The Impact Of Immigration On Portuguese Intra-Industry Trade, Nuno Carlos Leitão Mar 2013

The Impact Of Immigration On Portuguese Intra-Industry Trade, Nuno Carlos Leitão

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper investigates the relationship between intra-industry trade (IIT) and immigration flows using a gravity model for the period 2000-2010 between Portugal and European Union’s Member States (EU-27). The present study uses the methodology of Kandogan (2003) for separating IIT into its components horizontal (HIIT) and vertical intra-industry trade (VIIT). Using a panel data approach, our study find that immigration has a positive influence on Portuguese intra-industry trade. These results indicate that the immigration can reduce transaction costs between home and host country. We also consider in econometric model, the economic dimension which appears to exercise a positive effect on …

Blogging In Defense Of Themselves: Social Media Implications For Rhetorical Criticism And The Genre Of Apologia, Ramona Dee Wheeler Mar 2013

Blogging In Defense Of Themselves: Social Media Implications For Rhetorical Criticism And The Genre Of Apologia, Ramona Dee Wheeler

Theses and Dissertations

The advent of social media has provided an arena where barriers to entry are low. Individuals may persuade, question others and defend both their philosophies and their actions. This study examines the classic role of rhetorical criticism as it may apply in new media venues. A blog written by a public figure was examined through a synthesis of rhetorical criticism analyses derived from Ware and Linkugel, Vartabedian, and Downey. Four strategies and associated positioning in the practice of apologia were identified in selected blog posts, indicating the genre of apologia applies to social media apologies and extends the genre of …

Arkansas And The Death Penalty: Responses To Governor Winthrop Rockefeller's Commutations Of Fifteen Death Sentences In 1970, Andrea Lynn Ringer Mar 2013

Arkansas And The Death Penalty: Responses To Governor Winthrop Rockefeller's Commutations Of Fifteen Death Sentences In 1970, Andrea Lynn Ringer

Theses and Dissertations

As his final act as governor, Winthrop Rockefeller commuted the sentences of all death row inmates in Arkansas in 1970. This action spurred hundreds of letters from around the world. More than three hundred letters, which represented the vast majority of responses, were positive and congratulatory. However, Rockefeller received nearly one hundred uncomplimentary letters as a result of this action. The letters offered insight to various movements and events as many people connected the commutations to developments throughout the world. The letters fell into the following categories: political responses, religious responses, racial responses, social responses, victim-based responses, and responses to …

Already Gone, Manuel Fermin Hernandez Marquez Mar 2013

Already Gone, Manuel Fermin Hernandez Marquez

Theses

Already Gone is a project that explores the relationship of the photographic medium to the concepts of time and history, and the several temporal and historical layers contained within any photographic image. It is heavily influenced by photo-conceptualist practices that were introduced in the 1960s that often employed a de-skilled aesthetic, and questioned photography's intrinsic characteristics, possibilities, and limitations. Already Gone is inspired by the ideas of artistic agency in a time where the end of history and the beginning of post-history is proposed, and in the effects the demise of analog photography might have in the indexical nature of …

Picturing Leisure: Using Photovoice To Understand The Experience Of Leisure And Dementia, Rebecca Genoe, Sherry Dupuis Mar 2013

Picturing Leisure: Using Photovoice To Understand The Experience Of Leisure And Dementia, Rebecca Genoe, Sherry Dupuis

The Qualitative Report

Interviews and participant observation are commonly used to explore the experience of dementia, yet may not adequately capture perspectives of persons with dementia as communication changes. We used photovoice (i.e., using cameras in qualitative research) along with interviews and participant observation to explore meanings of leisure for persons with dementia. We discuss our photovoice process and the challenges we encountered, including ethical concerns, difficulty using the equipment, forgetting the context of photos, and questioning self. Despite challenges, photovoice aided in cuing memory, planning for the interview, sharing stories, and capturing meaning. We recommend further exploration of photovoice with this population.

Technology Law and Public Policy Clinic

Technology is essential for economic growth and job creation. Ensuring Washington has 21st century digital infrastructure, such as high-speed broadband Internet access, fourth-generation (4G) wireless networks, new healthcare information technology and a modernized electrical grid, is critical to the long-term prosperity and competitiveness of our state. The Internet is a global platform for communication, commerce and individual expression, and now promises to support breakthroughs in important national priorities such as healthcare, education and energy. Additionally, the Internet and information technology can be applied to make government more effective, transparent and accessible to all Americans.

