Authority And Personality In M.M. Bakhtin's "Author And Hero In Aesthetic Activity", Joel Scott Ward Jan 2013

Authority And Personality In M.M. Bakhtin's "Author And Hero In Aesthetic Activity", Joel Scott Ward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

M.M. Bakhtin's fundamental claim in his seminal essay "Author and Hero in Aesthetic Activity" situates verbal action as the most essential constituent of human personality. A careful reading of this text reveals important truths about the relationship between free individual personhood and the nature of the speech utterance. Bakhtin connects the human experience of speech to the life and person of Jesus Christ emphasizing the incarnation and the Trinitarian view of God as essential principles for understanding the creative power of the word and consequent liabilities. Bakhtin develops these theological and philosophical coordinates around a discussion of the author-hero relationship …

Professional Conversations About Race, Culture And Language In Early Childhood Literacy Education: An Administrator's Journey, Sabina Maria Mosso-Taylor Jan 2013

Professional Conversations About Race, Culture And Language In Early Childhood Literacy Education: An Administrator's Journey, Sabina Maria Mosso-Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Year after year, children of Color, speakers of languages other than English, and children of poverty are served less well in public schools then their White, middle-class peers. The lives of children from White, middle-class homes are regularly normalized as they are described by teachers, administrators, policy makers, and educational programs as those with the most worth and knowledge. In all too many settings, cultures and languages outside this narrowly-defined norm are perceived from deficit perspectives. This hierarchy perpetuates a status quo that privileges and therefore supports the success of some, while devaluing and contributing to the failure of others. …

Contextual Factors, Bilingualism And English Language Learning Among A Group Of Primary School Pupils In Nigeria, Nkechi M.Christopher Jan 2013

Contextual Factors, Bilingualism And English Language Learning Among A Group Of Primary School Pupils In Nigeria, Nkechi M.Christopher

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Contextual factors impinge directly and indirectly on second language learning through its influence on attitudes towards, and motivation to learn, a language among learners of a target language. This paper describes language learning situation, bilingual behaviour and academic performance of some primary school pupils. It suggests that learners’ independent use of digital and literacy activities could be harnessed for multimodal teaching where digital learning facilities have not been provided by the school. The researcher believes that such inclusion would encourage autonomous and collaborative learning among students; empowering learners to take responsibility for their own language learning – an attitude toward …

ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS TEND TO QUESTION, PUSH, CHALLENGE, take risks—as part of the pure pleasure of making. These are things you’re expected to do, just as you’re expected to think outside the box, color outside the lines, question the rules, defy expectations. The freedom of thought art and design offer may be what has inspired people to make objects of beauty and wonder since well before we began writing and recording our own history. Yet, as liberating as it sounds, that freedom is also a challenge. As alums you know how to probe and ponder, and deliberately work with materials …

Increasing The Cultural Competence Of Assessment Professionals Via Online Training, Jennifer L. Schroeder, Maximino Plata, Harry Fullwood, Melanie Price, Jennifer Dyer

Faculty Publications

The preponderance of literature suggests that culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners demonstrate unexpected underachievement in academic areas, mainly due to educators’ inability to differentiate between students’ cultural attributes rather than demonstrable cognitive dysfunction. Thirty assessment practitioners participated in a study to investigate the effectiveness of teaching cultural information and culturally-relevant assessment practices via an online teaching platform. The Munroe Multicultural Attitude Scale Questionnaire (MASQUE) and short-answer tests were used to obtain participants’ pre- and post- training attitudes and knowledge regarding cultural diversity. Results indicated that online training improved attitudes toward multicultural issues in education. A number of suggestions for …

Current Approaches In Chemical Ecology Using Regionally Adapted Sustainable Methods, Eva Winter Jan 2013

Current Approaches In Chemical Ecology Using Regionally Adapted Sustainable Methods, Eva Winter

All Master’s Theses

Kenya is an African developing country situated at the equator ranking 157th of 177 countries in the human development index. Agriculture is next to tourism the most important economic sector with 24 % of the GDP. Poverty prevalence is highest with small holder farmers. A promissing approach to reduce this precarious condition is the implementation of organic agriculture. 1. Establishment of certified organic cash crop production for a domestic and/or an export market and 2. dissemination of common methods in organic agriculture to subsistently living small holder farmers are the two major strategies of the approach. Both have different positive …

