Manifest Content Without A Dreamer: A Freudian Analysis Of Percival Everett’S Erasure, Irene Rose De Lilly Mar 2013

Manifest Content Without A Dreamer: A Freudian Analysis Of Percival Everett’S Erasure, Irene Rose De Lilly

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

This paper will provide a Freudian analysis of Erasure in order to prove that Everett is, in fact, the two main characters he has created, as well as attempt to challenge the stigma of interpreting through a psychoanalytical lens, rather than treating writing and literature as manifest content without a dreamer.

It's Not About The Coffee: Queer Temporalities At A Community Coffeehouse, Jodi Davis Mar 2013

It's Not About The Coffee: Queer Temporalities At A Community Coffeehouse, Jodi Davis

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

Long Beach California’s “gay ghetto” 1 is a loosely defined neighborhood with bars, coffeehouses and businesses that cater to the LGBTQ community. The corner of Broadway and Junipero roughly marks the center of the gay ghetto and is home to Hot Java “The Community Coffeehouse”. The customers there are loyal and through ethnographic inquiry this paper highlights the importance of Hot Java as a queer site of resistance and community building. Through interviews, observation, and exploration of queer theoretical models of space and time, this paper illustrates Hot Java as a queer temporal space marked by trauma, resistance, and community …

Feeble To Effeminacy: Race And Gender In The British Imperial Consciousness 1837-1901, Brett Linsley Mar 2013

Feeble To Effeminacy: Race And Gender In The British Imperial Consciousness 1837-1901, Brett Linsley

Grand Valley Journal of History

Scholars of British imperialism have given ample attention to European concepts of race and gender during the Victorian era. Much of the literature has vaguely suggested a symbiotic relationship between the concepts, but failed to assert any definitive theories. The following attempts to fill this gap by putting forward a critical interpretation of the roles that race and gender played in the imperial consciousness during this epoch. The paper demonstrates that the perceptions of race that were rampant on the imperial periphery were the unique synthesis of evolving gender identities in the Victorian metropole.

The River In A Landscape Of Creative Practice: Creative River Journeys., Kylie J Stevenson Mar 2013

The River In A Landscape Of Creative Practice: Creative River Journeys., Kylie J Stevenson

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

In my current PhD study, Creative River Journeys, I use the metaphor of the river as a data capture tool when interviewing artist-researchers about their experiences of conducting creative practice within a university context. My use of the river functions as a metaphor for the creative process. I have adapted the River Journey tool from its previous use as a map of teacher identity and professional development, and in a project about children’s musical experience. This PhD project follows a long tradition of using the river as a metaphor. For example, the river has been used in a narrative therapy …

Beyond A Reasonable Doubt: Executions Of Women In The United States, Erin Bush Mar 2013

Beyond A Reasonable Doubt: Executions Of Women In The United States, Erin Bush

Women's History in the Digital World

Digital methodologies are valuable for helping to narrow voluminous potential subjects of historical research into a scalable endeavor. In this paper, I will present a project that stemmed from an effort to understand the volume, types, timing, and geography of capital cases involving women in the United States. I applied visualization and querying techniques to data from "The Executions in the United States" database to help identify patterns in state-sanctioned executions of women between 1608 and 2002. While scholars have traditionally told the story of American executions through individual case studies, by exposing the patterns and similarities across cases involving …

Digital Diaries, Digital Tools: A Comparative Approach To Eighteenth-Century Women’S History, Bridget Baird, Cameron Blevins Mar 2013

Digital Diaries, Digital Tools: A Comparative Approach To Eighteenth-Century Women’S History, Bridget Baird, Cameron Blevins

Women's History in the Digital World

The diaries of Martha Ballard and Elizabeth Drinker are two of the best-known American sources in the field of eighteenth-century women’s history. As a rural Maine midwife, Ballard was made famous by historian Laurel Ulrich in her Pulitzer prize-winning A Midwife’s Tale. Drinker, meanwhile, was the wife of a wealthy Philadelphia Quaker and chronicled the dramatic impact of the American Revolution from a female perspective. Both diaries present historians with a staggering amount of material: thousands of entries and hundreds of thousands of words stretched across three decades. Our project uses the tools of the digital age to re-examine …

Internationalisation In A Network Environment: A Conceptual Model Of How Professional Service Firms Internationalise, Deirdre Mcquillan, Vincent Mangematin, Pamela Sharkey Scott Mar 2013

Internationalisation In A Network Environment: A Conceptual Model Of How Professional Service Firms Internationalise, Deirdre Mcquillan, Vincent Mangematin, Pamela Sharkey Scott

Conference papers

Professional service firms (“PSFs”) increasingly rely on internationalisation to drive their growth strategy. Their professional reputation and networks of relationships are critical due to the high knowledge complexity of their services. Yet international business process theory (“IB”), while identifying learning as the critical tool for addressing foreign market risk, provides little insight into how PSFs build relationships and reputation for internationalisation. Our qualitative multiple case research study of the PSF internationalisation process identified five phases of interplay between learning, relationship and reputation building. These findings extend IB theory by revealing the role of reputation and relationship building during the internationalisation …

In the case of Texas other large elements include Neotropical elements shared with Mexico and a large …

Colorado Front Range Parks Location Mapping Website, Leah Alvarado Mar 2013

Colorado Front Range Parks Location Mapping Website, Leah Alvarado

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

With current technology, using location based services has become easier than ever. There are services that can help a person find a home, save money, or even find a bathroom. In Colorado, parks are managed by the park and recreation department of a city, town, county, or by a district. Depending on the city, information on the parks that they service comes in different formats and information varies. Some department have online maps others have a map in a portable document format, and some offer no mapping but, a list of parks. Finding a park with consistent data formats and …

