Teachers' Perceptions Of Actions To Achieve Equity And Access To Excellence In A Large School District, Sidney Moss
Teachers' Perceptions Of Actions To Achieve Equity And Access To Excellence In A Large School District, Sidney Moss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed-method, descriptive study was to determine the teachers' perceptions who were employed in the target school district from 2003 to 2011, regarding school district second-order change leadership decisions, events, and challenges, and the extent to which equity and access to excellence for all students were achieved. Also investigated was the relationship, if any, that existed in achieving equity and access to excellence based on school district second-order change leadership from 2003 to 2011. Teacher perception data were analyzed from a survey presented to teachers in over 16 schools who had been consecutively employed in the target …
Photophysical And Photochemical Factors Affecting Multi-Photon Direct Laser Writing Using The Cross-Linkable Epoxide Su-8, Henry Williams
Photophysical And Photochemical Factors Affecting Multi-Photon Direct Laser Writing Using The Cross-Linkable Epoxide Su-8, Henry Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For the past decade, the epoxy based photoresist SU-8 has been used commercially and in the lab for fabricating micro- and nano-structures. Investigators have studied how processing parameters such as pre- and post-exposure bake temperatures affect the resolution and quality of SU-8 structures patterned using ultraviolet or x-ray lithography. Despite the advances in understanding the phenomena, not all of them have been explored, especially those that are specific to multi-photon direct laser writing (mpDLW). Unlike conventional exposure techniques, mpDLW is an inherently three-dimensional (3D) process that is activated by nonlinear absorption of light. This dissertation reports how several key processing …
Planar Organic Photovoltaic Devices, Feras Alzubi
Planar Organic Photovoltaic Devices, Feras Alzubi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Organic Photovoltaic devices (OPV) are considered to be attractive candidates for clean and renewable energy source because of their potential for low cost of fabrication, easy processing, and their mechanical flexibility. The device efficiency of OPV cells are limited by several factors. Among them are: (i) donor-acceptor interface, (ii) morphology of the materials, (iii) electrode-organic semiconductor (OSC) interface and (iv) device architecture such as active material thickness and electrode separation. Although, the donor-acceptor interface has been studied in detail, the commonly prevalent vertical OPV device structure does not allow a good understanding of the other key issues as the vertical …
Secondary And Postsecondary Calculus Instructors' Expectations Of Student Knowledge Of Functions: A Multiple-Case Study, Cheryl Avila
Secondary And Postsecondary Calculus Instructors' Expectations Of Student Knowledge Of Functions: A Multiple-Case Study, Cheryl Avila
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This multiple-case study examines the explicit and implicit assumptions of six veteran calculus instructors from three types of educational institutions, comparing and contrasting their views on the iteration of conceptual understanding and procedural fluency of pre-calculus topics. There were three components to the research data recording process. The first component was a written survey, the second component was a "think-aloud" activity of the instructors analyzing the results of a function diagnostic instrument administered to a calculus class, and for the third component, the instructors responded to two quotations. As a result of this activity, themes were found between and among …

