Counter-Design: Alternative Design And Research Methods, Joshua Singer Sep 2013

Counter-Design: Alternative Design And Research Methods, Joshua Singer

Learn X Design Conference Series

Art is critical in its ability to propose an alternative to an accepted reality, and produces a counter-consciousness; a “negation of the realistic-conformist mind” [Marcuse, 1979, p 9] Communication design, is a formalized practice embedded in and serving conventional cultural production and capital. An alternative counterdesign “…chooses instead to emphasize the need for a renewal of philosophical discourse and for social and political involvement as a way of bringing about structural changes in our society.” [Lang, 2005, p. 46.] For communication design to dismiss its conventional service to capital is in itself a critical negation. Additionally, communication design’s prescribed functions …

Discursive Tactical Negotiations Within And Across Literacy Coaching Interactions, Carolyn S. Hunt Sep 2013

Discursive Tactical Negotiations Within And Across Literacy Coaching Interactions, Carolyn S. Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, the researcher employed de Certeau's theoretical insights into cultural production in everyday life to examine how literacy coaches and teachers discursively negotiated issues of identity, power, and positioning during coaching interactions. The study also explored how literacy coaches and teachers enacted emotions within these discursive negotiations of identity, power, and positioning; and how physical, social, and ideological spaces were shaped by and reflected in coaching interactions. Data were generated during a yearlong qualitative study of literacy coaches and teachers interacting within a mid-size, suburban district in the U.S. Midwest. The researcher used a microethnographic approach to discourse …

Population Structure Of The Cuttlefish Sepia Officinalis From The North Atlantic-Mediterranean Region, Mark Joseph Nolte, Dr. Keith Crandall, Marcos Pérez-Losada

Journal of Undergraduate Research

An understanding of the relatedness of a population of organisms, or their phylogeny, combined with knowledge of that population’s geographical distribution, can illuminate which geographic forces and events may have played a role in forming the “family tree” of that organism. Therefore past speciation events and the incipient stages of speciation can be discerned when phylogenetic and geographic information is merged. This process, broadly known as the practice of phylogeography or biogeography, is important because it permits researchers to visualize the evolutionary interplay between environment and organism. Additionally, an understanding of an organism’s population structure, or family tree, enables scientists …

Creating A Geographic Information System For Nematology, Levi Hilton, Dr. Byron Adams Sep 2013

Creating A Geographic Information System For Nematology, Levi Hilton, Dr. Byron Adams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A geographic information system (GIS) is a powerful tool for correlating information that has a spatial component. This technique has been used in many different ways from organizing major corporations and services to building intricate maps. We used a GIS to help determine if there was a certain type of soil that can be correlated to specific nematode species which are used as organic pesticides in agriculture.

Propensity For Military Enlistment : A Descriptive Study Of Motivations, Claudia J. Vogelsang Sep 2013

Propensity For Military Enlistment : A Descriptive Study Of Motivations, Claudia J. Vogelsang

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The objective of this descriptive study was to identify and describe those motivations for individuals who chose to enter into the military. Motivations are important to understand as they provide insight into the values and needs of individuals. These values and needs impact an individual's Person-In-Environment fit. The study utilized an online survey to which 76 veterans or service members responded. The online survey collected demographic data such as age, gender, race and branch of service. The questionnaire then asked participants to rank a list of enlistment motivations noted in previous studies (Griffith, 2008; Woodruff, Kelty and Segal, 2007)on a …

Cultural Competence : An Exploration Of Its Translation Into Therapeutic Practice, Tsu-Yin Chang

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explores the construct of cultural competence through clients' perceptions of treatment issues encountered when working with clinicians of a differing racial background. Utilizing interviews with twelve clients of color who had worked psychotherapeutically within cross-racial dyads, this exploratory study examines clients' experiences of treatment issues in this treatment context, clients' understanding of cultural competence in psychotherapy, and their suggestions for cultivating it in clinical practice. Participants were recruited from the San Francisco Bay Area of California and sat for an hour-long audio-taped interview during which prompts designed to elicit information regarding their past treatment experiences were given. The …

Mixed-Race Studies; Misstep Or The Next Step For Ethnic Studies In A Blending Nation?, Jennifer E. Robe Sep 2013

Mixed-Race Studies; Misstep Or The Next Step For Ethnic Studies In A Blending Nation?, Jennifer E. Robe

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

In January of 2011, the New York Times reported that 2010 U.S. Census data shows that younger generations are self-reporting their racial identity as multiracial or mixed-race in higher numbers than ever before¹. Classes in higher education that engage with race and ethnicity, often but not always as part of Ethnic Studies programs in universities, discuss and critique the categorizations of race and ethnicity. However, there is a social, political and economic power and privilege that groups have in being recognized as part of a categorized racial and/or ethnic group that mixedrace or multiracial identified individuals do not have when …

Constructing The Norte Grande: Chilean Infrastructure In The Northern Border Region, 1915-1929, William Cohoon Sep 2013

Constructing The Norte Grande: Chilean Infrastructure In The Northern Border Region, 1915-1929, William Cohoon

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

The norte grande, the far north, is comprised of the provinces of Antofagasta and Tarapacá. Acquired after the War of the Pacific, 1878 to 1883, this region increased Chile by almost a third,1 and possessed valuable mineral resources, such as sodium nitrate and guano. With these resources at Chile's disposal the government realized the norte grande, despite several decades of Great Britain‟s entrepreneurship, possessed limited infrastructure. This included, but was not limited to, the ports of Antofagasta and Arica not being up-to-date with improved technology to handle modern cargo loads, as well as Chile not being able to respond militarily …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Recent global warming is acting across marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems to favor species adapted to warmer conditions and/or reduce the abundance of cold-adapted organisms (i.e., “thermophilization” of communities). Lack of community responses to increased temperature, however, has also been reported for several taxa and regions, suggesting that “climatic lags” may be frequent. Here we show that microclimatic effects brought about by forest canopy closure can buffer biotic responses to macroclimate warming, thus explaining an apparent climatic lag. Using data from 1,409 vegetation plots in European and North American temperate forests, each surveyed at least twice over an interval of …

The Myths Of G-Tech For Business Decision Making, Tin Seong Kam Sep 2013

The Myths Of G-Tech For Business Decision Making, Tin Seong Kam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

More than 80% of organisation data are location related - the locations where transactions are done, where retailers are found, and of customers who buy their products. Since the early 2005, there has been an increasing interest among the business community to use geospatial technology to enhance decision making process at both strategic and operational levels. Millions of dollars and man-hours have been invested into driving their geo-technology development and implementation. The use of geospatial technology in business, however, tends to confine to simple mapping. Many of these failures are the victims of misperception. Some of the perpetrators are practitioners. …
