The Relationship Between Science And Government In Iran: A Historical Perspective, Maryam Shamsaie, Mohd Hazim Shah Abdul Murad
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Researchers here at this point to define the relationship between the government actions and the process of scientific activities. It can be also narrated in this way: How do politician’s attitudes, policies and decisions impact the scientific arena? In common wisdom, the functions of science and thinking in a closed society with a closed government is absolutely affected and is therefore canalized in the best case and even nonexistent as a result of suppression of free, independent thoughts in the worst scenario. In this paper we shall look at the relationship between Islam, science and government in Iran from a …

Novel 3d Electrospun Scaffolds With Fibers Oriented Randomly And Evenly In Three Dimensions To Closely Mimic The Unique Architectures Of Extracellular Matrices In Soft Tissues: Fabrication And Mechanism Study, Shaobo Cai, Helan Xu, Qiuran Jiang, Yiqi Yang
Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications
In this work, novel electrospun scaffolds with fibers oriented randomly and evenly in three dimensions (3D) including in the thickness direction were developed based on the principle of electrostatic repulsion. This unique structure is different from most electrospun scaffolds with fibers oriented mainly in one direction. The structure of novel 3D scaffolds could more closely mimic the 3D randomly oriented fibrous architectures in many native extracellular matrices (ECMs). The cell culture results of this study indicated that, instead of becoming flattened cells when cultured in conventional electrospun scaffolds, the cells cultured on novel 3D scaffolds could develop into stereoscopic topographies, …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Inner ear sensory hair cells die following exposure to aminoglycoside antibiotics or chemotherapeutics like cisplatin, leading to permanent auditory and/or balance deficits in humans. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are used to study drug-induced sensory hair cell death since their hair cells are similar in structure and function to those found in humans. We developed a cisplatin dose-response curve using a transgenic line of zebrafish that expresses membrane-targeted green fluorescent protein under the control of the Brn3c promoter/enhancer. Recently, several small molecule screens have been conducted using zebrafish to identify potential pharmacological agents that could be used to protect sensory hair cells …

Student Perceptions Of Effective Foreign Language Teachers: A Quantitative Investigation From A Korean University, Bruce D. Barnes, Graeme Lock
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Abstract: The present study uses a questionnaire instrument to measure the importance that students from a Korean university place on a wide range of effective foreign language teacher attributes. Respondents to the present study placed high importance on rapport attributes such as friendliness, care, and patience; and delivery attributes which included the provision of clear explanations, error correction, and a participatory mode of instruction. Impartiality, target language knowledge, and good preparation were attributes also rated highly. The results also provided insights into student opinions about various instructional issues, such as the selective use of the students’ first language, explicit grammar …

A Case Study Of Bilingual Student-Teachers’ Classroom English: Applying The Education-Linguistic Model, Jinghe Han, Jun Yao
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper explores the practicum experience of a group of bilingual student-teachers who taught Chinese using English to learners of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) in Western Sydney schools. Specifically it explores how these student-teachers used English as the instructional language in class and what strengths and weaknesses they demonstrated compared to their host teachers. Data were collected through observing and audio-recording the participants’ teaching, aiming to capture the actual features of their English use in class. The data were structurally-coded employing the ELM categories. Discourse analysis was employed to interpret and understand the language use of the bilingual …

OBJECTIVE: To compare functional outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using 2 graft techniques and to determine factors affecting these outcomes. METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive patients with ACL injuries surgically treated at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia between November 2003 and February 2011 were retrospectively assessed. Reconstruction was with bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft in 16 patients (BPTB group) and hamstring soft tissue autograft in 18 patients (ST group). Data were collected at an average of 3.5+/-1.75 years post-operatively, which included Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores, and an 18 point …
The Potential Rise Of An Islamist Youth Within 25 January Revolts: A Case Study Of The Muslim Brotherhood Youth, Dina Hosni
Theses and Dissertations
The thesis endeavors to offer a fresh perspective on the potential rise of Islamist youth, focusing on the pro-change ex-current MB youth as a potential subculture within 25 January and the assumption of the Egyptian MB to power. To validate this hypothesis, Gramsci's theory on hegemony and counter-hegemony has been deployed to study the rise of pro-change MB youth against Mubarak's authoritarian regime on the state level in tandem with counter-hegemony against the strict al-samc w-al-ṭāca principle (i.e. blind obedience) on the organizational level. Elements of social movement theory have been used to substantiate the relevance of counter-hegemony, namely, Gamson's …

