Determinants Of Active Ageing In Zambia, Christopher C. Mapoma, Andrew Banda
Determinants Of Active Ageing In Zambia, Christopher C. Mapoma, Andrew Banda
Zambia Social Science Journal
This article investigated determinants of active ageing proposed by the WHO 2002 Active Ageing Framework using data from a developing country -‐ Zambia. Up to date, there is little or no evidence of studies conducted to answer whether or not determinants proposed by the Active Ageing Framework of 2002 apply to developing countries like Zambia. This article set out to (1) explore which of the determinants of active ageing apply to Africa and Zambia in particular and (2) the influence of HIV/AIDS on active ageing in general. A non-‐experimental cross-‐sectional research design was used to collect data for this article. …

One-Day Treatment Of Small Molecule 8-Bromo-Cyclic Amp Analogue Induces Cell-Based Vegf Production For In Vitro Angiogenesis And Osteoblastic Differentiation, Kevin W.-H. Lo, Ho Man Kan, Keith A. Gagnon, Cato T. Laurencin
UCHC Articles - Research
Small molecule based regenerative engineering is emerging as a promising strategy for regenerating bone tissue. Small molecule cAMP analogues have been proposed as novel biofactors for bone repair and regeneration, and while promising, the effect that these small molecules have on angiogenesis, a critical requirement for successful bone regeneration, is still unclear. Our previous research demonstrated that the small molecule cAMP analogue 8-bromoadenosine-3’,5’-cyclic monophosphate (8-Br-cAMP) was able to promote initial osteoblast adhesion on a polymeric scaffold via cAMP signaling cascades. Here, we report that 8-Br-cAMP is capable of inducing in vitro cell-based VEGF production for angiogenesis promotion. We first demonstrated …

Caring For An Infant With Trisomy 18: A Case Study And Guidelines, Deborah Bruns
Caring For An Infant With Trisomy 18: A Case Study And Guidelines, Deborah Bruns
Publications
Much of the literature describes the prognosis for infants with full trisomy 18 as bleak. The case study offered here provides an overview of an infant with this diagnosis who lived for 88.5 days in a Level III neonatal intensive care unit. Care decisions (medical and basic care) and their outcomes are described along with implications for care for infants with a diagnosis often characterized as incompatible with life. The need for information about treatment options and collaboration among an infant’s medical team is emphasized.

The Power Of Politics For Zambia’S Public Sector Unions: A Case Study Of The 2013 Nursing Strikes, Andrew Stawasz, Thaddeus Talbot
Zambia Social Science Journal
Recent pay reform efforts in Zambia have sought to generate more competitive wages and benefits for workers in the public sector. However, these efforts have been characterised by inconsistent policy decisions during wage negotiations. Such decisions produce distortions in the pay structure that result in industrial unrest from unions in the public sector. Previous literature has not examined how public sector unions influence these outcomes in Zambia. This article examines factors that affect public sector unions’ influence in Zambia. Seven factors were identified after analysing the 2013 wage negotiations and subsequent nurses’ strikes at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) as …

Agricultural Productivity And Poverty Reduction In Nepal, Satis Devkota, Mukti Upadhyay
Agricultural Productivity And Poverty Reduction In Nepal, Satis Devkota, Mukti Upadhyay
Economics & Management Publications
This paper provides for the first time a clear quantitative link between agricultural productivity and poverty among rural households in Nepal. Using data from a nationwide Nepal Living Standard Survey 2004, we first estimate household-specific productivity per worker under both Cobb–Douglas and translog production functions. Second, the paper identifies the determinants of productivity. Third, we explore a theoretical link between productivity and poverty using Sen's poverty index and find empirically that productivity growth substantially helps poverty reduction. Finally, the integrated effects of changes in productivity determinants are found to be stronger than the outcomes of sectoral policies taken in isolation.

Report Of Tennessee Births 2012, Tennessee. Department Of Health, Division Of Policy, Planning And Assessment, Office Of Health Statistics
Tennessee Births
Report of Tennessee Births 2012 provides information on final birth data for state residents. Resident data include events that occurred to residents of Tennessee irrespective of where the events took place. Birth certificates filed with the Tennessee Department of Health, Office of Vital Records supplied the data for this report. Tennessee’s total birth trend indicates a gradual decline since the late 1940s when the rates were at record highs.
