they are applied to very large-scale service-oriented social networks. Moreover, they rarely consider the structural properties of social networks to optimize their performance. This paper proposes an efficient trust propagation scheme for predicting trust in service-oriented social networks. It exploits the specific structural properties of social …

Heteroclinic And Homoclinic Connections Between The Sun-Earth Triangular Points And Quasi-Satellite Orbits For Solar Observations, Pedro J. Llanos, Gerald R. Hintz, Martin W. Lo, James K. Miller Jan 2013

Heteroclinic And Homoclinic Connections Between The Sun-Earth Triangular Points And Quasi-Satellite Orbits For Solar Observations, Pedro J. Llanos, Gerald R. Hintz, Martin W. Lo, James K. Miller

Publications

Investigation of new orbit geometries exhibits a very attractive behavior for a spacecraft to monitor space weather coming from the Sun. Several orbit transfer mechanisms are analyzed as potential alternatives to monitor solar activity such as a sub-solar orbit or quasi-satellite orbit and short and long heteroclinic and homoclinic connections between the triangular points L4 and L5 and the collinear point L3 of the CRTBP (circular restricted three-body problem) in the Sun-Earth system. These trajectories could serve as channels through where material can be transported from L5 to L3 by performing small maneuvers at the departure of the Trojan orbit. …

A Thermodynamic Analysis Of An Intense North American Arctic Air Mass, Jessica K. Turner, John Gyakum, Shawn M. Milrad Jan 2013

A Thermodynamic Analysis Of An Intense North American Arctic Air Mass, Jessica K. Turner, John Gyakum, Shawn M. Milrad

Publications

Northwestern Canada is a genesis region of arctic air masses often considered to be formed primarily through radiative processes. However, the details of their life cycle are poorly understood. This paper examines the formation, maintenance, and dissipation of an intense and long-lived arctic air mass, using a thermodynamic budget analysis.

The airmass formation is characterized by a deep-layer, multistage process that begins with snow falling into a nascent air mass. Radiative cooling from cloud tops begins the process. After the snow abates and clear skies are observed, the surface temperature drops rapidly, aided by the high emissivity of fresh snow …

Topics In Voice Echo Cancellation, Pratik Vijay Shah Jan 2013

Topics In Voice Echo Cancellation, Pratik Vijay Shah

Doctoral Dissertations

"Acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) is a well studied problem. The underlying assumption in most echo cancellation solutions is that the echo path following the reference signal is completely linear. However, in many handheld devices, the echo path following the reference signal is nonlinear. The reason for this nonlinearity in the echo path is the use of smaller and cheaper loudspeakers. In order to cut the manufacturing cost, device manufactures use cheaper loudspeakers such that they satisfy the carrier specifications. Such loudspeaker can be easily over driven in to their nonlinear region and thus add nonlinearities to the downlink path. This …

As the production of artifact is only part of the DSR process, the authors discuss …

Optimized Techniques For Real-Time Microwave And Millimeter Wave Sar Imaging, Joseph T. Case Jan 2013

Optimized Techniques For Real-Time Microwave And Millimeter Wave Sar Imaging, Joseph T. Case

Doctoral Dissertations

"Microwave and millimeter wave synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-based imaging techniques, used for nondestructive evaluation (NDE), have shown tremendous usefulness for the inspection of a wide variety of complex composite materials and structures. Studies were performed for the optimization of uniform and nonuniform sampling (i.e., measurement positions) since existing formulations of SAR resolution and sampling criteria do not account for all of the physical characteristics of a measurement (e.g., 2D limited-size aperture, electric field decreasing with distance from the measuring antenna, etc.) and nonuniform sampling criteria supports sampling below the Nyquist rate. The results of these studies demonstrate optimum sampling given …

Some Insights For The Prediction Of Near-Wall Turbulence, Farid Karimpour, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy Jan 2013

Some Insights For The Prediction Of Near-Wall Turbulence, Farid Karimpour, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we revisit the eddy viscosity formulation to highlight a number of important issues that have direct implications for the prediction of near-wall turbulence. For steady wall-bounded turbulent flows, we make the equilibrium assumption between rates of production (P) and dissipation (ε) of turbulent kinetic energy (κ) in the near-wall region to propose that the eddy viscosity should be given by vt ε/S2, where S is the mean shear rate. We then argue that the appropriate velocity scale is given by (STL)-1/2 k1/2 where TL = k ε is the turbulence (decay) time scale. The …
