A Community Based System Of Integrated Clinical Care: Primary Care, Mental Health And Substance Use Treatment, Terri Reuvers Jan 2013

A Community Based System Of Integrated Clinical Care: Primary Care, Mental Health And Substance Use Treatment, Terri Reuvers

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Our segregated medical and mental health care system misses opportunities for early detection of physical disease. Missed opportunities lead to increased costs. Colorado’s Medicaid health plan estimates that an integrated health program will reduce costs for patients with psychiatric disorders by 10%. The cost of doing nothing may exceed $300 billion per year in the United States (NCCBH, 2010). The purpose of this Capstone project is to critically examine existing models of Integrated Primary and Mental Health care. These models will then be evaluated to identify those most compatible with rural communities in Southern Minnesota.

Tax Incentives For Innovation In A Modern Ip Ecosystem, Joshua Chao Jan 2013

Tax Incentives For Innovation In A Modern Ip Ecosystem, Joshua Chao

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Technological innovation is a long-recognized catalyst for economic growth in the United States, and its promotion is an important feature of national economic policy, as evidenced by the presence of various tax incentives for innovation in the US Internal Revenue Code. Tax incentives are an important means by which governments can deliver subsidies to promote such innovation. To be effective, however, any system of tax incentives must be tailored for current economic conditions and competitive landscapes. In the current ecosystem of innovation in the United States, this means that, at the very least, the incentives for innovation in the US …

Late Fathers' Later Children: Reconceiving The Limits Of Survivor's Benefits In Response To Death-Defying Reproductive Technology, Jeffrey W. Sheehan Jan 2013

Late Fathers' Later Children: Reconceiving The Limits Of Survivor's Benefits In Response To Death-Defying Reproductive Technology, Jeffrey W. Sheehan

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

When Congress instructed the Social Security Administration to begin paying a social insurance benefit to "widows and orphans" in the 1930s, it simplified the process of determining an applicant's relationship to an insured decedent in two significant ways: First, Congress ordered the agency to honor the intestate laws of each state when determining whether an applicant was actually the child of a decedent, and second, it ordered the agency to treat any child who could qualify as an intestate heir as if that child actually depended on the parent financially at the time of the parent's death. Three-quarters of a …

What High School Principals Do To Develop, Implement, And Sustain A High Functioning Character Education Initiative, Jacob A. Francom

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Principal leadership is crucial to the success of a high school character education initiative. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory research was to identify the roles and effective practices that high school principals utilize in developing, implementing, and sustaining a high functioning character education program. Fourteen high school principals from around the country, representing different schools, were interviewed one-on-one through Skype, Google Hangout, or by telephone. Data were collected during these one-on-one semi-structured interviews and analyzed through three separate coding procedures: (a) open coding, (b) axial coding, and (c) selective coding. Open coding analyzed the concepts emerging from the …

A Study Of The Relationship Between High School Principal Leadership Style And The Number Of Bullying Behaviors In Montana Public High Schools, James Edward Fuller

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This quantitative study examines the relationship between the leadership style of 19 Montana high school principals and the number of incidents of serious bullying that occurred in their schools during the 2011-2012 school year. Bullying behavior and its many negative ramifications is a problem of paramount importance for educators today. This study shines new light on the topic by testing the effect of the principal’s leadership behavior on one measurement of the bullying problem.

