The Osterix Reporter Mouse Identifies A Bone Marrow Skeletal Progenitor Cell Population, Sara E. Strecker Dec 2013

The Osterix Reporter Mouse Identifies A Bone Marrow Skeletal Progenitor Cell Population, Sara E. Strecker

Doctoral Dissertations

Multipotent skeletal progenitor cells that reside in the bone marrow and contribute to the maintenance and repair of bone tissue are difficult to identify and, as a result, remain poorly understood. Osterix is a zinc finger transcription factor, which functions as a key regulator of bone formation. Cells of the osteoblast lineage generate bone tissue by depositing a mineralized matrix [1, 2]. Osterix is selectively expressed in cells of the osteoblast lineage and has an essential function in osteoblast commitment and bone formation [1, 3]. While it is generally accepted that Osterix is expressed …

The Relationship Between Insecure Attachment And Premarital Sexual Timing, Carly Ostler Dec 2013

The Relationship Between Insecure Attachment And Premarital Sexual Timing, Carly Ostler

Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies are beginning to show evidence of marital problems for couples that have engaged in early premarital sexual activity compared to those who do not. Adult attachment theory plays an important role in explaining many kinds of distress for couples and helps explain sexual interaction, thus, in this study it is posited that attachment may influence sexual timing patterns. This study focuses on the relationship between insecure attachment styles and early premarital sexual timing. The sample consisted of 256 couples who took the Relationship Evaluation (RELATE) to measure their attachment styles and sexual timing while controlling for length of …

Using Habit Reversal To Decrease Filled Pauses And Nervous Habits In Public Speaking, Carolyn Joanne Mancuso Dec 2013

Using Habit Reversal To Decrease Filled Pauses And Nervous Habits In Public Speaking, Carolyn Joanne Mancuso

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Public speaking is a challenge faced by people from all walks of life. Research in the area of public speaking has focused on examining techniques to reduce public speaking anxiety. Very little research, however, has focused on the acquisition of public speaking skills. While presenting speeches, many people engage in nervous habits that have the potential to decrease the effectiveness of the speech and their credibility as a speaker. This study evaluated the effectiveness of simplified habit reversal in reducing three of these nervous habits: filled pauses, tongue clicking, and inappropriate use of the word like. Following baseline, participants …

Evolution And Functional Morphology Of The Cephalic Lobes In Batoids, Samantha Lynn Mulvany Dec 2013

Evolution And Functional Morphology Of The Cephalic Lobes In Batoids, Samantha Lynn Mulvany

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cephalic lobes are unique structures derived from the anterior pectoral fins, found in select myliobatid stingrays. Many benthic batoids utilize undulatory locomotion and use their pectoral fins for both locomotion and prey capture. Pelagic myliobatids that possess cephalic lobes utilize oscillatory locomotion, using their pectoral fins to locomote and their cephalic lobes for prey capture. Despite differences in habitat usage and locomotor modes, these batoids feed on very similar benthic organisms. The purpose of this study was to 1.) compare the morphology of the cephalic lobes and anterior pectoral fins in lobed and lobeless species, looking at skeletal elements, musculature …

Physician Assistants: The Rise Of A Career From A Missed Opportunity In Nursing, Madeline Jary Dec 2013

Physician Assistants: The Rise Of A Career From A Missed Opportunity In Nursing, Madeline Jary

Honors Theses

The implementation of the concept of mid-level providers in healthcare has undoubtedly contributed greatly to the solution of the physician shortage. This shortage of physicians had posed a problem in the delivery of health care for decades, particularly in rural areas. Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants as we know them today may not have existed without previous groundwork and inspiration. The introduction of the nurse clinician concept by Frances Reiter in 1943 led to the later development of a masters nurse clinician program at Duke University by Dr. Eugene Stead and Thelma Ingles. Despite the denial of accreditation of the …

Differences Between Healthcare Systems In Costa Rica & The United States And How Those Differences Affect The Overall Quality Of Healthcare, Carlie Decker Dec 2013

Differences Between Healthcare Systems In Costa Rica & The United States And How Those Differences Affect The Overall Quality Of Healthcare, Carlie Decker

Honors Theses

This thesis seeks to examine the similarities and differences between the healthcare system employed in Costa Rica and the healthcare system employed in the United States through a series of interviews and web-based research. Four healthcare system components will be examined in order to determine the success of each system. These components include health insurance coverage, access to pharmaceuticals, medical licensing requirements, and medical research.

