Sensitivity Of Health Related Indices Is A Non-Decreasing Function Of Their Partitions, Fragiskos Bersimis, Demosthenes Panagiotakos, Malvina Vamvakari

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

This work aims to theoretically evaluate whether the number k of partitions of a discrete variable X affects the sensitivity Se(X) of a binary health outcome Y. The distribution of variable X was either unknown or the uniform. Thus, two discrete random variables Xk and Xk+1 with k and k+1 partitions, respectively, were considered. In addition, a random variable Y that indicates the actual health status of an individual was also considered. The case of the composite index Tkm which is formed by the sum of m variables Xk j , j = 1,2, . . . ,m either when …

Analyzing Skewed Data With The Epsilon Skew Gamma Distribution, Ebtisam Abdulah, Hassan Elsalloukh Nov 2013

Analyzing Skewed Data With The Epsilon Skew Gamma Distribution, Ebtisam Abdulah, Hassan Elsalloukh

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

A new distribution, the Epsilon Skew Gamma (ESG ) distribution, which was first introduced by Abdulah [1], is used on a near Gamma data. We first redefine the ESG distribution, its properties, and characteristics, and then we estimate its parameters using the maximum likelihood and moment estimators. We finally use these estimators to fit the data with the ESG distribution.

The Use Of Power Normalization As A New Trend In The Order Statistics Limit Theory, H. M. Barakat Nov 2013

The Use Of Power Normalization As A New Trend In The Order Statistics Limit Theory, H. M. Barakat

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In the last two decades E. Pancheva and her collaborators were investigating various limit theorems for extremes using a wider class of normalizing mapping than the linear ones to get a wider class of limit laws. This wider class of extreme limits can be used in solving approximation problems. This review and expository paper is about this new trend in the limit theory of order statistics. We focus on the use of the power normalizing mapping. The review is given covering the possible limit laws of extreme, central and intermediate order statistics under power normalization. The paper also traces the …

Analysis Of Inverse Weibull Distribution Based On Record Values, Muhammad Tayyab, Khudadad Khan, Azaz Ahmad Nov 2013

Analysis Of Inverse Weibull Distribution Based On Record Values, Muhammad Tayyab, Khudadad Khan, Azaz Ahmad

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In this research paper, the estimates of the parameters of InverseWeibull distribution (IWD) are obtained from lower record values by using Lloyd’s Method and Gupta’s Method. The comparisons between the performances of both the estimation methods, for location and scale parameters of IWD, have been made in terms of relative efficiency numerically and graphically. The study explored that relative efficiency of Gupta’s estimators for location and scale parameters of IWD increases as the value of shape parameter increases.

A Data-Based Method For Harmonising Heterogeneous Data Modelling Techniques Across Data Mining Applications, Kassim S. Mwitondi, Raed A. T. Said Nov 2013

A Data-Based Method For Harmonising Heterogeneous Data Modelling Techniques Across Data Mining Applications, Kassim S. Mwitondi, Raed A. T. Said

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

We propose an iterative graphical data visualisation algorithm for optimal model selection. The algorithm is implemented on three domain-partitioning techniques - decision trees, neural networks and support vector machines. Each model is trained and tested on the Pima Indians and Bupa Liver Disorders datasets with the performance being assessed in a multi-step process. Firstly, the conventional ROC curves and the Youden Indexare applied to determine the optimal model then sequential moving differences involving the fitted parameters - true and false positives – are extracted and their respective probability density estimations are used to track their variability using the proposed algorithm. …

A Ratiotype Estimator For The Estimation Of Population Variance Using Quartiles Of An Auxiliary Variable, Mursala Khan, Javid Shabbir Nov 2013

A Ratiotype Estimator For The Estimation Of Population Variance Using Quartiles Of An Auxiliary Variable, Mursala Khan, Javid Shabbir

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In this paper we have suggested aratio type estimator for the estimation of population variance of the study variable using quartiles and its functions as an auxiliary variable. The expression of bias and mean squared error of the proposed estimator is derived up to first order approximation. The proposed estimator is compared with the other existing estimators and its efficiency condition is carried out. An empirical study is carried out with the help of four natural populations to judge the merits of the suggested estimator over other existing estimators practically.

