Taiwanese Language Medical School Curriculum: A Case Study Of Symbolic Resistance Through The Promotion Of Alternative Literacy And Language Domain Norms, Philip John Sweeney
Taiwanese Language Medical School Curriculum: A Case Study Of Symbolic Resistance Through The Promotion Of Alternative Literacy And Language Domain Norms, Philip John Sweeney
Dissertations and Theses
In contemporary Taiwan, Mandarin language proficiency and literacy in Han characters are not only key skills needed for success in academic institutions and employment markets, but they also carry meaning as symbolic markers of national and supranational Chinese identity. This study examines how Taiwanese-language medical studies curriculum planners are promoting alternative linguistic practices as a means of resisting the influence of Chinese nationalism in Taiwan and striving to replace it with a rival Taiwanese nationalism. I conducted research for this study during the 2010-2011 school year in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. I collected data for this study by engaging in participant observation …

Today, for the kaqchikel maya of the Guatemalan Highlands, the word k'u'x has gained great importance. Generally translated as "corazon" k'u'x has a strong sense or viral force. In the community under study, k'u'x has its expression in three significant ways: focusing on life and sensibility, as a placenta and as the creator-sustaining deity. Among its multiple aspects it shows a spiritual character interlacing with the physical dimensions of human life. The purpose of this paper is to approach co an integral understanding of k'u'x, taking in regard its position in several domains of Mayan experience. I present the fundamental …

Towards A Borgean Theory Of Constitutional Interpretation, Marco Jimenez
Towards A Borgean Theory Of Constitutional Interpretation, Marco Jimenez
Pepperdine Law Review
This Article presents a reworking of Jorge Luis Borges’ short story, Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote, as applied to the U.S. Constitution. In Borges’ original story, which deals with important issues governing interpretation, the creation of meaning, and the ascertainment of original intent, Borges’ fictional scholar, Pierre Menard, undertakes to translate Cervantes’ Don Quixote for a modern audience by creating a Quixote that could have been written by Cervantes today. To do so, Menard begins by immersing himself in the world of 17th century Spain, much as an originalist today might immerse him or herself in 18th century America, …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Their Values, Sources Of The Values, And Its Influence On Student Personality Development: A Case Study From Pakistan, Sharifullah Baig, Zeenat Shah
Teachers' Perceptions Of Their Values, Sources Of The Values, And Its Influence On Student Personality Development: A Case Study From Pakistan, Sharifullah Baig, Zeenat Shah
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This study explores the perceptions and level of awareness of teachers’ personal values and their influence on the valuation processes of their students in the specific social and cultural context of Pakistan. Within the qualitative paradigm, this study employed the deeply-structured, self-reflection process involving six teachers from three different school sites. The research participants highlighted the morality and ethics, role-modeling, affection and empathy, nation-building, and professional competency as their articulated values. Among these values, almost all of the participants regarded morality and ethics as the most prominent of the teachers. Alternatively, the more experienced teachers in this study were more …

Examining The Effects Of Variation In Emotional Tone Of Voice On Spoken Word Recognition, Maura L. Krestar, Conor T. Mclennan
Psychology Faculty Publications
Emotional tone of voice (ETV) is essential for optimal verbal communication. Research has found that the impact of variation in nonlinguistic features of speech on spoken word recognition differs according to a time course. In the current study, we investigated whether intratalker variation in ETV follows the same time course in two long-term repetition priming experiments. We found that intratalker variability in ETVs affected reaction times to spoken words only when processing was relatively slow and difficult, not when processing was relatively fast and easy. These results provide evidence for the use of both abstract and episodic lexical representations for …

The research reported here is extracted from a larger study aimed at describing the challenges and barriers to implementing the two way immersion (TWI) program at Stark Elementary School (a pseudonym). While Stark’s TWI program is used as the backdrop for the current discussion the perspective taken here is to examine the actions (and lack of action in some instances) of Stark’s administrators and describe how those actions impacted other stakeholders and led to challenges during the implementation process. The findings illuminate the need for leaders to gain support for proposed changes while maintaining dialogue with stakeholders and developing other …

The Role Of Teacher Commitment And Burnout In Predicting Outcomes Of Preschoolers With Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Multilevel Structural Equation Approach, Drew Carson Coman
The Role Of Teacher Commitment And Burnout In Predicting Outcomes Of Preschoolers With Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Multilevel Structural Equation Approach, Drew Carson Coman
Open Access Dissertations
The recent economic downturn and political climate within the federal government has threatened special education resources for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The literature suggests that one consequence may be teacher burnout; a syndrome shown to have detrimental effects on the educational outcomes of students. The aims of this study were to investigate burnout in three groups (i.e., TEACCH, LEAP, and HQSEP) of high fidelity preschool teachers, its associations with teacher commitment to philosophy, and the potential effects on the social and communicative functioning in preschoolers with ASD. A sample of 75 teachers and 198 students were investigated within …

Pragmatic Skill Differences In Second Born Children And Those Without Siblings, Crystal Toombs
Pragmatic Skill Differences In Second Born Children And Those Without Siblings, Crystal Toombs
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study compared the pragmatic skills possessed by second born children to those of children without siblings. Participants for this investigation were 56 fourth-grade children. Participants were identified through questionnaires distributed through area public schools. Based on the information obtained from the parent completed questionnaires, participants were assigned to one of two groups, depending on the presence of siblings. The classroom teachers of each participant then completed a Pragmatic Language Skills Inventory (PLSI), an instrument used to rate pragmatic skills exhibited by children, as they compared to other children of the same age and gender. The data obtained from the …

The Role Of Comparative Analysis In Borderlands Studies, Christine Brenner
The Role Of Comparative Analysis In Borderlands Studies, Christine Brenner
Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series
The paper explores the question, “What global core competencies can public administration glean from the field of borderlands studies?” Borderlands studies have traditionally focused on the geographic area on or near the frontier demarcation between nation states. Borderlands also function as buffering or mediating zones where often markedly different countries develop complex networked administrative systems to permit the passage of peoples and products across territorial boundaries. In this way borderlands often shape the administrative and policy decisions made in the centers of national power. This paper employs content analysis to review ten years of the Journal of Borderlands Studies (2011 …

Investigating The Portrait Values Questionnaire At Two Transitions In Adulthood: Retirement And University, Andrew Burr, Jonathan Santo, Dolores Pushkar
Psychology Faculty Publications
In this study, two issues regarding the use of the Portrait Value Questionnaire (PVQ; Schwartz et al.: J. Cross. Cult. Psychol. 32:519–542, 2001) with older adults were addressed:(1)whetherthequasi-circumplexstructureofvalues,developedonyoungeradult samples, also emerges among older adults; and (2) whether the PVQ demonstrates measurement invariance across age groups and equivalence over time. The 40-item version of the PVQ was completed by 433 retired adults and 173 university students in Montreal, Canada. In both retired and student samples, the quasi-circumplex structure of values emerged using exploratory techniques, but was not supported by constrained confirmatory factor analyses. A modified 26-item model was necessary to achieve …
