Web-Scale Discovery And Federated Search, Valeri Craigle Nov 2013

Web-Scale Discovery And Federated Search, Valeri Craigle

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

In stark contrast to the library card catalogs of old, today’s library search interfaces offer much more than one-dimensional, item-specific searching. Users are now engaged in a process of discovery in which they are empowered to control not only the sources of content being searched, but also the context into which information is delivered, and the platform onto which information is synthesized. By eliminating the barriers to information discovery, law libraries can position themselves as true partners in this process, defining their mission in new ways, and providing critical services in an ever-complex information ecosystem.

The Role Of Parental Experience In Entrepreneurship Choice Among Adults, Eric Thompson, Carlos Asarta, Ziwen Zhang, Felipe Lemarie Nov 2013

The Role Of Parental Experience In Entrepreneurship Choice Among Adults, Eric Thompson, Carlos Asarta, Ziwen Zhang, Felipe Lemarie

Bureau of Business Research Publications

Entrepreneurship choice is influenced by a number of contemporaneous variables including household wealth, spouse's education, gender, family composition, and health. Family background is another important factor; in particular whether a parent was involved in entrepreneurship. The long-running Panel Study of Income Dynamics provides an opportunity to examine the influence of parental entrepreneurship, from the 1960s and 1970s, on the entrepreneurship choices of middle-age Americans in the late 2000s. Consistent with previous literature, we find that parental experience is a consistent predictor of entrepreneurship choice for contemporary Americans. Our results, however, shed light in particular on the contribution of parental entrepreneurship …

Not What, But When Is An Offer: Rehabilitating The Rolling Contract, Colin P. Marks Nov 2013

Not What, But When Is An Offer: Rehabilitating The Rolling Contract, Colin P. Marks

Faculty Works

A number of courts have held that a contract is formed when deferred terms found inside the package are reviewed by the buyer and accepted by some act—usually use of the good. This “rolling” contract approach has been widely criticized by commentators as an abomination of contract law that ignores a true application of the U.C.C., as well as the spirit of that code. However, the approach is not without its allure, as it permits contracts to be formed in an efficient manner that may very well appeal to consumers. Yet too strict of an adherence to the approach threatens …

A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement And Perceptions Of Leadership Skills And Citizenship Traits Of Jrotc, Student Athletes, And Other Students In An Urban High School Setting, Carmen Williams-Bonds

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare three groups: JROTC students, student athletes, and other students, to determine if there were differences in academic achievement. Gaining an understanding of the necessary skills required to become academically successful and make healthy life choices, could provide educators working within an urban environment insight for student success. The study was conducted within a Midwest urban high school in which, 98.5% of the students were African American. Student performance data in the areas of reading and math for the past three years had been trending downward and caused the high school to be …

Humans Have Precise Knowledge Of Familiar Geographical Slants, Anthony Stigliani , '12, Z. Li, Frank H. Durgin Nov 2013

Humans Have Precise Knowledge Of Familiar Geographical Slants, Anthony Stigliani , '12, Z. Li, Frank H. Durgin

Psychology Faculty Works

Whereas maps primarily represent the 2-dimensional layout of the environment, people are also aware of the 3-dimensional layout of their environment. An experiment conducted on a small colregt edinpus tested whether the remembered slants of familiar paths were precisely represented. Three measures of slant (verbal, manual, and pictorial) were collected in 2 different between-subject conditions (perception and memory) for 5 familiar paths on the campus of Swarthmore College, ranging in slant from 0.5 to 8.6. Estimates from memory and from perception did not differ for any of the measures. Moreover, estimates from all measures, though different in mean value, were …

Urban Responses To Climate Change: Theories And Governance Practice In Cities Of The Global South, Dirk Heinrichs, Kerstin Krellenberg, Michail Fragkias

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cities around the world have recently started to become ‘proactive’ initiators of climate strategies containing both mitigation and adaptation elements. The experience of these first movers has been studied and documented both empirically and, to a lesser extent, theoretically, primarily for cities in the global North. This symposium addresses related knowledge gaps by exploring case studies of urban regions in the global South confronting their projected climate change challenges, showcasing the experiences of Delhi, Santiago de Chile and Bogotá. Its specific aim is to explore the urban social response to nature change, the adaptation challenges faced by cities across the …

The Concomitant Relationship Shared By Sleep Disturbances And Type 2 Diabetes: Developing Telemedicine As A Viable Treatment Option, Pennie S. Seibert, Jennifer Valerio, Codieann Dehaas Nov 2013

The Concomitant Relationship Shared By Sleep Disturbances And Type 2 Diabetes: Developing Telemedicine As A Viable Treatment Option, Pennie S. Seibert, Jennifer Valerio, Codieann Dehaas

