Guidance In Feature Extraction To Resolve Uncertainty, Boris Kovalerchuk, Michael Kovalerchuk, Simon Streltsov, Matthew Best Jun 2013

Guidance In Feature Extraction To Resolve Uncertainty, Boris Kovalerchuk, Michael Kovalerchuk, Simon Streltsov, Matthew Best

Computer Science Faculty Scholarship

Automated Feature Extraction (AFE) plays a critical role in image understanding. Often the imagery analysts extract features better than AFE algorithms do, because analysts use additional information. The extraction and processing of this information can be more complex than the original AFE task, and that leads to the “complexity trap”. This can happen when the shadow from the buildings guides the extraction of buildings and roads. This work proposes an AFE algorithm to extract roads and trails by using the GMTI/GPS tracking information and older inaccurate maps of roads and trails as AFE guides.

“Moral Influence” In Asia: Political Practice And Electoral Corruption In The Spanish Philippines, Juan Antonio; Inarejos Jun 2013

“Moral Influence” In Asia: Political Practice And Electoral Corruption In The Spanish Philippines, Juan Antonio; Inarejos

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Proceeding from a microhistory of local elections at the end of the nineteenth century in one municipality, thisarticle traces the mechanisms of representation and exercise of local power in the Spanish Philippines. Within the colonial apparatus the municipal sphere was one of the few areas of tangible power for the principalía (indigenous elites). The local elites, who were selected by colonial authorities based on political, economic, and religious criteria, played an important role in the fealties and resistances in the colony. Thisarticle examines the significance of the Maura Law, or the electoral reforms of 1893, and the obstacles encountered in …

Gray Love The Career Of Gov. John Early In The Cordilleras, Shelton; Boise Woods

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Unlike the usual portrayals of racism of American colonial officials in the Philippines, thisarticle explores the career of John Early, a mid-level official who rose to become the governor of the Mountain Province in 1922 until his death in 1932. In 1911 he had served as lieutenant governor of Bontoc but was fired, according to his memoir, for defending the rights of the indigenous highlanders against unfair American colonials. Early’s rather unorthodox rise in the colonial government included actions that at times appear to contradict the prevailing thoughts of the day. Thearticle asserts the complex nature of human motives. Keywords: American …

Russian Attitudes Toward Us Foreign Policy: From The Cold War To Today, Kelsey Simons, Dr. Tony Brown Jun 2013

Russian Attitudes Toward Us Foreign Policy: From The Cold War To Today, Kelsey Simons, Dr. Tony Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In matters of international politics today, Russia is the wildcard. Its history of power on the international stage, along with an impressive military and large sphere of influence give it a commanding presence, even as it still struggles to find its identity after a swift political and economic change following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is increasingly important to pay attention to Russia, and therefore it is equally important to know the standing the US has in that country. There is no doubt that the US has had a major impact on Russia in the last twenty years. …

Millenniums And Messiahs: Literature Review In Messianic Religions In Context Of The Hmong Diaspora, John Whitton, Dr. Joacob Hickman Jun 2013

Millenniums And Messiahs: Literature Review In Messianic Religions In Context Of The Hmong Diaspora, John Whitton, Dr. Joacob Hickman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Initially, the research proposed consisted of two sections constituting the last two semesters of my undergraduate education. The first included collecting published sources regarding millenarianism and messianism within the larger global context and organizing them into a database. The second included systematically cataloging each source in the database for future analysis, not only for Dr. Hickman’s personal use but also for the larger academic and professional community. These circles will encompass the study of nationalism, religion, globalization, and in Dr. Hickman’s specific use, the Hmong diaspora and generational views of morality.

Division Of Labor And Marital Satisfaction In China And Taiwan, Bryan C. Kubricht Jun 2013

Division Of Labor And Marital Satisfaction In China And Taiwan, Bryan C. Kubricht

Theses and Dissertations

There is evidence that household division of labor is associated with marital satisfaction among Chinese populations. However, little research has compared different Chinese societies, as well as non-rural and rural regions. This study compared the division of household labor, and its association with marital satisfaction, between China and Taiwan, between non-rural and rural regions, and between males and females using data from a large, multinational study of countries in East Asia. The moderating effect of gender role ideology was examined as a potential moderating variable, as well. Overall, division of household labor was significantly associated with marital satisfaction. However, gender …

Money Laundering Detection Framework To Link The Disparate And Evolving Schemes, Murad Mehmet, Duminda Wijesekera, Miguel F. Buchholtz Jun 2013

Money Laundering Detection Framework To Link The Disparate And Evolving Schemes, Murad Mehmet, Duminda Wijesekera, Miguel F. Buchholtz

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Money launderers hide traces of their transactions with the involvement of entities that participate in sophisticated schemes. Money laundering detection requires unraveling concealed connections among multiple but seemingly unrelated human money laundering networks, ties among actors of those schemes, and amounts of funds transferred among those entities. The link among small networks, either financial or social, is the primary factor that facilitates money laundering. Hence, the analysis of relations among money laundering networks is required to present the full structure of complex schemes. We propose a framework that uses sequence matching, case-based analysis, social network analysis, and complex event processing …

Ectoparasites Of The Virginia Opossum (Didelphis Virginiana), Raccoon (Procyon Lotor), And Striped Skunk (Mephitis Mephitis) From Keith County, Nebraska, Lance A. Durden, Dennis J. Richardson Jun 2013

Ectoparasites Of The Virginia Opossum (Didelphis Virginiana), Raccoon (Procyon Lotor), And Striped Skunk (Mephitis Mephitis) From Keith County, Nebraska, Lance A. Durden, Dennis J. Richardson