On Characterizations Of Exponential Distribution Through Order Statistics And Record Values With Random Shifts, M. Ahsanullah, Imtiyaz A. Shah, George P. Yanev

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Distributional relations of the form Y d= X +T where X, Y, and T are record values or order statistics and the random translator T is independent from X are considered. Characterizations of the exponential distribution when the ordered random variables are non-neighboring are proved. Corollaries for Pareto and power function distributions are also derived.

Mixed-Level Response Surface Designs Via A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm, P. Angelopoulos, C. Koukouvinos, D. E. Simos, A. Skountzou

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Response surface methodology is widely used for developing, improving and optimizing processes in various fields. In this paper, we present a general algorithmic method for constructing 2q14q2 mixed-level designs in order to explore and optimize response surfaces with respect to D-efficiency, where the predictor variables are at two and four equally spaced levels, by utilizing a hybrid genetic algorithm. Emphasis is given on various properties that arise from the implementation of the genetic algorithm, such as using genetic operators as local optimizers and the representation of the four levels of the design with a 2-bit Gray Code. We applied the …

Global Convergent Sequence For Solving Optimization Problems, Ike Basil Onukogu Nov 2013

Global Convergent Sequence For Solving Optimization Problems, Ike Basil Onukogu

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

The paper presents an effective, gradient-based procedure for locating the optimum for either constrained or unconstrained response surfaces. The procedure is widely applicable covering linear and curvilinear constraints as well as constraints with redundancy. Each move of the sequence is made by pooling information from all the support points in the feasible region, making the search a global one and convergence to the global optimum almost certain.

Characterization Of Exponential Distribution Through Equidistribution Conditions For Consecutive Maxima, Santanu Chakraborty, George P. Yanev

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

A characterization of the exponential distribution based on equidistribution conditions for maxima of random samples with consecutive sizes n−1 and n for an arbitrary and fixed n ≥ 3 is proved. This solves an open problem stated recently in Arnold and Villasenor [3].

Bayesian Inference And Prediction Using Progressive First-Failure Censored From Generalized Pareto Distribution, M. A. W. Mahmoud, Ahmed A. Soliman, Ahmed H. Abd-Ellah, Rashad M. El-Sagheer Nov 2013

Bayesian Inference And Prediction Using Progressive First-Failure Censored From Generalized Pareto Distribution, M. A. W. Mahmoud, Ahmed A. Soliman, Ahmed H. Abd-Ellah, Rashad M. El-Sagheer

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

This paper describes the Bayesian inference and prediction of the generalized Pareto (GP) distribution for progressive firstfailure censored data. We consider the Bayesian inference under a squared error loss function. We propose to apply Gibbs sampling procedure to drawMarkov ChianMonte Carlo (MCMC) samples, and they have in turn, been used to compute the Bayes estimates with the help of importance sampling technique. We have performed a simulation study in order to compare the proposed Bayes estimators with the maximum likelihood estimators. We further consider two sample Bayes prediction to predicting future order statistics and upper record values from generalized Pareto …

Semi-Markov Model Of A Series-Parallel System Subject To Preventive Maintenance, M. A. El-Damcese, A. N. Salem, N. S. Temraz

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

The purpose of this paper is to analyze a series-parallel system by using semi-Markov process. There is a preventive maintenance action provided to the system in order to increase the life time of the system. We suppose that the failure, repair, and maintenance times are stochastically independent random variables each having an arbitrary distribution. The kernel matrix associated with this system is constructed. Expressions for mean sojourn times, steady-state availability, availability function, reliability function, mean time to failure, and mean time to repair are presented. Numerical solutions of the system are obtained.

Limits On Violations Of Lorentz Symmetry From Gravity Probe B, Quentin G. Bailey, Ryan D. Everett, James M. Overduin Nov 2013

Limits On Violations Of Lorentz Symmetry From Gravity Probe B, Quentin G. Bailey, Ryan D. Everett, James M. Overduin

Physics & Astronomy - Prescott

Generic violations of Lorentz symmetry can be described by an effective field theory framework that contains both general relativity and the Standard Model of particle physics called the Standard-Model extension (SME). We obtain new constraints on the gravitational sector of the SME using recently published final results from Gravity Probe B. These include for the first time an upper limit at the 10_3 level on the time-time component of the new tensor field responsible for inducing local Lorentz violation in the theory, and an independent limit at the 10_7 level on a combination of components of this tensor field.

