Acid Ceramidase Promotes Akt Activation And Nuclear Export Of Pten Through S1p Signaling, Thomas Hendrix Beckham
Acid Ceramidase Promotes Akt Activation And Nuclear Export Of Pten Through S1p Signaling, Thomas Hendrix Beckham
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Prostate cancer is a leading cause of cancer and cancer-related mortality in males in the United States. Acid ceramidase is frequently overexpressed in prostate cancer and catalyzes the deacylation of proapoptotic ceramide into sphingosine. Sphingosine is converted by sphingosine kinases into sphingosine 1-phosphate, which promotes numerous pro-cancer phenotypes. Due to the frequent overexpression of acid ceramidase in prostate cancer and its net cancer promoting signaling effects achieved by reducing ceramide and generating sphingosine 1-phosphate, the impact of acid ceramidase, and the lipid profiles it alters, on prostate cancer cell signaling were studied. Here we report the activation of the oncogeneic …

Flourine-18 fluoro-2-deoxy-glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT) is a useful test for the management of malignant conditions. Inflammatory and infectious processes, however, can cause increased uptake on PET scanning, often causing diagnostic dilemmas. This knowledge is important to the rheumatologist not only because of the inflammatory conditions we treat but also because certain rheumatic diseases impose an increased risk of malignancy either due to the disease itself or as a consequence of medications used to treat the rheumatic diseases. There is an increasing body of evidence investigating the role of PET scans in inflammatory …
The Intricacy Of Death And Destiny, Christopher Rogers
The Intricacy Of Death And Destiny, Christopher Rogers
PTRS Undergraduate Publications
It is our eternal shadow and our ultimate judge. It is our shared destiny and greatest fear; death. The conceptualization of death has always been a fascination of man; we have forever explored it, pondered it, dissected it, but never conquered it. We know how to live, but yet very few of us know how to die.
Two of the most brilliant explorations of this dynamic are vastly different yet inherently important works. The genius of both George Orwell’s political satire 1984, and Albert Camus’ The Plague is their accessibility to the imagination regarding dying, the authors ability to …

Horizon Content Knowledge In The Work Of Teaching: A Focus On Planning, Nick Wasserman, Julianna Connelly Stockton
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Horizon content knowledge, one component of Ball et al.’s mathematical knowledge for teaching framework (e.g., Ball, Thames, & Phelps, 2008), has yet to reach adequate clarity and consensus in the field. Recently, various scholars have worked to further conceptualize and describe the mathematical horizon (e.g., Jakobsen, Thames & Ribeiro, 2013; Figueiras et al., 2011; Zazkis & Mamolo, 2011). In this communication, we identify some limitations in the ways such knowledge has thus far been described and offer an additional form of potential impact of horizon content knowledge on the work of teaching.

Transhumanism And Society: The Social Debate Over Human Enhancement, Stephen J. Lilley
Sociology Faculty Publications
This book provides an introductory overview to the social debate over enhancement technologies with an overview of the transhumanists' call to bypass human nature and conservationists' argument in defense of it. The author present this controversy as it unfolds in the contest between transhumanists proponents and conservationists, who push back with an argument to conserve human nature and to ban enhancement technologies.
Readers are informed about the discussion over humanism, the tension between science and religion, and the interpretation of socio-technological revolutions; and are invited to make up their own mind about one of the most challenging topics concerning the …

Prospects And Practices For Crpd Implementation In Africa, Janet E. Lord, Michael Ashley Stein
Prospects And Practices For Crpd Implementation In Africa, Janet E. Lord, Michael Ashley Stein
Book Chapters
African states strongly embraced the adoption of the CRPD, along with its Optional Protocol. The Working Group that developed the foundational text of the treaty included delegations from seven African nations. Likewise, the lone seat allocated within the Working Group to represent national human rights institutions was held by a South African Human Rights Commissioner. Sixteen African countries signed the CRPD on the first day it opened for signature, and 34 have ratified it, contributing to a rapid entry into force. In addition, 18 African states are party to the Optional Protocol to the CRPD, thereby assenting to its complaint …

Globalization And Sovereignty, Julian G. Ku, John Yoo
Globalization And Sovereignty, Julian G. Ku, John Yoo
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Globalization represents the reality that we live in a time when the walls of sovereignty are no protection against the movements of capital, labor, information and ideas-nor can they provide effective protection against harm and damage.
This declaration by Judge Rosalyn Higgins, the former President of the International Court of Justice, represents the conventional wisdom about the future of global governance. Many view globalization as a reality that will erode or even eliminate the sovereignty of nation-states.
The typical account points to at least three ways that globalization has affected sovereignty. First, the rise of international trade and capital markets …