Data on principal leadership style, the independent variable, was gathered via the Multi- Factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ 360 Form 5X Short). This survey measured each leader’s …

The Moral Layers Of Fracking: From Basic Rights And Obligations To Human Flourishing, Angela L. Hotaling Jan 2013

The Moral Layers Of Fracking: From Basic Rights And Obligations To Human Flourishing, Angela L. Hotaling

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As it is currently being discussed, hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” is the unconventional method of drilling and extracting oil and natural gas. Fracking starts at the earth’s surface where the technology is created and the sites are constructed. The process continues downward: drills pierce thousands of feet vertically and then horizontally underground. Then, millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and chemicals (referred to as “fracking fluid” or “slick water”) are pumped at high pressure through the pipe so as to fracture shale deposits and release gas or oil. Whether to allow fracking and its associated industrial activity is …

The Value Of Knowing: Public Lands Monitoring By Non-Agency Groups, Aaron Richard Olsen Jan 2013

The Value Of Knowing: Public Lands Monitoring By Non-Agency Groups, Aaron Richard Olsen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

It is generally recognized that in order to make informed federal land management decisions, such decisions need to be based on information gathered from monitoring of those lands. While some monitoring is being conducted by federal land management agencies, it is happening too infrequently and is often inadequate for properly informing land management decisions. In an attempt to fill this gap non-agency groups have begun monitoring federal public lands themselves. It appears that through recent congressional authorizations, policy reforms, and agency initiatives monitoring by non-agency groups is being supported at every government level. While theoretically this transfer of responsibility from …

Tourism Sector Perceptions Of Vulnerability To Environmental Change In Glacier National Park, U.S.A., Nicholas Youngstrom

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Glacier National Park, a highly visible example of climate change impacts, is also extremely important for local inhabitants that depend on park resources to generate tourism. Consequently, if those resources are altered, tourism could be adversely affected. To explore this range of climate change impacts on the human community, as well as how vulnerability is perceived and experienced, twenty-three operators in the Glacier region were interviewed. These interviews were then analyzed using content analysis, which allowed themes related to vulnerability to be detailed. Operators identified several ways in which they experience vulnerability to climate change, particularly through wildfire, extreme weather, …

The Effect Of A Cannabinoid Receptor 2 (Cb2) Agonist On Allergic Airway Inflammation In A Mouse Model Of Asthma, Soram Hong

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Allergic asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects approximately 300 million people worldwide. The health problem is compounded by the fact that the prevalence of the disease is increasing in the Western world. Thus, there is a continued need for new and improved therapies for the disease. Recently, it has become evident that cannabinoids have immunosuppressive properties and can be used as therapeutics for various inflammatory diseases. The main aim of this study was to explore the anti-inflammatory effects of CB2 agonists on allergic airway inflammation using a mouse model of asthma and resolve any mechanisms that underpin the …

Adolescent Sleep And Cellular Phone Use: Recent Trends And Implications For Research, Sue K. Adams, Jennifer F. Daly, Desirée N. Williford

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

Adolescent sleep needs range from 8.5–10 hours per night, with older adolescents requiring less sleep than younger adolescents. On average, however, American adolescents receive between 7.5–8.5 hours of sleep per night, with many sleeping fewer than 6.5 hours on school nights. Cellular phone use is emerging as an important factor that interferes with both sleep quality and quantity, particularly as smartphones become more widely available to teens. This review paper has three objectives. First, we will describe adolescent sleep patterns and the effects of sleep deprivation on adolescent physical and mental health. Second, we will describe current trends in technology …

Prosocial Behavior Among Children With And Without Disabilities: Centering On Teacher’S Perception On The Teacher - Child Relationship, Hyunjin Kim Jan 2013

Prosocial Behavior Among Children With And Without Disabilities: Centering On Teacher’S Perception On The Teacher - Child Relationship, Hyunjin Kim

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

Data were gathered from 81 preschool children and their teachers, all of whom were participating in an ongoing longitudinal research project in the Midwest, US. The results showed that there were mean differences in prosocial behaviors and teacher-child close relationships by disability type and program type. However, when analyzing children without disabilities, there were no mean differences in prosocial behaviors and teacher-child close relationship by program type. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that …

Perioperative Management Of Interscalene Block In Patients With Lung Disease., Eric S. Schwenk, Kishor Gandhi, Eugene R. Viscusi Jan 2013

Perioperative Management Of Interscalene Block In Patients With Lung Disease., Eric S. Schwenk, Kishor Gandhi, Eugene R. Viscusi

Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

Interscalene nerve block impairs ipsilateral lung function and is relatively contraindicated for patients with lung impairment. We present a case of an 89-year-old female smoker with prior left lung lower lobectomy and mild to moderate lung disease who presented for right shoulder arthroplasty and insisted on regional anesthesia. The patient received a multimodal perioperative regimen that consisted of a continuous interscalene block, acetaminophen, ketorolac, and opioids. Surgery proceeded uneventfully and postoperative analgesia was excellent. Pulmonary physiology and management of these patients will be discussed. A risk/benefit discussion should occur with patients having impaired lung function before performance of interscalene blocks. …

Gender-Related Values, Perceptions Of Discrimination, And Mentoring In Stem Graduate Training, Amy Roberson Hayes, Rebecca S. Bigler Jan 2013

Gender-Related Values, Perceptions Of Discrimination, And Mentoring In Stem Graduate Training, Amy Roberson Hayes, Rebecca S. Bigler

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although girls and boys appear equally interested in most STEM fields during childhood and adolescence, men pursue academic research careers in most of these same fields at higher rates than women. We tested several prominent hypotheses concerning the causes of this differentiation. Specifically, 136 (59 women) doctoral students in the United States completed measures of their occupational values, views of the degree to which STEM careers afford their values, perceptions of gender discrimination in their department, mentor support, and satisfaction with their graduate training. Results indicated gender differences in students’ occupational values, ratings of career value affordances, and perceptions of …

Has Speech-Language Pathology Changed? Personality Types Of Contemporary Students, Terry W. Baggs

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The influence of personality on therapy outcomes is largely unknown. However, clinical success in a broad sense may be influenced appreciably by personality, as persons with differing personalities comprise a therapy team. Purpose: This study assessed the personality traits of a large number of graduate students in speech-language pathology and compared the results to those of a generation ago. This information is valuable in preparing students for both educational and workplace success. Method: A total of 320 graduate students in speech-language pathology at six universities completed the Keirsey Temperament Sorter-II. Frequency and proportional data of personality type and temperament and …

Associations Among Family History Of Cancer, Cancer Screening And Lifestyle Behaviors: A Population-Based Study, Georgiana Bostean, Catherine M. Crespi, William J. Mccarthy

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Purpose Some cancers are largely preventable through modification of certain behavioral risk factors and preventive screening, even among those with a family history of cancer. This study examined the associations between (1) family cancer history and cancer screening, (2) family history and cancer preventive lifestyle behaviors, and (3) cancer screening and lifestyle behaviors.

Methods Data were from the 2009 California Health Interview Survey (n = 12,603). Outcomes included screening for breast cancer (BC) and colorectal cancer (CRC) and six cancer preventive lifestyle behaviors, based on World Cancer Research Fund recommendations. Multivariate logistic regression analyses, stratified by gender and race–ethnicity, examined …

Prison Is Prison, Brooke Coleman Jan 2013

Prison Is Prison, Brooke Coleman

Faculty Articles

Two indigent men stand before two separate judges. Both will be sent to prison if they lose their cases. One receives appointed counsel, but the other does not. This discrepancy seems terribly unjust, yet the Supreme Court has no problem with it. It recently affirmed in Turner v. Rogers, that where an indigent individual is subject to criminal charges that can result in incarceration, he has a right to appointed counsel, but where an indigent individual is subject to civil proceedings where incarceration is a consequence, he does not. In other words, criminal and civil proceedings have different rules, and …

The Irs Tea Party Controversy And Administrative Discretion, Lily Kahng Jan 2013

The Irs Tea Party Controversy And Administrative Discretion, Lily Kahng

Faculty Articles

The IRS Tea Party controversy erupted when the Treasury Inspector General issued a report finding that IRS employees in the Cincinnati office had targeted certain organizations’ applications for tax exempt status for heightened scrutiny, in particular singling out groups with “Tea Party” or “Patriot” in their names. A media firestorm ensued, with fevered speculation about a hidden political agenda extending all the way to the White House. A complete picture of the controversy has yet to emerge, but as of the writing of this Essay, it appears that the worst suspicions about political bias are unfounded. Nonetheless, the IRS has …