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Individually, sleep disturbances and type 2 diabetes pose pervasive challenges to health. In addition, the negative symptomology associated with each condition is exacerbated further when presenting concomitantly. This relationship formulates a destructive loop wherein those with diabetes experience decreased sleep quality, which, in turn, worsens a wide range of health threats experienced by those with diabetes, including obesity and glucose intolerance. Because major lifestyle changes and daily care are needed to effectively manage both diabetes and sleep disturbances, an efficient and timely modality of treatment is essential. Advanced technology incorporating telemedicine and telehealth has the potential to enhance treatment by …

The Development Of The ‘Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale In Biology’ (Sdlrsbio) For Pre-University Biology Students, K. Siew Wai, E.G.S. Daniel Nov 2013

The Development Of The ‘Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale In Biology’ (Sdlrsbio) For Pre-University Biology Students, K. Siew Wai, E.G.S. Daniel

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In past research, the measurement of students’ SDL readiness focused on self-motivation, self-management, and self-monitoring. These measurements were found to be too general to conclude one as a self-directed learner. Self-directedness should be specific for each subject area. This paper will discuss the pilot study of a larger research, where the SDLRSbio was developed using the Delphi technique. Specific biology laboratory skills readiness, experimental skills readiness, and data analysis and interpretation skills readiness were embedded in the SDLRSbio to ensure specificity in measuring biology students’ SDL readiness. The SDLRSbio developed consisted of 46 items in a 5 point Likert-scale. This …

Remarkable Russian Women In Pictures, Prose And Poetry, Marcelline Hutton Nov 2013

Remarkable Russian Women In Pictures, Prose And Poetry, Marcelline Hutton

Zea E-Books Collection

Many Russian women of the late 19th and early 20th centuries tried to find happy marriages, authentic religious life, liberal education, and fulfilling work as artists, doctors, teachers, and political activists. Some very remarkable ones found these things in varying degrees, while others sought unsuccessfully but no less desperately to transcend the generations-old restrictions imposed by church, state, village, class, and gender.

Like a Slavic “Downton Abbey,” this book tells the stories, not just of their outward lives, but of their hearts and minds, their voices and dreams, their amazing accomplishments against overwhelming odds, and their roles as feminists and …

KIP Articles

Caves are natural museums housing ancient relics, unusual life forms, and amazing discoveries- wrapped in a shell of geologic history. Karst landscapes are spectacular, their aquifers provide hundreds of millions of people worldwide with drinking water, yet few have ever heard the word. The importance and fragility of these resources make them both exciting and challenging to interpret. An exhibition focusing on cave and karst resources can effectively communicate the scientific, environmental and stewardship messages to non-technical audiences. As a world leader in understanding caves and karst, and the effect of their resources on our health, economy, and future, NCKRI …

National Park Service Cave Ecology Inventory And Monitoring Framework, National Cave And Karst Research Institute

KIP Articles

A team developed the Cave Ecology Inventory and Monitoring Framework for National Park Service (NPS) units. It contains information for NPS cave managers across the United States to determine how to inventory and monitor cave ecology. Due to the wide geographical scope of NPS caves and their many different types, the document does not prescribe exact protocols. Instead, it provides guidance for what types of inventory and monitoring are possible, a framework for deciding how to prioritize inventory and monitoring activities, and references to specific protocols that are already in place at NPS cave parks.

Horizontal Collaborative E-Purchasing For Hospitals: It For Addressing Collaborative Purchasing Impediments, Robbert J. G. Kusters, Johan Versendaal Nov 2013

Horizontal Collaborative E-Purchasing For Hospitals: It For Addressing Collaborative Purchasing Impediments, Robbert J. G. Kusters, Johan Versendaal

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Horizontal collaborative purchasing (HCP) has often been cited as a way for hospitals to address the challenges of the rising healthcare costs. However, hospitals do not seem to utilize horizontal collaborative purchasing on any large scale, and recent initiatives have had mixed results. Focusing on Dutch hospitals, in this paper we present major impediments for collaborative purchasing, resulting in a first component of our proposed electronic horizontal collaborative purchasing model for hospitals; as a second component it contains a collaborative purchasing typology. A first validation round with hospital purchasing professionals, described separately in Kusters and Versendaal (2011), confirmed four applicable …

Top Management Support, Collective Mindfulness, And Information Systems Performance, Shaji A. Khan, Albert L. Lederer, Dinesh A. Mirchandani Nov 2013

Top Management Support, Collective Mindfulness, And Information Systems Performance, Shaji A. Khan, Albert L. Lederer, Dinesh A. Mirchandani

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Mindfulness is a cognitive process that facilitates the discovery and correction of errors that might escalate. This study applies mindfulness theory to examine the impact of top management support for information systems on collective mindfulness, and that of collective mindfulness on IS performance. It treated such mindfulness in five dimensions, and top management support and IS performance as uni-dimensional. Forty-seven chief executive officers responded to a survey asking their perceptions of the constructs. Top management support predicted four of the dimensions with the strongest effect on sensitivity to IS operations. A negative path from support to commitment to IS resilience …