Fixing Copyright In Characters: Literary Perspectives On A Legal Problem, Zahr K. Said Jan 2013

Fixing Copyright In Characters: Literary Perspectives On A Legal Problem, Zahr K. Said

Articles

This Article argues for the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of copyright’s internal inconsistencies. Character jurisprudence under copyright law misaligns with cultural and literary conceptions of character. Intellectual property law has taken insufficient account of important discrepancies among legal, cultural, and literary theories of character. Literature helps articulate what is at work in the doctrinal tensions in copyright’s character jurisprudence over which kind of character, if any, to protect independently, and how much of it, if any, to protect separately from the text.

At the heart of the doctrinal confusion over the proper scope of protection for …

Argumentation Among Family Members In Italy And Switzerland: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Francesco Arcidiacono, Antonio Bova Jan 2013

Argumentation Among Family Members In Italy And Switzerland: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Francesco Arcidiacono, Antonio Bova

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The main goal of this study is to analyze to what extent family members engage to resolve differences of opinion during everyday interactions at home. Our aim is to point out the importance of the context in the analytical reconstruction of argumentation carried out by parents and children at dinnertime. Trough the examination of everyday interactions, we analyze qualitatively how argumentation shapes the communicative practices of Italian and Swiss family members and how it can foster a critical attitude in their processes of decision-making. We integrate two theoretical and methodological approaches: the first one is the model of the critical …

Lessons From A Plague, Max D. Siegel Jan 2013

Lessons From A Plague, Max D. Siegel

Student Articles and Papers

This Article argues that we ought to examine this country’s early AIDS crisis for lessons on addressing HIV in the twenty-first century and to improve the ongoing social movement of sexual minorities in the United States. In the 1980s and early 1990s, AIDS focused sexual minorities’ advocacy efforts as both liberationists working to deregulate sexuality and integrationists seeking entrance to heterosexual privilege recognized that their agendas needed to account for this new crisis. Over time, a liberationist response to AIDS emerged and dominated the social movement because sexual minorities needed to publicly defend their differences in order to stay alive. …

American Dreams, Trafficking Nightmares, Mariana C. Minaya

Student Articles and Papers

Under the H-2 visa scheme, American employers rely on labor recruiters to venture abroad, find prospective employees, and commit them to an employment contract for seasonal or temporary work on American farms, construction sites, hotel staffs, and other businesses. Rogue recruiters, operating in foreign countries far from the view of their American employers or law enforcement, are in effect free to employ a variety of unscrupulous means for enticing and obtaining prospective recruits. They may lie about the nature of the work that awaits the recruits in the United States, charge them illegal fees that leave them in crushing debt, …

“It’S A Kākou Thing”: The Dadt Repeal And A New Vocabulary Of Anti-Subordination, 3 U.C. Irvine L. Rev. 905 (2013), Kim D. Chanbonpin

UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship

The repeal of DADT represents the triumph of non-discrimination rhetoric, while the MLDC's report stands for a renewed effort to expand the military's affirmative action policies for the benefit of people of color and women: two historically subordinated groups in the U.S. military. The repeal of DADT may have purchased equality for LGB service members, but at a premium. The strategic decision to rally around the non-discrimination model, I argue in this Article, will reinforce the continued subordination of LGB service members. As an alternative, I propose the application of kakou principles to military policies and programs for integrating LGB …

Orisa Tradtion, Catholicism, And The Construction Of Black Identity In 19th Century Brazil And Cuba, Allison Sellers Jan 2013

Orisa Tradtion, Catholicism, And The Construction Of Black Identity In 19th Century Brazil And Cuba, Allison Sellers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis compares the role of the hybridized religious traditions Candomblé and Santería in the construction of identity for people of color in Brazil and Cuba in the 19th century. In particular, it focuses on the development of these traditions within Catholic confraternities and contrasts the use of ethnic and religious categories within them to define “African-ness” and “blackness” as Brazil and Cuba transitioned from slaveholding colonies to pos t-abolition nationstates. This comparison is illustrated through the examination of each colony’s slave trade and the nature of slavery as it was practiced within them; the analysis of the structure of …

