Trans Women And Aging: A Qualitative Study, Martha B. Leighton
Trans Women And Aging: A Qualitative Study, Martha B. Leighton
Master's Theses and Capstones
Data from interviews with 11 transgender women ages 55 to 77 were used to examine the experiences of gender-diverse individuals throughout the lifespan. Specifically, qualitative methods were used to examine how participants had experienced discrimination, developed strengths and resiliencies as a response to discrimination, and employed strategies predicted by Hobfoll's Conservation of Resources Theory. Focused coding of the data revealed significant and pervasive discrimination in multiple settings and throughout the participants' lives. The data also, however, revealed a wide range of strengths and resiliencies and indicated that participants employed a variety of strategies that allowed them to amass, maintain, and …

How Welfare Reform Act Affects Elderly Immigrants' Health And Healthcare Service Utilization: Comparisons Before And After Welfare Reform, Younsook Yeo
Theses and Dissertations
Background: The intended result of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-193: PRWORA) was to conserve public funds while addressing welfare deficits. To achieve this end, the PRWORA (1) requires immigrants who came to the United States after the law took effect to show proof of U.S. citizenship to be eligible for federally funded public benefits, including Medicaid, unless the states where they lived provide state-funded benefits; (2) reinforced the `public charge law,' indicating that once the Immigration and Nationalization Service deems a post-welfare reform immigrant a public charge, this could result in the …
An Intergenerational Leisure Activity Program To Promote Successful Aging, Rachel Becker, Jason Zacharias
An Intergenerational Leisure Activity Program To Promote Successful Aging, Rachel Becker, Jason Zacharias
Occupational Therapy Capstones
PROBLEM: By the year 2030, older adults who are 65 years of age or older will account for 20% of the US population (Center for Disease Control, 2008); however, the rate of successful aging has decreased 25% from 1998 to 2004 (McLaughlin, Connell, Heeringa, Li, &Roberts, 2009).
PURPOSE: The purpose of this scholarly project is to develop an intergenerational program that will promote successful aging of older adults. METHOD: A literature review was conducted on older adults and successful aging using PubMed, OT search, CINAHL, AJOT, Google scholar, and textbooks. RESULTS: Researchers indicated that intergenerational programs promote successful aging and …
The Service Learning Experience: How Storytelling Evolves In People With Alzheimer's And Dementia And Why This Is Important To The Creative Writing Student And The Community, Alice Spicer
HIM 1990-2015
All meaningful communication is a form of storytelling, according to Walter Fisher, who introduced the narrative paradigm to communication theory, and storytelling is universal across cultures and time as the manner in which people comprehend life. Storytelling is also a creative form of art. This interdisciplinary, multimedia work will explore the creative use of non-traditional storytelling to gather information about how creativity evolves in people with Alzheimer's and dementia and why this is important to both academia and the community. Currently, there is a lot of research available about the debilitating affects of memory loss, but there is very little …
The Combined Effect Of Tai Chi And Weight Loss On Physical Function In Community Dwelling Obese Older Wommen, Jonathan M. Letendre
The Combined Effect Of Tai Chi And Weight Loss On Physical Function In Community Dwelling Obese Older Wommen, Jonathan M. Letendre
Open Access Master's Theses
Introduction: Older obese women are at risk of obesity-related disability, but Tai Chi has not been explored as an exercise modality along with weight loss for their effects on physical function. Methods: A 16-week community-based intervention was conducted to assess the impact of Tai Chi plus behaviorally-based weight loss (TCWL, n=29) on obese (BMI=35.4 ±0.8 kg/m2) older (68.2±1.5 yr) women compared to a control group (CON, n=9, BMI=38.0±1.5kg/m2, 65.6±2.7 yr). The major outcome was the short physical performance battery (SPPB), consisting of 4-m gait speed (GS), standing balance, and chair stand (CS) tests. The TCWL group …
Acute Effects Of Exercise On Cognitive Performances Of Older Adults, R. Pennington, S. Hanna
Acute Effects Of Exercise On Cognitive Performances Of Older Adults, R. Pennington, S. Hanna
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Accelerating rates of structural decline become evident during the third and fourth decades of human life, with disproportionate degeneration occurring in the frontal, parietal, and temporal brain lobes. As the structure of the brain declines, a broad array of cognitive processes involving memory, decision making, and selective attention are reduced as well (Raz 2000, Park et al. 2001). Cardiovascular exercise has been associated with improved cognitive functioning in aging humans, suggesting that increased vascular supply enhances availability of oxygen, nutrients, and other physical entities to nourish the brain. Previous experimentation on older adults revealed significant positive effects of exercise on …

