Clarifying The Direction Of Effects Between Alliance And Client Involvement In Treatment For Child Anxiety In Community Settings, Nadia Islam
Theses and Dissertations
Alliance and client involvement are thought to be important therapy process factors in child psychotherapy; however, few studies have investigated them over the course of treatment. The present study examined change in alliance, client involvement, and the relationship between the two over time in an effectiveness study comparing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and usual clinical care (UC) for child anxiety disorders. The sample included 40 clinically-referred children (57.50%, female, mean age = 10.81, SD = 2.11, 35.00% Caucasian, 32.50% Latino/Hispanic, 5.00% African-American, 7.50% mixed ethnicity, 20.00% not reported) and 39 therapists employed by community clinics. Two doctoral-level students comprised the …
Skateboarding As Transportation: Findings From An Exploratory Study, Tessa Walker
Skateboarding As Transportation: Findings From An Exploratory Study, Tessa Walker
Dissertations and Theses
In recent decades skateboarding has expanded from recreation into a form of transportation. Skateboarders appear to use roadways much as other non‐motorized modes do. However, there is little academic research on the needs and characteristics of the skateboard as a mode. This research reports demographics, multi‐modal and travel behavior findings, and other data from an exploratory mixed‐methods study of skateboarding as a mode of transportation.
Science Journals In The Garden: Developing The Skill Of Observation In Elementary Age Students, Karinsa Michelle Kelly
Science Journals In The Garden: Developing The Skill Of Observation In Elementary Age Students, Karinsa Michelle Kelly
Dissertations and Theses
The ability to make and record scientific observations is critical in order for students to engage in successful inquiry, and provides a sturdy foundation for children to develop higher order cognitive processes. Nevertheless, observation is taken for granted in the elementary classroom. This study explores how linking school garden experience with the use of science journals can support this skill. Students participated in a month-long unit in which they practiced their observation skills in the garden and recorded those observations in a science journal. Students' observational skills were assessed using pre- and post-assessments, student journals, and student interviews using three …

A Cell Permeable Peptide Targeting The Intracellular Loop 2 Of Endothelin B Receptor Reduces Pulmonary Hypertension In A Hypoxic Rat Model, Daniel S. Green, Chamila Rupasinghe, Rod Warburton, Jamie L. Wilson, Christine O. Sallum, Linda Taylor, Achan Yatawara, Dale Mierke, Peter Polgar, Nicholas Hill
Dartmouth Scholarship
Cell permeable peptides (CPP) aid cellular uptake of targeted cargo across the hydrophobic plasma membrane. CPP-mediated cargo delivery of receptor signaling motifs provides an opportunity to regulate specific receptor initiated signaling cascades. Both endothelin-1 receptors, ETA and ETB, have been targets of antagonist therapies for individuals with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). These therapies have had success but have been accompanied by adverse reactions. Also, unlike the CPP which target specific signaling cascades, the antagonists target the entire function of the receptor. Using the CPP strategy of biased antagonism of the ETB receptor’s intracellular loop 2 (ICB2), we demonstrate blunting of …

Background: In HIV-infected children, viral diversity tends to increase with age in the absence of antiretroviral treatment (ART). We measured HIV diversity in African children (ages 6–36 months) enrolled in a randomized clinical trial comparing two ART regimens (Cohort I of the P1060 trial). Children in this cohort were exposed to single dose nevirapine (sdNVP) at birth. Methods: HIV diversity was measured retrospectively using a high resolution melting (HRM) diversity assay. Samples were obtained from 139 children at the enrollment visit prior to ART initiation. Six regions of the HIV genome were analyzed: two in gag , one in pol …

Sperm Donors On The Large And Small Screen, Joanna L. Grossman
Sperm Donors On The Large And Small Screen, Joanna L. Grossman
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
These media depictions of sperm donors and their offspring—one fictional, one not—raise at least three important questions. First, how courts or legislatures should balance the rights of donorconceived offspring, many of whom express an interest in learning the identity of their donors, against the rights of the donor, the biological mother, and perhaps the mother’s partner or spouse, most of whom entered into the arrangement with the belief that the anonymity would be permanent. Second, can or should the system of anonymous sperm donation survive in an age when technology has made it increasingly hard to keep secrets and the …
The Promise: A Mythic-Archetypal And Gender-Oriented Analysis Of J.D. Salinger's "A Perfect Day For Bananafish", Warren Spratley
The Promise: A Mythic-Archetypal And Gender-Oriented Analysis Of J.D. Salinger's "A Perfect Day For Bananafish", Warren Spratley
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an analysis of J.D. Salinger’s “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” from both mythic-archetypal and gender-oriented perspectives. It looks specifically at the way a gender-oriented reading allows one to interpret “Bananafish” as a radical reassessment of Carl Jung’s ideas about the process of individuation, as well as Joseph Campbell’s conception of what he describes as the monomyth in his The Hero with a Thousand Faces. The reader is asked to look at how patriarchal values have greatly limited the development of these characters’ identities over time, and the complex archetypal and mythic implications of this limitation.