Africa's Conflict Minerals, Toni Smith Mar 2013

Africa's Conflict Minerals, Toni Smith

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Conflict minerals are becoming a significant concern in the international community (as seen in the passage of legislature regulating and addressing them such as America’s Dodd Frank Act). Through the efforts of the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, and grassroots organizations (among others), Africa’s conflict minerals are receiving an ever increasing amount of attention. Though conflict minerals are mined in a variety of nations around the world, one nation that is endowed with all four minerals (tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold) discussed in this paper is the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Along with being a nation highly endowed with …

Poverty And The Emergent Culture Of Violence In Northern Nigeria: The Imperative Of Theatre For Development (Tfd) Intervention Strategy, Rasheedah Liman Mar 2013

Poverty And The Emergent Culture Of Violence In Northern Nigeria: The Imperative Of Theatre For Development (Tfd) Intervention Strategy, Rasheedah Liman

Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)

Recently, northern Nigeria is attracting global media attention, albeit negatively, on issues which border on leadership failure, ethno-religious conflicts, youth unemployment and official corruption. The attendant poverty in the region has created a climate of frustration and disillusionment on the part of the citizens, which, together with similar problems in other parts of Nigeria, are transmuting into threats to corporate existence. The hydra-headed phenomenon of Boko Haram, for instance, is for all intents and purposes a product of multifaceted social problems. To worsen the case, there appears to be complete failure of imagination going by the way in which both …

Building On And Honoring Forty Years Of Pbl Scholarship From Howard Barrows: A Scientometric, Large-Scale Data, And Visualization-Based Analysis, Hanjun Xian, Krishna Madhavan

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Over the past forty years, Howard Barrows’ contributions to PBL research have influenced and guided educational research and practice in a diversity of domains. It is necessary to make visible to all PBL scholars what has been accomplished, what is perceived as significant, and what is the scope of applicability for Barrows’ groundbreaking findings. As more disciplines recognize Barrows’ efforts and adopt PBL in education, it becomes crucial but challenging to sustain community memory so that PBL scholars are kept well informed of research innovations in various domains. In this paper, we review Barrows’ scholarly efforts in PBL and reveal …

Using Problem-Based Learning To Explore Unseen Academic Potential, Shelagh A. Gallagher, James J. Gallagher

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

One goal of the US Department of Education-funded Project Insights was to see if the use of Problem-based Learning (PBL) would encourage students to reveal previously unseen academic potential. Two PBL units were taught to 271 sixth grade students in 13 classrooms. Afterwards, teachers identified students who demonstrated previously unseen academic potential during the PBL units. This advanced academic potential group was compared with students identified as gifted using district criteria and the remaining sixth grade students. Measures included standardized achievement test scores, teacher ratings of students’ engagement in PBL, and independent ratings of students’ performance on specific PBL assignments. …

Promoting Positive Academic Dispositions Using A Web-Based Pbl Environment: The Globaled 2 Project, Scott W. Brown, Kimberly A. Lawless, Mark A. Boyer

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional design approach for promoting student learning, understanding and knowledge development in context rich settings. Previous PBL research has primarily focused on face-to-face learning environments, but current technologies afford PBL designers the opportunities to create online, virtual, PBL environments. The GlobalEd 2 Project is an example of a PBL environment that combines the positive characteristics of both face-to-face and online environments in a 14-week simulation of international negotiations of science advisors on global water resource issues. The GlobalEd 2 PBL environment is described examining the impact it has had on middle school students’ interest in …

Evaluating The Effects Of Road Crossing Structures On Stream-Associated Amphibians In The Wilson River Watershed, Tillamook State Forest, Oregon, Sara Erin Twitchell

