The Competitive Dynamics Of A Firm's Capacity Position And Inventory Leanness Activities: Evidence From Us Manufacturing Industries, Rajat Mishra
Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive
The notion of `perennial gale of creative destruction' by Schumpeter and Austrian economics has been researched in the field of strategic management to study the competitive dynamics among firms' rivalrous activities. However, its application is sparse in operations management. With the advancement of the field and the increasing pressure on the firms, the strategies regarding operations planning and control are argued to be not just internal according to the conventional norms of operations management, but these strategic moves will be impacted by the moves of their immediate rivals. This competitive imitation is studied in the areas of inventory management and …

Feasibility And Acceptability Of An Ipad Application To Assess Symptom Clusters In Adolescents With Cancer, Lauri Linder, Jeanne Erickson, Kristin Stegenga, Nancy Fugate Woods, Suzanne Ameringer, Pamela S. Hinds, Catherine Fiona Macpherson
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Tuesday, July 23, 2013:
Purpose: Adolescents with cancer (AWC) experience multiple co-occurring interrelated disease- and treatment-related symptoms. A newly-developed iPad application, the Computerized Symptom Capture Tool (C-SCAT) uses a heuristics approach to explore symptom clusters. The C-SCAT combines graphical images and free text responses, empowering individuals to identify symptom clusters from their unique perspectives. This approach shifts the paradigm for studying symptom clusters to an inductive approach that considers how individuals interpret and give meaning to their clusters of symptoms. We present the feasibility and acceptability of the C-SCAT among AWC receiving chemotherapy.
Methods: 32 AWC at …

Session presented on: Tuesday, July 23, 2013:
Purpose: The purpose of the research study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a delirium prevention bundle in reducing the incidence of delirium in hospitalized critically ill adult patients.
Methods: A prospective, interventional cohort study was conducted in two similar medical surgical ICU units in a large, tertiary care facility in southeast Texas. Data collection included use of: the RASS 1, a dichotomous scoring system that ranges from +4 agitation to -4 sedation; the CAM-ICU2-6 , a bedside test that assesses for delirium; and a researcher-generated Delirium Data Collection Tool.
Results: Sample size …
Symptom Clusters In Patients Who Ruled Out For Acute Coronary Syndrome: Age Matters, Holli A. Devon, Anne G. Rosenfeld
Symptom Clusters In Patients Who Ruled Out For Acute Coronary Syndrome: Age Matters, Holli A. Devon, Anne G. Rosenfeld
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:
Purpose: Patients with potential acute coronary syndrome (ACS) make a decision to present to the emergency department (ED) partially based on symptoms. Differentiating which patients have ACS and require cardiac evaluation presents a diagnostic conundrum. Empirically derived symptom profiles could assist in risk stratification. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to examine the influence of age on subgroups of patients with similar symptom clusters who presented to the ED with symptoms suggestive of ACS who subsequently ruled out.
Methods: A sample of 318 patients (148 women; 170 men) was recruited from 3 …

