Measuring And Modeling Nonlinear Vibrations In Structures With Mechanical Joints, Suzanna Gilbert Dec 2025

Measuring And Modeling Nonlinear Vibrations In Structures With Mechanical Joints, Suzanna Gilbert

Theses and Dissertations

Many assembled structures have bolted or riveted joints. Aside from providing a convenient method of assembly, mechanical joints have an important effect on the structure's dynamic response to its environment. Friction and microslip within the joints help to damp out unwanted vibration. However, the joints also introduce nonlinearity into the response. Most notably, the natural vibrational modes of the structure no longer have constant natural frequencies and damping ratios. Rather, they shift as a function of vibration amplitude. Several methods exist to characterize the dynamics of nonlinear systems, yet they are generally validated on simple benchmark structures, and many still …

Insights From The Evolution Of Transport Technologies, 1800–2020: Energy Use, Transitions, And Efficiency, Bernardo Tostes, Matthew Kuperus Heun, Sofia T. Henriques, Paul E. Brockway, Tânia Sousa

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The replacement of fossil fuels by electricity and other alternative fuels in transport will not be that sector’s first energy transition. Using transport history as an analogue for the future can offer helpful insights for today’s policymakers. The present work investigates the evolution of world energy use in the transport sector, identifying its energy transitions (at the final and useful stages), and evaluating the impact of past transitions on energy use over the period 1800–2020. To perform these analyses, a novel long-run dataset of energy use and efficiencies of water, rail, road, and air transport was developed. Our main findings …

Fault Structure, Deformation Mechanisms, And Why Fault Zones Matter To Society, Elizabeth S. Petrie, David A. Ferrill, Kelly K. Bradbury, James P. Evans Dec 2025

Fault Structure, Deformation Mechanisms, And Why Fault Zones Matter To Society, Elizabeth S. Petrie, David A. Ferrill, Kelly K. Bradbury, James P. Evans

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Faults are widespread geologic structures that form in sediment and all rock types, occur in all tectonic regimes, and can be a blessing or a curse to society. Faults and fault zones act as conduits for underground movement of water and as plumbing systems for aquifers and springs essential for human habitation in many semi-arid and arid regions worldwide. Faults also provide pathways for natural oil and gas migration and high-permeability zones in hydrocarbon reservoirs, as well as barriers contributing to trapping and reservoir compartmentalization. By enhancing permeability in many geothermal energy systems, faults can be essential for fluid circulation …

Content Aware Intra And Inter Prediction Using Texture And Motion Analysis, Yashaswi Karthik Reddy Danda Dec 2025

Content Aware Intra And Inter Prediction Using Texture And Motion Analysis, Yashaswi Karthik Reddy Danda

Theses

Modern video codecs rely on highly optimized block based intra and inter prediction frameworks,  in which block partitioning is determined through exhaustive rate distortion optimization (RDO)  searches. These exhaustive searches evaluate many possible block configurations to identify the  partitioning that minimizes overall rate distortion cost, and they have proven extremely effective  across diverse visual content. This thesis explores a complementary perspective by investigating  whether block partitioning can be guided more directly by content characteristics specifically,  texture complexity for intra prediction and motion complexity or motion density for inter  prediction.  For intra prediction, we introduce a texture adaptive approach that utilizes …

Enhancing Advanced Persistent Threat Detection With Federated Learning And Neural Networks For Secure Cloud Computer Environment, Baydaa Flayyih Hasan, Wafaa Ayoub Kassara, Bushra Raad Zahi

Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity

Rapid internet expansion and global cloud storage use have heightened the risk of stealthy, persistent, multi-stage Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs). Distributed and resource-limited cloud environments make identifying these stealthy and dynamic threats difficult for traditional Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs). This paper present FedNN-APT, a Federated Learning (FL) and hybrid Neural Network (NN) APT detection system to overcome these difficulties. High detection accuracy and distributed, privacy-preserving training over several cloud devices are achieved by this approach. FedNN-APT integrates Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to learn temporal and spatial APT behavior features effectively. The framework trains local models …

A Novel Of Bounded Zeghdoudi Distribution: Estimations, Simulation And Applications, Mohammed Elgarhy, Hanene Hamdani, Laxmi Prasad Sapkota, Ahmed M. Gemeay

Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity

In this article, we introduce a new unit Zeghoudi distribution, which is called the bounded Zeghoudi distribution (BZD), an innovative modification of the Zeghoudi distribution (ZD). This new suggested distribution retains the original ZD’s simplicity while improving modeling flexibility and accuracy for data constrained to the unit interval. The BZD displays numerous significant characteristics, including decreased, left-skewed, right-skewed, and unimodal probability density functions, but the hazard rate function can be J-shaped, U-shaped, and bathtub-shaped. Some important statistical features of the BZD, such as moments, mean, variance, moment generating function, lower and upper incomplete moments, mean residual life, mean inactivity time, …

