Application Of Support Vector Machine In Predicting The Market's Monthly Trend Direction, Ali Alali Dec 2013

Application Of Support Vector Machine In Predicting The Market's Monthly Trend Direction, Ali Alali

Dissertations and Theses

In this work, we investigate different techniques to predict the monthly trend direction of the S&P 500 market index. The techniques use a machine learning classifier with technical and macroeconomic indicators as input features. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier was explored in-depth in order to optimize the performance using four different kernels; Linear, Radial Basis Function (RBF), Polynomial, and Quadratic. A result found was the performance of the classifier can be optimized by reducing the number of macroeconomic features needed by 30% using Sequential Feature Selection. Further performance enhancement was achieved by optimizing the RBF kernel and SVM parameters …

Evidence And Implications Of Weight Clustering Among Adolescents, Jennifer C. Acker Dec 2013

Evidence And Implications Of Weight Clustering Among Adolescents, Jennifer C. Acker

Master's Theses

Both obesity and eating disorders (ED) are increasingly conceptualized from an ecological model of health, which emphasizes the importance of individual and contextual variables. The peer context is particularly important for understanding adolescents’ weight related attitudes and behaviors; however, specific peer processes that impact obesity and EDs are unclear. Because social comparison is common during adolescence, how teens view their body in comparison to the body size of their close friends may be influential. The purpose of this study is to examine how adolescents’ perceptions of their friends’ body sizes relate to their weight-related cognitions, behaviors, and mental health symptoms, …

Thermal, Economic And Environmental Analysis Of Domestic Solar Water Heaters In Malaysia / Fayaz Hussain, Fayaz Hussain Dec 2013

Thermal, Economic And Environmental Analysis Of Domestic Solar Water Heaters In Malaysia / Fayaz Hussain, Fayaz Hussain

Student Works (2010-2019)

Solar thermal utilization, especially the application of solar water heater technology, has developed rapidly in recent decades. Solar water heating systems are practical applications to replace the use of electrical water heaters. But the performance of these systems depends on weather and exhibit a nonlinear dependence. This makes it difficult to accurately analyze their performance by simply observing their response to short-term or average weather conditions. The purpose of this project is to show solar potential through contour mapping and do thermal, economic and environmental analysis of evacuated-tube, glazed and unglazed collector solar water heaters. The optimum performance of solar …

A "Time-Conscious" Christmas Carol, Jack Lundquist Dec 2013

A "Time-Conscious" Christmas Carol, Jack Lundquist

Theses and Dissertations

Shortly after Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol was released in 1843, a tradition of adaptation began which has continued seemingly unabated to the present day. Consequently, the tale has become so widely known that one is arguably as likely to have first encountered the iconic miser Scrooge through any number of audio-visual adaptations as through the original work itself. Significant critical attention has been paid to the nature of Scrooge's drastic change from miser to philanthropist. Many would argue that the change, happening both literally and figuratively overnight, is not representative of a genuine psychological transformation. On Christmas day, 2010, …

Eight different conditions were tested with combinations of greeting messages, tones of voice, and rewards offered. Significant differences were found in favor of using an eager greeting message and aggressive tone of voice. A vigilant greeting message and an aggressive tone of voice produced the greatest number of hang ups. A significant difference was found between offering a reward or not in the pitch for seniors but not for adults. Results provide support for using the peripheral …

Examination Of The Effect Of Different Training Metrics On Performance Of A Minimally Invasive Surgery Transfer Task, Cristofer Madera Dec 2013

Examination Of The Effect Of Different Training Metrics On Performance Of A Minimally Invasive Surgery Transfer Task, Cristofer Madera

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if there existed techniques to more efficiently train prospective surgeons the skills necessary to capably perform minimally invasive surgical procedures. Also, we wanted to know if trainees could be pushed to cognitively define a laparoscopic environment with a novel hand-eye relationship. To explore these questions, a simulation was setup wherein subjects would perform a laparoscopic transfer task and receive active feedback during training. Different subjects would receive different metrics as feedback and a comparison would be made between subjects with respect to standard metrics. Results of this experiment show that all subjects …

Nursing Administration Of The 3-Ounce Water Swallow Screen, Heather L. Warner Dr.

