Household Wealth And Neurocognitive Development Disparities Among School-Aged Children In Nepal., Shivani A Patel, Laura E Murray-Kolb, Steven C Leclerq, Subarna K Khatry, James M. Tielsch, Joanne Katz, Parul Christian

Global Health Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Wealth disparities in child developmental outcomes are well documented in developed countries. We sought to (1) describe the extent of wealth-based neurocognitive development disparities and (2) examine potential mediating factors of disparities among a population-based cohort of children in rural Nepal.

METHODS: We investigated household wealth-based differences in intellectual, executive and motor function of n = 1692 children aged between 7 and 9 years in Nepal. Using linear mixed models, wealth-based differences were estimated before and after controlling for child and household demographic characteristics. We further examined wealth-based differences adjusted for three sets of mediators: child nutritional status, home …

An Assessment Of Permanent And Nonpermanent Plots In Riparian Vegetation Monitoring, Karin M. Kettenring, Caroline M. Laine, Brett B. Roper Nov 2013

An Assessment Of Permanent And Nonpermanent Plots In Riparian Vegetation Monitoring, Karin M. Kettenring, Caroline M. Laine, Brett B. Roper

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The aim of this research was to determine whether permanent and nonpermanent plots for describing riparian plant communities would yield the same results. This research was conducted at 4 streams in central eastern Idaho. Permanent and nonpermanent greenline plots (first perennial vegetation adjacent to stream) were sampled repeatedly from June to October 2010, and we assessed differences between plot types by comparing species richness, wetland indicator rating, and percent cover of live vegetation, forbs, graminoids, litter/moss, and bare ground. We found few statistically significant differences between permanent and nonpermanent greenline plots. Because both types of plots yielded similar results, we …

The Undesireables Of 'Les Intouchables': A Feminist Critique Of The French Blockbuster, Bendi Benson Schrambach Nov 2013

The Undesireables Of 'Les Intouchables': A Feminist Critique Of The French Blockbuster, Bendi Benson Schrambach

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

'Les Intouchables' by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache was an extremely popular 2011 French film. Based on a true story, it relates the unexpected friendship of two 'untouchable' members of society: one minority criminal from the housing projects and one handicapped aristocrat. Touting such values as tolerance, respect and determination, the film melted the hearts of millions both in France and overseas to become the second most viewed French film of all time.

The present study will undertake a feminist critique of this film based on its portrayal of women. Pursuing the first variety of feminist criticism outlined by Elaine …

Intrinsically Ties Adjusted Non-Parametric Method For The Analysis Of Two Sampled Data, G. U. Ebuh, I. C. A Oyeka Nov 2013

Intrinsically Ties Adjusted Non-Parametric Method For The Analysis Of Two Sampled Data, G. U. Ebuh, I. C. A Oyeka

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A non-parametric method for the analysis of two sample data is proposed that intrinsically and structurally adjusts the test statistic for the possible presence of tied observations between the sampled populations, thereby obviating the need to require the populations to be continuous. The populations may be measurements on as low as the ordinal scale, and need not be homogeneous. In cases where the null hypotheses are rejected, the test statistic enables the determination of which of the sampled populations is likely to be responsible for the rejection (a determination which the Wilcoxon Mann Whitney test cannot handle). The proposed method …

Robust Regression Estimators When There Are Tied Values, Rand R. Wilcox, Florence Clark Nov 2013

Robust Regression Estimators When There Are Tied Values, Rand R. Wilcox, Florence Clark

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

It is well known that when using the ordinary least squares regression estimator, outliers among the dependent variable can result in relatively poor power. Many robust regression estimators have been derived that address this problem, but the bulk of the results assume that the dependent variable is continuous. It is demonstrated that when there are tied values, several robust regression estimators can perform poorly in terms of controlling the Type I error probability, even with a large sample size. The presence of tied values does not necessarily mean that they perform poorly, but there is the issue of whether there …

Testing The Assumption Of Non-Differential Misclassification In Case-Control Studies, Tze-San Lee, Qin Hui Nov 2013

Testing The Assumption Of Non-Differential Misclassification In Case-Control Studies, Tze-San Lee, Qin Hui

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

One of the not yet solved issues regarding the misclassification in case-control studies is whether the misclassification rates are the same for both cases and controls. Currently, a common practice is to assume that the rates are the same, that is, the non-differential misclassification assumption. However, it has been suspected that this assumption may not be valid in practical applications. Unfortunately, no test is available so far to test the validity of the non-differential misclassification assumption. A method is presented to test the validity of non-differential misclassification assumption in case-control studies with 2 × 2 tables when validation data are …

Ordered Logit Regression Modeling Of The Self-Rated Health In Hawai‘I, With Comparisons To The Ols Model, Hosik Min Nov 2013

Ordered Logit Regression Modeling Of The Self-Rated Health In Hawai‘I, With Comparisons To The Ols Model, Hosik Min

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Despite the ordinal nature of Self-Rated Health (SRH) variable, logistic regression models or regression models have been used without adequate justification for these applications. It is shown that ordered-logit regression model is the appropriate statistical strategy to estimate SRH, whereas the Ordinary LeastSquares model leads to biased conclusions.

