Stereotypes, Perceptions Of Similarity, And Cultural Identity: Factors That May Influence The Academic Achievement Of Immigrant Students., Tamara Fagan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For decades, the United States has been known as the nation of immigrants due to the increasing number of immigrant students in the public school system. Although the population of immigrant students steadily increases annually, American society still pressures immigrants into acculturation to fulfill the United States ideals of academic achievement despite the United States claim of multiculturalism (Malcolm & Lowery, 2011). This research focuses on 1st - and 2nd generation immigrant students’ strife of acceptance in U.S. culture, while sill preserving their own native culture, and the influence it has on academic achievement. The researcher interviewed eight (8) adult …

Too Few Voices, Too Many Distractions, Too Little Concern, Too Little Understanding: The American Media During The Rwandan Genocide Of 1994, Skip-Thomas Parrish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Upwards of one million people died during the Genocide, Civil War, and Refugee Crisis in Rwanda and surrounding nations, during one of the fastest Genocides to occur in modern history. Even though the United Nations and its member states had a legal mandate to intervene in cases of Genocide due to the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, the world chose not to. While there were a myriad of reasons for this the media played a part in this situation. Using the coverage of US print magazine articles, this thesis argues that the media missed the …

Resilient Women, Metistic Scientists: A Multiple Case Study Of How Women Negotiate Their Situatedness In Science Fields, Isidore Kafui Dorpenyo

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The concept of feminist metistic resilience postulates that the voiceless, the marginalized and the minority in societies employ strategies in order to turn tables in their favor. This study presents a qualitative analysis of how women, considered to be the minority, negotiate their situatedness in science fields in order to effect change in their lives or that of the society and why they become successful. By “situatedness,” I refer to the everyday life of women as they live and encounter people, society and culture, especially, the life of women who have transcended the culturally stipulated role of women and are …

Technology, Transportation, And Scale In The Koyokuk Placer Mining District 1890s - 1930s, Jessica Sarah Peterson Jan 2013

Technology, Transportation, And Scale In The Koyokuk Placer Mining District 1890s - 1930s, Jessica Sarah Peterson

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The Koyukuk Mining District was one of several northern, turn of the century, gold rush regions. Miners focused their efforts in this region on the Middle Fork of the Koyukuk River and on several of its tributaries. Mining in the Koyukuk began in the 1880s and the first rush occurred in 1898. Continued mining throughout the early decades of the 1900s has resulted in an historic mining landscape consisting of structures, equipment, mining shafts, waste rock, trash scatters, and prospect pits. Modern work continues in the region alongside these historic resources. An archaeological survey was completed in 2012 as part …

The Planned And The Emergent: An Alternative Model Of Learning And Literacy, Lori S. Rogers Jan 2013

The Planned And The Emergent: An Alternative Model Of Learning And Literacy, Lori S. Rogers

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Within academic institutions, writing centers are uniquely situated, socially rich sites for exploring learning and literacy. I examine the work of the Michigan Tech Writing Center's UN 1002 World Cultures study teams primarily because student participants and Writing Center coaches are actively engaged in structuring their own learning and meaning-making processes. My research reveals that learning is closely linked to identity formation and leading the teams is an important component of the coaches' educational experiences. I argue that supporting this type of learning requires an expanded understanding of literacy and significant changes to how learning environments are conceptualized and developed. …

Publishing Japan: A Visual Observation Of English-Language Publications Related To Japanese Studies¹, Tai Wei Lim

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper studies English-language publications related to the subject of Japanese Studies through visual observation and collection of brochures on display at a major field conference—the combined Association of Asian Studies (AAS) and International Convention on Asian Studies (ICAS) conferences in Hawaii from 30 March 2011 to 3 April 2011. While there are existing studies especially in English-language trade magazines on general developments in the publishing industry related to Japanese Studies, case studies examining book offerings in field-specific major conferences are comparatively fewer. In carrying out the observation studies for this paper, I had three goals in mind. First, I …

The Religious And Cultural Background Of Joseph Smith Papyrus I, Kerry Muhlestein Jan 2013

