The Nature And Perceived Influence Of Lifestyle Discussions With Older Adults In Primary Care, Shoshana H. Bardach Jan 2013

The Nature And Perceived Influence Of Lifestyle Discussions With Older Adults In Primary Care, Shoshana H. Bardach

Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology

The Nature and Perceived Influence of Lifestyle Discussions with Older Adults in Primary Care Rationale: A healthy diet and physical activity help with disease prevention and disease management and can promote quality of life regardless of the age at which an individual begins engaging in these behaviors. Despite the value of these health behaviors, many older adults do not follow lifestyle recommendations. Given that older adults frequently interact with the healthcare system, primary care providers are well situated to counsel older adults to improve their health behaviors. Unfortunately, we do not know how to most effectively engage in this counseling. …

The Graying Of People With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: Organizational Efforts Of Community Service Providers In Adapting Facilities And Programming To Meet The Needs Of Older Adults, Donna M. Corrado

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities are living longer, thereby creating unique challenges for the aging and disabilities networks. This qualitative multicase study explored the ways in which six community service organizations serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have adapted their facilities and programming in response to the growing cohort of older persons in their care. The study focused on the following adaptations: physical plant, financial models, workforce, medical care and programming. Twenty-two in-depth interviews were conducted with executive-level staff of the six participating organizations. Data was triangulated through examination of archival data, organizational documents, agency web sites, and …

Women’s and Gender Studies Faculty Publication Series

BACKGROUND: Studies using administrative data report that racial/ethnic minority patients enroll in clinical trials less frequently than white patients. We studied a cohort of terminally ill cancer patients to determine a) if racial/ethnic minority patients have lower rates of drug trial enrollment than white patients once socioeconomic characteristics are accounted for and b) what factors most influence drug trial enrollment among patients with advanced canceroverall.

METHODS: Coping with Cancer (CwC) is a National Cancer Institute/National Institute of Mental Health (NCI/NIMH)-funded multisite, prospective, longitudinal study of patients with advanced cancer. Baseline interviews assessed drug trial enrollment as well as socioeconomic characteristics. …

The Effect Of Teaching Experience On Service-Learning Beliefs Of Dental Hygiene Educators, Sharlee Burch Jan 2013

The Effect Of Teaching Experience On Service-Learning Beliefs Of Dental Hygiene Educators, Sharlee Burch

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this non-experimental causal-comparative study was to determine if service-learning teaching experience affects dental hygiene faculty perceptions of service-learning benefits and barriers in the United States. Dental hygiene educators from entry-level dental hygiene education programs in the United States completed the Web-based Faculty Service-Learning Beliefs Inventory (wFSLBI) and a short demographic survey to determine the perceived differences in benefits at the classroom and community levels, and barriers at the classroom and institutional levels. Independent samples t tests and Mann-Whitney tests were employed in data analysis. Results from 317 surveys revealed there was a statistically significant difference between dental …

Using A Health Message With A Testimonial To Motivate Colon Cancer Screening: Associations With Perceived Identification And Vividness, Amanda J. Dillard, Jackie L. Main Jan 2013

Using A Health Message With A Testimonial To Motivate Colon Cancer Screening: Associations With Perceived Identification And Vividness, Amanda J. Dillard, Jackie L. Main

Peer Reviewed Articles

Research suggests that testimonials, or first-person narratives, influence health behavior and health-related decision making, but few studies have examined conceptual factors that may be responsible for these effects. In the current study, older adults who were due for colorectal cancer screening read a message about screening that included a testimonial from a similar other who had previously made the screening decision. We assessed participants’ identification with the testimonial character and the degree to which they found the message to be vivid. We explored associations between these factors and participants’ knowledge following the message, mood, certainty about screening, and their behavioral …

De- Stress To Nursing Success, Jessica Jenkins, Emily Whittle Jan 2013

De- Stress To Nursing Success, Jessica Jenkins, Emily Whittle

Honors Capstones

Nursing as a whole is a very stressful occupation to go into. From the pre-requisite classes one needs to take to even have a chance of getting into a nursing program; to the many clinical and classes that are required within nursing school, it is just a stressful school atmosphere as a whole. Then one needs to begin preparing for a national board exam that will basically dictate the rest of their life. Plus adding on family commitments, work life, and attempts for a bit of fun, it can all be very trying and consuming to an individual. It is …

Clinicians May Not Administer Life-Sustaining Treatment Without Consent: Civil, Criminal, And Disciplinary Sanctions, Thaddeus Mason Pope Jan 2013

Clinicians May Not Administer Life-Sustaining Treatment Without Consent: Civil, Criminal, And Disciplinary Sanctions, Thaddeus Mason Pope

Faculty Scholarship

Both medical and legal commentators contend that there is little legal risk for administering life-sustaining treatment without consent. In this Article, I argue that this perception is inaccurate. First, it is based on an outdated data set, primarily damages cases from the 1990s. More recent plaintiffs have been comparatively more successful in establishing civil liability. Second, the published assessments focus on too-limited data set. Even if the reviewed cases were not outdated, a focus limited to civil liability would still be too narrow. Legal sanctions have also included licensure discipline and other administrative sanctions. In short, the legal risks of …

Early And Intermediate Hospital-To-Home Transition Outcomes Of Older Adults Diagnosed With Diabetes, Jacqueline Lamanna Jan 2013

