Contesting The Marginalization Of Female Leadership In Sports: The Struggle For Equal Opportunities In Men's Collegiate And Professional Basketball, Caitlain Tinker May 2013

Contesting The Marginalization Of Female Leadership In Sports: The Struggle For Equal Opportunities In Men's Collegiate And Professional Basketball, Caitlain Tinker

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

This feminist critique interrogates the discourses and practices of gender discrimination in men's professional and collegiate sporting institutions in the United States. This study focuses on delineating and 'naming' the discriminatory ideologies that are (re)produced by dominant social and cultural institutions, revealing in the process how these practices (over)determine gender equality in the professional and collegiate sporting field. To this end, I perform a post-structuralist discourse analysis of what Louis Althusser calls the dominant 'ideological state apparatuses,' namely schools, the media and sporting institutions. I argue that these institutions coalesce to form a network of power that produces, reproduces, and …

Birthing Change: An Ethnographic Study Of The Alaska Family Health & Birth Center In Fairbanks, Alaska, Danielle M. Bennett May 2013

Birthing Change: An Ethnographic Study Of The Alaska Family Health & Birth Center In Fairbanks, Alaska, Danielle M. Bennett

Arctic and Northern Studies

This study examines the practices of the Alaska Family Health & Birth Center in order to understand how midwives help clients navigate the process of pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period with a high rate of success, as defined by a low cesarean rate, low mortality and morbidity, and high maternal satisfaction. How do the midwives prepare mothers to navigate the transformation and how do they address failure to progress during birth? This study analyzes birth as a rite of passage, which incorporates a culture's worldview and its practices. These outcomes are achieved by employing a positive, holistic view of …

Alaska Native Females: Understanding Body Image Dissatisfaction In A Culturally Diverse Country, Karaline M. Naegele May 2013

Alaska Native Females: Understanding Body Image Dissatisfaction In A Culturally Diverse Country, Karaline M. Naegele

Education

The current study was conducted to expand literature on body image dissatisfaction (BID) in Alaska Native females. As BID has been a concern for European American females, and many minority groups in America, professionals should examine all cultural groups for the presence of BID. The research was comprised of qualitative interviewing methods. Interviews were conducted with Alaska Native female participants between the ages of 18 and 23 years, attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Research questions addressed whether or not Alaska Native females experience BID, and if so how BID develops and manifests for this population. The study found that …

Understanding Institutional And Social Factors Relating To The Provisioning Of Water And Sanitation Services In Rural Alaska: Perspectives On Community Self-Reliance From Nine Native Villages Of Interior Alaska, Mercedes FáTima Ochante CáCeres

Arctic and Northern Studies

The global community acknowledges the essential nature of potable water and proper sanitation to the realization of human rights. Since 1959 federal, state and tribal efforts have focused on the goal of equitably providing these services to Alaska Native villages. However, demographic and geographical realities along with limited resources pose formidable challenges to achieving this lofty goal. This thesis explores the challenges to providing safe drinking water in remote Interior Alaska villages and their impact on self-reliance from the perspectives of knowledgeable village residents. Findings from a grounded theory analysis reveal that despite competence and concerted efforts to meet community …

An Evaluative Study Of Family Guides And Subsequent Design Of A Multi-Museum Third Grade Explorer's Guide, Katherine Hillman May 2013

An Evaluative Study Of Family Guides And Subsequent Design Of A Multi-Museum Third Grade Explorer's Guide, Katherine Hillman

Graduate Student Independent Studies

The idea for this project began with the evaluative study of a cultural organization's family guide. The results of that study, garnered from interviews with and observations of families, serves as the inspiration for a newly designed family guide intended for third graders and their families. The guide incorporates several museum visits with NY State Social Studies Scope and Sequence criteria and is based on personal teaching experience, age-relevant developmental guidelines, theoretical influences, a literature review of family learning and current family guides, as well as the results of the evaluative study.

Four Easy Pieces To Balance Privacy And Accountability In Public Higher Education: A Response To Wrongdoing Ranging From Petty Corruption To The Sandusky And Penn State Tragedy, Robert Steinbuch May 2013

Four Easy Pieces To Balance Privacy And Accountability In Public Higher Education: A Response To Wrongdoing Ranging From Petty Corruption To The Sandusky And Penn State Tragedy, Robert Steinbuch

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

This Article offers four legislative solutions—four easy pieces—to properly balance confidentiality and accountability in publicly financed higher education. It presents (1) a fix to the Federal Student Privacy Act that will prevent it from being misapplied as a defense to proper freedom of information act requests, (2) a bill to require the affirmative disclosure of admission practices at public schools receiving federal funding, (3) a bill that imposes direct costs, through the bankruptcy code, on schools that misrepresent their data regarding graduation and post-graduation opportunities, and (4) a revision of the federal freedom of information act to have it apply …

"Terrorism" In The Age Of Obama: The Rhetorical Evolution Of President Obama’S Discourse On The War On "Terror", Kelly Long