The Inclusion Of Women's History In The Secondary Social Studies Classroom, Cicely Scheiner-Fisher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The author examined the motivation for why, and methods of how, some secondary social studies teachers incorporate women’s voices into the traditional history framework. A multi-layered qualitative methodology was employed for this study using survey, case study, and phenomenological approaches, including interviews and classroom observations of participants. The researcher discovered the percentage of teachers who claim to incorporate women’s history/perspectives into their lessons; how teachers incorporate women’s history/perspectives into their lessons; and, the factors that contribute to teachers including women’s history/perspectives into their classes.
Chemometric Applications To A Complex Classification Problem: Forensic Fire Debris Analysis, Erin Waddell
Chemometric Applications To A Complex Classification Problem: Forensic Fire Debris Analysis, Erin Waddell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fire debris analysis currently relies on visual pattern recognition of the total ion chromatograms, extracted ion profiles, and target compound chromatograms to identify the presence of an ignitable liquid. This procedure is described in the ASTM International E1618-10 standard method. For large data sets, this methodology can be time consuming and is a subjective method, the accuracy of which is dependent upon the skill and experience of the analyst. This research aimed to develop an automated classification method for large data sets and investigated the use of the total ion spectrum (TIS). The TIS is calculated by taking an average …
On The Capillary Electrophoresis Of Monohydroxy Metabolites Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Its Application To The Analysis Of Biological Matrices, Gaston Knobel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are a class of environmental pollutants consisting of a minimum of two fused aromatics rings originating from the incomplete combustion of organic matter and/or anthropogenic sources. Numerous possible anthropogenic and natural sources make the presence of PAH ubiquitous in the environment. The carcinogenic nature of some PAH and their ubiquitous presence makes their chemical analysis a topic of environmental and toxicological importance. Although environmental monitoring of PAH is an important step to prevent exposure to contaminated sites, it provides little information on the actual uptake and subsequent risks. Parent PAH are relatively inert and need metabolic …

