Expanding Assessment Of Fear Of Falling Among Older Adults With An Intellectual Disability: A Pilot Study To Assess The Value Of Proxy Responses, Sinead Foran, Mary Mccarron, Philip Mccallion
Social Welfare Faculty Scholarship
Introduction. Fear of falling (FOF) has emerged as an important health concern in older adults, yet it has rarely been investigated in people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Valid and reliable measurement approaches are a particular challenge. Scales that have been developed to measure FOF have not been validated for use with older people with ID and are not routinely used with proxy respondents. Method. 63 people comprised purposeful samples of 3 groups, people with ID , their nominated key workers , and additional support workers . Test-retest reliability and interrater reliability were assessed for using a dichotomous, single-item FOF screening …

Examining Committee Reports As A Basis To Dismiss Petitions To Determine Incapacity: A Question Of Admissibility And Evidentiary Relevancy, Enrique Zamora, Andres Vasquez
Examining Committee Reports As A Basis To Dismiss Petitions To Determine Incapacity: A Question Of Admissibility And Evidentiary Relevancy, Enrique Zamora, Andres Vasquez
St. Thomas Law Review
This article will focus on answering two issues that play an important role in the determination of the need of establishing a guardianship for an AIP. Specifically, (1) whether the requirement that a petition to determine incapacity be dismissed if two examining committee members opine there is no incapacity, in violation of Florida's Evidence Code as well as Chapter 744's requirements; and (2) whether examining committee reports, without testimony, are hearsay under Florida's Evidence Code, section 90.803 of the Florida Statutes, and usurp judicial discretion under section 90.703. Part I will delineate the problem associated with section 744.331(4) of the …
Standards And Basic Principles Of Examining And Evaluating Capacity In Guardianship Proceedings, Stephanie Villavicencio, Alex Cuello
Standards And Basic Principles Of Examining And Evaluating Capacity In Guardianship Proceedings, Stephanie Villavicencio, Alex Cuello
St. Thomas Law Review
In the realm of guardianship law, an elder law attorney is well aware that a declaration of incapacity may strip an individual of more rights than that of a convicted felon. The concept of whether capacity is a matter of fact or law is often debated. The framework for establishing standards governing which rights warrant removal is tenuous and complex. A factual determination of incapacity requires a finding, by clear and convincing evidence, that the Respondent, or alleged incapacitated person, is both functionally unable, either wholly or partially, to care for their person (self) and/or property. This determination culminates in …

Examination Of The Impact Of Living Arrangements And Marital Status On Depression Among Older Adult Male Veterans, Nicole M. Behne
Examination Of The Impact Of Living Arrangements And Marital Status On Depression Among Older Adult Male Veterans, Nicole M. Behne
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
As the older adult population grows, depression rates are also on the rise. This is especially evident among American veterans, who experience a depression incidence close to 30%, making it one of the most common diagnoses treated within the Veterans Health Administraiton (Hankin, Spiro, Miller et al, as cited in Cully, Zimmer, Khan & Petersen, 2008).
The purpose of this study is to identify key demographic variables associated with depression among older male veterans. The results could help improve patterns of care, hopefully improving the management of depression. The retrospective descriptive study uses existing medical record data to identify patterns …

How It Came To Be…Integrating Ignatian Philosophy And Pedagogical Paradigm Into Marquette University’S Pre-Licensure Nursing Curriculum, Kerry Kosmoski-Goepfert, Margaret Callahan, Stephanie Russell
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
This article describes the process that Marquette University’s College of Nursing used to revise its pre-licensure nursing curriculum. More specifically, it explains how faculty discussions, with the Vice President of Mission & Ministry and a faculty member from the Department of Theology, which is centered on the philosophy of St. Ignatius of Loyola, and faculty participation in the Marquette Colleagues Program helped ameliorate the curricular change. The article also addresses how faculty selected the Ignatian Pedagogical Model as the framework for the revised curriculum; and the development of faculty and students for an enhanced understanding and application of Ignatian philosophy, …
Vascular Depression: An Early Indicator Of Decline, Daniel Lee Paulson
Vascular Depression: An Early Indicator Of Decline, Daniel Lee Paulson
Wayne State University Dissertations
Women over the age of 80 represent a rapidly growing demographic group. While older women live longer than men, they do so with more years of disability and frailty. The emergence of geriatric disorders such as vascular disease, depression, frailty and cognitive decline in the aging US population place additional strain and expense on the already over-burdened public health care system. Meanwhile, integrated models of care are associated with preserved functional independence, reduced medical costs, and greater satisfaction for both health care providers and patients. Implementation of integrated care demands process-models of disease that contextualize symptoms within broader patterns of …

A Case Of Fraud: Phoenix House, Charles J. Russo Phd, Lasse Martins Phd, Charles L. Martin
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
This is an actual case that has been, as noted when reading the postscript, only partially resolved. Therefore the name and location of the facility as well as the names of the employees have been changed. The case has also been classroom tested in a graduate auditing class where the students found this case to be more relevant to their own situations rather than many of the cases involving large corporations. The case involves a HUD funded independent living facility for senior citizens. The facility is run by a handful of employees who report to a director who in turn …
The Relationships Between Nursing Staff Knowledge Of Personhood And Resident Cognitive Status, Leeanne Compere Yopp
The Relationships Between Nursing Staff Knowledge Of Personhood And Resident Cognitive Status, Leeanne Compere Yopp
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the relationships between nursing staff knowledge of extended care resident personhood and resident cognitive status. Eighty nursing staff from two similar extended care facilities in Arkansas completed a self-administered questionnaire to assess their knowledge of 21 residents, including information related to residents’ past jobs/careers; likes/dislikes/ interests; family members; other non-specific knowledge; and total knowledge. The Brief Interview for Mental Status (BIMS) was used to evaluate resident cognitive impairment. Results of a Pearson correlation demonstrate a positive correlation between (1) staff knowledge of residents’ families, and (2) total knowledge of residents with …