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction

Accurate and timely evaluation of swallowing is necessary to determine how to safely administer medications, maintain adequate nutrition and hydration, and avoid deleterious sequelae of prandial aspiration pneumonia. Use of a validated and reliable screening tool for determination of aspiration risk is a critical component of dysphagia management. The 3-ounce water swallow challenge (Suiter & Leder, 2008) is a validated and reliable screening tool that is well supported in the literature.

Statement of the Problem

While use of the 3-ounce water swallow challenge (Suiter & Leder 2008) administered by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) is supported by current research, who else …

An Exploration Of Threatened Harm As A Type Of Maltreatment And Its Relation To Recurrence Of Maltreatment, Roxann Mcneish Dec 2013

An Exploration Of Threatened Harm As A Type Of Maltreatment And Its Relation To Recurrence Of Maltreatment, Roxann Mcneish

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There were no studies found in the literature that primarily focused on threatened harm as type of maltreatment. This study utilized Florida's child welfare administrative data to explore threatened harm as a type of maltreatment, particularly as a predictor of recurrence of maltreatment within six and 12 months for children who had a verified report of maltreatment in FY2005-2006. Threatened harm was examined in three ways; when it was reported as the only maltreatment, the initial maltreatment, and in situations where there was a prior report. The most prevalent acts of threatened harm were examined separately. It was examined as …

Archaeology At The 1777 Ebenezer Story Site: The Household Economy Of A Family Of Fishermen-Farmers On The Thames River, Preston, Connecticut, Ross K. Harper, Bruce Clouette

Northeast Historical Archaeology

This paper uses data from a colonial-period maritime household site to expand understanding of the economic and subsistence practices of fisherman-farmer families. The site is the 1777 homestead of Ebenezer Story on the eastern bank of the Thames River in Preston, Connecticut, about 12 miles from Long Island Sound. Like many New England Yankees, Story had a diverse household economy: he practiced subsistence farming, fished and shellfished, and owned a saltworks, boats, and cider mill in common with his family. During the Revolutionary War, Story leased part of his land for the construction of the Continental frigate Confederacy, and he …

Growing Things "Rare, Foreign, And Tender": The Early Nineteenth-Century Greenhouse At Gore Place, Waltham Massachusetts, Christa M. Beranek, J. N. Leith Smith, John M. Steinberg, Michelle G. S. Garman Dec 2013

Growing Things "Rare, Foreign, And Tender": The Early Nineteenth-Century Greenhouse At Gore Place, Waltham Massachusetts, Christa M. Beranek, J. N. Leith Smith, John M. Steinberg, Michelle G. S. Garman

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Excavations and ground penetrating radar at Gore Place in Waltham, Massachusetts, uncovered part of an early 19th-century greenhouse (ca. 1806 to the early 1840s) constructed by Christopher and Rebecca Gore. Documentary, archaeological, and geophysical data suggest that the greenhouse was a formal space intended to display exotic plants and that it was built in the relatively new lean-to style, with a tall back wall and a short front wall. The artifact assemblage included tools and small finds related to the greenhouse operation, as well as the remains of at least 149 planting pots. The greenhouse was constructed during a period …

Patriots, Tories, Inebriates, And Hussies: The Historical Archaeology Of The Abraham Staats House, As A Case Study In Microhistory, Richard Veit, Michael J. Gall Dec 2013

Patriots, Tories, Inebriates, And Hussies: The Historical Archaeology Of The Abraham Staats House, As A Case Study In Microhistory, Richard Veit, Michael J. Gall

Northeast Historical Archaeology

To modern suburbanites, life on a farm may seem hopelessly boring or, alternatively, charming and idyllic. Excavations at the Abraham Staats House in New Jersey’s Raritan Valley, just upriver from New Brunswick, provide a revealing glimpse of the dynamic and contentious lives of 18th- and 19th-century farmers. The Staats family, part of the early 18th-century Dutch migration to the Raritan Valley, saw their lives transformed by the Revolutionary War, the arrival of turnpike roads, the construction of the Delaware and Raritan Canal, the emancipation of slaves, the growth of the temperance movement, and family squabbles of Shakespearean proportions. Excavations at …