Mlipir: The Genesis Within Relations Of Production Between Industrial Sector And Rural Society, Rahardika Arista Utama
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
This paper examines how the interactions between industrial development actors in rural setting reflect the internal dynamics of Third World countries that maintain dependence on developed countries. The diverse discussion on the impact of industrialization which mostly emphasized on particular issues is difficult to depict the comprehensive situation on the impacted society. Further analysis which recognized the existence of the mutual relations among state, market, and society is necessary to best describe the invisible but essential impact of industrialization. Thus, this paper argues that inequality is the essential impact of industrialization which has been emerged in various form of social …

There are numerous Islamic actors whom undertook significant role in establishing Indonesian society understanding toward Islam. One of them is Ahmad Syafii Maarif, one of the Islamic figures who evokes Indonesian muslim optimism toward democracy. Through sociology of knowledge framework, this research will take a look on the formation process of Ahmad Syafii Maarif’s Islamic thought. Sociology of knowledge is considered to be the appropriate framework due to the interconnectivity it provided between historical, philosophical, and sociological framework in investigating knowledge formation. However, though being utilized in this research for its extensiveness, the framework tends to stress the connection between …
Teori Kekuasaan Michel Foucault: Tantangan Bagi Sosiologi Politik, Abdil Mughis Mudhoffir
Teori Kekuasaan Michel Foucault: Tantangan Bagi Sosiologi Politik, Abdil Mughis Mudhoffir
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
Power is often discussed in political discourse or in political sociology. In this context, power is understood as the attribution, capacity, or capital to achieve certain goals of the owners. Foucault does not reject this argument, but this perspective would not be able to expose the invisible subjugation. The more critical view of power appears in cultural studies. Gramsci’s concept of hegemony is often used to dismantle the cultural establishment in the process of domination that was veiled. The more sophisticated findings, power has surpassed even the hegemonic ways, which is factually or coined by Foucault as governmentality. This paper …

Mencari Makna Pembangunan Sosial: Studi Kasus Sektor Informal Di Kota Solo, Paulus Wirutomo
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
The present development concept has been widely criticized for being too sectoral and growth oriented. A new concept like Human Development introduced by the United Nation is a good alternative, but it is still sectoral in nature. This article tries to offer a more sociological concept of development, since it is based on the contention that to develop human being we have to develop its society. It means to develop “the basic elements of socio-cultural life” namely: the structural, cultural and processual elements. By analyzing the data on the informal sector in Solo collected with SSM methodology, I have come …

The Borderpsychosocial Development Project: Is There A Specific Psychosocial Consciousness That Frames Development For Border Women?, María Gloria Munguía Wellman
American Studies ETDs
Often placed at the center of psychotherapeutic training rhetoric are the notions of cultural sophistication, competency, and responsiveness; however, these notions are often pushed to the margins of practice. This qualitative and interdisciplinary community project explores an important strand of psychosocial development that has always already existed, but had yet to be named. Psychosocial consciousness develops, through time, as a natural human response to our day-to-day experiences and encounters. These experiences and encounters form, reinforce, and perpetuate systems of understanding of self and others which profoundly impact our experience in the world. The exploration of the psychosocial development of a …
Savage Fakes: Misdirection, Fraudulence, And Autobiography In The 1920s, Whitney Purvis Rakich
Savage Fakes: Misdirection, Fraudulence, And Autobiography In The 1920s, Whitney Purvis Rakich
American Studies ETDs
In the 1920s, Americans grew increasingly interested in the figure of the primitive man, who was championed as the antidote to civilization's weakening effects on the modern human spirit. Concurrently in the field of American Studies, Vernon Lewis Parrington theorized about the effects of the "broad currents" of American life. the return to a primitive, natural self was just such a “broad current” of the day. With primitive conduct as the potential salve for civilized humanity, a handful of American authors of the 1920s used fake autobiographies to articulate the savage internal self. In the four texts that comprise this …