Following the completion of the interviews and research, I found that United States citizens pay nearly four times the amount Costa Rican citizens do for health insurance coverage. This dramatic increase in price can be …

Defects In Synapse Structure And Function Precede Motor Neuron Degeneration In Drosophila Models Of Fus-Related Als., Mohammad Shahidullah, Sylvain J Le Marchand, Hong Fei, Jiaming Zhang, Udai Bhan Pandey, Matthew B. Dalva, Piera Pasinelli, Irwin B. Levitan

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an adult-onset neurodegenerative disease that leads invariably to fatal paralysis associated with motor neuron degeneration and muscular atrophy. One gene associated with ALS encodes the DNA/RNA-binding protein Fused in Sarcoma (FUS). There now exist two Drosophila models of ALS. In one, human FUS with ALS-causing mutations is expressed in fly motor neurons; in the other, the gene cabeza (caz), the fly homolog of FUS, is ablated. These FUS-ALS flies exhibit larval locomotor defects indicative of neuromuscular dysfunction and early death. The locus and site of initiation of this neuromuscular dysfunction remain unclear. We show here …

The Role Of Algal Symbiont Community Dynamics In Reef Coral Responses To Global Climate Change, Ross Cunning Dec 2013

The Role Of Algal Symbiont Community Dynamics In Reef Coral Responses To Global Climate Change, Ross Cunning

Open Access Dissertations

The continued growth and survival of reef-building corals is essential to sustain the goods and services provided by coral reefs, worth billions of dollars annually. However, warming oceans are causing more frequent and severe episodes of coral bleaching, the breakdown of symbiosis between corals and their algal symbionts (Symbiodinium spp.), which threatens corals’ survival unless they can adapt or acclimatize. One way that corals may increase their thermal tolerance is by associating with different Symbiodinium types. Changes in partner abundance may also have functional consequences, but these symbiont dynamics are poorly understood. This dissertation aims to provide a clearer understanding …

Exploring The Mechanisms By Which Increasing Dietary Protein Induces Iron Transporter Expression And Improves Intestinal Iron Absorption, Carrie Elizabeth Thomas Dec 2013

Exploring The Mechanisms By Which Increasing Dietary Protein Induces Iron Transporter Expression And Improves Intestinal Iron Absorption, Carrie Elizabeth Thomas

Doctoral Dissertations

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. Whole body iron balance is primarily controlled through the regulation of intestinal iron absorption. Therefore, the identification of factors that affect iron absorption is important for the development of therapies aimed at improving iron status in deficient individuals. We recently found that increasing dietary protein in rats enhances duodenal iron absorption. This protein-induced increase in iron absorption is associated with augmented transcript levels of key intestinal iron transporters, including the iron importer, DMT1.

To determine whether dietary protein directly affects DMT1 expression in vitro, the effect of amino acid supplementation on …

Label Retention Identifies A Multipotent Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Like Population In The Postnatal Thymus, Masako Osada, Varan J. Singh, Kenmin Wu, Derek B. Sant’Angelo, Mark Pezzano

Publications and Research

Thymic microenvironments are essential for the proper development and selection of T cells critical for a functional and self-tolerant adaptive immune response. While significant turnover occurs, it is unclear whether populations of adult stem cells contribute to the maintenance of postnatal thymic epithelial microenvironments. Here, the slow cycling characteristic of stem cells and their property of label-retention were used to identify a K5-expressing thymic stromal cell population capable of generating clonal cell lines that retain the capacity to differentiate into a number of mesenchymal lineages including adipocytes, chondrocytes and osteoblasts suggesting a mesenchymal stem cell-like phenotype. Using cell surface analysis …
