Predicting Career Outcome Measures Using An Internship Evaluation Instrument: The Internship Profiling Questionnaire, Christopher Terao Silva Nov 2013

Predicting Career Outcome Measures Using An Internship Evaluation Instrument: The Internship Profiling Questionnaire, Christopher Terao Silva

Theses and Dissertations

Internships have become an integral part of post-secondary education, while also serving as a means for students to distinguish themselves as job candidates. Although internship programs have formally been in place for over a hundred years, surprisingly little research has been done into the topic, even though more than three out of four students participate in at least one internship before they graduate college. The purpose of this study is to develop and test an internship evaluation tool that will help educators distinguish the high quality internship opportunities from low quality ones. Based on management profiling questionnaires that became popular …

Identifying Optimal It Portfolios To Promote Healthcare Quality, Kenneth Pinaire Nov 2013

Identifying Optimal It Portfolios To Promote Healthcare Quality, Kenneth Pinaire

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Healthcare organizations continue to make large investments in health information technology to improve quality of care and lower costs. Therefore, there is an ever-growing need to have an ever-clearer understanding of how IT investments impact these organizations. However, there are no methodologies designed to identify and then leverage these effects to promote healthcare quality. In this research, I present an extensive review of the literature on the impact of health information technology on the quality of care. A research gap is identified where past studies have explored the impact of individual technologies or aggregate all technologies based on overall investment, …

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

In 2012 alone, almost 400,000 veterans enrolled in college and used GI Bill benefits for the first time (McGovern 21). Several thousand more are anticipated to enroll in college within the next few years as nearly two million veterans return from overseas (Sander 2). The goal of this thesis is to show composition professors the extreme re-adjustment that is required for veterans returning not only to civilian life but especially to academia. Although veterans have been enrolling in college for decades, this thesis focuses solely on the influx of recent war veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. …

Eritrean Customary Laws: ‘Old-Modern’ Treasures For Introducing An Effective Sentencing Regime – The “Just Desert” System, Habteab Y. Ogubazghi, Senai W. Andemariam

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Modern criminal justice has often been criticized for the lack of uniformity in sentencing caused principally by the lack of easily identifiable categorization of offences by the degree of their severity and wide range in the sentences set for offences. The ‘Just Desert’ sentencing system has recently been favored as a workable solution. It is acclaimed to guarantee the establishment of fair, proportional, uniform, predictable and efficient criminal justice system. The authors identified elements of just desert in the Eritrean customary laws that just desert can be a sentencing choice fitting to the values and norms of the Eritrean people. …

Exploring Trust In Perception Of Crime Models In South Africa, Kyshawn Smith, Leroy Hamilton Jr. Nov 2013

Exploring Trust In Perception Of Crime Models In South Africa, Kyshawn Smith, Leroy Hamilton Jr.

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Social capital has been poked and prodded by scores of intellectuals across a vast array of disciplines since 18th century Progressive L.J. Hanifan first coined the term (Hanifan 1916), and its resurgence in popularity over the last 30 years has fueled much contemporary discourse in the social sciences. Particularly in criminology, scores of studies conducted during this period articulate the positive and negative effects of social capital in the creation and maintenance of safe, healthy communities and civil social structures (Jacobs 1961; Coleman 1990; Putnam 2000; White N.d.). However, while conceptually social capital and the components of which it is …

Seeding Green Roofs With Native Grasses, Richard K. Sutton Nov 2013

Seeding Green Roofs With Native Grasses, Richard K. Sutton

Landscape Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

During six years of native grass establishment and growth on four green roofs, we sought to understand appropriate seeding seasons and spacing, the amount of time to reach the industry 80% coverage threshold (FLL 2008), the seed yield projections for volunteer plant infill. We also produced and tested methods for successfully and inexpensively seeding and determined “as needed” irrigation protocols. The suite of techniques examined improves and enhances the use, establishment, and management of native grasses on green roofs and reduces green roof costs.

