Bioremediation Mariculture In Zanzibar, Tanzania: A Viability Assessment Of Using Bath Sponge And Pearl Oyster Farms To Filter Highly Olluted Waters In The Zanzibar Channel, Hayley Oakland

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Bioremediation of polluted water off the coastline of the urban center of Zanzibar—Stone Town, Unguja—was assessed for implementation feasibility through bath sponge and pearl oyster mariculture. A vast research base of the city’s coastal area exists, including the pollution concentrations at various locations, the ramifications of this pollution on the fringing ecosystems, and the relevant water circulation system of eddies and passageways produced by the north flowing East African Counter Current. In following the experimental examples of bioremediation projects around the world, this study tested facets of the filtration abilities of marine sponges and oysters. Both organisms suggested strong pollution …

Towards Safe And Sensitive Schools: A Participatory Action Research Project, Maya Menon, Shankar Venkatagiri, Misbah Shahid, Shipra Suneja

Working Papers

India's schools have been frequently evaluated along parameters that are focused on the quality of their facilities, and less often, the effectiveness of the instruction. There are no published studies that concern the social and emotional environment that envelops a child at school. This paper summarises a participatory action research program that was undertaken by three schools in that state of Karnataka, India. The goal of the yearlong intervention was to measure and enhance the safety and sensitivity of their environments. The Whole School Ecosystemic Model formed the basis of the intervention. The paper begins by highlighting three key aspects …

Cultural Negotiations, David L. Browman Apr 2013

Cultural Negotiations, David L. Browman

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

This meticulously researched reference work documents the role of women who contributed to the development of Americanist archaeology from 1865 to 1940. Between the Civil War and World War II, many women went into anthropology and archaeology, fields that, at the beginning of this period, welcomed and made room for amateurs of both genders. But over time, the increasingly professional structure of these fields diminished or even obscured the contributions of women due to their lack of access to prestigious academic employment and publishing opportunities. As a result, a woman archaeologist during this period often published her research under her …

Stories And Minds, Lars Bernaerts, Dirk De Geest, Luc Herman, Bart Vervaeck

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

How do narratives draw on our memory capacity? How is our attention guided when we are reading a literary narrative? What kind of empathy is triggered by intercultural novels? A cast of international scholars explores these and other questions from an interdisciplinary perspective in Stories and Minds, a collection of essays that discusses cutting-edge research in the field of cognitive narrative studies. Recent findings in the philosophy of mind and cognitive psychology, among other disciplines, are integrated in fresh theoretical perspectives and illustrated with accompanying analyses of literary fiction.

Pursuing such topics as narrative gaps, mental simulation in reading, …

Elder Selection: Engaging The Monterey Church Of Christ In A Collaborative Elder Selection Process, Benjamin D. Pickett Apr 2013

Elder Selection: Engaging The Monterey Church Of Christ In A Collaborative Elder Selection Process, Benjamin D. Pickett

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This doctor of ministry thesis presents the outcomes of a project intended to foster greater collaboration at the Monterey Church of Christ in its selection of elders. The intervention involved the engagement of the Monterey Church in a process that involved multiple steps. These steps involved engagement with teachers in the context of a teacher training seminar, with Bible classes in a series of Bible lessons, and with elders, elder nominees, and their spouses in order to discern the perceived degree to which Monterey members participate in the elder selection process. The Bible lessons presented an alternative model for theological …

Why We Travel: Picturing Global Mobility In User-Generated Travel Journalism, Katie Day Good Apr 2013

Why We Travel: Picturing Global Mobility In User-Generated Travel Journalism, Katie Day Good

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Travel journalism provides unique insights into changing notions of culture, media, and mobility. This study examines ‘Why we travel,’ a New York Times collection of over 2000 reader-submitted photos and captions about travel. To locate trends within this multi-authored text, the author refers to the theories of tourism scholars MacCannell and Urry to distinguish between enduring and emergent travel representations. The former include unequal distributions of certain subject matter across regions, emphasis on ‘authentic’ touristic experiences, and visual methods for minimizing signs of western culture. Within the same collection, however, emergent representations feature ‘new’ tourisms, highly reflexive portraits of tourists, …

Horizons Of Inclusion: Life Between Laws And Developments In Rio De Janeiro, Maria Clara Dias, Luis Eslava Apr 2013

Horizons Of Inclusion: Life Between Laws And Developments In Rio De Janeiro, Maria Clara Dias, Luis Eslava

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

In this article we explore current debates about social inclusion in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. Through a comparison of two initiatives that aim to redress socio-economic segregation in Rio, we analyse the ontological position that these programs adopt towards their subjects, paying particular attention to the programs’ assumptions regarding the legality and development status of residents in informal neighbourhoods. Our aim is to demonstrate how some social inclusion programs recognize and respect the diversity and life experience of marginalized subjects, whereas other nominally successful programs do not achieve such objectives. In our view, such recognition ensures that …

The Phenomenon Behind The Bite: Altercasting As It Applies To Apple Technology, Elizabeth Baldwin

Masters Theses

This paper investigates how the brand Apple markets their product so that consumers feel obligated to buy their product. By looking at five main categories of brand loyalty, environmentally friendly practices, being up-to-date with technology, pricing with value and customer service, this paper will rhetorically analyze how successful of a job it does. To get an inside look at what the public thought on the the way that Apple fulfilled their altercasting this paper analyzed what people said about Apple verses competing technology brands. By drawing overall conclusions, recording trends and making observations about the way that people had been …

“A Wobbly Bed Still Stands On Three Legs”: On Chinese Immigrant Women’Sexperiences With Ethnic Community, Hsin-I Cheng Apr 2013

“A Wobbly Bed Still Stands On Three Legs”: On Chinese Immigrant Women’Sexperiences With Ethnic Community, Hsin-I Cheng

Communication

Through in-depth interviews with Chinese working-class immigrant women, this study highlights the meanings of their Chinatown community and adjustment to U.S. life. By adopting a phcnomenological approach, three themes based on the trope of the American Dream emerged that illustrated these women's experiences with compounded immobilities, structural injustice, and racial antagonisms. Nonethless, the interviews evidence resilience in the theme of a "wobbly bed" with implications for national immigration policies and intercultural communication models.