Summary Of Aspen Financial Services, Inc. V. Eighth Jud. Dist. Ct., 129 Nev. Ad. Op. 93, Casey J. Stiteler
Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
The question before the Court was whether the district court properly quashed a subpoena based on an assertion of protection under Nevada’s news shield statute, NRS 49.275. The court determined: (1) whether a request for protection under NRS 49.275 may be raised in a motion to quash without a supporting affidavit; (2) whether the requested information, which sought the identities of a reporter’s sources, was protected by Nevada’s news shield privilege; and (3) whether petitioners overcame the news shield privilege.

Development Of Freight Performance Measures Using Gps Truck Data, Zach Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The availability of GPS technology has allowed for significant advances in the research of freight transportation. Current systems enable information to be gathered on an individualistic scale including informations such as speed, direction and location within feet of their actual location. Several agencies have begun the process of collection and archiving data into large databases to make access and continuity of the information readily available to researchers. The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is contracted with freight companies to collect their truck GPS information and add it to a large database. This is one of the most extensive truck GPS …
Local Delivery Of Growth Stimulators For Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Preliminary In Vitro Study, Jennifer Leigh Baldwin
Local Delivery Of Growth Stimulators For Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Preliminary In Vitro Study, Jennifer Leigh Baldwin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Diabetic foot ulcers affect approximately 15% of the almost 20.8 million people with diabetes mellitus, costing approximately $10.9 billion annually. Diabetic foot ulcers are particularly difficult to treat due to neuropathy and healing deficiencies. The objective of this in vitro study was to measure the effects of adenosine and glutathione on fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis while improving the availability of these compounds at the wound site with the use of a chitosan sponge as a localized delivery vehicle. This study found adenosine (500µM) and glutathione (250µM) enhanced fibroblast proliferation by approximately 100% and 46% increase as compared to untreated …

Essays In Applied Microeconomics, Moon Moon Haque
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
My dissertation comprises three essays in applied microeconomics. They mostly focused on the evaluation and recommendation of policy issues in the fields of health economics and labor economics, with a direct objective toward to alleviate inequality, and to promote efficient and effective economic policies. The first essay studies how the coverage of health insurance can contribute to obesity (BMI index). First, I extend the the theoretical model of Ehrlich and Becker (1972) to find the relationship between health insurance and obesity; and then supplement the theoretical findings with empirical evidence, using BRFSS data from 2001to 2011 among American young adults. …

Addition of ferrous chloride can improve wastewater treatment plant process outcomes. In the study, a municipal wastewater treatment plant ceased adding ferrous chloride to its anaerobic lagoon and belt filter press filtrate return streams. Total suspended solids (TSS) and five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) effluent concentrations and percent removals, primary clarifier BOD5 and TSS effluent concentration and percent removals, sludge volume index (SVI), sludge polymer feed demand, and H2S concentration in biogas on days with ferrous chloride addition were all compared using non-parametric randomization statistical techniques to days without ferrous chloride addition. It was found that plant performance on days …

IInfant mortality is high in Jordan, a developing country in the Middle East, at 19 per 1000 live births. Most mortality risk factors are preventable. The SIDS incidence rate has also been extrapolated as 11.22 per 1000 live births [1]. This is much higher than the United State of America (USA), a developed country (0.54 per 1000 live births) [2]. Most of modifiable SIDS risk factors can be reduced by increasing knowledge, change behaviors and practices regarding SIDS risks and prevention measures.
There has not been a major investment in educating Jordanians about SIDS. Heath care providers are identified …

