Experimental Determination And Equation Of State Modeling Of High-Pressure Fluid Behavior, Yue Wu
Experimental Determination And Equation Of State Modeling Of High-Pressure Fluid Behavior, Yue Wu
Theses and Dissertations
High-pressure solution behavior such as density and phase behavior is a critical fundamental property for the design and optimization of various chemical processes, such as distillation and extraction in the production and purification of oils, polymers, and other natural materials. In this PhD study, solution behavior data are experimentally determined and equation of state (EoS) modeled for n-hexadecane, n-octadecane, n-eicosane, methylcyclohexane, ethylcyclohexane, cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane, cis-1,4-dimethylcyclohexane, trans-1,4-dimethylcyclohexane, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, and 2-methylnaphthalene at temperatures to 525 K and pressures to 275 MPa. A variable-volume view cell coupled with a linear variable differential transformer is used for the high-pressure determination. The reported density …

X-Linked Mtmr8 Diversity And Evolutionary History Of Sub-Saharan Populations, Damian Labuda, Vania Yotova, Jean-François Lefebvre, Claudia Moreau, Gerd Utermann, Scott M. Williams
Dartmouth Scholarship
The genetic diversity within an 11 kb segment of the MTMR8 gene in a sample of 111 sub-Saharan and 49 non-African X chromosomes was investigated to assess the early evolutionary history of sub-Saharan Africans and the out-of-Africa expansion. The analyses revealed a complex genetic structure of the Africans that contributed to the emergence of modern humans. We observed partitioning of two thirds of old lineages among southern, west/central and east African populations indicating ancient population stratification predating the out of Africa migration. Age estimates of these lineages, older than coalescence times of uniparentally inherited markers, raise the question whether contemporary …

Me And Goldilocks...Searching For What Is “Just Right” In Trauma Research: An Autoethnography, Rosemary C. Reilly
The Qualitative Report
This is a reflexive account of the tensions and dilemmas emerging from my experience as a woman qualitative researcher researching trauma and tragedy in communities. Framed as an autoethnography, using my conflictual childhood feelings about Goldilocks as an overarching metaphor, I will weave fairy tale and experience into an examination of the impact I can have on individuals, families, and communities in the course in pursuing research. I will attempt to highlight the edges of research culture and ethical conduct, the politics of trespass and the rights of individuals and communities while trying to discover what is “just right.”
Project 10:13, Julianna Farias
Project 10:13, Julianna Farias
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Project 10:13 ultimately aims to fix the nation's drug problem and eventually change the country's legal structure regarding drug crimes. At this rate this trend is increasing, something must be done to slow down the acceleration of the problem. To do so, Project 10:13 will start with San Antonio, TX. One of the reasons for starting project 10:13 is my first-hand experience with the damage caused by drug abuse. My older sister, now 28, suffered from an addiction to drugs from the age of 16 to the age of 24. For my family and I, those eight years are indescribable. …
Sirt6 And Premature Aging Of Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome Fibroblasts., Helal Endisha
Sirt6 And Premature Aging Of Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome Fibroblasts., Helal Endisha
Theses and Dissertations
The genetic disease Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) arises from a de novo single nucleotide mutation (1824CàT) in the LMNA gene. As a result, the mutated lamin A protein (progerin) remains farnesylated and permanently attached to the nuclear membrane. Progerin accumulates and deforms the nuclear membrane leading to an array of cellular abnormalities driving the cells to enter a state of permanent cell-cycle arrest early on in replicative age i.e. premature cellular senescence. Cellular senescence has been extensively studied as one of the contributing factors to aging in HGPS patients and other age-related diseases. There has also been evidence to show …
Analysis Of Plasminogen Binding To Treponema Denticola, A Key Periopathogen, Brittney Tegels
Analysis Of Plasminogen Binding To Treponema Denticola, A Key Periopathogen, Brittney Tegels
Theses and Dissertations
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects over 116 million adults in the United States. A shift in the normal microflora occurs as periodontal disease develops resulting in a larger number of Gram-negative anaerobes and spirochetes. An increase in the oral spirochete, Treponema denticola, is highly correlated with periodontal disease progression and severity. The ability of this periopathogen to thrive in the subgingival crevice is dependent on complement evasion mechanisms. Earlier analyses demonstrated that the primary mechanism of T. denticola serum resistance is binding of the human complement regulatory protein, Factor H (FH), to the factor H-binding protein (FhbB). …

Factors Influencing Vaccination Decisions In African American Mothers Of Preschool Age Children, Chauntel Mckenzie Mcnair
Factors Influencing Vaccination Decisions In African American Mothers Of Preschool Age Children, Chauntel Mckenzie Mcnair
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Rates and coverage levels of immunizations of African-American children are reduced compared to other races. Few studies have identified factors that influence vaccination decisions of African-American mothers. This study assessed the mothers' vaccination decisions using a self-administered questionnaire and a screening instrument for determining health literacy. This instrument is called Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine (REALM). The sample was 92 African American mothers, recruited from a large metropolitan church in Jacksonville, Florida, who had at least one child under the age of seven. A cross-sectional research design was used to administer survey instruments to identify and interpret parental …

