Stalin’S Boots And The March Of History (Post-Communist Memories), Roland K. Végső Jan 2013

Stalin’S Boots And The March Of History (Post-Communist Memories), Roland K. Végső

Department of English: Faculty Publications

I would like to propose here is precisely the invention of a relation to history and the public sphere of sociality that deconstructs the trauma/nostalgia opposition. The theoretical goal is to separate concrete narrative forms from actual political contents. It follows from the previous point that it might be possible to conceive of historical moments or concrete rhetorical situations in which we need to rely on nostalgic rather than traumatic narratives in order to imagine progressive political change. In these situations, the political task could be the development of a certain “critical nostalgia” that does not try to replace trauma …

Fraudulent Corporate Signals: Conduct As Securities Fraud, Manuel A. Utset Jan 2013

Fraudulent Corporate Signals: Conduct As Securities Fraud, Manuel A. Utset

Scholarly Publications

Paying a dividend, repurchasing shares, underpricing an initial public offering, pledging collateral, and borrowing using short-term, instead of long-term debt, are all forms of corporate communications. They are “corporate signals” that tell investors certain things about a company’s operations and current financial position, and about the managers’ confidence in its future performance. This Article provides the first comprehensive analysis of the relationship between corporate signals and securities fraud. The incentive to communicate using corporate signals has increased in recent years, a phenomenon that, I argue, is due to the grow-ing complexity of public corporations, and, importantly, to a number of …

Socio-Economic Influences On The Party Affiliation Of Hispanic Voters, Angelo Montagner Jan 2013

Socio-Economic Influences On The Party Affiliation Of Hispanic Voters, Angelo Montagner

HIM 1990-2015

Voting analysts in the United States have attempted to predict political orientation based on race, gender, occupation, educational achievement, and economic background. Yet, the substantial amount of research available on these factors has been directed toward the understanding of the white-majority vote. Now, as a result of the overwhelming growth of ethnic minority populations scholars are beginning to look at the potential decisive role of ethnic minority voters. Part of this newly formed voting bloc consists of Hispanics which are now one of the fastest and largest racial minority groups in the United States. This thesis aims to understand the …

A Familial Privacy Right Over Death Images: Critiquing The Internet-Propelled Emergence Of A Nascent Constitutional Right That Preserves Happy Memories And Emotions, Clay Calvert Jan 2013

A Familial Privacy Right Over Death Images: Critiquing The Internet-Propelled Emergence Of A Nascent Constitutional Right That Preserves Happy Memories And Emotions, Clay Calvert

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In May 2012, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit broke new constitutional ground in Marsh v. County of San Diego when it held that the constitutional right to privacy encompasses "the power to control images of a dead family member." This article provides an overview of Marsh. It then discusses the historical common law right to familial privacy over death images. In addition, it explores both judicial and legislative recognition of the Internet's power as a force in the battle to preserve privacy. Next, it illustrates how these twin forces-the preexisting common law right to familial …

Shamanic Cosmology As An Evolutionary Neurocognitive Epistemology, Michael Winkelman Jan 2013

Shamanic Cosmology As An Evolutionary Neurocognitive Epistemology, Michael Winkelman

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The biological foundation for a shamanic epistemology is indicated by the cross-cultural distribution of a shamanic cosmology derived from knowledge obtained during altered consciousness. These special forms of consciousness involve integrative brain conditions that access ancient ways of knowing, expressive systems which have evolutionary roots in the communicative and social processes involved in animal displays or rituals. These were augmented over the course of hominid evolution into expressive and mimetic activities that provided a basis for significant epistemological expansions of consciousness exemplified in shamanic out-of-body (OBE) experiences. These manifestations of consciousness involved new modes of self and processes of knowing, …

Antonio Gramsci: Life And Impact On Critical Pedagogy, Arturo Rodriguez, Matthew David Smith Jan 2013

Antonio Gramsci: Life And Impact On Critical Pedagogy, Arturo Rodriguez, Matthew David Smith

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Antonio Gramsci was born in the province of Cagliarli, Sardinia on 22 January 1891. One of seven children, his formative years was spent roaming the hills of Sardinia. Antonio's political understanding was heavily influenced by the Socialism of his brother Gennaro and the imprisonment of his father, Francesco, from 1898-1904. Francesco's imprisonment caused Antonio to curtail his formal education and take up employment. This continued for several years until Francesco was released, allowing young Antonio to return to formal studies.