Dissertations and Theses

As replacement and removal of undersized culverts gains momentum as an effective technique for restoring natural stream flows and removing fish passage barriers, it is important to evaluate the benefits of these efforts on the in-stream and adjacent riparian habitat for other species of potential concern. This study compares stream-associated amphibian (SAA) occurrence in streams adjacent to different road crossing structures on unpaved forest roads in the Wilson River watershed located within the Tillamook State Forest, Oregon. Surveys were conducted at road crossing structures for three taxa of SAA; Pacific giant salamander (Dicamptodon tenebrosus), coastal tailed frog (Ascaphus truei), and …

À Propos De Nice: Mapping A Regional / International Phenomenon For A National Stage, Rosemary O’Neill Mar 2013

À Propos De Nice: Mapping A Regional / International Phenomenon For A National Stage, Rosemary O’Neill

Artl@s Bulletin

This paper will examine the exhibition À propos de Nice catalogue (Centre Georges Pompidou, 1977) as a model of intertwining cords of regional, national, international and ethnic links in relation to the distinctive artistic practices in the region, which are firmly linked to geography and history of place. Thirty-five years after this publication, the choice of maps appears prescient on the part of Ben Vautier. With the locale’s strong affiliation with Mediterranean culture, a history of cultural diversity, and a legacy of international tourism, the French Riviera is an exemplary case study of the complexities of defining this cultural space …

Baseline Study Of The Relationship Between Green Space And Age, Chris Schulze Mar 2013

Baseline Study Of The Relationship Between Green Space And Age, Chris Schulze

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Current research on green space and human health is spread among many academic disciplines and is growing. To aid researchers and local governments in understanding the relationship between the two, this study presents a baseline analysis of the spatial relationship between green space and age. It considers how a city’s population is distributed around green space and looks at spatial and statistical patterns related to age and location. This study identifies a gap in current research and looks at green space and age in a geographic manner. The findings of this literature review and analysis provide researchers with another way …

By Whose Rules? Contemporary Art And Geography Of Art Historic Significance, Anna W. Brzyski Mar 2013

By Whose Rules? Contemporary Art And Geography Of Art Historic Significance, Anna W. Brzyski

Artl@s Bulletin

This paper will discuss the situation of ‘contemporary art’ in today’s post-totalitarian China in order to highlight the drawbacks of the narrative approach to art history that assumes cultural coherence and temporal synchronization. The analytical frame of reference is not a narrative of art’s development but the specific local (and national) conditions of its production, reception and consumption, including the relationship between China and the Eastern Bloc, which cannot be ignored in any discussion of Chinese modern and contemporary art.

Why The School Of Paris Is Not French, Robert Jensen Mar 2013

Why The School Of Paris Is Not French, Robert Jensen

Artl@s Bulletin

“Why the School of Paris is not French” explores the role geography plays in the definition of membership in the School. Noting that the School artists have an overwhelming foreign nationality, the paper asks what conditions were necessary for foreign artists to not only live and exhibit in Paris but to succeed as artists. The conclusions reached through a statistical study are that artists only began to succeed in Paris after 1900. Finally, the paper argues that the ability of foreign nationals to thrive in Paris is related to networks of relationships centered on communal studios.

Mapping Dutch Nationalism Across The Atlantic, Elizabeth Sutton Mar 2013

Mapping Dutch Nationalism Across The Atlantic, Elizabeth Sutton

Artl@s Bulletin

1648 witnessed the legal birth of the Dutch Republic, and Claes Jansz Visscher capitalized on Dutch nationalism by publishing maps of Dutch-controlled territories in Brazil and New Netherland. The maps presented a unified image of possession in both arenas and featured them as secure and stable locations worthy of investment amidst tensions in the Republic c. 1650. These maps contributed to shape a global and historical Dutch national consciousness at this critical moment of their so-called Golden Age.

Extending A Geographic Lens Towards Climate Justice, Part 1: Climate Change Characterization And Impacts, Morey Burnham, Claudia Radel, Zhao Ma, Ann Laudati

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

There has been a recent increase of interest within the academic literature on the justice issues posed by climate change and the human responses to its present and forecasted effects. This literature is partially shaped by debates from environmental justice scholarship, but also has roots in various subfields of geography. In two parts (here and in a subsequent article), we review and synthesize the recent literature by asking what climate justice concerns have been identified within three related realms: 1) the characterization of climate change itself and the assignment of responsibility for that change; 2) the differential or uneven impacts …