Representasi Warga Tionghoa Dan Kecinaan Dalam Media Kontemporer Indonesia, Ezmieralda Melissa Apr 2013

Representasi Warga Tionghoa Dan Kecinaan Dalam Media Kontemporer Indonesia, Ezmieralda Melissa

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

‘Kami Juga Punya Suara’: Dunia Blogging Buruh Migran Indonesia Di Hong Kong Sebagai Politik Budaya, Pratiwi Retnaningdyah

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

"People Don't Attack You If You Dress Fancy": Consuming Femininity In Contemporary China, Sally Mcwilliams Apr 2013

"People Don't Attack You If You Dress Fancy": Consuming Femininity In Contemporary China, Sally Mcwilliams

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Twenty-first-century Chinese cities are spaces not only of architectural hybridity displaying the co-temporality of the dynastic past and the postsocialist future but also locales in which young women perform and negotiate the polyvalent discourses of what it means to be a woman in China. When many students in U.S. college classrooms are asked to offer images of Chinese women, the most frequent (and in some instances pernicious) representations are those of the lotus-footed woman, the state-indoctrinated Maoist revolutionary, the dutiful mother who must adhere to the draconian one-child law, or the young athlete from the dour state-run sports training facilities. The …

Future Foreign Language Teachers’ Intercultural Competence, Andrew Baalerud Apr 2013

Future Foreign Language Teachers’ Intercultural Competence, Andrew Baalerud

Masters Theses

There is a lack of research regarding the implications for foreign language study and intercultural competence. Scholars suggest that foreign language proficiency plays a role in cultivating intercultural competence, but agree that there is a lack of empirical evidence supporting this notion. Research also shows that foreign language teachers are ethnocentric. Many educators and foreign language programs use a framework developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) to promote language learning. This framework also possesses key elements in promoting intercultural competence. This study addressed whether a pre-service, ACTFL-guided teaching component of the curriculum had an …

“Under The Seams Runs The Pain”: Four Greek Sources And Analogues For The Modern Monster In Anne Carson’S Autobiography Of Red, Joshua M. Carmel

Student Publications

This work seeks to explore the monster figure in its evolution from the Classical to the contemporary literary canons. Using Geryon, a three-headed and red-hued monster, as the central figure and Carson’s 1998 verse novel Autobiography of Red, it evaluates the underpinnings of the alienated “other” and attempts to shed light on its role in modern society.

The Case Of Three Karen Families: Literacy Practices In A Family Literacy Classroom, Sabrina D. M. Quadros Apr 2013

The Case Of Three Karen Families: Literacy Practices In A Family Literacy Classroom, Sabrina D. M. Quadros

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

The lack of research in understanding the literacy practices of Karen families, influencing their schooling performance and language acquisition, leave professionals in the educational field limited in their knowledge about the forms of engagement of these families into American schooling. To better understand literacy practices in which Karen families engage, in this case study the author explores some of the literacy practices of Karen families when at school and in their homes. The author observed three Karen adult/parent learners during a period of three months, in an ESL family literacy program at Kennedy Elementary, in Lincoln, Nebraska. One interview with …

Seeking Care: Mindfulness, Reflexive Struggle, And Puffy Selves In Bullying, Keith Berry Apr 2013

Seeking Care: Mindfulness, Reflexive Struggle, And Puffy Selves In Bullying, Keith Berry

Communication Faculty Publications

What does it mean to become ourselves, to experience who we and others understand us to be? What might the process look like for younger selves who are immersed in the looming problem of bullying, and what is at stake regarding how we respond to its complex storyline? How can we engage ethnographic research that studies ourselves and others in ways that are also more caring than harmful for all persons involved? As senseless bullying continues, I seek meaningful answers to questions of becoming and identities within these intricate relational spaces. Yet as I perform this seeking, the search becomes …

This research project explores the concept of stigma consciousness as applied to the subculture of comic book fandom. Integrating the disciplines of social psychology and cultural studies, this study examines the dynamic and socially constructed nature of the stigma process as applied to the specific cultural form of the American comic book, while identifying and measuring several variables of potential influence on perceptions of the hierarchy of American cultural values. The purpose is to address an existing gap in the academic literature of fan studies in regards to the marginalization and stigmatization of fan cultures as experienced by the members …

The Journal Of Fred W. Fickett, Petra Banks

Consortium Library Prize Winners

When I was assigned to transcribe the Fred W. Fickett journal as part of a research project 1 was excited at what the project might bring. Little did 1 know that it would take me on a journey of Alaskan history and the surprising and interesting collection of documents relating to it. The process of transcribing Fickett's journal was both exciting and frustrating. Each page brought new discoveries and new complications. Fickett’s struggles along the way, his descriptions of the horrible things they were forced to eat as their stocks grew thinner and thinner, the difficulty travelling through slushy snow …