Electrical, Optical And Chemical Properties Of Organic Photo Sensitve Materials, Zheng Shi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Light as a “green” source of energy has become increasingly attractive throughout the past century and has shown versatility for the application of activating chemical reactions. Compared with traditional energy sources, it provides a more direct, selective and controllable method. My PhD study was focused on the study of photochemistry of organic materials in two different systems. The first system is regarding reversible photoacids which generate protons on irradiation. With the aim of systematically studying these novel types of long lived photoacids, a series of photoacids was designed, synthesized and whose chemical mechanism was thoroughly investigated. This type of photoacid …
Mesoscale Light-Matter Interactions, Kyle Douglass
Mesoscale Light-Matter Interactions, Kyle Douglass
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mesoscale optical phenomena occur when light interacts with a number of different types of materials, such as biological and chemical systems and fabricated nanostructures. As a framework, mesoscale optics unifies the interpretations of the interaction of light with complex media when the outcome depends significantly upon the scale of the interaction. Most importantly, it guides the process of designing an optical sensing technique by focusing on the nature and amount of information that can be extracted from a measurement. Different aspects of mesoscale optics are addressed in this dissertation which led to the solution of a number of problems in …
Fabrication Of Metallic Antenna Arrays Using Nanoimprint Lithography, Yu-Wei Lin
Fabrication Of Metallic Antenna Arrays Using Nanoimprint Lithography, Yu-Wei Lin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This Thesis describes the development of a cost-effective process for patterning nanoscale metal antenna arrays. Soft ultraviolet (UV) Nanoimprint Lithography (NIL) into bilayer resist was chosen since it enables repeatable large-scale replication of nanoscale patterns with good lift-off properties using a simple low-cost process. Nanofabrication often involves the use of Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) which enables the definition of nanoscale patterns on small sample regions, typically < 1 mm 2 . However its sequential nature makes the large scale production of nanostructured substrates using EBL cost-prohibitive. NIL is a pattern replication method that can reproduce nanoscale patterns in a parallel fashion, allowing the low-cost and rapid production of a large number of nanopatterned samples based on a single nanostructured master mold. Standard NIL replicates patterns by pressing a nanostructured hard mold into a soft resist layer on a substrate resulting in exposed substrate regions, followed by an optional Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) step and the subsequent deposition of e.g. metal onto the exposed substrate area. However, non-vertical sidewalls of the features in the resist layer resulting from an imperfect hard mold, from reflow of the resist layer, or from isotropic etching in the RIE step iii may cause imperfect lift-off. To overcome this problem, a bilayer resist method can be used. Using stacked resist layers with different etch rates, undercut structures can be obtained after the RIE step, allowing for easy lift-off even when using a mold with non-vertical sidewalls. Experiments were carried out using a nanostructured negative SiO2 master mold. Various material combinations and processing methods were explored. The negative master mold was transferred to a positive soft mold, leaving the original master mold unaltered. The soft mold consisted of a 5 m thick top Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), or Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) layer, a 1.5 mm thick Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) buffer layer, and a glass supporting substrate. The soft mold was pressed into a bilayer of 300 nm PMMA and 350 nm of silicon based UV-curable resist that was spin-coated onto a glass slide, and cured using UV radiation. The imprinted patterns were etched using RIE, exposing the substrate, followed by metal deposition and lift-off. The experiments show that the use of soft molds enables successful pattern transfer even in the presence of small dust particles between the mold and the resist layer. Feature sizes down to 280 nm were replicated successfully
Development Of Novel Redox Sensors And Processes Towards Biological Applications, Jigna Patel
Development Of Novel Redox Sensors And Processes Towards Biological Applications, Jigna Patel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research on the cure and early detection of diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's is becoming of great interest due to the increasing number of people affected by them every year. An accurate and quick detection of various damaging species is highly critical in treatments of such diseases not only for exploring possible cures but also for early detection. If these diseases are detected during the initial stages than the possibility of curing them is much higher. Motivated by this, many researchers today have developed numerous types of sensing devices that can detect various physiological and biological compounds. However, …
Volume Phase Masks In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Marc Segall
Volume Phase Masks In Photo-Thermo-Refractive Glass, Marc Segall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In many applications such as beam shaping, mode conversion, and phase encoding it is necessary to alter the spatial phase profile of a beam via a phase mask. Conventional techniques to accomplish this either involve surface relief profiling in thin films such as PMMA or refractive index modulation in bulk photorefractive crystals such as lithium niobate. These materials have been used extensively for the past several decades and perform admirably in low power conditions. However, in high power systems these materials will be destroyed, requiring a new means of producing phase masks. In this dissertation a method for producing robust …
Partially Integrable Pt-Symmetric Hierarchies Of Some Canonical Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, Keri Pecora
Partially Integrable Pt-Symmetric Hierarchies Of Some Canonical Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, Keri Pecora
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we generalize the work of Bender and co-workers to derive new partially-integrable hierarchies of various PT -symmetric, nonlinear partial differential equations. The possible integrable members are identified employing the Painlev´e Test, a necessary but not sufficient integrability condition, and are indexed by the integer n, corresponding to the negative of the order of the dominant pole in the singular part of the Painlev´e expansion for the solution. For the PT -symmetric Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, as with some other hierarchies, the first or n = 1 equation fails the test, the n = 2 member corresponds to …
Novel Optical Properties Of Metal Nanostructures Based On Surface Plasmons, Haining Wang
Novel Optical Properties Of Metal Nanostructures Based On Surface Plasmons, Haining Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Surface plasmons have been attracted extensive interests in recent decades due to the novel properties in nanometer sized dimensions. My work focused on the novel optical properties of metal nanostructures based on surface plasmons using theoretical simulation methods. In the first part, we investigated metal nanofilms and nanorods and demonstrated that extremely low scattering efficiency, high absorption efficiency and propagation with long distance could be obtained by different metal nanostructures. With a perforated silver film, we demonstrated that an extremely low scattering cross section with an efficiency of less than 1% can be achieved at tunable wavelengths with tunable widths. …

Phase-Locking Stability Of A Quasi-Single-Cycle Pulse, Nathan Bodnar
Phase-Locking Stability Of A Quasi-Single-Cycle Pulse, Nathan Bodnar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is increasing interest in the generation of very short laser pulses, even down to attosecond (10-18 s) durations. Laser systems with femtosecond pulse durations are needed for these applications. For many of these applications, positioning of the maximum electric field within the pulse envelope can affect the outcome. The peak of the electric field relative to the peak of the pulse is called the Carrier Envelope Phase (CEP). Controlling the position of the electric field becomes more important when pulse duration approaches single-cycle. This thesis focuses on the stabilization of a quasi-single-cycle laser facility. Improvements to this already-established laser …

