Thoughts On The Complex Relation Between Linked Data, Semantic Annotations, And Ontologies, Krzysztof Janowicz, Pascal Hitzler Oct 2013

Thoughts On The Complex Relation Between Linked Data, Semantic Annotations, And Ontologies, Krzysztof Janowicz, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The relation between data, annotations, and schemata seems straightforward at first: Data are annotated with additional meta information according to some schemata in order to expose additional non-intrinsic characteristics relevant to the meaningful interpretation of said data. However, on closer examination, things are not as simple. Focusing on geo-information retrieval, we will try to disentangle the aforementioned relations. We will report from our own experience and from observations gathered by editing papers about ontologies and Linked Data for the Semantic Web journal.

How Do Firms Become Different? A Dynamic Model, Matthew Selove Oct 2013

How Do Firms Become Different? A Dynamic Model, Matthew Selove

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This paper presents a dynamic investment game in which firms that are initially identical develop assets that are specialized to different market segments. The model assumes that there are increasing returns to investment in a segment, for example, as a result of word-of-mouth or learning curve effects. I derive three key results: (1) Under certain conditions there is a unique equilibrium in which firms that are only slightly different focus all of their investment in different segments, causing small random differences to expand into large permanent differences. (2) If, on the other hand, sufficiently large random shocks are possible, firms …

Short- And Long-Term Associations Between Widowhood And Mortality In The United States: Longitudinal Analyses, J. Robin Moon, M. Maria Glamour, Anusha M. Vable, Sze Yan Liu, S.V. Subramanian

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Background

Past research shows that spousal death results in elevated mortality risk for the surviving spouse. However, most prior studies have inadequately controlled for socioeconomic status (SES), and it is unclear whether this ‘widowhood effect’ persists over time.

Methods

Health and Retirement Study participants aged 50+ years and married in 1998 (n = 12 316) were followed through 2008 for widowhood status and mortality (2912 deaths). Discrete-time survival analysis was used to compare mortality for the widowed versus the married.

Results

Odds of mortality during the first 3 months post-widowhood were significantly higher than in the continuously married (odds ratio …

Strategic Responses Arising From Divergent Foreign Policy And Trade Perspectives, Patricia L. Nemetz-Mills

Journal of Executive Education

This article examines the underlying theoretical rationale for different perspectives of foreign policy: Marxism, Wilsonian Idealism, neoconservative idealism, national interest, nationalism, isolationism, and theocracy. Various forms of trade policy are also examined as a function of foreign policy. A technique is suggested for analyzing actionable strategic responses based on foreign policy risks and resource availability. Several strategic responses are presented.

Use Of Ground Penetrating Radar For Determination Ofwater Table Depth And Subsurface Soil Characteristics At Kennedy Space Center, Gideon M. Hengari, Carlton R. Hall, Tim J. Kozusko, Charles R. Bostater

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Sustainable use and management of natural resources require strategic responses using non-destructive tools to provide spatial and temporal data for decision making. Experiments conducted at John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) demonstrate ground penetrating radar (GPR) can provide high-resolution images showing depth to water tables. GPR data at KSC were acquired using a MALÅ Rough Terrain 100 MHz Antenna. Data indicate strong correlation (R²=0.80) between measured water table depth (shallow monitoring wells and soil auger) and GPR estimated depth. The study demonstrated the use of GPR to detect Holocene and Pleistocene depositional environments such as Anastasia Formation that consists of …

Decentralization And Regional Inflation In Indonesia, Darius Tirtosuharto, Handri Adiwilaga Oct 2013

Decentralization And Regional Inflation In Indonesia, Darius Tirtosuharto, Handri Adiwilaga

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

The link between decentralization and inflation as one of the key aspects of macro economic stability has been surveyed by a number of studies and the findings are generally inconclusive. Using sample data of developing and developed countries, previous study found that decentralization correlates with lower inflation in developed countries and vice versa, it correlates with higher inflation in developing countries. The key question is what factors play a role in controlling inflation in a decentralized system. This paper is to argue that the coordination problem is the main issue in controlling inflation in a decentralized system, particularly in developing …

Alaska Wilderness League V. U.S. Epa, Maxwell Kirchhoff

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In this case, the Ninth Circuit deferred to the EPA’s interpretation of a statute concerning whether increment requirements were applicable to a temporary source pollutant. The court held that Shell Offshore, Inc. was not required to analyze the potential impact of an offshore drill barge, the Kulluk, under the Clean Air Act. Additionally, the plaintiffs’ challenge concerning the Kulluk's impact on ambient air was defeated pursuant to Resisting Environmental Destruction on Indigenous Lands, REDOIL v. EPA.

The Creative Citizen: Understanding The Value Of Design Education Programs In The Knowledge Economy, Natalie Wright, Rebekah Davis, Sam Bucolo Oct 2013

The Creative Citizen: Understanding The Value Of Design Education Programs In The Knowledge Economy, Natalie Wright, Rebekah Davis, Sam Bucolo

Learn X Design Conference Series

The knowledge economy relies on the diffusion and use of knowledge as well as its creation (Houghton and Sheenan, 2000). The future success of economic activity will depend on the capacity of organisations to transform by increasing their flexibility. In particular, this transformation is dependant on a decentralised, networked and multi-skilled workforce. To help organisations transition, new strategies and structures for education are required. Education systems need to concentrate less on specialist skills and more on the development of people with broad-based problem solving skills that are adaptable, with social and inter-personal communication skills necessary for networking and communication. This …

2013 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs Oct 2013

2013 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs

Programs

At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged with their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of their disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual …

Lds Geography On A Micro-Scale, Nathan Simmons, Dr. Samuel Otterstrom Oct 2013

Lds Geography On A Micro-Scale, Nathan Simmons, Dr. Samuel Otterstrom

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Recently the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has gained world-wide recognition for the high standards the Church promotes, but perhaps even more so for the rapid growth and expansion it has experienced. Much of this spread is due to the Church’s policy of active proselytizing, a force which fuels the spatial diffusion of church membership. It is therefore valuable to study the spatial diffusion of the LDS faith throughout the world to better understand the factors that influence the distribution of church membership throughout the world, and that promote its growth.

Utah County Government Study, Amanda K. Tammen, Dr. Richard H. Jackson Oct 2013

Utah County Government Study, Amanda K. Tammen, Dr. Richard H. Jackson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Glamorous Presidential, Senatorial, and Congressional campaigns garner airtime, contributions, and groupies. Any observant constituent would believe that the aforementioned elected officials influence their lives the most. However, local elected and appointed officials have a greater impact on residents’ lives. By far, the least understood responsibilities are those at the County level. In 1832 Alexis de Tocqueville stated, “The County becomes the great administrative center and the intermediary between the government and the plain citizen.” Today many can name their city’s mayor. But most cannot name even one of their elected county commissioners.

The Impact Of Light Rail On Land Use In The Salt Lake Valley, Kenneth K. Rencher, Dr. Richard H. Jackson Oct 2013

The Impact Of Light Rail On Land Use In The Salt Lake Valley, Kenneth K. Rencher, Dr. Richard H. Jackson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 2001 The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) completed the first phase of a new light rail system, TRAX, stretching from Downtown Salt Lake City south to Sandy. Two years later, an east-west line was added to connect to the University of Utah and the U of U Medical Center. One of the justifications for these projects was that the creation of a light rail system would be a catalyst to economic development in the areas around the tracks and stations. This study examines the initial impacts on housing densities, commercial and retail development, and property values along the existing TRAX …