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Six Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana), nine raccoons (Procyon lotor) and one striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) collected from Keith County Nebraska were examined for ectoparasites. All three host species were parasitized by adults of the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis. Opossums were also parasitized by the flea Pulex simulans and the tiny fur mite Didelphilichus serrifer; the latter species represents a new state record for Nebraska. Raccoons were also parasitized by P. simulans and by the lagomorph-associated flea Euhoplopsyllus glacialis affinis, whereas the skunk was also parasitized by the chewing louse Neotrichodectes …

Clean And Dirty International Technology Diffusion, Valentina Bosetti, Elena Verdolini Jun 2013

Clean And Dirty International Technology Diffusion, Valentina Bosetti, Elena Verdolini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper investigates the role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection and Environmental Policies (EPs) on clean (renewable) and dirty (fossil-based) technology diffusion from top-innovators. IPR protection and EPs are extensively debated policy tools, as IPR protection addresses knowledge market failure, while EPs respond to pressing local and global environmental externalities. A model of monopolistic competition inspired by the recent trade literature shows that the profits associated with exporting a blueprint are a function of the quality of the idea and of market and institutional characteristics of the receiving country. We test the empirical implications of our model using patent …

Cancer Prevention Research Center Faculty Publications

Background: Human papillomavirus is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection in the United States and is associated with 70% of cervical cancers as well as over 90% of genital warts. Although the HPV vaccine appears in the US immunization schedule during adolescence, a large percentage of women reach adulthood without being vaccinated. The Transtheoretical Model’s (TTM) Processes of Change (POC) construct provides an assessment of participants’ experiences with HPV vaccination and is a central component of computer-tailored interventions designed to increase compliance with medical recommendations, such as vaccination. This study describes development and validation of a POC measure for increasing …

Artifice, The Semiosphere, And Counter-Consciousness (Or) A Model For A Counter-Design And Design Research, Joshua Singer

Nordes Conference Series

If we are to find a future in the practice of design (this paper limits itself to graphic design and design research) which aims to assist in the evolution of culture (as opposed to perpetuating the “closed” stabilizing system of culture and language, the persistent heterogeneity, conventions and givens), design might pivot (a designerly thing, as simple as to turn as a slight of hand or as a playful manipulation as in Détournement) to a critical and discursive practice of counter-design. Abandoning the territory of commercial practice for an experimental counter-practice, design becomes an active agent in the “open” system …

Towards A Manifesto For Methodological Experimentation In Design Research, Henry Mainsah, Andrew Morrison Jun 2013

Towards A Manifesto For Methodological Experimentation In Design Research, Henry Mainsah, Andrew Morrison

Nordes Conference Series

This paper argues that design research may benefit from investigations, explorations and innovations in the means of conducting and of conveying design research from qualitative methods in the social sciences. The paper examines how inter-disciplinary and intermethodological experimentation as a mode of knowledge building. At the end of the paper we draw out a manifesto that proposes potential actions concerning design research methods which ought to be applicable for designers and design researchers, but also for social scientists engaging with the changing nature of production-related inquiry and critique in which design increasingly features.

Strategic Evaluation Of University Knowledge And Technology Transfer Effectiveness, Thien Anh Tran Jun 2013

Strategic Evaluation Of University Knowledge And Technology Transfer Effectiveness, Thien Anh Tran

Dissertations and Theses

Academic knowledge and technology transfer has been growing in importance both in academic research and practice. A critical question in managing this activity is how to evaluate its effectiveness. The literature shows an increasing number of studies done to address this question; however, it also reveals important gaps that need more research. One novel approach is to evaluate the effectiveness of this activity from an organizational point of view, which is to measure how much knowledge and technology transfer from a university fulfills the mission of the institution. This research develops a Hierarchical Decision Model (HDM) to measure the contribution …

Using Car (Concept, Action, Reflection) In The Disciplines To Connect The Local And Global, Kelsey Halbert, Wendy Li, Theresa Petray

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Service learning responds to calls for higher education to engage with community and to develop more active-learning strategies in undergraduate education. This Panel Presentation highlights the use of service learning within the disciplines of sociology, psychology and education at an Australian university. The CAR (Concept, Action, Reflection) model employed includes conceptual development within the discipline, an opportunity for action that is situated in the local and global community and critical reflection. CAR builds on existing service learning pedagogical frames and presents interdisciplinary perspectives. This panel aims to stimulate discussion about modes of community-based learning in higher education curriculum. The first …

Economic Growth And Employment From 1990-2010: Explaining Elasticities By Gender, Bret Anderson, Elissa Braunstein Jun 2013

Economic Growth And Employment From 1990-2010: Explaining Elasticities By Gender, Bret Anderson, Elissa Braunstein

Economics Faculty Publications

In this article we estimate the growth elasticity of employment by gender for 160 countries during 1990-2010. We then econometrically model these elasticities to draw out the structural contexts in which gendered employment outcomes respond differently to growth, including measures of economic structure, demographic change, macroeconomic stability, global stance and policy, and income distribution and institutional development. Our investigation shows that the relative size of the service sector and the ratio of female to male labor force participation are key determinants of differences in employment elasticities by gender, creating higher elasticities for women than men. We also find that the …

Glacier Change In The North Cascades, Washington: 1900-2009, Kristina Amanda Dick Jun 2013

Glacier Change In The North Cascades, Washington: 1900-2009, Kristina Amanda Dick

Dissertations and Theses

Glaciers respond to local climate changes making them important indicators of regional climate change. The North Cascades region of Washington is the most glaciated region in the lower-48 states with approximately 25% of all glaciers and 40% of the total ice-covered area. While there are many on-going investigations of specific glaciers, little research has addressed the entire glacier cover of the region. A reference inventory of glaciers was derived from a comparison of two different inventories dating to about 1958. The different inventories agree within 93% of total number of glaciers and 94% of total ice-covered area. To quantify glacier …