Field Theoretic Lagrangian From Off-Shell Supermultiplet Gauge Quotients, Gregory Katona
Field Theoretic Lagrangian From Off-Shell Supermultiplet Gauge Quotients, Gregory Katona
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent efforts to classify off-shell representations of supersymmetry without a central charge have focused upon directed, supermultiplet graphs of hypercubic topology known as Adinkras. These encodings of Super Poincare algebras, depict every generator of a chosen supersymmetry as a node-pair transformtion between fermionic bosonic component fields. This research thesis is a culmination of investigating novel diagrammatic sums of gauge-quotients by supersymmetric images of other Adinkras, and the correlated building of field theoretic worldline Lagrangians to accommodate both classical and quantum venues. We find Ref [40], that such gauge quotients do not yield other stand alone or "proper" Adinkras as afore …

Local Pt Invariance And Supersymmetric Parametric Oscillators, Ramy El-Ganainy, Konstantinos G. Makris, Demetrios N. Christodoulides
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We introduce the concept of local parity-time symmetric (PT) invariance in optical waveguides (or cavity) structures. Starting from a Lagrangian formalism, we establish the connection between light dynamics in these configurations and the seemingly different physics of "supersymmetric" parametric oscillators. Using this powerful tool, we present analytical solutions for optical beam propagation in local PT-invariant coupled systems and we show that the intensity tunneling between the two channels critically depends on the initial conditions. For unbalanced inputs, symmetric as well as asymmetric power evolution can be observed depending on the excitation channel. On the other hand, under certain physical conditions, …

It has been determined that not one method works for all types of curriculum, for example methods that have been found to work effectively in curriculum that teaches procedures …
Biochemical Characterization Of The Nifb Enzyme And Nifb-Cofactor, Jirair Gevorkyan
Biochemical Characterization Of The Nifb Enzyme And Nifb-Cofactor, Jirair Gevorkyan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Mo-nitrogenase complex is composed of two components, Fe-protein and MoFe-protein. This complex is able to catalyze the reduction of N2 through the MgATP dependent transfer of electrons from the Fe-protein Fe4S4 cluster to the MoFe-protein P-cluster and, subsequently, to the iron-molybdenum cofactor (FeMoco). FeMo-co is a Fe7S9MoC-(R)-homocitrate cluster and has two biosynthetic precursors, NifB-co and L-cluster, of unknown structure and composition. The biosynthesis of FeMo-co is an enigmatic process that minimally requires NifB, NifEN, Fe-protein, MoO4 2- , (R)-homocitrate and S-adenolsylmethionine. A means to isolate the NifB enzyme for characterization has been developed through use of a GST-fusion tag. …

Respresentation Of Hispanic Students In High Incidence Categories In Exceptional Student Education Programs And Educational Environments In K-12 Schools Across The State Of Florida, Douglas Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was first passed in 1975 and requires states to have policies in place to prevent misidentification and overrepresentation, and to monitor disproportionate representation by race/ethnicity and disability category. The fundamental premise of this legislation is to ensure that students with disabilities are afforded a free and appropriate education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE). Even with the passage of IDEA, the disproportionate representation of minority students continues to be a national issue. The disproportionate placement of minority students in Exceptional Student Education (ESE) began to receive attention prior to IDEA and has …

Predicting Fracture Density In The Eagle Ford (Boquillas) Formation, Val Verde Basin, Texas, Sean Kimiagar
Predicting Fracture Density In The Eagle Ford (Boquillas) Formation, Val Verde Basin, Texas, Sean Kimiagar
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Fracture density in hydrocarbon reservoirs is an important variable for efficient production of oil and gas in tight reservoirs. Fracture density is the fracture surface area per unit of volume, and the higher the reservoir fracture density, the higher its recovery factor. Being able to estimate the induced fracture density in advance of hydraulic fracturing will therefore help increase the knowledge of the reservoir and production efficiency. Theoretical considerations indicate that fracture density is related to strain energy. The purpose of this study is to verify the hypothesis that fracture density can be predicted under constant strain conditions using the …