No Peace In The House: Witchcraft Accusations As An "Old Woman's Problem" In Ghana, Alexandra Crampton
No Peace In The House: Witchcraft Accusations As An "Old Woman's Problem" In Ghana, Alexandra Crampton
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
In Ghana, older women may be marginalized, abused, and even killed as witches. Media accounts imply this is common practice, mainly through stories of “witches camps” to which the accused may flee. Anthropological literature on aging and on witchcraft, however, suggests that this focus exaggerates and misinterprets the problem. This article presents a literature review and exploratory data on elder advocacy and rights intervention on behalf of accused witches in Ghana to help answer the question of how witchcraft accusations become an older woman’s problem in the context of aging and elder advocacy work. The ineffectiveness of rights based and …
Determinants Of Aged-Friendly Urban Neighbourhoods In Malaysia / Hanan Mohamed Hassan Elsawahli, Hanan Mohamed Hassan Elsawahli
Determinants Of Aged-Friendly Urban Neighbourhoods In Malaysia / Hanan Mohamed Hassan Elsawahli, Hanan Mohamed Hassan Elsawahli
Student Works (2010-2019)
Malaysia is experiencing a rapid increase in its elderly population. According to 2010 census, the number of elderly has risen from 1.4 million in 2000 to 2.1 million in 2010 and is projected to be 3.4 million by 2020. As Malaysia progressed towards becoming a developed and competitive country by 2020, aging population will be a main challenge to planners and policy makers in terms of designing aged-friendly neighbourhoods and providing accessible amenities and services to meet the needs of the elderly. There is a growing interest in aged-friendly neighbourhoods as the neighbourhoods that promotes an active lifestyle among its …

Perceptions Of Five-Year Competitive Categories: Model Of How Relative Age Influences Competitiveness In Masters Sport, Nikola Medic, Bradley Young, J. Robert Grove
Research outputs 2013
The purpose of this study was to examine the contrasting perceptions of masters swimmers related to the first and fifth constituent years of a 5-year age category. Swimmers aged between 35 and 93 years (154 male, 184 female) were surveyed at the 2008 FINA World Masters Championships. Exploratory factor analysis indicated the existence of the following five factors considered important for preparation, attendance, and success at masters competitions: awareness of advantages, expectancy, motivation, training, and physiological capacity. One sample ttests showed that masters swimmers are conscious of advantages that 5-year age categories afford to relatively-younger cohorts (i.e., those who are …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Echium oil (EO), which is enriched in SDA (18:4 n-3), reduces plasma triglyceride (TG) concentrations in humans and mice. We compared mechanisms by which EO and fish oil (FO) reduce plasma TG concentrations in mildly hypertriglyceridemic male apoB100-only LDLrKO mice. Mice were fed one of three atherogenic diets containing 0.2% cholesterol and palm oil (PO; 20%), EO (10% EO + 10% PO), or FO (10% FO + 10% PO). Livers from PO- and EO-fed mice had similar TG and cholesteryl ester (CE) content, which was significantly higher than in FO-fed mice. Plasma TG secretion was reduced in FO vs. EO-fed …

The Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects (the "Common Rule") is codified in separate regulations by seventeen federal departments and agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HHS’s version of the Common Rule currently contains a basic policy for the protection of all human subjects, codified at Subpart A of the Common Rule, as well as special provisions governing human subjects research involving three sets of vulnerable populations, including pregnant women, fetuses, and neonates (Subpart B); prisoners (Subpart C); and children (Subpart D). This Article proposes that HHS amend the Common Rule to add a …