We Have A Dream: Integrating Skills Courses And Public Interest Work In The First Year Of Law School (And Beyond), Sara Rankin, Lisa Brodoff, Mary Bowman

Faculty Articles

The clinical and legal writing faculty at the Seattle University School of Law are experimenting with collaborative teaching projects that bring real clients and real legal problems into the first year curriculum. These “integrated skills projects” engage first year students with legal writing faculty, clinical faculty, and public interest work. These projects provide first year students with exceptional training in practical skills, generate remarkable student satisfaction, and re-ignite student passion for the practice of law. This essay (1) introduces a “continuum” of integrated legal skills projects, featuring applied examples of activities that range from discrete to more ambitious; (2) surveys …

Slow Logo: Brand Citizenship In Global Value Networks, Margaret Chon Jan 2013

Slow Logo: Brand Citizenship In Global Value Networks, Margaret Chon

Faculty Articles

This article makes a case for a theoretical departure from dominant approaches to trademark law. It explains and then connects information capitalism to new governance through the heuristic of brand citizenship. Through these suggested analytical lenses, it examines a case study of ‘Big Fashion,’ which has become a highly concentrated industry focused almost solely on maximizing shareholder profit without regard to consumer, environment, or labor impact. It then concludes with some suggestions regarding the functions of brand citizenship in increasingly globalized markets where downward pressure on prices translates into greater global public “bads” often imposed upon the most vulnerable. For …

The Invention Of Asian Americans, Robert S. Chang Jan 2013

The Invention Of Asian Americans, Robert S. Chang

Faculty Articles

The essay begins by examining amicus briefs submitted in Fisher v. Texas by Asian American organizations in support of and in opposition to affirmative action. What does it mean when groups that purportedly protect, advance, and represent the interests of Asian Americans invoke the historical treatment of Asian Americans and present facts about Asian Americans but end up advocating for opposite outcomes? This Essay starts with the competing Asian American perspectives and assertions of authority expressed in these briefs to explore the theme of a Symposium at the UC Irvine School of Law, provocatively entitled, Reigniting Community: Strengthening the APA …

Embracing The Queen Of Hearts: Deference To Retroactive Tax Rules, James Puckett Jan 2013

Embracing The Queen Of Hearts: Deference To Retroactive Tax Rules, James Puckett

Faculty Articles

The Supreme Court's decision in Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research v. United States underscored the importance of a uniform approach to judicial review of administrative action; accordingly, the Court clarified that tax administration is generally subject to the same review as other kinds of administrative action by other federal agencies. Tax guidance from the IRS and Treasury Department serves an important role in clarifying the tax law so that taxpayers may report their tax liability accurately and plan their affairs. Meanwhile, aggressive attempts by a relatively small number of taxpayers to avoid tax liability by exploiting arguable ambiguities …

The Essence Of Antitrust: Protecting Consumers And Small Suppliers From Anticompetitive Conduct, John B. Kirkwood Jan 2013

The Essence Of Antitrust: Protecting Consumers And Small Suppliers From Anticompetitive Conduct, John B. Kirkwood

Faculty Articles

The goals of antitrust law continue to be debated because there is no single goal that is unambiguously correct. There is one goal, however, that now commands wider support than any other: protecting consumers and small suppliers from anticompetitive conduct – conduct that creates market power, transfers wealth from consumers or small suppliers, and fails to provide them with compensating benefits. This goal is the predominant objective in the legislative histories, it is broadly supported by the American people, it is easier to administer than total welfare, and it is now espoused by the majority of courts. Proponents of total …