A Comparison Of Food Inspection Practices Of The U.S. Air Force And Ohio Local Public Health, Danny R. Pizzino, Karen A.N. Rupp

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Objective: As Americans consume more meals outside the home, food safety of restaurants is more critical. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of food service establishment (FSE) inspection frequency on FSE performance. In this study, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) public health system is compared to Ohio local public health departments (Ohio LPHDs). The USAF inspects FSEs more frequently than Ohio LPHDs do. The goal is to determine if this increased frequency leads to higher food safety in the FSEs.

Methods: We reviewed 1482 reports from three USAF bases and 1909 reports from six Ohio LPHDs …

The Effectiveness Of Virtual Learning Tools For Millennial Generation Students In A Community College Criminal Justice Degree Program, Lawrence Snyder Jan 2013

The Effectiveness Of Virtual Learning Tools For Millennial Generation Students In A Community College Criminal Justice Degree Program, Lawrence Snyder

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

An analysis of data from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement and multiyear analysis of pretest/posttest scores in introductory criminal justice courses revealed there was a systemic decline in student engagement and achievement. Because of this analysis, a commercial virtual learning tool (CJI) that purported great success in improving student engagement and performance was identified and implemented on the college's course management application in the spring of 2010. CJI, a comprehensive learning tool that incorporated Web 2.0 activities, such as video, simulations, and study aids, was designed to improve student engagement and performance. The inclusion of Web 2.0 activities …

Online Deception Detection Using Bdi Agents, Richard Alan Merritts Jan 2013

Online Deception Detection Using Bdi Agents, Richard Alan Merritts

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

This research has two facets within separate research areas. The research area of Belief, Desire and Intention (BDI) agent capability development was extended. Deception detection research has been advanced with the development of automation using BDI agents. BDI agents performed tasks automatically and autonomously. This study used these characteristics to automate deception detection with limited intervention of human users. This was a useful research area resulting in a capability general enough to have practical application by private individuals, investigators, organizations and others. The need for this research is grounded in the fact that humans are not very effective at detecting …

Emerging In The Image Of God: From Evolution To Ethics In A Second Naïveté Understanding Of Christian Anthropology, Jason Paul Roberts Jan 2013

Emerging In The Image Of God: From Evolution To Ethics In A Second Naïveté Understanding Of Christian Anthropology, Jason Paul Roberts

Dissertations (1934 -)

Through a careful integration of theological, philosophical, and the natural scientific sources, the biblical concepts of the image of God and the knowledge of good and evil have the potential to remain important and appropriate descriptors of the human condition, including the possibility and necessity of human morality. This study employs French philosopher Paul Ricoeur's notion of "second naïveté" understanding to demonstrate the hermeneutical significance of contemporary biocultural evolutionary theory for reinterpreting and reappropriating these ancient symbols of Christian anthropology as terms equipped to encapsulate a morally fruitful and intellectually honest conceptual framework for constructing, conducting, and evaluating theological anthropology …

Dialogue In The Margins, Cheryl Hogue Smith, Nicole Callahan

Publications and Research

This article demonstrates how, through our conversations about holding dialogues in the margins of student papers, we realized that there can sometimes be an advantage to moving students into the margins, where their marginalia constitute a productive and active dialogue about their own thinking.

The Book Of Mormon: A Biography, Paul C. Gutjahr, Tod R. Harris Jan 2013

The Book Of Mormon: A Biography, Paul C. Gutjahr, Tod R. Harris

BYU Studies

There is something of a paradox prevalent in academic religious studies: in order to consider a community and its traditions objectively, one should not be a member of that community; yet the only way to understand fully and appreciate and therefore faithfully report about the community is to be a member. Many times this contradiction leads to the unfortunate situation where "outsiders" do not report their findings objectively or accurately and thus disappoint those hoping for fair and informative treatment, and where the work of members attempting serious scholarly analysis of their own community is viewed with suspicion and distrust …

The Trinity In The Old Testament, Jiri Moskala Jan 2013

The Trinity In The Old Testament, Jiri Moskala

Faculty Publications

The fundamental mystery of the Christian faith is belief in the Triune God. As Seventh‑day Adventists, we confess that God is One but manifested in three distinct persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. When we speak about God, we need to remember that weenter holy ground, and we need to do it with deep humility, knowing our limits. We are using imperfect human language to describe an infinite God. The transcendent God always surpasses even our finest categories of thinking and logic.