The Religious And Cultural Background Of Joseph Smith Papyrus I, Kerry Muhlestein

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Throughout its history, ancient Egyptian religion showed a remarkable capacity for adopting new religious ideas and characters and adapting them for use in an already existing system of worship. This process continued, and perhaps accelerated, during the Groco-Roman era of Egyptian history. Egyptian priests readily used foreign religious characters in their rituals and religious formulas, particularly from Greek and Jewish religions. Religious texts demonstrate that Egyptian priests knew of both biblical and nonbiblical accounts of many Jewish figures--especially Jehova, Abraham, and Moses--by about 200 BC. Knowing this religio-cultural background helps us understand how the priest in Thebes who owned Joseph …

Council, Chaos, And Creation In The Book Of Abraham, Stephen O. Smoot Jan 2013

Council, Chaos, And Creation In The Book Of Abraham, Stephen O. Smoot

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The Book of Abraham in the Pearl of Great Price depicts the creation, including the motifs of the divine council, primeval chaos, and creation from preexisting matter. This depiction fits nicely in an ancient Near Eastern cultural background and has strong affinities with the depiction of the cosmos found in the Hebrew Bible and other ancient Near Eastern texts (especially Egyptian and Mesopotamian).

The Cultural Tapestry Of Mesoamerica, Mark Alan Wright Jan 2013

The Cultural Tapestry Of Mesoamerica, Mark Alan Wright

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica was populated by scores of distinctive cultural groups. Such groups are identified archaeologically by their stylistically unique material cultures, from small, portable ceramic objects to large-scale monumental architecture, as well as through distinctive artistic, religious, and linguistic evidence. Significant interaction took place between these distinctive peoples and cultures, and some major metropolitan areas were home to different ethnic groups. This paper offers a brief glimpse at some of the cultures that inhabited the major geographical regions of Mesoamerica throughout its threethousand-year history and explores the cultural diversity that existed within and between regions.

A Bacterial Foraging Optimization Approach For Tuning Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Controller, Mohammad Kiani, Seyed Mohammad Ali Mohammadi, Ali Akbar Gharaveisi Jan 2013

A Bacterial Foraging Optimization Approach For Tuning Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Controller, Mohammad Kiani, Seyed Mohammad Ali Mohammadi, Ali Akbar Gharaveisi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The type-1 fuzzy sets theory was proposed to handle uncertainty in control systems, but some cases showed some liabilities of type-1 fuzzy sets when faced with unpredictable disturbance and uncertainties. Therefore, type-2 fuzzy sets were introduced and extended while providing more degrees of freedom in designing criteria. The most important specification of type-2 fuzzy sets is the interval between a superior membership function and an inferior membership function, which is called the footprint of uncertainty. This paper presents a bacterial foraging optimization approach for optimizing the parameterized membership function. The above criterion is applied to an automatic voltage regulator system …

A New Multiobjective Fuzzy Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm For Optimal Reconfiguration Of Radial Distribution Systems In The Presence Of Reactive Power Compensators, Hossein Dehghan Dehnavi, Saeid Esmaeili Jan 2013

A New Multiobjective Fuzzy Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm For Optimal Reconfiguration Of Radial Distribution Systems In The Presence Of Reactive Power Compensators, Hossein Dehghan Dehnavi, Saeid Esmaeili

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new approach for the optimal reconfiguration of radial distribution systems in the presence of reactive power compensators (RPCs). The proposed method is based on the simultaneous reconfiguration and RPC allocation for the mitigation of losses, equalizing the feeder load balancing as well as improving the voltage profile in power distribution networks. In this paper, the compensators are the capacitor bank and distribution static compensator, which is a type of distribution flexible alternating current transmission system device representative of conventional and modern RPCs. In this regard, the optimal states of the distribution system tie switches are determined …

Cancer Risk Analysis By Fuzzy Logic Approach And Performance Status Of The Model, Atinç Yilmaz, Kürşat Ayan Jan 2013

