Objectives—To assess whether the addition of a peer testimonial to an informational mailing increases conversion rates from brand-name prescription medications to lower-cost therapeutic equivalents, and whether the testimonial’s efficacy increases when information is added about an affiliation the quoted individual shares with the recipient.

Research Design and Methods—5,498 union members were randomly assigned to receive one of three different informational letters: one without a testimonial (No Testimonial Group), one with a testimonial from a person whose shared union affiliation with the recipient was not disclosed (Unaffiliated Testimonial Group), and one with a testimonial from a person whose shared union affiliation …

Coming Home: Servant-Leadership, Men, And The Road Back To One Another, Shann Ray Ferch Jan 2013

Coming Home: Servant-Leadership, Men, And The Road Back To One Another, Shann Ray Ferch

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

A primary reason for the general malaise and lack of leadership experienced by many in contemporary society coincides with a loss of the essence of what it means to live in and be developed by a real community, or to encounter what might be called a sense of home. In Greenleaf's terms, the true community is a result of servant-leaders working to meet the most ultimate needs of those with whom they come into contact. The result of meeting such needs is that others grow wiser, more free, more healthy, and more autonomous. In Greenleaf's conception, in a good community, …

Servant-Leadership Characteristics, Personality Type, And The Hierarchy Of Functions, Beth A. Lafferty, Ralph Lewis, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The 2008 International Journal of Servant-Leadership featured a groundbreaking dialogue on Myers Briggs and Servant-Leadership written by Larry Spears and Ralph Lewis. In the intervening years, it has generated considerable interest among readers and researchers alike. Near the end of that dialogue, Larry asked Ralph this question: "I am wondering if there is something here for servant-leaders that might be explored over time as a developmental tool, or as a piece of writing that would address the sixteen types in relation to servant-leadership?"

We ask them what their biggest challenges are and how we can help them-it goes beyond simply selling products....I try to be a humble servant even in the littlest of ways, calling them, telling them "I'm thinking about you."...People want to have a relationship with others who show a genuine caring attitude for them. -Packaging materials salesperson

Servant-Leadership Applied To Balance World Inequalities And Enhance Global Forgiveness And Restoration, Christian B. Cabezas Jan 2013

Servant-Leadership Applied To Balance World Inequalities And Enhance Global Forgiveness And Restoration, Christian B. Cabezas

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Many years have passed since the end of World War II. In this war that stemmed from hate, unhealthy ambition, and a sense of superiority from within different cultures, millions of lives were lost. Some authors, including a number that were survivors of that war, have documented and described the horrors and atrocities committed. Wiesenthal (1998) raised the dilemma of the possibility of forgiveness to the perpetrators of the massacres committed in this war. Mandela and Tutu (1999), with their experience in South Africa and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, have shown the world that it is possible to forgive …

The Organizational Impacts Of Community On Retention And Satisfaction: A Sociological Approach To Servant-Leadership, Kirk D. Young Jan 2013

The Organizational Impacts Of Community On Retention And Satisfaction: A Sociological Approach To Servant-Leadership, Kirk D. Young

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The theme of community has been extensively researched in the sociological field; for many years sociologists have studied how community impacts various factors of the human experience. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the elements of community materialize within, and carry an influence throughout, the arena of leadership. By focusing on the potential that servant-leaders have for establishing community within organizations, it will be seen that the powerful effects thereof can be identified and understood on a scale much smaller than the town, city, or society-entities often the focus of the sociological study. The elements of community …

Do Bark Beetle Outbreaks Increase Wildfire Risks In The Central U.S. Rocky Mountains? Implications From Recent Research, Scott H. Black, Dominik Kulakowski, Barry R. Noon, Dominick A. Dellasala Jan 2013

Do Bark Beetle Outbreaks Increase Wildfire Risks In The Central U.S. Rocky Mountains? Implications From Recent Research, Scott H. Black, Dominik Kulakowski, Barry R. Noon, Dominick A. Dellasala

Geography

Appropriate response to recent, widespread bark beetle (Dendroctonus spp.) outbreaks in the western United States has been the subject of much debate in scientific and policy circles. Among the proposed responses have been landscape-level mechanical treatments to prevent the further spread of outbreaks and to reduce the fire risk that is believed to be associated with insect-killed trees. We review the literature on the efficacy of silvicutural practices to control outbreaks and on fire risk following bark beetle outbreaks in several forest types. While research is ongoing and important questions remain unresolved, to date most available evidence indicates that bark …

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Background: The causes of the underutilization of disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS) for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are not fully known, but may in part, relate to individual patient factors including risk perception. Our objective was to identify the determinants of risk perception (RP) in RA patients and predictors of their willingness to take a proposed DMARD (DMARD willingness). Methods. A cross-sectional mail survey of RA patients in a community rheumatology practice. Patients were presented a hypothetical decision scenario where they were asked to consider switching DMARDs. They evaluated how risky the proposed medication was and how likely they would be …

Aboriginal And Treaty Rights And Violence Against Women, John Borrows Jan 2013

Aboriginal And Treaty Rights And Violence Against Women, John Borrows

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Violence against Indigenous women is a crisis of national proportions. Unfortunately, Indigenous peoples have been prevented from arguing that Indigenous communities are a constitutional site of activity for dealing with such violence. This article suggests that Aboriginal and treaty rights under section 35 of the Constitution could play a significant role in ensuring that all levels of government are seized with the responsibility for dealing with violence against women. This article explores how section 35 could be reinterpreted in ways that place issues of gender and violence at the heart of its analysis.

