Carlo Galli. Political Spaces And War. Trans. Elisabeth Fay, Ed. Adam Sitze. Minneapolis: University Of Minnesota Press, 2010. 304 Pp., Nicole Curato

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: Prior to the book Political Spaces and Global War, Carlo Galli, professore ordinario at the University of Bologna, was only accessible to the English-speaking audience through references on his extensive work on the political thought of Carl Schmitt. However, in his first book translated to English, Schmitt’s conceptualization of the “political” was marginal in Galli’s discussion on the spatiality of contemporary politics. Galli argues that the politico-spatial categories of modernity—Schmitt’s friend-enemy distinction included—are now exhausted and rendered void by globalization.

Sarah Ahmed. The Promise Of Happiness. Durham: Duke University Press, 2010. 315 Pp., Dion Kagan

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: The Promise of Happiness begins with a discussion of what Sara Ahmed called “the happiness turn” in economics and positive psychology. Books with titles like The Happiness Formula and Happiness and Economics offer to measure the happiness of individuals, groups, or entire nation-states. According to Ahmed, these books expose the performativity of happiness. As both a word and a desired state, happiness does things. Positive psychology, for example, involves “the instrumentalization of happiness as a technique” (10), reifying certain routes to happiness; economic happiness data locates and stratifies the happy over and in relation to unhappy others. Both discourses …

Maria Do Mar Castro Verala, Nikita Dhawan, And Antke Engel, Eds. Hegemony And Heteronormativity: Revisiting “The Political” In Queer Politics. Farnham, Burlington, Vt: Ashgate, 2011. 224 Pp., Stuart Richards

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: Maria do Mar Castro Varela, Nikita Dhawan and Antke Engel’s Hegemony and Heteronormativity presents a very complex analysis of “the political” in queer politics. From the outset, the editors define the object of study, “wherein ‘the political’ does not denote the sphere of politics, but the processes, regimes or logics of language, knowledge and power inherent in doing politics” (1; their emphasis). The collection of essays expands and creates a dialogue between two significant categories of queer politics: hegemony and heteronormativity. Indeed, it is the aim of this collection to rethink queer theory in terms of these concepts, “so …

The Perceived Effect Of Hiv/Aids On Other Identities, Lisa M. Baumgartner, Eric Niemi Feb 2013

The Perceived Effect Of Hiv/Aids On Other Identities, Lisa M. Baumgartner, Eric Niemi

The Qualitative Report

The onset of a chronic disease influences other roles or identities. For example, an HIV or AIDS diagnosis can affect a person’s work identity (Bedell, 1997). In this article, we explored how living with HIV/AIDS shapes other identities. Thirty - six individuals living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) participated in semi - structured interviews. Participants’ work, sexuality / intimacy, spirituality, advocate, self - esteem, addict/recovering addict and parent identities changed after being diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. In general, respondents’ advocate and recovering addict identities emerged and gained salience after being diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. Further research on how HIV/AIDS affects …

Sustainability Education, Or Educating Sustainably?, Angus Stewart Feb 2013

Sustainability Education, Or Educating Sustainably?, Angus Stewart

eCULTURE

"Many universities teach programs in sustainable energy, but should they be incorporating theories and practice of sustainability across many disciplines? The argument is proposed that institutes of higher education should be primary vehicles of change in our transition towards a sustainable future. It is discussed that this can occur at the institutional and curriculum level. Integrating concepts of sustainability within a biomedical discipline area is discussed with strategies exemplified to lift awareness within student groups and for teaching and support staff."

Assessing The Developmental Instruction Model: An Exploratory Study Of Classroom “Fit” Using Environmental Types, Daniel W. Salter Feb 2013

Assessing The Developmental Instruction Model: An Exploratory Study Of Classroom “Fit” Using Environmental Types, Daniel W. Salter

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

To support the instructional process, Knefelkamp advanced the developmental instruction model (DIM) to describe the aspects of academic environments that facilitate the epistemological development of college students, consistent with the Perry scheme. No related measurement tool has been developed for the DIM, which may account for the lack of research on it. Because the four DIM constructs (experiential, diversity, personalization, and structure) seemed consistent with the four dimensions found in environmental type theory (extraversion–introversion, sensing–intuition, thinking–feeling, and judging–perception), its related measure, the Salter Environmental Type Assessment, was used. The assertion that advanced learners begin to recognize these four dimensions was …

Participation, Representation And Voice In The Fight Against Gender Violence: The Case Of The Women’S Movement In Spain, Adriana Sandu Feb 2013

Participation, Representation And Voice In The Fight Against Gender Violence: The Case Of The Women’S Movement In Spain, Adriana Sandu

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article provides a critical examination of ‘whiteness’ and notions of ‘sisterhood solidarity’ in the context of women’s fight against gender violence in Spain. Drawing on intersectionality theory this article focuses on how different women’s organisations deal with gender violence policy in Spain, how this debate is framed, who makes the claims, and what structural inequalities are being preserved in this process. Using qualitative interviews with women activists, observations and participation in meetings and debates of women’s organisations in Madrid and Barcelona during 2007-2008, this research explores the inter-relations between majority and minority women’s mobilization, organization, political influence and voice. …