This article traces the origins of the casebook classroom, the medical school teaching hospital, and the architectural school design studio. These parallel histories show how and why legal education diverged from norms being established in the other two fields. The divergence left legal education stronger within universities than it otherwise might have been. But it also left legal education insulated from its own profession and, to that extent, diminished intellectually.
Uniquely among the professions, law schools use a required curriculum has changed little since 1870. Medical and architecture schools are built around settings where those professions are practiced: teaching hospitals …

Using Gis To Delineate Headwater Stream Origins In The Appalachian Coal-Belt Region Of Kentucky, Jonathan A. Villines
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
Human activity such as surface mining can have substantial impacts on the natural environment. Performing a Cumulative Hydrologic Impact Assessment (CHIA) of such impacts on surface water systems requires knowing the location and extent of these impacted streams. The Jurisdictional Determination (JD) of a stream’s protected status under the Clean Water Act (CWA) involves locating and classifying streams according to their flow regime: ephemeral, intermittent, or perennial. Due to their often remote locations and small size, taking a field inventory of headwater streams for surface mining permit applications or permit reviews is challenging. A means of estimating headwater stream location …

Twelve autosomal dinucleotide repeat loci were analyzed in chimpanzees genomes by DNA amplification using primers designed for analysis of human loci. The markers span the entire length of human chromosomes 21 and 22. Nine markers were polymorphic in chimpanzee as well, with a somewhat comparable level of polymorphism and allele size range. Even in the presence of very limited information and in spite of missing samples, it was possible to reconstruct a complex pedigree and to provide molecular data that corroborate family relationships that were deduced from cage history and behavioral data. The conclusions were further supported by mitochondrial DNA …

Mothers' Reponses To Infant Gesture At 17 Months, Carly Seibel
Mothers' Reponses To Infant Gesture At 17 Months, Carly Seibel
Honors Capstones
Mothers' responses to infants' gestures are proposed as a mechanism for vocabulary acquisition. It is known that at 13 months mothers give more object labels to pointing than object extensions at a time when infants are learning object labels. However, it is not known how mothers respond to infants' gestures at 17 months when their vocabularies are expanding to include a greater variety of word types. Therefore, the current study examined mothers' responses to three types of infant gestures: points, open-hand reaches, and object extensions at 17 months to describe maternal provision of object labels, action labels, internal state labels …

The development of phonological awareness and reading comprehension skills is an important progression in reading acquisition. In this study, an analysis was used to examine the efficacy of an after-school reading program for 29 children who participated in the program. There were 14 first graders who received between 0 and .98 hours of intervention while another group of 15 first graders received between 1.17 and 2.30 hours of additional support. After an Analysis of Variance test, first group of students who received minimal intervention scored better than the students who received the most support. Despite the amount of services provided, …
Automated Brewing Process, Joshua Berger
Automated Brewing Process, Joshua Berger

There are few automated gas control systems that incorporate anything more than proportional control. This thesis will look at the process of making beer at home with a three kettle setup, the possible parts that would need to be incorporated in the system to allow proportional integral derivative control, and how the control theory may work. The research required will look into the basics of control laws. A design hurdle that will need to be met is a control valve that is within the weekend home brewers price range. With a truly robust control system, a home brewer would save …

The field of education is one that endeavors constant change of fluctuating degrees. Most recently and drastically, the educational field has experienced and responded to changes in the cultural and linguistic diversity that is rapidly increasing in classrooms across the United States. Congruently, current legislation holds both educators and students accountable for their standardized performance and accomplishments, although teachers of ethnically diverse students are not required to be certified in the teaching of these learners. As a result, it was the purpose of this study to identify and analyze the themes evident from a series of observations and interviews conducted …

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
Mobile computing has exploded around the world over the past several years. Morgan Stanley suggests that mobile Internet use will exceed the use from fixed devices, and Ericsson projects that 80 percent of people will access the web from a mobile device by 2015 (Ingram 2010; Ericsson Corporate Public & Media Relations 2010). Mobile devices are being used for content creation, communication, information seeking, and so much more. The notion that mobile devices would be used only for quick and simple tasks has been challenged by research showing that a growing portion of the population—especially low-income and minority mobile users—use …

Kalkidan ('Promise'): Addressing Marital Transmission Of Hiv In Ethiopia, Banchiamlack Dessalegn, Annabel Erulkar
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This program brief describes a Population Council initiative in three low-income areas of Ethiopia. Kalkidan (Amharic for “Promise”) is a three-year program designed to increase discussion and information-sharing on HIV and related topics between marital partners; to promote HIV prevention and health service utilization within marriage, including prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV; and to build husbands’ support of their wives, as well as investment in their health and that of their children. Kalkidan recruits and trains community-based mentors to lead parallel discussion groups of husbands and wives, who periodically come together for joint sessions. The Population Council is …