Citizen Spouse, Kerry Abrams Jan 2013

Citizen Spouse, Kerry Abrams

Faculty Scholarship

Marriage and citizenship have a complicated relationship to one another. Marriage is often the primary way in which a person can exercise and demonstrate his or her identity under law, by claiming legal benefits and by performing legal obligations. This Essay examines the history of one particularly salient example of marriage-as-citizenship — the derivative domicile rule — and uses this history to consider how the relationship between marriage and citizenship has changed and developed over time. The derivative domicile rule linked a woman’s domicile, and her state citizenship along with all the rights and obligations it carried, with her husband’s …

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Schizophrenia is a chronic and debilitating psychiatric condition affecting slightly more than 1% of the population worldwide and it is a multifactorial disorder with a high degree of heritability (80%) based on family and twin studies. Increasing lines of evidence suggest intermediate phenotypes/endophenotypes are more associated with causes of the disease and are less genetically complex than the broader disease spectrum. Negative symptoms in schizophrenia are attractive intermediate phenotypes based on their clinical and treatment response features. Therefore, our objective was to identify genetic variants underlying the negative symptoms of schizophrenia by analyzing two genome-wide association (GWA) data sets consisting …

The Harvest Of Ministry: Exploring The Ministry Of Women Religious In Cleveland, Robert L. Fischer Jan 2013

The Harvest Of Ministry: Exploring The Ministry Of Women Religious In Cleveland, Robert L. Fischer

Faculty Scholarship

Women religious serve in a range of ministries, often with the most disenfranchised in society. The nature of sisters' ministries has often been reduced to its external character – providing education, health care, or social services. What has been less understood is the enduring nature of the forces underlying these ministries. This study draws on six focus group conversations involving 33 Catholic sisters. The study surfaces key themes that frame a better understanding of the work of today's women religious. These themes can be adapted for others who seek to work with people in need.

Food For The Soul: Feasting And Fasting In The Spanish Middle Ages, Martha Daas Jan 2013

Food For The Soul: Feasting And Fasting In The Spanish Middle Ages, Martha Daas

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

This article examines the concept of "Christian" eating that can be found in a variety of texts from the 13th and 14th centuries. “Christian” eating can be defined as consumption that follows the precepts of the Christian calendar and also the recommendations of the Church. As both fasting and feasting are integral elements of the medieval calendar, this article looks at the depiction of food, its consumption, and its role in religious ritual in texts as varied as the Milagros de Nuestra Señora, the Vidas of Santa Maria Egipciaca and Santa Marta, and the more doctrinally liberal Libro de buen …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Neisseria meningitidis is one of the leading causes of bacterial meningitis globally and can also cause sepsis, pneumonia, and other manifestations. In countries with high endemic rates, the disease burden places an immense strain on the public health system. The worldwide epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) varies markedly by region and over time. This review summarizes the burden of IMD in different countries and identifies the highest-incidence countries where routine preventive programs against Neisseria meningitidis would be most beneficial in providing protection. Available epidemiological data from the past 20years in World Health Organization and European Centre for Disease Prevention …

The Relationship Of Teacher, Student, And Content In The Clinical Psychology Classroom, Hannah Lord Jan 2013

The Relationship Of Teacher, Student, And Content In The Clinical Psychology Classroom, Hannah Lord

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The field of clinical psychology is in the midst of redefining graduate school education with a push for competency-based approaches and measurable learning outcomes. This dissertation explores the best-practice knowledge regarding the education of professional clinical psychology graduate students and uses cooperative inquiry to richly detail the educational approach of a thus far “silent stakeholder,” Dr. Colborn W. Smith, a long-time teacher and training director. This inquiry is intended to help me [Hannah Lord] understand an important personal educational experience, to explore the tangible art of teaching that made such an experience possible, and to contribute to the evolving discourse …

Returning The Self To Professional Psychology, Scott Alan Markham Jan 2013

Returning The Self To Professional Psychology, Scott Alan Markham

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The following theoretical dissertation used an object relational approach to consider integrating the self and professional psychology training. Professional psychology training once valued the emerging and diverse experiences of the trainee's self. However, the recent shift to competency based education models in professional psychology has emphasized self-competency rather than the processes that foster the integration of trainees' emerging identities. This paper argued that the competency-based education models based on positivistic science frameworks limited further dialogues of self-discovery, the processes of on-going self-reflection, and meaning making processes of self. The purpose of this dissertation was to continue the dialogue of self …

Children's Constructed Meanings Of Sisterhood When An Older Sibling Has Autism, Jamie L. Carroll Jan 2013

Children's Constructed Meanings Of Sisterhood When An Older Sibling Has Autism, Jamie L. Carroll

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Sibling relationships have been recognized as important in facilitating the acquisition of emotional and social understanding and even assisting in cognitive development (Sanders, 2004). Sibling relationships that include one child with a disability are especially significant and worthy of study, as typical siblings tend to take on more responsibility for their siblings' care across their lifespan (Cicirelli, 1995). In attempting to understand these sibling relationships in childhood, past researchers have largely relied on parent report and behavioral observations. In order to advance the field's understanding of sibling relationships when one child autism, this study asked children to voice their perspectives …

Addressing Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Bullying: A Mindfulness-Based Intervention Manual, Melanie L. Ernould Jan 2013

Addressing Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Bullying: A Mindfulness-Based Intervention Manual, Melanie L. Ernould

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The following dissertation offers an intervention to combat the negative effects that bullying has
on lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth in high school. The literature review demonstrates the need for such an intervention through examples of the damaging effects that such bullying has on LGB youth. These incidents of bullying are far too common in American schools, and the effects far reaching, as the media has been saturated with stories of “gay teen suicides” in recent years. While affirmative interventions are currently the status quo for work with LGB populations, it can be argued that these are limited. In …