Mountain View Design Project, John Barney, Sue Frye, Michaele Pride Mar 2013

Mountain View Design Project, John Barney, Sue Frye, Michaele Pride

Design and Planning Assistance Center - Projects

Mountain View is a unique community bound by the Bosque and rich history of industry, agriculture, urban settlement and dispute. The boundary along 2nd Street marks the division within the community and its sense of place. It also marks a challenge to rethink the parameters of economy, ecology and welfare and reconcile the disparities between them. Our assignment was simple. Redesign 2nd Street. But along the way we realized that Mountain View holds much more meaning and purpose. This neighborhood has the potential to face its challenges through innovative, elegant design and serve as an example of a beautiful reconciliation. …

The Visual And The Law Of Cities, Stephen R. Miller Mar 2013

The Visual And The Law Of Cities, Stephen R. Miller

Pace Law Review

This article will attempt to explore, through four separate “tableaux,” or brief sketches, four ways in which the visual interplays with the law of cities, and how a deeper understanding of this intersection can assist in the development of these laws and their underlying policies. This discussion will by no means be definitive. However, by presenting these four approaches in which the visual complicates and assists the law of cities, and sometimes even acts as the law of cities, it is hoped the article will spur a dialogue on the law’s relationship to the visual.

An Architecture For Coexistence With Multiple Users In Frequency Hopping Cognitive Radio Networks, Ryan K. Mclean Mar 2013

An Architecture For Coexistence With Multiple Users In Frequency Hopping Cognitive Radio Networks, Ryan K. Mclean

Theses and Dissertations

The radio frequency (RF) spectrum is a limited resource. Spectrum allotment disputes stem from this scarcity as many radio devices are con confined to a fixed frequency or frequency sequence. One alternative is to incorporate cognition within a configurable radio platform, therefore enabling the radio to adapt to dynamic RF spectrum environments. In this way, the radio is able to actively observe the RF spectrum, orient itself to the current RF environment, decide on a mode of operation, and act accordingly, thereby sharing the spectrum and operating in more flexible manner. This research presents a novel framework for incorporating several …

An Analysis Of Cost Premiums And Losses Associated With Usaf Military Construction (Milcon), Daniel L. Blomberg Mar 2013

An Analysis Of Cost Premiums And Losses Associated With Usaf Military Construction (Milcon), Daniel L. Blomberg

Theses and Dissertations

Military construction (MILCON) represents 40% of the federal government's $30 billion construction budget. The federal budget is fixed; therefore, any cost overages likely affect project scope or requirements. This study investigated if MILCON procurement costs more than private industry construction and if so, what causes the cost premiums. A combination of in-depth literature review, expert interviews, a unique case study, expert surveys, and geospatial statistical analysis answered the research question. The case study evaluated two nearly identical projects to determine how internal factors affect MILCON cost premiums. This study confirmed the existence of MILCON cost premiums. Additionally, 11 major cost …

Using Geographic Information Systems To Evaluate Energy Initiatives In Austere Environments, D. Jason Murley Mar 2013

Using Geographic Information Systems To Evaluate Energy Initiatives In Austere Environments, D. Jason Murley

Theses and Dissertations

Organizations that operate in austere environments at the end of long logistics chains face significant energy challenges which often represent financial and security vulnerabilities. Reducing fuel consumption in these operations causes a proportional fuel reduction throughout the supply system as the need for transportation of fuel is reduced. Accordingly, the total fuel reduction across the supply system should be considered to capture the fully burdened cost savings when conducting economic analysis of energy reduction initiatives. This research examined the energy savings potential of improving the thermal properties of expeditionary shelters, and then evaluated these measures using a fully burdened cost …

The Strategic Effects Of Counterinsurgency Operations At Religious Sites: Lessons From India, Thailand, And Israel, Timothy L. Christopher Mar 2013

The Strategic Effects Of Counterinsurgency Operations At Religious Sites: Lessons From India, Thailand, And Israel, Timothy L. Christopher

Dissertations and Theses

With the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center buildings, the intersection of religious ideals in war has been at the forefront of the American discussion on war and conflict. The New York attacks were followed by the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan in October of 2001 in an attempt to destroy the religious government of the Taliban and capture the Islamic terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, and then followed by the 2003 invasion of Iraq, both in an attempt to fight terrorism and religious extremism. In both instances, American forces became embroiled in counterinsurgency operations against insurgent fighters who …

An Empirical Assessment Of The Performance And Competitive Effects Of Los Angeles County Charter Schools, Sam Trachtman Mar 2013

An Empirical Assessment Of The Performance And Competitive Effects Of Los Angeles County Charter Schools, Sam Trachtman

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper evaluates the performance of charter elementary schools in Los Angeles County in three ways. First, I compare charter school performance to public school performance, controlling for a number of key characteristics. Second, I study the characteristics that appear to influence charter school success as compared to public school success. Third, I study the “competitive effect” of charter schools, examining how geographical proximity to charter schools affects the performance of traditional public schools. I find evidence that, ceteris paribus, traditional public schools score higher than charter schools, except in majority African American schools. Further, I find that the opening …

The Role Of The Global Cryosphere On The Fate Of Organic Contaminants., Amanda M. Grannas, Christian Bogdal, Kimberly J. Hageman, Frank Wania

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The cryosphere is an important component of global organic contaminant cycles. Snow is an efficient scavenger of atmospheric organic pollutants while a seasonal snowpack, sea ice, glaciers and ice caps are contaminant reservoirs on time scales ranging from days to millennia. Important physical and chemical processes occurring in the various cryospheric compartments impact contaminant cycling and fate. A variety of interactions and feedbacks also occur within the cryospheric system, most of which are susceptible to perturbations due to climate change. In this article, we review the current state of knowledge regarding the transport and processing of organic contaminants in the …