The advent of Massive Open Online Courses has been variously described as heralding the end of the modern university or alternatively, an over-hyped re-badging of existing online content whose advantages have already been realised. Appeals to ideology however, have typically characterised coverage of both polarities rather than hard evidence; in particular, there has been much less analysis on just how learning outcomes are impacted by either “face-to-face” interaction or online/digital environment. Less dichotomously and even more rarely addressed is perhaps a more pertinent question: What blending of the two learning modes works best and in what circumstances? In this paper …
Contrast Adaptation In The Lateral Eye Of Limulus Polyphemus, Tchoudomira Valtcheva
Contrast Adaptation In The Lateral Eye Of Limulus Polyphemus, Tchoudomira Valtcheva
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Luminance and contrast adaptation are neuronal mechanisms that the retina applies for continuous adjustment to light sensitivity though a collection of cellular and synaptic mechanisms distributed across the retinal network, thus accommodating the wide input range of the visual system within the constricted output range of retinal ganglion cells. Luminance mean adaptation has been demonstrated in the output neurons of the invertebrate eye (eccentric cells), and the aim of the study was to investigate whether the homology in visual processing extends to luminance variance (contrast) adaptation as well. The spike trains of individual eccentric cells were recorded from live horseshoe …

The Best Interests Of The Child?: The Cultural Defense As Justification For Child Abuse, R. Lee Strasburger Jr.
The Best Interests Of The Child?: The Cultural Defense As Justification For Child Abuse, R. Lee Strasburger Jr.
Pace International Law Review
As the world continues to shrink and immigration increases across the globe, children are more frequently being raised under the influence of several cultures. As these cultures clash, children may be subject to child-rearing practices that are abusive in one culture and accepted in another, leaving state criminal court systems to sort out the aftermath. In these cases, the accused immigrant parents may be able to use the cultural defense to escape conviction or mitigate their sentences in the face of child abuse charges. This cultural defense has been successfully used in courts all over the world, including the United …
Guarding International Borders Against Hiv: A Comparative Study In Futility, Matthew J. Defazio
Guarding International Borders Against Hiv: A Comparative Study In Futility, Matthew J. Defazio
Pace International Law Review
Back in 1985, when knowledge of HIV began to spread, governments reacted by passing immigration laws to restrict the entry of HIV positive individuals. These laws required such individuals to either declare their HIV status or undergo mandatory HIV testing to secure entry. As justification for these initiatives, many countries claimed to be preserving the public health and their domestic economy. The United States, China, and Russia are three countries that have had, or still have, some form of HIV immigration restrictions. Initially, it may seem logical that preventing HIV positive individuals from entering a country will cut down on …

Contract In My Soup: Chinese Contract Formation And Ritual Eating And Drunkenness, Mary Szto
Pace International Law Review
Scholars and practitioners alike recognize that contract formation in today's China requires more than an understanding of black letter law, but also knowledge of cultural practices. While there is much literature, however, about the legal unenforceability of contracts, the importance of guanxi (relationships), mianzi (face), and interpersonal harmony, there is little mention of eating and drinking rituals. Since time immemorial, ritual eating and drinking have legal meaning in China. These rituals often are the heart of building trust and negotiating terms in China. They are also the foundation for performance and enforcement. Often, however, these rituals involve drunkenness, which sometimes …
Thomas Jefferson And The Ideology Of Democratic Schooling, James Carpenter
Thomas Jefferson And The Ideology Of Democratic Schooling, James Carpenter
Democracy & Education
I challenge the traditional argument that Jefferson’s educational plans for Virginia were built on modern democratic understandings. While containing some democratic features, especially for the founding decades, Jefferson’s concern was narrowly political, designed to ensure the survival of the new republic. The significance of this piece is to add to the more accurate portrayal of Jefferson’s impact on American institutions.
Human Recombineering, Melvys Valledor
Human Recombineering, Melvys Valledor
Open Access Dissertations
Genome editing by homologous recombination (HR) is centrally important for functional genomics, making disease models, bioengineering and for gene therapy. Viral HR relies on a SynExo complex comprised of an exonuclease and a synaptase. Genome editing by the phage lambda synaptase Beta approaches HR rates of 10% in E. coli using ssDNA-mediated Recombineering but is much less efficient in mammalian cells. SynExos are common to dsDNA viruses that infect a variety of hosts and their mechanisms are conserved, suggesting that direct genome Recombineering can be extended beyond bacteria. Our hypothesis is that co-evolution of viral SynExo recombinases with host proteins …