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Since September 11th, 2001, the word “terrorism” has helped to shape and been shaped by the culture of the American people who have come into contact with this concept on a daily basis. The use of “terrorism” and its companion the War on “Terror” carried with it certain ideological baggage that has serve as a prism in which the American people have viewed United States’ foreign affairs over the past decade. The fight against “terrorism” offered a pre-text for the U.S. to engage in two different wars, administrated a policy of hunting and killing “terrorists” across the globe, constructed policies …

Reclaiming Copyright From The Outside In: What The Downfall Hitler Meme Means For Transformative Works, Fair Use, And Parody, Aaron Schwabach May 2013

Reclaiming Copyright From The Outside In: What The Downfall Hitler Meme Means For Transformative Works, Fair Use, And Parody, Aaron Schwabach

Law Faculty Scholarship

¶Continuing advances in consumer information technology have made video editing, once difficult, into a relatively simple matter. The average consumer can easily create and edit videos, and post them online. Inevitably many of these posted videos incorporate existing copyrighted content, raising questions of infringement, derivative versus transformative use, fair use, and parody.¶ ¶This article looks at several such works, with its main focus on one category of examples: the Downfall Hitler meme. Downfall Hitler videos take as their starting point a particular sequence - Hitler's breakdown rant - from the 2004 German film Der Untergang [Downfall in the US]. The …

As The World Turns...Gay, Not Queer: Privileging Heteronormalized Representations Of Sexuality In American Soap Operas From 1977 - Present, Brett Edward King May 2013

As The World Turns...Gay, Not Queer: Privileging Heteronormalized Representations Of Sexuality In American Soap Operas From 1977 - Present, Brett Edward King

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

This project argues that American daytime soap operas, since the1970s, have adopted prevailing discursive ideas of queerness, re-articulated them, and introduced new discursive understandings of queerness into popular culture. Most often, these re-articulated representations reflect a heteronormalized model, owing to myriad historically-situated discourses related to human sexuality (e.g.,mental health, AIDS, and gender identity). This point is made through a broad examination of these shifting discourses, coupled with a direct analysis of salient queer characters and storylines that appeared concurrently within daytime serials. Building on Feminist and Media theory, this project includes Queer theory to frame a comprehensive historical-discursive understanding of queerness …

Paradox On The Playa: Uncovering The Contradictions Embedded In Burning Man, Shelby Anne Rothman May 2013

Paradox On The Playa: Uncovering The Contradictions Embedded In Burning Man, Shelby Anne Rothman

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

This project examines the contradictions embedded in the stated goals and organizational structure of Burning Man. Burning Man is something that is portrayed as positive in an alternative community; but in reality has its own hegemony and hierarchical bureaucracy. Through a discourse analysis and participant observation, this project shows that the ideologies of the culture are partially liberatory while most other aspects of Burning Man are hegemonic. The social contradictions of Burning Man are pointed out through employing theories of ideology, hegemony, place and space, heteronormativity, and subculture theory.

The Educational Attainment Of Minority Learners Who Attended 2-Year Colleges Compared To Caucasian Students, Angel N. Skinner

Theses and Dissertations

In this educational study, Caucasian and minority learners’ grade point averages and overall academic success were examined at learning institutions. Several minorities experienced problems with completing college courses at universities and community colleges. Individuals from various racial backgrounds had school enrollment issues compared to Caucasian students without these same issues. This analysis revealed factors that contributed to these learners’ decreased academic attainment. For this study, racial groups were the focus along with their need to improve their impoverished conditions. Minority students needed more educational services such as peer tutoring and academic counseling. These services offered learners the opportunity to expand …

Unpacking Producer / Consumer Relationships In Ethical Markets: A Look At Portland's Diy Sector, Renée Bogin Curtis May 2013

Unpacking Producer / Consumer Relationships In Ethical Markets: A Look At Portland's Diy Sector, Renée Bogin Curtis

Student Research Symposium

This presentation analyzes ethical consumption practices in alternative markets with a sector-specific focus evaluation of indicators and impacts. The paper reviews qualitative research conducted on Portland’s artisan economy with a focus on the independent or do-it-yourself (DIY) craft sector and presents follow up methods. General findings demonstrate ways market perceptions of sector participants reveal value-driven practices, illustrate impacts on production (through the role of place), and highlight impacts of market practices on producer accountability and consumer choices. Specific findings indicate drivers of the DIY market include integrity of production and consumption, communitarian values, minimal concern about competition, and attitudes of …

The Significance Of A Distinction Between A Sexual Act And A Sexual Identity, Nirvana Fairbanks May 2013

The Significance Of A Distinction Between A Sexual Act And A Sexual Identity, Nirvana Fairbanks