Ranking Literature From The Network Of Drug-Disease Association Through Multi-Layered Semantic Model, Karththikka Ramani Muthukuri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This thesis presents the design and impementation of a system to find the top ranked relevant Medline citations with hyperlinks. The iput to the systm is a network of semantically related drug-diseases associations obtained by the DDNet. A fully functional system can be used for generation/validation of hypothesis or to find most relevant literature based on user input in birdging gap between the generation and utilzation of biomedical literature. Such a system may also have an impact in identification of "drug targets" and may open new avenues for "drug repositioning" in clinical and translational research. Multi-Layered LSA model is implemented …
Varying Effects Of Agricultural Pesticides On Host-Pathogen Interactions And Aquatic Ecosystems In An Amphibian System, Shane Michael Hanlon
Varying Effects Of Agricultural Pesticides On Host-Pathogen Interactions And Aquatic Ecosystems In An Amphibian System, Shane Michael Hanlon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Due to the displacement of natural habitats by anthropogenic landscapes (e.g. agricultural fields), the use of agrochemicals (e.g. pesticides) has increased exponentially and non-target organisms such as amphibians are often at risk of exposure through direct overspray, runoff, or spraydrift. Because agricultural landscapes are encroaching on amphibian habitats, interactions likely occur between environmental pressures such as disease and contamination. Accordingly, I assessed the effects of pesticides on the amphibian pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) host-pathogen interactions. As Bd-infected individuals have been found in agricultural-adjacent landscapes, pesticides can potentially alter host-pathogen interactions. In chapter two I demonstrated that pesticides can kill Bd …

Background: The objective was to investigate the association between BMI and single nucleotide polymorphisms previously identified of obesity-related genes in two Spanish populations. Forty SNPs in 23 obesity-related genes were evaluated in a rural population characterized by a high prevalence of obesity (869 subjects, mean age 46 yr, 62% women, 36% obese) and in an urban population (1425 subjects, mean age 54 yr, 50% women, 19% obese). Genotyping was assessed by using SNPlex and PLINK for the association analysis. Results: Polymorphisms of the FTO were significantly associated with BMI, in the rural population (beta 0.87, p-value <0.001). None of the other SNPs showed significant association after Bonferroni correction in the two populations or in the pooled analysis. A weighted genetic risk score (wGRS) was constructed using the risk alleles of the Tag-SNPs with a positive Beta parameter in both populations. From the first to the fifth quintile of the score, the BMI increased 0.45 kg/m2 in Hortega and 2.0 kg/m2 in Pizarra. Overall, the obesity predictive value was low (less than 1%).Conclusion: The risk associated with polymorphisms is low and the overall effect on BMI or obesity prediction is minimal. A weighted genetic risk score based on genes mainly acting through central nervous system mechanisms was associated with BMI but it yields minimal clinical prediction for the obesity risk in the general population. © 2013 Martínez-García et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.
Williams V. Board Of County Commissioners Of Missoula County, Ross Keogh
Williams V. Board Of County Commissioners Of Missoula County, Ross Keogh
Public Land & Resources Law Review
The Montana Supreme Court affirmed the Fourth Judicial District Court’s holding that Montana Code Annotated § 76-2-205(6) was an unconstitutional delegation of legislative power. The statute contains a “protest provision” which enabled landowners owning 50% of the property taxed as forest or agriculture to stop zoning decisions. The case resulted from efforts by Missoula County to zone land north of Lolo to address public health and safety concerns posed by gravel mining, and asphalt production operations, proposed by Liberty Cove, Inc. The Court also found the protest provision of the statute severable from the general zoning power.[1]

Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase (Pi3k) Inhibitors As Cancer Therapeutics, Akintunde Akinleye, Parthu Avvaru, Muhammad Furqan, Yongping Song, Delong Liu
NYMC Faculty Publications
Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases (PI3Ks) are lipid kinases that regulate diverse cellular processes including proliferation, adhesion, survival, and motility. Dysregulated PI3K pathway signaling occurs in one-third of human tumors. Aberrantly activated PI3K signaling also confers sensitivity and resistance to conventional therapies. PI3K has been recognized as an attractive molecular target for novel anti-cancer molecules. In the last few years, several classes of potent and selective small molecule PI3K inhibitors have been developed, and at least fifteen compounds have progressed into clinical trials as new anticancer drugs. Among these, idelalisib has advanced to phase III trials in patients with advanced indolent non-Hodgkin's lymphoma …

Innovations In Evaluating Health Campaigns In Developing Countries, W. Douglas Evans, Marc Boulay, Rebecca Firestone, Rajiv N. Rimal
GW Health Communication and Marketing Symposium Series
When conducting research in resource-poor settings, what research-method textbooks prescribe often varies substantially from what actually gets implemented on the ground. Randomization often breaks down, extraneous noise often pollutes the purity of experimental designs, and other challenges emerge in the field. The panel will highlight some of those challenges and engage the audience in discussions about possible solutions. Dr. Boulay will illustrate an analytic approach that combines propensity score matching and mediation analysis to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of SBCC activities. Dr. Firestone will discuss PSI's experience using coarsened exact matching to strengthen evaluation of its behavior change communications …