Physiotherapists Have Accurate Expectations Of Their Patients’ Future Health-Related Quality Of Life After First Assessment In A Subacute Rehabilitation Setting, Steven M. Mcphail, Emily Nalder, Anne-Marie Hill, Terry P. Haines
Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles
Background.
Expectations held by health professionals and their patients are likely to affect treatment choices in subacute inpatient rehabilitation settings for older adults. There is a scarcity of empirical evidence evaluating whether health professionals expectations of the quality of their patients’ future health states are accurate.
Methods.
A prospective longitudinal cohort investigation was implemented to examine agreement (kappa coefficients, exact agreement, limits-of-agreement, and intraclass-correlation coefficients) between physiotherapists’ (n=23) prediction of patients’ discharge health-related quality of life (reported on the EQ-5D-3L) and the actual health-related quality of life self-reported by patients (n=272) at their discharge assessment (using the EQ-5D-3L). The mini-mental …
Exploring Wellbeing In Older Male Farmers In Western Australia, Jessica L. Mckee
Exploring Wellbeing In Older Male Farmers In Western Australia, Jessica L. Mckee
Theses : Honours
In the context of an ageing population it has become increasingly important to identify the determinants of wellbeing in older adulthood. A review of the literature relevant to wellbeing and strengths relevant to older male farmers in Australia was conducted. This body of knowledge was identified to be sparse. Existing literature on farming primarily had a deficits focus, and only a small number of qualitative studies were specific to older male farmers. Four broad, overlapping areas representing the meaning of wellbeing were identified as potentially important: farming work; connectedness; the land; health and wellbeing. The inter-connected nature of farming life …
Evidence For The Bypass Of The Response-Selection Bottleneck In Tasks With Reflexive Responses In Younger And Older Adults, Brandi S. Seaman
Evidence For The Bypass Of The Response-Selection Bottleneck In Tasks With Reflexive Responses In Younger And Older Adults, Brandi S. Seaman
Scripps Senior Theses
This study investigated dual-task processing in younger and older adults using a psychological refractory period procedure. The first task was to name the color framing a picture; the second task was to either press a button or tilt their body in the direction of the tilt of the picture. In the body-tilt condition, electromyography was used to determine the reaction time. The stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA) between the onset of the color and tilting of the picture varied from 50 to 1000 ms. In contrast with the response selection bottleneck model, which claims that processing of a second task cannot be …
The It-Business Equilibrium Model: Understanding The Dynamics Between Business Demand And It Supply, Lawrence Ness, Shankar Babu Chebrolu
The It-Business Equilibrium Model: Understanding The Dynamics Between Business Demand And It Supply, Lawrence Ness, Shankar Babu Chebrolu
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
The factors that could be used to define, measure, and improve IT flexibility are not considered to be well-defined or understood. A theoretical framework for understanding and determining such factors is proposed in this article, which could be used by business and IT leaders to assess their IT flexibility. Organizations can use this framework, termed the IT-business equilibrium model, as a tool to improve their own IT flexibility as a means to improve their IT effectiveness and ultimately achieve sustained competitive advantage for their businesses.

The Enemy Was Waste, Margaret Morganroth Gullette
The Enemy Was Waste, Margaret Morganroth Gullette
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
"My Father’s Thrift." When I was a child, the unnamed enemy was “waste.” My father went around the house turning off lights when we left a room, or sometimes urged us out of a room where a light could be extinguished. He saved the soap ends and crushed them together for continued use. We children got new clothes rarely, and made old shoes last. You can bet we cleaned our plates—nobody had to remind us about the starving Armenians. My parents were “thrifty”—that was the positive word they used. What they were avoiding—“waste”—that word was heard only, very …

[First paragraph] Making the decision to return to school for a PhD was difficult for me. I feared the unknown but inescapable lifestyle adjustments. I’m resistant to change. When facing life’s cold waters, I wade, rather than plunge. There’s no wading into a PhD program. In spite of my cautious nature, I took the plunge.

Long-Term Care: An Analysis Of Quality By Rurality In Illinois Nursing Homes, Kimberly M. Brombosz
Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of care rating for long-term care facilities in rural versus urban Illinois locations. Using quality of care data available on medicare.gov, 774 Illinois long-term care facilities were compared to determine if a difference in quality of care existed based on rurality. Each facility was classified as either urban focused, large rural city/town (micropolitan) focused, small rural town focused, or isolated small rural town focused using the Rural Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) codes provided by the Rural Health Research Center. Frequencies, ANOVA, and Scheffe tests were used to analyze the data. …
