Willow: Reaching Hiv-Positive African-American Women Through A Computer-Delivered Intervention, Charles H. Klein

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study evaluates the efficacy of Multimedia WiLLOW in enhancing HIV-protective sexual behaviors and psychosocial outcomes among HIV-positive African American women, including condom use for vaginal and anal sex, and psychosocial mediators associated with risk reduction practices. Using a community-based randomized controlled design, 168 participants completed a baseline and follow-up assessment as well as an exit satisfaction survey. Intervention participants reported significantly higher proportions of condom protected sex acts in the past 30 days (p=.002), with both HIV-negative (p=.040) and HIV-positive (p=.003) partners. They were also more likely to report 100% condom use (OR = .10; p=.030); a lower adjusted …

Seeking Mutual Benefit: University And Districts As Partners In Preparation, Amy Daggett Petti

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article reports the research findings of a qualitative study that employs case study research methods to examine a newly-formed university district- teacher union partnership. Examination of the question "How do we better prepare teachers" led to the formation of a university-district-association (teacher union) partnership, which led to a new question: How do the roles of principal and liaison in a Professional Development School affect pre-service and tenured teacher learning? The school-university partnerships' mission was to design a mutually beneficial program of teacher preparation and tenured teacher professional development. Findings determined that there were significant perceived mutual benefits; notable benefits …

Putting The Heart Back Into Writing: Nurturing Voice In Middle School Students, Barbara Ruben, Leanne Moll

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

To gain a deeper understanding of young adolescent motivation and developmental needs as the nation plunges ahead with the national Common Core Standards and their implications for writing instruction, the authors of this article pondered five questions as they studied their own middle school writing team: (1) What intrinsic motivators drive these young students to write? (2) What components create a nurturing writing environment? (3) How can we understand student motivation so that we can nurture student interest in writing within the constraints of large classes and mandates to address Common Core Standards? (4) For students who are already intrinsically …

Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice & The 'Productions' Of National Identity In The Face Of The Other, Eder Jaramillo Nov 2013

Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice & The 'Productions' Of National Identity In The Face Of The Other, Eder Jaramillo

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This examines the development of England’s national identity from the middle to the end of the sixteenth century, and specifically the role that its nascent imperial projects in the New World play in that development. As the questions of nationhood surface during Mary’s turbulent reign, these in turn prompt England’s ambivalence in openly emulating a proposed Spanish colonial model. This ambivalence is turned into a positive strength during the reign of Elizabeth I, where the question of her marriage becomes an essential tool to keep foreign powers guessing and hoping for an alliance. My analysis of England’s developing imperial identity …

Bilingual Language Switching And Selection At The Phonetic Level: Asymmetrical Transfer In Vot Production, Daniel J. Olson Nov 2013

Bilingual Language Switching And Selection At The Phonetic Level: Asymmetrical Transfer In Vot Production, Daniel J. Olson

School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

The present study examines the effect of language switching on phonetic production, contributing to an understanding of the underlying interaction between a bilingual’s two phonetic systems. While phonetic interaction has been studied in non-switched and codeswitched paradigms, effects of connected speech (e.g. speech planning, pragmatics, etc.) may obscure underlying phonetic interaction. To investigate the impact of language switching, a cued picture-naming task was employed, with Spanish-English bilinguals of differing dominance profiles naming pictures in English and Spanish. Stimuli were produced both as switched and non-switched tokens. Addressing the impact of context, stimuli were presented in three contexts varying in quantity …

Achieving World Trade Organization Compliance For Export Processing Zones While Maintaining Economic Competitiveness For Developing Countries , James J. Waters Nov 2013

Achieving World Trade Organization Compliance For Export Processing Zones While Maintaining Economic Competitiveness For Developing Countries , James J. Waters

Duke Law Journal

Export processing zones (EPZs) are statutorily created investment parks that developing countries establish to attract foreign investment in exchange for government-granted fiscal incentives. At their core, EPZs are a quid pro quo between host governments and investor companies: in exchange for the promise of job creation, technological transfer, economic development, and compliance with export performance requirements, investor companies receive substantial fiscal incentives, such as tax and tariff exemptions.