Immigration Stories And The Construction Of A Bilingual American Identity, Camden Bowman Jan 2013

Immigration Stories And The Construction Of A Bilingual American Identity, Camden Bowman

Honors Theses

This project seeks to document first-generation, Spanish-speaking Americans' immigration stories by transcribing and translating their oral accounts from Spanish to English, in an attempt to increase understanding between Anglophone and Spanish-speaking populations. The project envisions immigration stories as the basis for a distinct American folklore, at the same time connecting Americans to their ethnic or national roots and distinguishing them from their ancestors, giving them a unique American identity. With this sort of nationalizing "myth" in mind, the project seeks to create a record of first-generation permanent Americans, painiting a picture of the beginnings of a new Spanish-speaking U.S. identity.

Understanding Expressive Writing, Lindsay C. Dever Jan 2013

Understanding Expressive Writing, Lindsay C. Dever

Honors Theses

Expressing trauma, specifically through expressive writing, leads to better health, both physically and psychologically. Specifically, the relationship between expressive writing and higher rates of affective (emotional) word use can be explained by reappraisal, a technique that reduces stress through better understanding. Reappraisal is thus related to resilience, and both are correlated with secure attachment. Secure attachment, in turn, is best folstered by authoritative parenting. Because of this research we predicted that there would be a positive relationship between resilience, language use, and authoritative parenting. In this study, 100 college-aged participants reported perceived parenting style and resilience. We randomly assigned participants …

The impact of structure on mission effectivenessis evaluated in the present work by looking for patterns in history in which the structure has been either a facilitator or a hindrance for establishing churches among those who have not been reached with the …

The Institutional-Professoriate Tension: Scholarship Identity And Academic Alignment That Impact Scholars' Productivity And Well-Being, Milagros Pereyra-Rojas Jan 2013

The Institutional-Professoriate Tension: Scholarship Identity And Academic Alignment That Impact Scholars' Productivity And Well-Being, Milagros Pereyra-Rojas

Student Scholarship

Scholars and institutions alike are concerned with academic productivity. Scholars not only further knowledge in their professional fields, they also bring visibility and prestige to themselves and their institutions, which in turn attracts research grants and more qualified faculty and graduate students. Many studies have been done on scholar productivity; however, most of them focus on individual factors such as gender, marital status, and psychological characteristics rather than intrinsic academic factors such as scholars' academic values, institutional expectations and academic alignment between the scholar and the institution. In this study, we developed measures for the different kinds of scholarship based …

Because of the method(s) of communication in a particular class, gender and cultural differences can lead to a different mix of voluntary communication in the online or blended class setting from that of a traditional classroom. Given the hybrid nature of courses taught by the School of Infor-mation at the University of South Florida, a comparison can be made among the same students in class using different methods of class communication. Comparisons between graduate, under-graduate and student-athletes in School of Information courses can also be made. This paper ex-amines the differences experienced by students of varying cultural backgrounds in their …

Exploring Intelligence And Interpersonal Communication: An Analysis Of Intellectual Perceptions In A Real Dating Arena, Andrew Dix

Iowa Journal of Communication

The present study examined the relationship between perceptions of intelligence and interpersonal communication in a courtship setting. Participants engaged in speed-dating as a means to quantitatively assess whether evaluations of a dating partner would change from pre-test to post-test. Findings indicated positive messages caused participants to see a potential romantic partner as more intelligent. In contrast, negative communication resulted in unfavorable evaluations of dater intelligence. Study data focused on participant matches revealed women were significantly more selective than men in terms of second-date selection. The findings can be applied to various communicative contexts including employment interviewing and casual dating. Future …