College of Health and Human Services
African Americans have the highest prevalence of hypertension in the world which may emanate from their predisposition to heightened endothelial inflammation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 6-month aerobic exercise training (AEXT) intervention on the inflammatory biomarkers interleukin-10 (IL-10), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and endothelial microparticle (EMP) CD62E+ and endothelial function assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in African Americans. A secondary purpose was to evaluate whether changes in IL-10, IL-6, or CD62E+ EMPs predicted the change in FMD following the 6-month AEXT intervention. A pre-post design was employed with baseline evaluation including office blood pressure, FMD, …

Intergenerational learning involves different age groups learning together or learning from each other in a range of settings. It is viewed as being important in contemporary Europe as it facilitates learning that might otherwise be diminished due to changing family structures, migration, technological changes and growing age segregation. Interest in intergenerational learning stems from new understandings of the process and participation in education and learning. This includes the notions of lifelong and lifewide learning as well as the need to respond positively to the growing separation of generations and the subsequent distance between old and young. It also can be …

Vitamin B12 Deficiency In Relation To Functional Disabilities, Breanna S. Oberlin, Christy C. Tangney, Kristin A. R. Gustashaw, Heather E. Rasmussen
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
This study was designed to assess whether symptoms, functional measures, and reported disabilities were associated with vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency when defined in three ways. Participants, aged 60 or more years of age, in 1999–2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) were categorized in relation to three previously used definitions of B12 deficiency: (1) serum B12 < 148 pmol/L; (2) serum B12 < 200 pmol/L and serum homocysteine > 20 μmol/L; and (3) serum B12 < 258 pmol/L or serum methylmalonic acid > 0.21 μmol/L. Functional measures of peripheral neuropathy, balance, cognitive function, gait speed, along with self-reported disability (including activities of daily living) were examined with standardized instruments by trained NHANES interviewers and technicians. Individuals identified as B12 deficient …

Despite law firms’ demand for first year associates who can work collaboratively, teamwork is infrequently taught in legal education. Law professors unfamiliar with teamwork theory and practice are unlikely to use teams to engage students in their learning. As a result, law schools continue to graduate students who are unfamiliar and uncomfortable with the concept of working in teams, particularly interdisciplinary teams.
This article focuses on the teamwork teaching methods we use in the interdisciplinary courses we teach at California Western. We first provide a rationale for teaching teamwork and a brief description of what professional graduate schools are currently …

The Effect Of Context And Self-Esteem On Decision Making Competence And Preferences For Collaborative Decision Making In Older Adults, Christopher Gayer
The Effect Of Context And Self-Esteem On Decision Making Competence And Preferences For Collaborative Decision Making In Older Adults, Christopher Gayer
Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology
Older adults increasingly face difficult decisions in life threatening contexts as they move closer to death, become more likely to be diagnosed with life threatening diseases, and encounter more death within their social network (Greenberg, 2011). The purpose of this research was to understand the effect of a life-threatening decision context centered around cancer, self-esteem, other individual difference factors and cancer experience on older adults’ decision making competence, and preferences for collaborative decision making.
Study participants were recruited through online circulation of the study recruitment flyer and in-person solicitations at meetings and other events at community locations (senior centers, civic …

Getting To The Other Side: An Exploration Of The Head And Neck Cancer Treatment Experience, Heather M. Wallace
Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology
Diagnosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) presents a multifarious problem. Late stage diagnosis, uncertainty regarding appropriate clinical treatment, as well as the high potential for disfigurement and functional loss resulting in diminished quality of life, contributes to anxiety, stress, fear, and uncertainty throughout the cancer treatment experience. This qualitative study sought to explore the cancer treatment experience of adults with newly diagnosed HNSCC, including laryngeal, esophageal, and oral cancers. Study participants were recruited from the University of Kentucky Ear Nose and Throat Clinic in Lexington KY. Participants agreed to be interviewed after receipt of their cancer diagnosis …
The Influence Of Widowed Status And Task Complexity On Decision Making, Courtney L. Ortz
The Influence Of Widowed Status And Task Complexity On Decision Making, Courtney L. Ortz
Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology
Widowhood is a stressful life event that can impact an individual’s everyday life, including her decision making abilities. The complexity of the decision is also likely to influence the decision making abilities of these widows. The purpose of this dissertation was to better understand widows’ decision making processes, their preferences for collaboration when making decisions, and their satisfaction with the decision outcomes. Data analysis consisted of a series of 3 (widowed status) x 2 (task complexity) ANOVAS and ANCOVAS which found that both complexity and widowed status influence decision making processes. Higher complexity led to less overall satisfaction, but none …

Background. Chronic medical conditions often occur in combination. Understanding underlying mechanisms causing diseases and their interactions may make it possible to address multiple complex conditions with single or consolidated treatment approaches and improve patients’ health outcomes while reducing costs.
Objectives. We present a synthesis of the current interprofessional discourse on the issues surrounding comorbidities.
Methods. A targeted review of the literature was conducted using published editorials, commentaries, and review articles.
Results. Errors in conceptualization and measurement plague our current understanding of comorbidities. Two potential paths to generating knowledge involve the use of etiological or epidemiological approach. An etiological approach investigates …
