The Nashville John School : Risk Deterrence And The Reintegrative Shaming Approach., Robin Malony Valenzuela
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Contemporary anti-prostitution campaigns focus on curtailing “the demand” by punishing sexual service consumers. One component of this approach is a diversion program, or “john school,” offered to those who are caught buying prostitution. This ethnography focuses upon the Nashville John School (NJS), which consists of informational presentations that educate johns about the risks associated with prostitution. By employing a restorative justice approach, the NJS exemplifies elements of John Braithwaite’s “reintegrative shaming” theory (1989), which seeks to hold offenders accountable for their wrongdoing while avoiding stigmatization. This ethnographic study utilizes participant observation in the NJS, as well as individual interviews with …

The Bureaucratic Savior: How Human Service Professionals Allocate Rights To Noncitizens, Mary Pheng
The Bureaucratic Savior: How Human Service Professionals Allocate Rights To Noncitizens, Mary Pheng
Sociology Honors Projects
Lacking civil and political rights, over 30 million noncitizens in the United States hold de facto citizenship through the accumulation of social rights. Although governments confer rights, the United States relies on non-profit human service organizations to deliver many social support services. As the primary institution that interacts with noncitizens, human service organizations not only make policy in practice, but also play a key role in determining who gets to stay and who should receive help in doing so. This arrangement poses important questions: How do human services interact with pressures from immigration and welfare regulation? How does the institutional …

The Long-Term Costs Of Caring: How Caring For An Aging Parent Impacts Wealth Trajectories Of Caregivers, Jennifer Crane Greenfield
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Long-term care in the U.S. is a growing concern as our aging population exerts pressure on formal and informal care systems. Public expenditures on formal care are increasing rapidly, even as reliance on informal caregivers expands. Recent policy innovations are shifting Medicaid and Medicare funding toward home- and community-based services: HCBS) as an alternative to nursing home care. Not only can caregiving have negative impacts on the physical and mental health of caregivers, but …