Leaving A Legacy, Walter Lotze Nov 2013

Leaving A Legacy, Walter Lotze

Human Rights & Human Welfare

The ongoing conflict in Somalia, and the complexities that come with finding lasting solutions to a conflict that has raged for decades now, continue to perplex the international community. While a range of previously tried and tested approaches to conflict management are being applied, it is becoming apparent that the international toolkit for responding to conflict situations of such complexity is extremely limited. Indeed, as one international conference after another on Somalia takes place, compacts are signed and funding windows established, old frameworks are abandoned and new ones are forged, and roadmap after roadmap pave the way for further engagement, …

Somali Battlegrounds: On Interest And Accountability, Ines Mzali Nov 2013

Somali Battlegrounds: On Interest And Accountability, Ines Mzali

Human Rights & Human Welfare

In the wake of the latest and deadliest of Al-Shabab's attacks in Kenya since Kenyan troops entered Somalia in October 2011, Ben Rawlence reiterates the question raised anew by each attack: "What is Kenya doing in Somalia and is it worth the price?" The question leads him to explore the contradiction between the official objectives of the mission and Kenya's particular motivations to launch an offensive of its own. This problematic discrepancy also draws attention to the question of accountability when violations of international humanitarian law have occurred in the context of a military operation by a neighboring country and …

Urban Responses To Climate Change: Theories And Governance Practice In Cities Of The Global South, Dirk Heinrichs, Kerstin Krellenberg, Michail Fragkias

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cities around the world have recently started to become ‘proactive’ initiators of climate strategies containing both mitigation and adaptation elements. The experience of these first movers has been studied and documented both empirically and, to a lesser extent, theoretically, primarily for cities in the global North. This symposium addresses related knowledge gaps by exploring case studies of urban regions in the global South confronting their projected climate change challenges, showcasing the experiences of Delhi, Santiago de Chile and Bogotá. Its specific aim is to explore the urban social response to nature change, the adaptation challenges faced by cities across the …

Herrick's Wild Civility, Martin Corless-Smith

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

When one reaches for a book to take on a trip there might be any number of reasons for making a choice, but undoubtedly preeminent for me is company. I find that more often than not I take Herrick. And I have wondered why this is. Part of the reason is that he is at once familiar, and so I bring the familiar with me as one might a friend, but he remains somewhat enigmatic. I have been reading his Hesperidesfor longer than I care to recall, and it is not as if I haven't finished reading it so …

Konsep Maslahah Dalam Keperluan Rawatan Dan Aplikasinya Dalam Rawatan Materniti, S.K. Ismail, R. Ahmad, A. Abd Ghani Nov 2013

Konsep Maslahah Dalam Keperluan Rawatan Dan Aplikasinya Dalam Rawatan Materniti, S.K. Ismail, R. Ahmad, A. Abd Ghani

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Legal Substitution And Experiential Transformation In The Typology Of Leviticus, Part 1, Roy E. Gane Nov 2013

Legal Substitution And Experiential Transformation In The Typology Of Leviticus, Part 1, Roy E. Gane

Faculty Publications

Some Christians emphasize the idea that Christ’s sacrifice accomplished a legal substitution, but they largely overlook the effect of experiential transformation. Others do the opposite, emphasizing a change of experience resulting from Christ’s sacrifice, but downplaying the concept that Christ served as our Substitute. The present research demonstrates that in the typology of the book of Leviticus, which serves as a background to the explanation of Christ’s sacrifice in the book of Hebrews, both legal substitution and experiential transformation are clearly present and fully necessary. In part 1 of this two-part article, we will examine the evidence for legal substitution …

Understanding A Globally Unique Nexus Of Acid Mine Drainage, Karst And World Heritage Site, National Cave And Karst Research Institute

KIP Articles

The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (COH WHS), South Africa, is the only UNESCO-protected karst landscape in the world that is under threat from acid mine drainage (AMD). This has generated wide and considerable concern for the preservation of the fossil sites and karst ecosystems of the WHS. A recent assessment of the water resources environment and continued water resources monitoring has better informed this situation, providing support for management efforts to protect the aquatic environment and outstanding universal value of the site. Allogenic recharge of AMD (salinity 300 mS/m, pH 4, Mn ~30 mg/l) at ~18 megalitres/d and …

Prioritizing Caves For Karst Invertebrate Recovery In Central Texas, National Cave And Karst Research Institute Nov 2013

Prioritizing Caves For Karst Invertebrate Recovery In Central Texas, National Cave And Karst Research Institute

KIP Articles

Prioritizing caves known to contain endangered karst invertebrates in central Texas is more challenging than one may think. Here, we outline a strategy to achieve this goal while thinking of what is best for these species including addressing future impacts from climate change, and what works for landowners that are bound to permit restrictions. For example, there are two entities in the Austin, Texas area that hold regional Section 10(a) (1)(B) incidental take permits issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. When developing the Habitat Conservation Plan for one of these permits several years ago, they listed several caves …