Heavy Metals In Traditionally Used Fruits Among The Lakota, Joanita M. Kant Jan 2013

Heavy Metals In Traditionally Used Fruits Among The Lakota, Joanita M. Kant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heavy metals concentrations in soils and plants on and near Pine Ridge Reservation (PRR), SD, are a cause of concern to Oglala Lakota tribal government, particularly because of current and past uranium mining nearby, as well as familiarity with occasional selenium poisoning in livestock. In this study, concentrations of As, Ba, Pb, Se, and U were determined using ICP-OES for selected traditionally edible berries and small fruits, and the soils in which they grow. Results indicated that the heavy metals are likely of natural origin, and ingestion of these culturally important fruits at levels reported in interviews among the Lakota …

The Impact Of Canadian Social Discourses On L2 Writing Pedagogy In Ontario, Amir Kalan Jan 2013

The Impact Of Canadian Social Discourses On L2 Writing Pedagogy In Ontario, Amir Kalan

English Faculty Publications

This paper attempts to illustrate the impact of Canadian social, political, and academic discourses on second language writing pedagogy in Ontario schools. Building upon the views that regard teacher knowledge as teachers’ sociocultural interactions and lived experiences, and not merely intellectual capabilities gained within teacher preparation, this article proposes that the impact of dominant social discourses on classroom practice might be more profound than teachers’ creativity and initiative. This idea is demonstrated by examining the findings of a grounded theory study of frequently employed strategies that can deal with intercultural rhetoric in EAL (English as an additional language) academic writing. …

La Restauration Rapide: An Affront To The Collective Cultural Memory Of French Cuisine, Amye Sukapdjo Jan 2013

La Restauration Rapide: An Affront To The Collective Cultural Memory Of French Cuisine, Amye Sukapdjo

The Coastal Review

A collective cultural memory is established through the evolving interactions and interpretations that a group has with socially contextualized knowledge and experiences. Three elements are necessary: shared history, shared values, and shared language. The cultural construct of French cuisine has been central to its national identity since the early nineteenth century. Yet it has experienced an “assault” from a differing model of production and consumption calledla restauration rapide. How has France’s patrimoine culinaire (re-)interpreted this assault in its collective cultural memory? Reactions include a forged culinary (anti-)identity and a (re-)appropriation of the most offending foodstuff – the hamburger.

Cultural Impacts On Saudi Students At A Mid-Western American University, Nasser Razek, Sandra C. Coyner Jan 2013

Cultural Impacts On Saudi Students At A Mid-Western American University, Nasser Razek, Sandra C. Coyner

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

The number of Saudi students studying in the United States quintupled from 3,035 students in 2005 to 15,810 students in 2010 due to a fully funded Saudi government scholarship (Open Doors, 2010). As students originating in a cultural background differing from the prevailing principles of their higher education institutions, Saudi students face several challenges. The cultural challenges are one of the most frequently apparent among these challenges (Constantine, Okazaki, & Utsey, 2004; Miller, 2002). Building upon the relationship between the cultural beliefs and student academic achievement, this study aimed at examining the cultural aspects of the increased presence of Saudi …

Constitutional Fracticality: Structure And Coherence In The Nation’S Supreme Law, Daniel M. Braun Jan 2013

Constitutional Fracticality: Structure And Coherence In The Nation’S Supreme Law, Daniel M. Braun

Saint Louis University Public Law Review

Yale mathematician, Benoît B. Mandelbrot, revolutionized the way in which we view and understand the natural world. Where earlier visionaries were only able to see mathematical “monsters,” Mandelbrot was able to discern nature’s geometric masterpiece. This dramatic breakthrough allowed him to identify and comprehend patterns and shapes that no one had previously understood and led him to develop the field of fractal geometry. Similar patterns, this article contends, are deeply embedded in the U.S. Constitution, and the metaphor of fractals, therefore, enables us to significantly bolster our understanding of the nation’s supreme law. This article, thus, develops the fractal theory …
