Analysis Of Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla) Specific Alu Repeats, Adam T. Mclain, Glenn W. Carman, Mitchell L. Fullerton, Thomas O. Beckstrom, William Gensler, Thomas J. Meyer, Christopher Faulk, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Background: Research into great ape genomes has revealed widely divergent activity levels over time for Alu elements. However, the diversity of this mobile element family in the genome of the western lowland gorilla has previously been uncharacterized. Alu elements are primate-specific short interspersed elements that have been used as phylogenetic and population genetic markers for more than two decades. Alu elements are present at high copy number in the genomes of all primates surveyed thus far. The AluY subfamily and its derivatives have been recognized as the evolutionarily youngest Alu subfamily in the Old World primate lineage. Results: Here we …

Comparative Genome Analysis Of Ciprofloxacin-Resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Reveals Genes Within Newly Identified High Variability Regions Associated With Drug Resistance Development, Hsun-Cheng Su, Jainab Khatun, Dona M. Kanavy, Morgan C. Giddings Nov 2013

Comparative Genome Analysis Of Ciprofloxacin-Resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Reveals Genes Within Newly Identified High Variability Regions Associated With Drug Resistance Development, Hsun-Cheng Su, Jainab Khatun, Dona M. Kanavy, Morgan C. Giddings

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The alarming rise of ciprofloxacin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been reported in several clinical studies. Though the mutation of resistance genes and their role in drug resistance has been researched, the process by which the bacterium acquires high-level resistance is still not well understood. How does the genomic evolution of P. aeruginosa affect resistance development? Could the exposure of antibiotics to the bacteria enrich genomic variants that lead to the development of resistance, and if so, how are these variants distributed through the genome? To answer these questions, we performed 454 pyrosequencing and a whole genome analysis both before and after …

Work Hope And The Socioemotional Functioning Of Offenders, David Guion Nov 2013

Work Hope And The Socioemotional Functioning Of Offenders, David Guion

Theses and Dissertations

For offenders returning to society at record levels, securing work looms as one of the most crucial factors in successful reentry. Work hope is a construct that seeks to measure the relative presence of goals of securing desired work, thoughts about how to achieve those goals, and agency to achieve those goals, even in the presence of obstacles. This study sought to examine relationships among work hope, the socioemotional variables of attachment, emotion regulation, physical, relational, and workplace victimization, and coping, and the career-related variables of perceptions of career-related barriers and complexity level of career goals. Identification Of Human Pgc-1Α-B Isoforms Using A Novel Pgc-1Α-B Specific Antibody, Shannon Hedrick Nov 2013

Identification Of Human Pgc-1Α-B Isoforms Using A Novel Pgc-1Α-B Specific Antibody, Shannon Hedrick

Theses and Dissertations

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α) is known as the master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis. PGC-1α holds this role by acting as a transcriptional coactivator for an array of transcription factors and nuclear hormone receptors, such as NRF-1/2 and ERRα/γ, whose downstream targets function in mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative phosphorylation. PGC-1α is regulated both at the transcriptional and post-translational level in several signaling pathways, including p38 MAPK and AMPK. This regulation affects which transcription factor binding events can occur in a given tissue, and thus affects regulation of PGC-1α target genes. PGC-1α is downregulated in many neurodegenerative disorders as …

Research Brief: "Soldiers To Citizens: The Link Between Military Service And Volunteering", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This research examines the relationship between military service and political engagement, such as voting and volunteering. This study found that older and married veterans were more likely to volunteer than their younger and unmarried counterparts, and therefore veterans who are suffering from depression or loss of purpose might benefit from programs that encourage volunteering. Future research should further investigate the links between individual socioeconomic characteristics, family, social support, and engagement in volunteer work.