Most EPZ statutes are inconsistent with Article 3.1(a) of the World Trade Organization's Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (SCM Agreement) because EPZ incentives qualify as prohibited export subsidies. Fortunately, many developing …

Constraint-Based Automatic Symmetry Detection, Shao Jie Zhang, Jun Sun, Chengnian Sun, Yang Liu, Junwei Ma, Jin Song Dong Nov 2013

Constraint-Based Automatic Symmetry Detection, Shao Jie Zhang, Jun Sun, Chengnian Sun, Yang Liu, Junwei Ma, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present an automatic approach to detecting symmetry relations for general concurrent models. Despite the success of symmetry reduction in mitigating state explosion problem, one essential step towards its soundness and effectiveness, i.e., how to discover sufficient symmetries with least human efforts, is often either overlooked or oversimplified. In this work, we show how a concurrent model can be viewed as a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP), and present an algorithm capable of detecting symmetries arising from the CSP which induce automorphisms of the model. To the best of our knowledge, our method is the first approach that can automatically detect …

Predicting User's Political Party Using Ideological Stances, Swapna Gottopati, Minghui Qiu, Liu Yang, Feida Zhu, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Predicting users political party in social media has important impacts on many real world applications such as targeted advertising, recommendation and personalization. Several political research studies on it indicate that political parties’ ideological beliefs on sociopolitical issues may influence the users political leaning. In our work, we exploit users’ ideological stances on controversial issues to predict political party of online users. We propose a collaborative filtering approach to solve the data sparsity problem of users stances on ideological topics and apply clustering method to group the users with the same party. We evaluated several state-of-the-art methods for party prediction task …

Substrate-Dependent Dynamics Of Udp-Galactopyranose Mutase: Implications For Drug Design, Leonardo Boechi, Cesar Augusto F. De Oliveira, Isabel Da Fonseca, Karina Kizjakina, Pablo Sobrado, John J. Tanner, J. Andrew Mccammon

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease that represents one of the major health challenges of the Latin American countries. Successful efforts were made during the last few decades to control the transmission of this disease, but there is still no treatment for the 10 million adults in the chronic phase of the disease. In T. cruzi, as well as in other pathogens, the flavoenzyme UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) catalyzes the conversion of UDP-galactopyranose to UDP-galactofuranose, a precursor of the cell surface b-galactofuranose that is involved in the virulence of the pathogen. The fact that …

Mining Branching-Time Scenarios, Dirk Fahland, David Lo, Shahar Maoz Nov 2013

Mining Branching-Time Scenarios, Dirk Fahland, David Lo, Shahar Maoz

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Specification mining extracts candidate specification from existing systems, to be used for downstream tasks such as testing and verification. Specifically, we are interested in the extraction of behavior models from execution traces. In this paper we introduce mining of branching-time scenarios in the form of existential, conditional Live Sequence Charts, using a statistical data-mining algorithm. We show the power of branching scenarios to reveal alternative scenario-based behaviors, which could not be mined by previous approaches. The work contrasts and complements previous works on mining linear-time scenarios. An implementation and evaluation over execution trace sets recorded from several real-world applications shows …

Automatic Recommendation Of Api Methods From Feature Requests, Ferdian Thung, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Julia Lawall Nov 2013

Automatic Recommendation Of Api Methods From Feature Requests, Ferdian Thung, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Julia Lawall

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developers often receive many feature requests. To implement these features, developers can leverage various methods from third party libraries. In this work, we propose an automated approach that takes as input a textual description of a feature request. It then recommends methods in library APIs that developers can use to implement the feature. Our recommendation approach learns from records of other changes made to software systems, and compares the textual description of the requested feature with the textual descriptions of various API methods. We have evaluated our approach on more than 500 feature requests of Axis2/Java, CXF, Hadoop Common, HBase, …

Dynamic Nanochannels For Biosensing Applications, Joseph B. Oxborrow Nov 2013

Dynamic Nanochannels For Biosensing Applications, Joseph B. Oxborrow

Theses and Dissertations

Inexpensive label-free detection of biomarker panels in serum could revolutionize earlycancer diagnosis and treatment. Such detection capabilities may be possible with dynamicnanochannels in conjunction with electrical impedance measurement. In Dr. Greg Nordin's lab I designed, fabricated and tested several iterations of these sensors with polydimethyl-siloxane microfluidics. The final design yielded a dynamic nanochannel array sensor thatshowed a 140% impedance change when exposed to 14µM bovine serum albumin in phos-phate buffered saline. For the geometry and noise limits of the tested device, simulationsindicated that a minimum detectable concentration of 20pM with specifically bound strep-tavidin should be possible. However, the polydimethylsiloxane approach …

Opportunities For Non-Degree Executive Education In Taiwan, Robert Winsor, Annie Liu, Xiaoyan Yu, Kim Huynh-Willis

Marketing & Business Law Faculty Works

Few organizations today have remained untouched by globalization. Whether they are in direct competition with multinational businesses or simply experiencing the pressure of operating within a large competitive universe, virtually all firms now operate in a global economy. As a result of this global competition, U.S. and foreign executives alike have been confronted with the need to broaden their conceptualization and understanding of the impacts of these trends. In response to these needs, both universities and independent training organizations have developed innovative programs for executive training and education. Observers predict that demand for this type of education will grow substantially …