Aromatherapy For Pain, Emotional Distress And Sleep Quality In Cancer Patients Receiving Hospice Care: A Meta-Analysis, Chi-Hsuan Asphodel Yang, Feng-Yi Lai
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Friday, July 26, 2013:
Individuals with cancer not only experience physiological discomforts but also psychological disturbances. Therefore, in addition to conventional medical therapies, complementary therapies are also widely accepted. Aromatherapy is now one of the mostly used therapies in palliative care unit. A comprehensive systematic review was conducted to determine the effects of aromatherapy on (a) pain, (b) emotional distress and (c) sleeping quality in cancer patients receiving hospice care. Keywords such as aromatherapy, hospice care, pain, emotional distress and sleeping quality were used to search related literatures at databases including CINAHL, MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, CEPS, …
Nursing Students In A Global Learning Environment: Creative Teaching Strategies On Culture, Emotion And Communication, Dalit Wilhelm, Cheryl Zlotnick
Nursing Students In A Global Learning Environment: Creative Teaching Strategies On Culture, Emotion And Communication, Dalit Wilhelm, Cheryl Zlotnick
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:
Purpose: In this increasingly global environment, it is essential that faculty help nursing students with strategies to understand cultures different from their own. Communication includes the ability to understand the cultural context and emotion. This was a challenge for undergraduate nursing students originating from a culture that internalizes and modulates emotion culture, who are placed into a culture that externalizes emotion. Beach et al., systematic review on cultural competence states working globally requires "establishing effective interpersonal and working relationships that supersede cultural differences." Yet, international students need to cope with many cultural differences; …
Suffering Had Enough: Family Caregivers' Experiences Of Patients With Terminal Illness At The End-Of-Life, Sujatha Shanmugasundaram
Suffering Had Enough: Family Caregivers' Experiences Of Patients With Terminal Illness At The End-Of-Life, Sujatha Shanmugasundaram
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013:
Introduction: Many literatures proved that it is a great challenge for the family members caring for the terminally ill person at home. With an ageing population and increasing the rate of disability and incidences of cancer, and the growth in community care, the role of the caregivers has expanded and changed over the recent years. Many terminally ill patients also prefer to die at home and spend their final stage of life with their family members. It is not surprising therefore that family caregiving has been the major focus of the research not …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013:
Purpose: In recent years, empowerment and momentum that has made professional nursing, is derived from the incorporation of evidence into clinical practice, not being evidence delegated by medicine, but the practice that promotes evidence based nursing. This new approach requires prior knowledge of the attitude with which the profeionales of nursing welcome the evidence-based practice by providing the right tools to address barriers.
Methods: To achieve the objectives of this study is a review inclusive of scientific literature. Articles were selected from Medline, Cochrane and Scopus. The limit was 3 years temporary. The …
Adaptation Of A Best Practice Model For Recognition And Treatment Of Postpartum Depression In A Private Obstetrics Practice, Vicki E. Long
Adaptation Of A Best Practice Model For Recognition And Treatment Of Postpartum Depression In A Private Obstetrics Practice, Vicki E. Long
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:
Depression in women is tied to phases of reproduction, with the postpartum period highlighted as critical (Yonkers, et al., 2009). This period may be marred by feelings of low self-worth, disassociation with mothering, with the risk of maternal or fetal harm (Byatt, Simas, Lundquist, Johnson & Ziedonis, 2012; Nonacs, 2006). In a meta-analysis done by Bennett and colleagues, the incidence of postpartum depression (PPD) ranged from 10 - 20 %, with 12% often quoted as average (Bennett, Einarson, Taddio, Koren & Einarson, 2004). Screening to identify at-risk women is used worldwide employing various …

Stigma in sickle cell disease (SCD) was appraised via pilot study for instrument development, testing for face validity and preliminary psychometrics.
Methods: Community Based Participatory Research methods were used to select 42 participants for survey and feedback. The authors adapted the likert type stigma scale from the epilepsy literature, developing two surveys, one for the individual and one for caregiver/family member. …
Modeling The Relaxation Time Of Dna Confined In A Nanochannel, Douglas R. Tree, Yanwei Wang, Kevin D. Dorfman
Modeling The Relaxation Time Of Dna Confined In A Nanochannel, Douglas R. Tree, Yanwei Wang, Kevin D. Dorfman
Faculty Publications
Using a mapping between a Rouse dumbbell model and fine-grained Monte Carlo simulations, we have computed the relaxation time of λ-DNA in a high ionic strength buffer confined in a nanochannel. The relaxation time thus obtained agrees quantitatively with experimental data [Reisner et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 196101 (2005)] using only a single O(1) fitting parameter to account for the uncertainty in model parameters. In addition to validating our mapping, this agreement supports our previous estimates of the friction coefficient of DNA confined in a nanochannel [Tree et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 228105 …