A Satisfaction Evaluation Method For Scenic Spot Based On Linguistic Weighted Arithmetic Average Operator, Mingming Hu, Peiyu Ren, Maozhu Jin, Jibin Lan, Yuyan Luo Nov 2013

A Satisfaction Evaluation Method For Scenic Spot Based On Linguistic Weighted Arithmetic Average Operator, Mingming Hu, Peiyu Ren, Maozhu Jin, Jibin Lan, Yuyan Luo

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Based on the level empowerment system and the linguistic operator, a satisfaction evaluation process is proposed in this paper. First of all, a level empowerment system is established to generate the weight of each surveyed tourist. Then, some new linguistic operations are defined which can remedy the defects of the existed operations. Besides, the expectation and variance in linguistic information environment are defined to generate the weight of each character of tourist and the weights of indicators, and linguistic weighted arithmetic average (LWAA) operator is introduced to aggregate the linguistic information of each tourist and the group linguistic information of …

Music At The End Of Life: Bringing Comfort And Saying Goodbye Through Song And Story, Amy Clements-Cortés

Music Faculty Publications

Music has been an important part of the human existence across all continents and cultures since the beginning of recorded time. It is used, for example, in the celebration of happy events, for religious rituals, and to acknowledge the death of loved ones, often as part of spiritual and symbolic rituals. Although the formal and structured use of music as a component of care for individuals in end-of-life palliative care and hospice systems is relatively new in the world of contemporary medicine, its use is growing rapidly and is appreciated by both those providing the music and those receiving the …

Body Esteem, Peer Difficulties, And Perceptions Of Physical Health In Overweight And Obese Urban Children Ages 5 To 7 Years, Natalie A. Williams, Jennifer Fournier, Mace Coday, Phyllis A. Richey, Frances A. Tylavsky, Marion E. Hare

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Objective—To determine whether there is an association between body mass index (BMI) and body esteem in young overweight and obese urban children, and to test peer relationship difficulties and perceived physical health as mediators of this relationship.

Methods—Child self-reported body esteem, and parent-reported child peer relationship difficulties (being bullied by peers and peer rejection) and physical health perceptions were obtained from 218 overweight and obese children ages 5–7 years (81% racial/ethnic minority, M BMI = 25.3) and their primary caregivers.

Results—Higher BMI was associated with lower body esteem for both girls and boys. This relation was mediated …

Transitional Justice: Prioritizing Truth Commissions Or International Tribunals To Ensure Healing And Reconciliation, Jlateh Vincent Jappah, Danielle Taana Smith Nov 2013

Transitional Justice: Prioritizing Truth Commissions Or International Tribunals To Ensure Healing And Reconciliation, Jlateh Vincent Jappah, Danielle Taana Smith

Journal of International and Global Studies

There is a recent increased examination of the effects of international funding for truth commissions and criminal tribunals in post-conflict societies as they transition to peace. The discourse on whether to prioritize truth commissions or international criminal tribunals and which form of transitional justice more effectively fosters healing and reconciliation continues to be highly polemical. This paper explores whether, in terms of post-conflict healing and reconciliation, international funding would be better spent on truth commissions than on international criminal tribunals or vice versa. It examines the complexities and heterogeneity of transitional societies and suggests that international funding for transitional justice …

Developing Paradise: Tourism, The Local Community, And Nature In Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic, John Ripton Ph.D. Nov 2013

Developing Paradise: Tourism, The Local Community, And Nature In Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic, John Ripton Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Las Terrenas, a town in the Samanà province of the Dominican Republic, has experienced phenomenal growth of its tourist industry. Electricity only arrived in Las Terrenas in the late 1990s, yet today, more than 70 hotels and other establishments offer thousands of rooms in tourist accommodations. In little more than two decades, the population of Las Terrenas has mushroomed from a few hundred to nearly 20,000. While the forces of commercial development integrate Las Terrenas into the global economy, its municipal infrastructure simply has not kept pace. The national government finances the construction of roads and other projects to promote …

Transnational Policy Networks In Global Water Governance In India, Vandana Asthana Ph.D. Nov 2013

Transnational Policy Networks In Global Water Governance In India, Vandana Asthana Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper argues that in the processes of global water governance, transnational policy networks play a significant role in defining spaces of engagement that privilege certain voices and versions. These networks produce narratives that not only convey storylines of sustainable water practices but also often have embedded within them the advocacy of a particular policy instrument that they intend to promote. What appears as knowledge is often structured towards the goal at which it is directed. Using application of private sector participation in water as an example from India, the paper explores how these power/knowledge regimes are established and supported …

Psychology Faculty Publications

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and impulsivity/hyperactivity and is estimated to affect 3% to 7% of the school population (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). In the majority of cases the disorder persists into adolescence and adulthood (Barkley, Murphy, & Fischer, 2008; Simon, Czobor, Bálint, Mészáros & Bitter, 2009). Although many studies have reported on the relationship between ADHD and younger children, there are fewer studies examining this with older participants. Recent research indicates that increasing numbers of high school students with ADHD are pursuing college (Wolf, Simkowitz, & Carlson, 2009). While the exact rates of …

Taking Charge 2013 A Study Of The Strategic Budgeting Priorities Of The Residents Of Lincoln, Nebraska, Lisa M. Pytlikzillig, Ryan Anderson, Alan J. Tomkins

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

This report presents the results of the 2013 Taking Charge initiative sponsored by the City of Lincoln. This was the sixth year of Taking Charge activities, and included an online survey and a half-day, face-to-face, Community Conversation. Unlike previous Taking Charge activities, which focused narrowly on the immediate concerns of an impending budget proposal (e.g. which specific programs should be funded or discontinued to maintain a balanced budget), this year’s efforts focused more broadly on strategic planning for the City’s future budget policy priorities.

A number of important findings were identified from an examination of more than 1,100 completed online …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

A region on bovine chromosome 6 has been implicated in cattle birth weight, growth, and length. Non-SMC conodensin I complex subunit G (NCAPG) and ligand dependent nuclear receptor corepressor-like protein (LCORL) are positional candidate genes within this region. Previously identified genetic markers in both genes were associated with average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) in a crossbred population of beef steers. These markers were also associated with hot carcass weight, ribeye area and adjusted fat thickness suggesting that they may have a role in lean muscle growth and/or fat deposition. The purpose …