Application Of Adversarial Volumetric Cnns To 3d Face Generation Using Latent Space Gaussian Embeddings, Ali Raad Abdulkareem, Marwa Jabberi, Islem Jarraya, Tarek M. Hamdani, Khmaies Ouahada, Adel M. Alimi Dec 2025

Application Of Adversarial Volumetric Cnns To 3d Face Generation Using Latent Space Gaussian Embeddings, Ali Raad Abdulkareem, Marwa Jabberi, Islem Jarraya, Tarek M. Hamdani, Khmaies Ouahada, Adel M. Alimi

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Although 3D face generation is extensively studied in computer vision, most existing methods prioritize reconstructing 3D geometry from available 2D or 3D inputs rather than generating novel faces directly from latent representations. To bridge this gap, we present the application of Adversarial Volumetric Convolutional Neural Networks (AVCNN), a tailored adaptation of the vanilla 3D Generative Adversarial Network (3D-GAN), to 3D face generation using latent space Gaussian embeddings. We first assemble a custom 3D facial dataset to provide the requisite facial characteristics and to ensure sufficient coverage of geometric variation across identities. The generator, implemented as a decoder, maps latent space …

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

In this work,\floatquery[-14pc]AU: Please provide ORCID ID for remaining authors. we study the solvability and stability of the fuzzy reaction-diffusion equation and the fuzzy diffusion equation with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. Firstly, we derive the fuzzy exact solutions by converting the nonhomogeneous boundary condition to a homogeneous condition, then we prove the instability of the solution by using simulation approach with the help of Maple program. From this, we have decided to implement the fuzzy backstepping approach to developed the stabilization of the fuzzy parabolic partial differential equations. By using this approach together with the generalized Hukuhara (gH) derivative, we were …

Investigating Teacher Perceptions Of Strategies That Led To Success Of Long-Term English Learners Passing English Assessment Exams, Whitney Hodges Dec 2025

Investigating Teacher Perceptions Of Strategies That Led To Success Of Long-Term English Learners Passing English Assessment Exams, Whitney Hodges

Ed.D. Dissertations

Long term English learners are those who have been enrolled in United States public schools for at least five to seven years yet have not exited language services via passing scores on language assessments. Those students have less opportunity to take preferred elective courses in middle and high school, and less opportunity to take higher level course work. This impacted the students, teachers, and instructional leaders when it came to scheduling, fulfilling graduation requirements, and meeting schoolwide and statewide growth and achievement goals. Previous researchers provided strategies for helping newcomers learn a language, and move from basic interpersonal communication skills …

Fedchae: Federated Learning With Client Clustering And Hybrid Adaptive Engagement, Chaeeun Park Dec 2025

Fedchae: Federated Learning With Client Clustering And Hybrid Adaptive Engagement, Chaeeun Park

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

As machine learning adoption expands, data privacy concerns have grown significantly. Federated Learning (FL) addresses this challenge by allowing clients to train locally and share only their model parameters with the server. However, conventional FL methods such as FedAvg suffer from high communication overhead, as all clients must participate in every global round.

This paper proposes FedChae (Federated Learning with Client Clustering and Hybrid Adaptive Engagement) to balance communication efficiency and model accuracy. FedChae alternates between Grouping Rounds, where all clients perform clustering, and Conventional Rounds, where one client per cluster updates the model.

Simulations with 100 clients using Multi-class …

Kakeya Sets Over The Heisenberg Group, Gabriel Jacob Gress Dec 2025

Kakeya Sets Over The Heisenberg Group, Gabriel Jacob Gress

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The Hausdorff dimension of Kakeya sets is an interesting problem where the two-dimensional case can be proven directly, but even obtaining bounds on the higher dimension analogues can require highly technical machinery. The difficulty of the general case has inspired analysts to look at Kakeya sets from non-Euclidean viewpoints.

