Structure Borne Noise Analysis Using Helmholtz Equation Least Squares Based Forced Vibro Acoustic Components, Logesh Kumar Natarajan
Structure Borne Noise Analysis Using Helmholtz Equation Least Squares Based Forced Vibro Acoustic Components, Logesh Kumar Natarajan
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation presents a structure-borne noise analysis technology that is focused on providing a cost-effective noise reduction strategy. Structure-borne sound is generated or transmitted through structural vibration; however, only a small portion of the vibration can effectively produce sound and radiate it to the far-field. Therefore, cost-effective noise reduction is reliant on identifying and suppressing the critical vibration components that are directly responsible for an undesired sound. However, current technologies cannot successfully identify these critical vibration components from the point of view of direct contribution to sound radiation and hence cannot guarantee the best cost-effective noise reduction.
The technology developed …
Financial Development And Health Capital Accumulation, Gunakar Bhatta
Financial Development And Health Capital Accumulation, Gunakar Bhatta
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation examines the interrelationship between financial development and health capital accumulation. While credit to GDP ratio, liquid liabilities to GDP ratio and market capitalization to GDP ratio are used as the proxies for financial development, health capital is represented by life expectancy, infant mortality and low birth weight. A simple static model in the utility maximization framework shows that financial development increases the medical care through income effect thus augmenting the health status. This is also supported by econometric analysis. Using various econometric models such as pooled OLS, fixed effect and instrumental variable approach, the study shows that higher …
A Phenomenological Study To Engage African-American Youth Voice In Deliberations Regarding Their Response To Schooling, Donna Michelle Coulter
A Phenomenological Study To Engage African-American Youth Voice In Deliberations Regarding Their Response To Schooling, Donna Michelle Coulter
Wayne State University Dissertations
To examine disparities in education, the researcher utilized a naturalistic approach to uncover how youth think, talk, and feel about their response to schooling. Findings are based on in-depth conversations with 12 inner city African-American kids enrolled in Urban, USA middle and high schools, rarely heard from in the scholarly literature. Students conveyed a belief system that schooling was the route to upward mobility, however, their responses to academic exercises seem to suggest an indifference. Primary findings suggest that students' (a) sense of safety and family tradition were key factors of student school selection; (b) understanding of how levels of …

Bridging The Divide: Second Language Teachers, Pedagogy, Content Knowledge, And Technology, Margo Fryling
Wayne State University Dissertations
Abstract
This study examines the use of technology, pedagogy and content knowledge with second language teachers, and comparing Title 1 and non Title 1 schools. Technology can be used to provide unique learning opportunities for second language learners. Second language students can benefit from technology by practicing skills, increasing motivation, providing authentic materials, creating interaction between students, teachers and peers, creating individual learning, encouraging global understanding and increasing communication in safe ways (Lai & Kritsonsis, 2006). Although technology shows promise for increasing second language student achievement, students continue to have varied access at home, perpetuating the digital divide that was …
Comparative Power Of The Anova, Randomization Anova, And Kruskal-Wallis Test, Jamie Gleason
Comparative Power Of The Anova, Randomization Anova, And Kruskal-Wallis Test, Jamie Gleason
Wayne State University Dissertations
The t test has been suggested to be robust to departures from normality as long as group sizes are equal and samples approach 30 or more. The F statistic has also been proposed to have the same robust qualities as the t, though researchers have suggested that because a test is robust to departures from normality, that does not necessarily make it the best test for every situation. With the increase in computing capabilities, the permutation ANOVA has been explored as an alternative to the ANOVA under non-normal conditions to rehabilitate the loss of statistical power. Since the permutation ANOVA …

Gifted programs in the United States under-represent African American (Black) children (Phi Delta Kappan, 1992). In 1993, African-American students were under-represented by 50% in gifted education, and 60% in 1998 (Grantham & Ford, 2003). Further, some speculate that gifted education programs are the most segregated educational programs in the nation (Ford, 1995). This proves especially true for Black gifted …
Visual Exploration And Information Analytics Of High-Dimensional Medical Images, Darshan Pai
Visual Exploration And Information Analytics Of High-Dimensional Medical Images, Darshan Pai
Wayne State University Dissertations
Data visualization has transformed how we analyze increasingly large and complex data sets. Advanced visual tools logically represent data in a way that communicates the most important information inherent within it and culminate the analysis with an insightful conclusion. Automated analysis disciplines - such as data mining, machine learning, and statistics - have traditionally been the most dominant fields for data analysis. It has been complemented with a near-ubiquitous adoption of specialized hardware and software environments that handle the storage, retrieval, and pre- and postprocessing of digital data. The addition of interactive visualization tools allows an active human participant in …
Acidic Pericellular Ph: Effects On Proteolysis And Gene Expression As Determined In 3d Models Of Breast Carcinoma, Jennifer M. Rothberg
Acidic Pericellular Ph: Effects On Proteolysis And Gene Expression As Determined In 3d Models Of Breast Carcinoma, Jennifer M. Rothberg
Wayne State University Dissertations
Among the non-cellular microenvironmental factors that contribute to malignancy of solid tumors is an acidic peritumoral pH. The first objective was to determine if an acidic extracellular pH observed in vivo (i.e., pHe 6.8) affects the activity of proteases, such as cathepsin B, that contribute to degradation of collagen IV by tumor cells when grown in biologically relevant three-dimensional cultures. At pHe 6.8 there were increases in pericellular active cysteine cathepsins and in degradation of DQ-collagen IV, which was partially blocked by a cathepsin B inhibitor. Imaging probes for active cysteine cathepsins localized to tumors in vivo. The amount of …
Combinatorial Auction-Based Virtual Machine Provisioning And Allocation In Clouds, Sharrukh Zaman
Combinatorial Auction-Based Virtual Machine Provisioning And Allocation In Clouds, Sharrukh Zaman
Wayne State University Dissertations
Current cloud providers use fixed-price based mechanisms to allocate Virtual Machine (VM) instances to their users. But economic theory states that when there are large amount of resources to be allocated to large number of users, auctions are the most efficient allocation mechanisms. Auctions achieve efficiency of allocation and also maximize the providers' revenue, which a fixed-price based mechanism is unable to do. We argue that combinatorial auctions are best suited for the problem of VM provisioning and allocation in clouds, since they provide the users with the most flexible way to express their requirements. In combinatorial auctions, users bid …

