Federal Immigration Detainers After Arizona V. United States, Christopher N. Lasch Nov 2013

Federal Immigration Detainers After Arizona V. United States, Christopher N. Lasch

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In Arizona v. United States, the Supreme Court held that three of the four challenged provisions to Arizona’s “Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act” were preempted. The Court reached this conclusion by focusing on the federal government’s supremacy in immigration enforcement. Ironically, the Court’s focus on federal supremacy undermines the executive branch’s central enforcement measure for obtaining custody of suspected immigration violators: immigration detainers.

The executive branch issues over a quarter million immigration detainers each year to state and local law officials. These detainers command state and local officials to hold a prisoner, who would otherwise be released, …

Evidence For Finely-Regulated Asynchronous Growth Of Toxoplasma Gondii Cysts Based On Data-Driven Model Selection, Adam M. Sullivan, Xiaopeng Zhao, Yasuhiro Suzuki, Eri Ochiai, Stephen Crutcher, Michael A. Gilchrist

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Toxoplasma gondii establishes a chronic infection by forming cysts preferentially in the brain. This chronic infection is one of the most common parasitic infections in humans and can be reactivated to develop life-threatening toxoplasmic encephalitis in immunocompromised patients. Host-pathogen interactions during the chronic infection include growth of the cysts and their removal by both natural rupture and elimination by the immune system. Analyzing these interactions is important for understanding the pathogenesis of this common infection. We developed a differential equation framework of cyst growth and employed Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) to determine the growth and removal functions that best describe …

Acceptance Of Disability And Its Predictors Among Stroke Patients In Taiwan, Shan-Yun Chiu, Hanoch Livneh, Long-Lung Tsao, Tzung-Yi Tsai

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Modern medicine has increased the survival rate for stroke patients; however, the patient’s psychosocial adaptation after stroke onset may be related to the clinical outcomes. This study aimed to investigate patients’ acceptance of disability (AOD) and its predictors in stroke patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study used a purposive sampling method to recruit 175 stroke patients from a hospital in southern Taiwan. A structured questionnaire gathered data on respondent demographics and disease characteristics, and included the Chinese version of the AOD Scale-Revised. Factors associated with AOD were examined by a multiple linear regression analysis. Results: The mean AOD score was …

Analysis Of Sry Duplications On The Rattus Norvegicus Y-Chromosome, Jeremy W. Prokop, Adam C. Underwood, Monte E. Turner, Nic Miller, Dawn Pietzrak, Sarah Scott, Chris Smith, Amy Milsted Nov 2013

Analysis Of Sry Duplications On The Rattus Norvegicus Y-Chromosome, Jeremy W. Prokop, Adam C. Underwood, Monte E. Turner, Nic Miller, Dawn Pietzrak, Sarah Scott, Chris Smith, Amy Milsted

Biology Faculty Research

Background: Gene copy number variation plays a large role in the evolution of genomes. In Rattus norvegicus and other rodent species, the Y-chromosome has accumulated multiple copies of Sry loci. These copy number variations have been previously linked with changes in phenotype of animal models such as the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). This study characterizes the Y-chromosome in the Sry region of Rattus norvegicus, while addressing functional variations seen in the Sry protein products. Results: Eleven Sry loci have been identified in the SHR with one (nonHMG Sry) containing a frame shift mutation. The nonHMGSry is found and conserved in …

Interictal Neurocognitive Processing Of Visual Stimuli In Migraine: Evidence From Event-Related Potentials, Marla J. S Mickleborough, Christine M. Chapman, Andreea Simina Toma, Jeremy H. M Chan, Grace Truong, Todd C. Handy Nov 2013

Interictal Neurocognitive Processing Of Visual Stimuli In Migraine: Evidence From Event-Related Potentials, Marla J. S Mickleborough, Christine M. Chapman, Andreea Simina Toma, Jeremy H. M Chan, Grace Truong, Todd C. Handy

Dartmouth Scholarship

Research has established decreased sensory habituation as a defining feature in migraine, while decreased cognitive habituation has only been found with regard to cognitive assessment of the relative probability of the occurrence of a stimulus event. Our study extended the investigation of interictal habituation in migraine to include cognitive processing when viewing of a series of visually-complex images, similar to those we encounter on the internet everyday. We examined interictal neurocognitive function in migraine from a habituation perspective, using a novel paradigm designed to assess how the response to a series of images changes over time. Two groups of participants--migraineurs …

Safeguarding Federalism By Saving Health Reform: Implications Of National Federation Of Independent Business V. Sebelius, Brietta Clark Nov 2013

Safeguarding Federalism By Saving Health Reform: Implications Of National Federation Of Independent Business V. Sebelius, Brietta Clark

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

On June 28, 2012, the Supreme Court issued one of its most anticipated decisions in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (“NFIB”)—the constitutional challenge to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“ACA”). The ACA is President Obama’s signature accomplishment and creates a number of reforms intended to reduce cost, improve the quality of healthcare and health outcomes, and expand access to care. The main pillars of the ACA are the expansions of public and private insurance coverage. These expansions were the targets of a number of legal challenges by states, private individuals, and various organizations, with two reaching …

Creating Interactive Facilities Management Capabilities Through Building Information Modelling As A Tool For Managing The Irish Public Sector Estates, Barry Mcauley, Alan V. Hore, Roger West, Deborah Rowland

Conference papers

The Irish Government manages estates that are faced with increased pressure on their greenhouse gas emissions, as well as, poorly managed assets that leave it increasingly difficult for an effective Facilities Management (FM) process to be operated. The FM processes represents the most costly stage in the life-cycle of a building and must now take priority in the design process, as the operating and maintenance costs can be up to five times the capital costs, with the business operating costs reaching up to two hundred times the capital costs over the life of the building. In order for Ireland to …

Public / Private Bim: An Irish Perspective, Barry Mcauley, Alan V. Hore, John Deeney

Conference papers

The current economic difficulties have affected most practitioners within the industry and, as a result, many firms and contractors are bidding for fewer projects, resulting in below-cost tenders. It is clear that, many firms and contractors are now operating on thin margins; which makes it increasingly difficult for them to commit to the introduction of new software applications and system upgrades. The transition to Building Information Modelling (BIM) from traditional 2D CAD by Irish firms and contractors has been a relatively slow process compared with our international colleagues. There are many reasons for this, including lack of resources, lack of …