Student Research Symposium

This paper describes the distinction between a sexual act and a sexual identity as seen in different cultural contexts with regard to male homosexuality. It describes differences in how homosexual behavior is interpreted culturally. It discusses how more value is placed on certain sexual acts while there is less focus on a sexual identity and vice versa. For example, in Latin American culture, if two men are sexually involved with one another, it is the acts they perform that dictate how they are viewed, rather than the fact that they are two men engaging in sex together. In Western culture, …

Digital Zoom On The Video Boom: Close Readings Of Nigerian Films, Michael J. Laramee May 2013

Digital Zoom On The Video Boom: Close Readings Of Nigerian Films, Michael J. Laramee

Open Access Dissertations

Focusing on a selection of Nigerian video films— Living in Bondage (1992), Osuofia in London (2003), Saworoide (1999), Arugba (2010), Sitanda (2006), and Slave Warrior (2006)—and informed by in-depth interviews with four producer-directors, this dissertation establishes a model for combining industry contextualization with close shot by shot critical textual analysis in order to study products of Nollywood as individual films or works of art rather than solely as part of a phenomenon. After identifying an “arm’s length approach” in scholarship about Nollywood, a trend which identifies the video film revolution’s importance but does not incorporate close analysis of the films …

Ophthalmology and Visual Science Faculty Publications

Withaferin A (WFA) is a natural product that binds to soluble forms of the type III intermediate filament (IF) vimentin. Currently, it is unknown under what pathophysiological contexts vimentin is druggable, as cytoskeltal vimentin-IFs are abundantly expressed. To investigate druggability of vimentin, we exploited rabbit Tenon's capsule fibroblast (RbTCF) cell cultures and the rabbit glaucoma filtration surgical (GFS) model of fibrosis. WFA potently caused G₀/G₁ cell cycle inhibition (IC₅₀ 25 nM) in RbTCFs, downregulating ubiquitin E3 ligase skp2 and inducing p27(Kip1) expression. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß-induced myofibroblast transformation caused development of cell spheroids with numerous elongated invadopodia, which WFA blocked …

Locating Linguistic Power Relationships: A Glimpse Into Transnational Feminist Dialogue Through Comparison Of Major Feminist Publications In The Us And China (2000-2012), Shuli Han

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Does the use of English as a universal language in the transnational feminist dialogue empower women globally? In what way does English shape the flow of conversation by circulating some feminist knowledge while neglecting others? Through conducting content analysis research on major feminist publications in both China and the US, this thesis probes the limitations of English as “Lingua Franca” through comparing authors, topics, and the use of references in the Collections of Women’s Studies (CWS), the most prestigious feminist journal in China, with Signs, one of the core feminist journals in the US. Through the comparison …

A Pilot Test On The Role Of Power In Mate Choice, Addison Zhao

Honors Scholar Theses

To test two competing theories, social role and sexual strategies, a study was proposed to have participants evaluate dating profiles that varied in agency, communion, and status. Power was also manipulated to test for effects on likelihood to date an individual. To test methods used for the proposed study, a pilot study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a power prime task, a manipulation check for the power prime task, the attractiveness of 24 pictures, and an analysis of 12 profiles. The study found that power priming with analogies did not significantly lead to participants feeling powerful. This finding …

The Curandera As Xicanista: Hybrid Spirituality As A Means Of Provoking Social And Political Change, Megan Elizabeth Nieto May 2013

The Curandera As Xicanista: Hybrid Spirituality As A Means Of Provoking Social And Political Change, Megan Elizabeth Nieto

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the suitability of Chicana feminists or Xicanistas modeling themselves on the figure of the curandera, a Mexican American folk healer whose treatments must be utilized as a means of bettering not only the lives of individuals but society as a whole. It discusses the curandera characters depicted in Ana Castillo’s So Far from God and Sandra Cisneros’ Caramelo Puro Cuento in order to present the need for curanderas to find a balance between the interests of the Self and of society. These curanderas’ failure to provoke and participate in social change limits their effectiveness as models for …

A Invisibilidade Como Estratégia De Intervenção Urbana: Entrelaçamentos Entre O Teatro Invisível De Augusto Boal E Enfim Um Líder Do Erro Grupo, Pedro Bennaton

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Augusto Boal No Brasil E Suas Marcas Na Contemporaneidade, Alai Garcia Diniz May 2013

Augusto Boal No Brasil E Suas Marcas Na Contemporaneidade, Alai Garcia Diniz

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Whose Streets? Our Streets!: Identity, Institutions, And Privilege In Student Activism, Christina Limpert May 2013

Whose Streets? Our Streets!: Identity, Institutions, And Privilege In Student Activism, Christina Limpert

Cultural Foundations of Education - Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation is a qualitative ethnography of college student activism that examines student activist identity, and the role of social structures and privilege in activism. The study uses data from two years of in-depth fieldwork including over 18 months of participant observation and interviews with 13 key respondents. I took on this research project to better understand how students come to think of themselves as activists, how they speak about and experience activism, how activism--as a cultural text--tells a story about power and privilege, and to explore the role of education in the culture of activism. In this dissertation I …