Factors Influencing Success In U.S. Resident-Government Online Transactions, Matthew Garcia
Public Administration ETDs
This study aims to contribute an additional perspective to the body of e-Government research that may aid future studies by theorists and practitioners to improve and innovate the ways in which they use online systems to engage their constituents. U.S. governments have implemented e-Government systems for 20 years, however little credence has been given to the question of how successful stakeholders are in completing tasks using e-Government systems. Tested factors include socio-demographic and socio- economic characteristics, as well as characteristics of civic participation, citizen feelings about the role of government, Internet access methods, and information channels to highlight the myriad …

The Social Construction Of Frivolity, Rodger A. Bates, Emily B. Fortner
The Social Construction Of Frivolity, Rodger A. Bates, Emily B. Fortner
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Leisure is a continuum of behavior from normative to deviant. Some forms of leisure reflect widely shared cultural norms while others reflect only marginal or sub-cultural acceptance. Within this continuum, we label some harmless forms of non-traditional behavior frivolity. The social construction of frivolity is tempered by time, place, social class and tradition. In addition, frivolity can be a two-edged sword, defining the abnormal as normal or the normal as abnormal.
Anthropologists document the functional nature of frivolity as a safety-valve to the pressures of conformity. Sociologists explore how patterns of interaction are altered or suspended in response to special …

Ethical Leadership In Kazakhstan: An Exploratory Study, A. Michael Conrad
Ethical Leadership In Kazakhstan: An Exploratory Study, A. Michael Conrad
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This study measured ethical leadership perceptions utilizing a new corporate culture scale in a Central Asian country. Ethical leadership ratings from 103 Kazakhstani employees were used to determine how they perceived their managers in terms of being moral people and moral managers. Results indicate that managers are perceived as relatively weaker moral managers as compared to moral persons. Holding employees accountable for their actions is the lowest rated aspect of the moral manager. Definitions of moral persons and moral managers in Kazakhstan vary somewhat from an American culture-oriented ethical leadership model. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

The Closing Of The Ether: Communication Policy And The Public Interest In The United States And Great Britain, 1921-1926, Seth Ashley
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
How do media systems come to be structured in different ways? Through a comparative historical institutional analysis of the origins of broadcasting policy in the United States and Great Britain in the early twentieth century, this study examines reasons private, commercial interests dominated the U.S. system while Britain granted a monopoly to the publicly funded, noncommercial BBC. Policy outcomes at this critical juncture were contingent on different path-dependent notions of the public interest as well as temporal sequencing. Through an analysis of primary documents and secondary literature, this study considers the implications of these different approaches for modern communication policy …
The Cowboy Hero In American Fiction: Myth And Realism In The Virginian And Lonesome Dove, Lindsay Lane Penn
The Cowboy Hero In American Fiction: Myth And Realism In The Virginian And Lonesome Dove, Lindsay Lane Penn
Student Theses and Dissertations
A cultural icon and national myth, the cowboy has been a hero of American fiction for more than one hundred and fifty years. The emergence of the Western hero in dime novels of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries combined with the Western motion picture boom of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s created a cowboy myth, one that often features tall, dark, and handsome gunslingers in picturesque surroundings. As with all myths, debunking is inevitable, and the late twentieth century began the current trend toward Western realism in which the appearance, duties, personality, and environment of the cowboy are depicted …

Satisfaction In Adult Romantic Relationships After Parental Divorce : The Role Of Locus Of Control, Meghan L. Mole
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Previous research has found that parental divorce influences both locus of control (LOC) and relationship satisfaction, and LOC also influences relationship satisfaction; therefore, LOC may play a mediating role in the relationship between parental divorce and relationship satisfaction. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the relationship between LOC and satisfaction in adult romantic relationships, comparing participants from intact and divorced families of origin. The influence of gender, age when parents divorced, and current age was also explored based on the following hypotheses: that parental divorce during early childhood would yield a more external LOC while parental divorce …