Early And Intermediate Hospital-To-Home Transition Outcomes Of Older Adults Diagnosed With Diabetes, Jacqueline Lamanna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over 5 million older adults with diabetes are hospitalized each year. Though typically not the index condition that leads to hospitalization, diabetes control often decompensates during the course of an admission and necessitates changes in home self-management plans. The specific transitional care needs of older adults with diabetes have been largely unstudied. Transition theory provided the guiding framework for this research and proposes that each transition is a complex process created by the continuous interaction of personal, community, and societal-level conditions that facilitate or inhibit the health of a transition. Hospitalization has been described as a series of three successive, …

Suitability Of Real-Time Quantitative Pcr To Estimate The Relative Telomere Length In European Hake (Merluccius Merluccius Linnaeus, 1758), Estabaliz López De Abechuco, Manuel Soto, Miguel Angel Pardo, Mark F. Haussmann, Guzmán Díez Jan 2013

Suitability Of Real-Time Quantitative Pcr To Estimate The Relative Telomere Length In European Hake (Merluccius Merluccius Linnaeus, 1758), Estabaliz López De Abechuco, Manuel Soto, Miguel Angel Pardo, Mark F. Haussmann, Guzmán Díez

Faculty Journal Articles

Telomere length measurement has been proposed as a promising tool to estimate the age of individuals in natural populations. We used real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) to measure relative telomere length in four tissues (brain, kidney, liver and muscle) of European hake (Merluccius merluccius) in different groups based upon body length an otolith age estimate. We observed a high level of inter-individual differences in the measurements of relative telomere length in hakes of similar age and body length groups. The results of qPCR analysis showed a great variability in all measures and a lack of repeatability and reproducibility with significant statistical …

A Dialogical Approach Of Group Identity Salience And The Academic Competence Of Nontraditional College Students, Robert Thally Jan 2013

A Dialogical Approach Of Group Identity Salience And The Academic Competence Of Nontraditional College Students, Robert Thally

HIM 1990-2015

As of 2007, approximately 73% of the 18 million college students in this country could be identified as nontraditional (Ross-Gordon, 2011). A key characteristic distinguishing this group from the traditional college student is the influence of multiple roles of the adult learner on the learning and engagement process (Keith, Byerly, Floerchinger, Pence, & Thornberg, 2006). Ross-Gordon remarks on some roles that may provide life experience, an asset to understanding theoretical constructs otherwise immaterial to younger, traditional learners. However, it is important to recognize the complex dynamic of conflicting roles as challenges to the academic competence of nontraditional college students. This …

Polypharmacy And The Elderly: A Case Study And Literature Review, Kristin M. Stevens Jan 2013

Polypharmacy And The Elderly: A Case Study And Literature Review, Kristin M. Stevens

Theses and Dissertations

Polypharmacy is a common issue among the elderly population due to multiple comorbidities that develop as a person ages. With this increase, there is also the increased risk for negative health outcomes such as higher healthcare costs, adverse drug events, drug interactions, and increased mortality rate (Maher, Hanlon, & Hajjar, 2014). The elderly population is increasing worldwide, and it is estimated that 20% of the population will be older than 65 by 2025 (Milos et al., 2013). Patients 65 years old and older are the largest consumer of prescription and nonprescription medications in the United States, which has more than …

The Effect Of A Short Duration, High Intensity Exercise Intervention On Gait Biomechanics In Patients With Copd: Findings From A Pilot Study, Jenna M. Yentes, Daniel Blanke, Stephen I. Rennard, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Previous work has shown that patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) demonstrate changes in their gait biomechanics as compared to controls. This pilot study was designed to explore the possibility that biomechanical alterations present in COPD patients might be amenable to treatment by exercise training of skeletal muscle. This study investigated the effect of a 6-week exercise intervention on gait biomechanics in patients with COPD under both a rest and a non-rested condition. Seven patients with COPD underwent a supervised cardio-respiratory and strength training protocol 2-3 times per week for 6-weeks for a total of 16-sessions. Spatiotemporal, kinematic and …

Strategies for future library contributions to service learning are presented to encourage more widespread involvement across the profession.

A Perspective On Human Movement Variability With Applications In Infancy Motor Development, Nikolaos Stergiou, Yawen Yu, Anastasia Kyvelidou Jan 2013

A Perspective On Human Movement Variability With Applications In Infancy Motor Development, Nikolaos Stergiou, Yawen Yu, Anastasia Kyvelidou

Journal Articles

Movement variability is considered essential to typical motor development. However, multiple theoretical perspectives and measurement tools have limited interpretation of the importance of movement variability in biological systems. The complementary use of linear and nonlinear measures have recently allowed for the evaluation of not only the magnitude of variability but also the temporal structure of variability. As a result, the theoretical model of optimal movement variability was introduced. The model suggests that the development of healthy and highly adaptable systems relies on the achievement of an optimal state of variability. Alternatively, abnormal development may be characterized by a narrow range …

Major Depressive Disorder And Measures Of Cellular Aging: An Integrative Review, Patricia Anne Kinser, Debra E. Lyon Jan 2013

Major Depressive Disorder And Measures Of Cellular Aging: An Integrative Review, Patricia Anne Kinser, Debra E. Lyon

School of Nursing Publications

Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects millions of individuals and causes significant suffering worldwide. It has been speculated that MDD is associated with accelerated aging-related biological and functional decline. To examine the accelerated aging hypothesis, one of the biomarkers under study is leukocyte telomeres, and specifically the measure of telomere length and telomerase activity. This review integrates findings from eleven human studies which evaluated telomere length and telomerase activity, in order to synthesize the state of the current science and to inform the development of new knowledge and enhance nursing research of depression using appropriate biobehavioral measures. Although preliminary, the findings …