International Dimensions Of Discrimination And Violence Against Girls: A Human Rights Perspective, Yvonne Rafferty Feb 2013

International Dimensions Of Discrimination And Violence Against Girls: A Human Rights Perspective, Yvonne Rafferty

Journal of International Women's Studies

In many cultures, being born female can consign the girl child to the peripheries of society where her safety is denied and her human rights are routinely violated. At each and every stage of development, girls are more likely than boys to confront a host of disadvantages associated with discrimination and violence, although the social norms and cultural rules that influence girls are most intensely felt as she struggles to develop into adulthood. At the onset of puberty, or even before, some girls are pulled out of school and forced into early marriage and high-risk pregnancy. Others become victims of …

Exploiting The Values Of Indigenous Knowledge In Attaining Sustainable Development In Nigeria: The Place Of The Library, Omawumi O. Makinde, Oludare A. Shorunke Mr Feb 2013

Exploiting The Values Of Indigenous Knowledge In Attaining Sustainable Development In Nigeria: The Place Of The Library, Omawumi O. Makinde, Oludare A. Shorunke Mr

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Since independence Nigeria has been making concerted efforts towards the attainment of sustainable development under the aegis of various development programs, but little success has been achieved, since development is based only on the utilization of the western systems of knowledge. This paper therefore explores ways of achieving sustainable development by harnessing the untapped benefit embedded in the indigenous knowledge systems. Indigenous knowledge which we see as the knowledge systems held by traditional communities and is based on their experience and adaptation to a local culture and environment is relevant for development especially in agriculture, medicine, crafts, theatre, natural resources …

The Value Of Foreign Languages In Business Communication, Racquel Moreau

MBA Student Scholarship

There are several factors that a company considers when deciding to operate in an international territory or with a foreign company. Factors such as language and culture greatly affect the success of business. Being able to effectively communicate ideas and strategies can be challenging in a new business environment. Determining the importance of language by a company is crucial to its success. Studying another language helps to understand the culture of the studied language which will assist in a corporation’s decision making process. English is a popular language in conducting business; however, communicating in other languages is gaining popularity. The …

Supervisor-Subordinate Directional Age Differences And Employee Reactions To Formal Performance Feedback: Examining Mediating And Moderating Mechanisms In A Chinese Sample, Gabriela Burlacu Feb 2013

Supervisor-Subordinate Directional Age Differences And Employee Reactions To Formal Performance Feedback: Examining Mediating And Moderating Mechanisms In A Chinese Sample, Gabriela Burlacu

Dissertations and Theses

As a result of changing demographic trends in today's workforce, employees of all ages can now be found in all career stages. Consequently, the pairing of a younger supervisor with a relatively older employee is becoming increasingly more common. Research in the United States has shown that such demographically "non-normative" pairings have negative implications for employee attitudes and behaviors, and thus for employee performance management. However, little is known about the effects of such pairings in other nations and cultures, despite the fact that these demographic shifts are occurring on a global level. As such, this study examined the effects …

Artistic Representations Of The Sea And Coast: Implications For Sustainability, Laura Stocker, Deborah Kennedy Feb 2013

Artistic Representations Of The Sea And Coast: Implications For Sustainability, Laura Stocker, Deborah Kennedy

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

This article explores artistic representations of Australian seas and coasts, and the power of art to sustain seas and coasts. Research into artworks at the National Gallery of Australia was supplemented with a study of other local public and private works. A number of substantive themes emerged in viewing the paintings; the sea and coast has been represented as: sea country, sovereign territory, sublime spaces, a Romantic space of yearning, a psychological journey, a literal journey, a site of social and political comment, social places, ecological places and a site for industry. We discuss these themes, reflecting on the various …

Botanic Field Aesthetics: A Methodology Of Embodied Research Into Indigenous Southwest Flora, John Ryan Feb 2013

Botanic Field Aesthetics: A Methodology Of Embodied Research Into Indigenous Southwest Flora, John Ryan

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

This article describes two prongs of a larger research approach I have termed botanic field aesthetics‘, which begins with living plants in their biodiverse habitats to create embodied poetic representation. The methodology has been designed to materialise and poeticise research into indigenous flora. As components of a broader qualitative field approach, both poetic enquiry and gestural walking constitute specific engagements with plants. The use of poetry and walking aims to show the possibility of an embodied aesthetics of plants and a progression from a visual floral aesthetics to an corporeal floraesthesis, from ocular speculation to multi-sensory experience, and from a …

Of the Orthomyxoviridae family of viruses, only influenza A viruses are thought to exist as multiple subtypes and has nonhuman maintenance hosts. In April 2011, nasal swabs were collected for virus isolation from pigs exhibiting influenza-like illness. Subsequent electron microscopic, biochemical, and genetic studies identified an orthomyxovirus with seven RNA segments exhibiting approximately 50% overall amino acid identity to human influenza C virus. Based on its genetic organizational similarities to influenza C viruses this virus has been provisionally designated C/Oklahoma/1334/2011 (C/OK). Phylogenetic analysis of the predicted viral proteins found that the divergence between C/OK and human influenza C viruses was …