Cancer Risk Analysis By Fuzzy Logic Approach And Performance Status Of The Model, Atinç Yilmaz, Kürşat Ayan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Cancer is the leading life-threatening disease for people in today's world. Although cancer formation is different for each type of cancer, it has been determined by studies and research that stress also triggers cancer types. Early precaution is very important for people who have not fallen ill yet with a disease like cancer that has a high mortality rate and expensive treatment. With this study, we expound that the possibility of developing such disease may be decreased and people could take measures against it. For the 3 cancer types selected as pilot work by introducing a fuzzy logic model, the …

Originalism And The Unwritten Constitution, Lawrence B. Solum Jan 2013

Originalism And The Unwritten Constitution, Lawrence B. Solum

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In his book, America’s Unwritten Constitution, Akhil Reed Amar contends that to properly engage the written Constitution, scholars and laymen alike must look to extratextual sources: among them America’s founding documents, institutional practices, and ethos, all of which constitute Amar’s “unwritten Constitution.” In this article, the author argues that contemporary originalist constitutional theory is consistent with reliance on extraconstitutional sources in certain circumstances. He establishes a framework for revaluating the use of extratextual sources. That framework categorizes extratextual sources and explains their relevance to constitutional interpretation (the meaning of the text) and constitutional construction (elaboration of constitutional doctrine and …

Throughout the developing world, countries face a number of issues regarding the health and welfare of their populations. One issue that stands out with critical and growing importance is the availability-and accessibility-of water. Across the Sahel, access to potable water for domestic use, as well as contaminant-free water for agricultural and animal husbandry purposes is of growing concern. This study evaluates Government of Senegal efforts at improving rural water access through public-private operation contracts to manage deep groundwater resources. In West Africa, Senegal currently counts itself among the few Sahelian countries having sufficient freshwater supplies to support its population’s growing …

Originalism And Constitutional Construction, Lawrence B. Solum Jan 2013

Originalism And Constitutional Construction, Lawrence B. Solum

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Constitutional interpretation is the activity that discovers the communicative content or linguistic meaning of the constitutional text. Constitutional construction is the activity that determines the legal effect given the text, including doctrines of constitutional law and decisions of constitutional cases or issues by judges and other officials. The interpretation-construction distinction, frequently invoked by contemporary constitutional theorists and rooted in American legal theory in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, marks the difference between these two activities.

This article advances two central claims about constitutional construction. First, constitutional construction is ubiquitous in constitutional practice. The central warrant for this claim is conceptual: …

Modern Multivariate Methods For Accurate Dialect Classification, Ernest Fokoue, Zichen Ma Jan 2013

Modern Multivariate Methods For Accurate Dialect Classification, Ernest Fokoue, Zichen Ma

Articles

We perform discriminant analysis together with principal component analysis on dialect and accent recognition. Since the data matrix exhibits high dimension low sample size feature, we calculate the principal components and the score matrix based on the dual space. Given the transformed score matrix, linear discriminant model does not fit the data well, while quadratic discriminant model, the superior model comparing to LDA, may fail sometimes when large number of principal components are required. Using the Gaussian radial basis function kernel, we calculate the kernel matrix and perform LDA directly on it. Comparing the LDA-PCA method, the in-sample prediction error …

Hits And Misses In Teaching Russian In The Us: The Perspectives Of Instructors, Students, And Enrollment, Ludmila Isurin Jan 2013

Hits And Misses In Teaching Russian In The Us: The Perspectives Of Instructors, Students, And Enrollment, Ludmila Isurin

Russian Language Journal

In U.S. universities, interest in learning Russian as a foreign language has been relatively steady over the last 50 years. The so-called “Sputnik effect”―a surge of interest in the Russian language due to the launch of the first Soviet sputnik in 1957 and, as a result, the shocking revelation that the USSR might become a serious rival―is considered the beginning of a new era, during which Russian language programs were established at major American universities. The interest in learning Russian did not subside during Gorbachev’s Perestroika in the mid-1980s; neither did it weaken right after the collapse of the USSR …