In this paper, we explore a construction of the Kakeya set in the first Heisenberg group H^1. By utilizing the sub-Riemannian manifold of H^1 we can apply tools in geometric measure theory which at this time cannot be applied in R^3. We restate and provide a detailed proof for a sharp …

On Sharpest Tail Bounds For Functions Of Tail Bounded Random Variables, Stephen Harrison Dec 2025

On Sharpest Tail Bounds For Functions Of Tail Bounded Random Variables, Stephen Harrison

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Consider n real/complex, independent/dependent random variables with respective tail bounds and g a measurable function of the r.v.’s. Consider f the “sharpest” tail bound of g (sharpest in the sense, if f were any less, then for some X1, ..., Xn satisfying the conditions, g(X1, ..., Xn) would not satisfy the tail f). Significant research has been done to approximate f often with high accuracy. These results are often of the form, for g in this family, and tail bounds of Xk in this family, f is bounded by some f′ with high accuracy. However, the question “what would it …

From Public To Private: Understanding Parental Perceptions On Middle School Transitions, Joseph P. Peeden

Ed.D. Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore parents/guardians’ perceptions of their children’s transition from elementary to middle school, focusing on transitions to private middle schools and differences based on prior schooling (private versus public elementary) and gender. In this study, I addressed the lack of understanding regarding how private education transitions impacted students academically, socially, and culturally, including challenges related to social-emotional learning and cultural adjustment. I collected data from 75 parents/guardians using questionnaires and conducted 20 follow-up interviews in the Southeast United States to examine their experiences. I found that students transitioning from public schools to private …

Dense Temporary Array Investigation Of Jemez Uplift Seismicity, Jillian D. Podmore Dec 2025

Dense Temporary Array Investigation Of Jemez Uplift Seismicity, Jillian D. Podmore

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

A protracted multi-stage tectonic and magmatic evolution combined with low regional crustal strain rates make it challenging to characterize active structure that may host earthquakes in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. Here, we leverage temporary 1-month deployments of nodal seismometers to gain new insights into seismicity of the Jemez Mountains, which only have continuous seismic monitoring on their eastern flank as a result of the Los Alamos Seismic Network. Our catalog is built using 4 steps: phase picking in continuous seismic data, association of picks to detect unique events, event magnitude estimation, and absolute hypocenter estimation. We detect and …

Seismological Investigations Of Magmatic Systems Using Dense Nodal Arrays, Wenkai Song Dec 2025

Seismological Investigations Of Magmatic Systems Using Dense Nodal Arrays, Wenkai Song

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Understanding the internal architecture of magmatic systems is crucial for volcanology, yet conventional geophysical techniques often lack the resolution to image their fine-scale structures. This dissertation leverages unique datasets from dense nodal arrays to investigate the upper crustal magmatic systems beneath Yellowstone Caldera, Valles Caldera, and Mount St. Helens. At Yellowstone, I processed vibroseis data to delineate the top of the modern magma reservoir and evaluate the thermal connection between the magmatic and the overlying hydrothermal systems. At Valles, 3D radial seismic anisotropy imaging reveals strong positive radial anisotropy within the reservoir, indicating an organized structure of horizontally sill-like melt …

A Comprehensive Study Of Clique Graphs And Clique Regular Graphs, Connor Phillips Dec 2025

A Comprehensive Study Of Clique Graphs And Clique Regular Graphs, Connor Phillips

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

If Γ is a graph for which every edge is in exactly one clique of order ω, then one can form a new graph with vertex set equal to these cliques.  This is a generalization of the line graph of Γ.  We discover many general results and classifications related to these clique graphs that will be useful to researchers studying graphs with this property. In particular, we find bounds on the spectrum of Γ (with exact results when Γ is k-regular) and some complete classifications when Γ is strongly regular. We apply our results to derive novel information about the …

Contemporary Martian Geomorphic Processes And The Suitability Characterization Of Terrestrial Analogues, Daniel Paul Mason Dec 2025

Contemporary Martian Geomorphic Processes And The Suitability Characterization Of Terrestrial Analogues, Daniel Paul Mason

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Both historical and contemporary evidence for geomorphic activity on the surface of Mars is apparent. This evidence is showcased by features including a) well-preserved deltaic remnants in an otherwise cold and arid environment, present along the western flank of Jezero Crater, and b) the seasonal appearance of candidate recurring slope lineae throughout Martian equatorial, lower, and mid-latitudes as seen within both the Eos Chasma region and on the walls of Raga, Lohse, Rauna, and Tivat Craters. In this dissertation, I elucidate the role that geomorphic processes, whether aqueous or dry, have played in shaping both the ancient and contemporary Martian …

When Two Worlds Collide: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Teacher Identity Development Of Graduate Students Of Additional Languages, Hannah L. Garver Dec 2025

When Two Worlds Collide: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Teacher Identity Development Of Graduate Students Of Additional Languages, Hannah L. Garver

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This study explores a population that has been understudied in teacher identity research: native English-speaking graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) of additional languages who assumed this role with no prior teaching experience. Influenced by my own experience as a GTA, the purpose of this study is to gain insight into how this population’s experiences shape their identities as teachers and later careers. This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry as a method by which to examine their experiences through the stories told by participants: six former GTAs of French and German.

Using data in the form of semi-structured interviews and some participants’ …
