A New Floor For The Silenced?: Congolese Hip-Hop In Belgium, Idesbald Goddeeris, Jamina Mertens, Wouter Goedertier, Dominique De Brabanter
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Contrary to most other former metropoles, Belgian postcolonial memory does not provoke much turmoil. It is dominated by white narratives, which highlight Congolese gratitude and nostalgia. This article questions this discourse by analyzing hip-hop songs of Congolese artists in Belgium. Many songs deal with the urban context, but the colonial past has recently also become a major topic. Hip-hop songs give voice to hybridity and frustration, criticizing both Belgians and Congolese. Simultaneously, they reveal a great deal of ignorance among Congolese immigrants about their country’s history, for which both Congolese parents and Belgian society are blamed. All in all, hip-hop …

Editor’S Introduction: Memory, The Postcolony, And The Origins Of The Global South, Lisandro E. Claudio
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Excerpt: The global south, rather than a fixed geographic location, is better understood as a metaphor for global and interstate inequality. It can be located in between objective circumstances of global injustice and the subjective responses of people to these. On the one hand, realities like the unfair world trade regime lay the conditions for political struggle and social change. On the other hand, responses to these conditions create the political and social movements for whom the term “global south” becomes relevant. As a provisional project, intellectuals and activists on the ground are continually redefining the global south. It would …

“Subaltern” Remembrances: Mapping Affective Approaches To Partition Memory, Jacque Micieli-Voutsinas
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Theorizing affect in relationship to interdisciplinary developments among geographies of memory and subaltern studies, this essay engages the visual art of feminist artist, Pritika Chowdhry, in her latest exhibition, Remembering the Crooked Line, in order to understand the migratory nature of cultural memories as a result of global flows. Situating Chowdhry’s aesthetic contributions alongside the work of postcolonial, feminist scholar, Gayatri Spivak in “Can the Subaltern Speak?,” this essay offers a framework for understanding memory production beyond spatially-fixed and geographically bound points of reference, and theorizes how memories are produced across seemingly disparate spaces and geopolitical histories. Thus, corralling multiple …

Carlo Galli. Political Spaces And War. Trans. Elisabeth Fay, Ed. Adam Sitze. Minneapolis: University Of Minnesota Press, 2010. 304 Pp., Nicole Curato
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Excerpt: Prior to the book Political Spaces and Global War, Carlo Galli, professore ordinario at the University of Bologna, was only accessible to the English-speaking audience through references on his extensive work on the political thought of Carl Schmitt. However, in his first book translated to English, Schmitt’s conceptualization of the “political” was marginal in Galli’s discussion on the spatiality of contemporary politics. Galli argues that the politico-spatial categories of modernity—Schmitt’s friend-enemy distinction included—are now exhausted and rendered void by globalization.

Sarah Ahmed. The Promise Of Happiness. Durham: Duke University Press, 2010. 315 Pp., Dion Kagan
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Excerpt: The Promise of Happiness begins with a discussion of what Sara Ahmed called “the happiness turn” in economics and positive psychology. Books with titles like The Happiness Formula and Happiness and Economics offer to measure the happiness of individuals, groups, or entire nation-states. According to Ahmed, these books expose the performativity of happiness. As both a word and a desired state, happiness does things. Positive psychology, for example, involves “the instrumentalization of happiness as a technique” (10), reifying certain routes to happiness; economic happiness data locates and stratifies the happy over and in relation to unhappy others. Both discourses …

Student Collaboration And Teacher‐Directed Classroom Dynamic Assessment: A Complementary Pairing, Kristin Davin, Richard Donato
Student Collaboration And Teacher‐Directed Classroom Dynamic Assessment: A Complementary Pairing, Kristin Davin, Richard Donato
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article examines collaboration during small‐group tasks with young language learners studying Spanish. After five days of classroom dynamic assessment (DA) targeting WH‐question formation, students worked in small groups on a collaborative writing task. This research sought to determine whether learners were able to mediate their peers during this task and if so, whether this mediation might be traced back to participation in classroom DA. Findings revealed that students drew upon collective knowledge to complete the task. While the learners did not appropriate forms of mediation used during DA, characteristics such as repetition and first language usage appeared in peer …

Immigrant Workers, Human Capital Investment And The Shape Of Immigration Reform, Audrey Singer
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
President Obama's speech in Las Vegas last month kicked off Congressional debates on immigration policy. While border security and illegal immigration are still high profile and thorny issues, slow economic growth following the Great Recession has helped to shift the focus to how the United States can change policy to better suit economic needs. Where do immigrants fit into the labor force, how can they fit better, and what is the likely shape of future policy changes?

Arsenic In The Soils Of Northwest Oregon, Tracy Ryan Ricker
Arsenic In The Soils Of Northwest Oregon, Tracy Ryan Ricker
Dissertations and Theses
One hundred and eighty-six soil samples from Northwest Oregon were tested for arsenic content. The highest values measured were 13.9 ppm in the A horizon (site C4) and 20.4 ppm in the B horizon (Site P4). Arsenic was not detected in 28 A horizon samples and 23 B horizon samples. Data are grouped based on the age and rock type of underlying bedrock. Lithologic groups with six or more data points were compared statistically to ascertain if groups are distinct. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) multiple comparison tests indicate that the arsenic content of the Marine Sediments and Sedimentary Rocks group …

An Empirical Study Of Supreme Court Justice Pre-Appointment Experience, Benjamin H. Barton
College of Law Faculty Scholarship
This study compares the years of experience that preceded appointment to the Supreme Court for each Justice. The study seeks to demonstrate that the background experiences of the Roberts Court Justices are quite different from the Justices of earlier Supreme Courts and to persuade the reader that this is insalubrious.

eCULTURE
First year undergraduate students working on semester-long group assessments may lack the skills and knowledge to make sound choices in selecting other group members. This paper is an instructor’s guide to using speed-dating techniques in a classroom environment to create student groups. The paper also outlines suggestions for lecturers on how to support their students in the experience, based on theoretical constructs around the psychology of choice and work teams.