Fault Management For Service-Oriented Systems, Amal Alhosban
Wayne State University Dissertations
Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) enable the automatic creation of business applications from independently developed and deployed Web services. As Web services are inherently unreliable,
how to deliver reliable Web services composition over unreliable Web services is a significant and challenging problem. The process requires monitoring the system's behavior, determining when and why faults occur, and then applying fault prevention/recovery mechanisms to minimize the impact and/or recover from these faults. However, it is hard to apply a non-distributed management
approach to SOA, since a manager needs to communicate with the different components through authentications. In SOA, a business process can terminate …

Experimental Investigation And Development Of An Extended Two Color Method (Etcm) With Application To Internal Combustion Engines, Elena Florea
Wayne State University Dissertations
The internal combustion engine is on a continuous path of improvement to reduce exhaust gaseous emissions and improve fuel economy. While recent trends in diesel engine development have lowered the EGR requirements, future regulatory pressure will likely result in a reversed trend in the future.
Given this, it is of interest to improve the application range of diagnostic tools such as the two color method (TCM) typically used in evaluating the properties of engine soot, such as temperature and volume fraction. This optical diagnostic method relies on the use of the light emitted by the soot particles along with a …

Supporting Text Retrieval Query Formulation In Software Engineering, Sonia Cristina Haiduc
Wayne State University Dissertations
The text found in software artifacts captures important information. Text Retrieval (TR) techniques have been successfully used to leverage this information. Despite their advantages, the success of TR techniques strongly depends on the textual queries given as input. When poorly chosen queries are used, developers can waste time investigating irrelevant results.
The quality of a query indicates the relevance of the results returned by TR in response to the query and can give an indication if the results are worth investigating or a reformulation of the query should be sought instead. Knowing the quality of the query could lead to …

Aconitase, the second enzyme of the tricarboxylic acid cycle encoded by ACO1 in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, catalyzes the conversion of citrate to isocitrate. aco1 Delta results in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) instability. It has been proposed that Aco1 binds to mtDNA and mediates its maintenance. Here we propose an alternative mechanism to account for mtDNA loss in aco1 Delta mutant cells. We found that aco1 Delta activated the RTG pathway, resulting in increased expression of genes encoding citrate synthase. By deleting RTG1, RTG3, or genes encoding citrate synthase, mtDNA instability was prevented in aco1 Delta mutant …

The physiological response of vegetation to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) modifies productivity and surface energy and water fluxes. Quantifying this response is required for assessments of future climate change. Many global climate models account for this response; however, significant uncertainty remains in model simulations of this vegetation response and its impacts. Data from in situ field experiments provide evidence that previous modeling studies may have overestimated the increase in productivity at elevated [CO2], and the impact on large-scale water cycling is largely unknown. We parameterized the Agro-IBIS dynamic global vegetation model with observations from …

Drylands typically have distinctive vegetative patterns that reflect the underlying physical landscape. We use a geopedological classification to organize the landscape into five categories from broad scale to fine scale: (1) physiographic divisions which describe regional topography, such as mountains and basin floors; (2) regolith type which identifies residuum versus transported sediments; (3) parent materials which describe mineralogy; (4) landforms which provide meso-scale descriptions of topography; and (5) soil texture, a fine-scale variable important for infiltration, erodibility, and available water holding capacity. The study was conducted in a 1753 km2 area of the White Sands Missile Range and …

Mode-Division Multiplexed Transmission In Few-Mode Fibers, Neng Bai
Mode-Division Multiplexed Transmission In Few-Mode Fibers, Neng Bai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a promising candidate to break the single-mode fiber capacity limit, mode-division multiplexing (MDM) explores the spatial dimension to increase transmission capacity in fiberoptic communication. Two linear impairments, namely loss and multimode interference, present fundamental challenges to implementing MDM. In this dissertation, techniques to resolve these two issues are presented. To de-multiplex signals subject to multimode interference in MDM, Multiple-InputMultiple-Output (MIMO) processing using adaptive frequency-domain equalization (FDE) is proposed and investigated. Both simulations and experiments validate that FDE can reduce the algorithmic complexity significantly in comparison with the conventional time-domain equalization (TDE) while achieving similar performance as TDE. To further …