Seismic Slip Deficit In The Kashmir Himalaya From Gps Observations, Celia Schiffman, Bikram Singh Bali, Walter Szeliga, Roger Bilham Nov 2013

Seismic Slip Deficit In The Kashmir Himalaya From Gps Observations, Celia Schiffman, Bikram Singh Bali, Walter Szeliga, Roger Bilham

Faculty Scholarship for the Cascadia Hazards Institute

GPS measurements in Kashmir Himalaya reveal rangenormal convergence of 11±1 mm/yr with dextral shear of 5±1 mm/yr. The transition from a fully locked 170 km wide décollement to the unrestrained descending Indian plate occurs at ~25 km depth over an ~23 km wide transition zone. The convergence rate is consistent with the lower bounds of geological estimates for the Main Frontal Thrust, Riasi, and Balapora fault systems, on which no surface slip has been reported in the past millennium. Of the 14 damaging Kashmir earthquakes since 1123, none may have exceeded Mw = 7.6. Therefore, either a seismic moment …

Experiences Of Community College Vocational Students Who Were Required To Begin Their Studies By Taking Remedial Courses And Successfully Attained Their Associate’S Degrees: A Phenomenological Study, Amy Margaret Morrison Goings

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Great Recession and national skills gap crisis have reframed community college efforts to shift from access-based institutions to that of persistence and completion-focused colleges. Within the post-recession context, this research examines what success looks like for today’s vocational community college student, as well as the current research on the barriers to completion. This qualitative, phenomenological study will explore the experiences of community college students who are graduating with vocational degrees and how they overcame known barriers to complete their degrees. In addition to summarizing the responses to each of the sub-questions, three primary themes emerged from the research that …

A Sub-Kpc-Scale Binary Active Galactic Nucleus With Double Narrow-Line Regions, Jong-Hak Woo, Hojin Cho, Bernd Husemann, S. Komossa, Daeseong Park, Vardha N. Bennert

Physics

We present the kinematic properties of a type-2 Quasi stellar object (QSO), SDSS J132323.33−015941.9 at z ∼ 0.35, based on the analysis of Very Large Telescope integral field spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, which suggest that the target is a binary active galactic nucleus (AGN) with double narrow-line regions. The QSO features double-peaked emission lines ([O iii] and Hβ) which can be decomposed into two kinematic components. The flux-weighted centroids of the blue and red components are separated by ∼0.2 arcsec (0.8 kpc in projection) and coincide with the location of the two stellar cores detected …

Dos Detection In Ieee 802.11 With The Presence Of Hidden Nodes, Joseph Soryal, Xijie Liu, Tarek Saadawi

Publications and Research

The paper presents a novel technique to detect Denial of Service (DoS) attacks applied by misbehaving nodes in wireless networks with the presence of hidden nodes employing the widely used IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) protocols described in the IEEE standard [1]. Attacker nodes alter the IEEE 802.11 DCF firmware to illicitly capture the channel via elevating the probability of the average number of packets transmitted successfully using up the bandwidth share of the innocent nodes that follow the protocol standards. We obtained the theoretical network throughput by solving two-dimensional Markov Chain model as described by Bianchi [2], and …

Stable Isotope And Modelling Evidence For Co2 As A Driver Of Glacial-Interglacial Vegetation Shifts In Southern Africa, F. J. Bragg, I. C. Prentice, S. P. Harrison, G. Eglinton, P. N. Foster Nov 2013

Stable Isotope And Modelling Evidence For Co2 As A Driver Of Glacial-Interglacial Vegetation Shifts In Southern Africa, F. J. Bragg, I. C. Prentice, S. P. Harrison, G. Eglinton, P. N. Foster

Dartmouth Scholarship

Atmospheric CO2 concentration is hypothesized to influence vegetation distribution via tree-grass competition, with higher CO2 concentrations favouring trees. The stable carbon isotope (delta C-13) signature of vegetation is influenced by the relative importance of C-4 plants (including most tropical grasses) and C-3 plants (including nearly all trees), and the degree of stomatal closure - a response to aridity in C-3 plants. Compound-specific delta C-13 analyses of leaf-wax biomarkers in sediment cores of an offshore South Atlantic transect are used here as a record of vegetation changes in subequatorial Africa. These data suggest a large increase in C3 relative to C4 …
