Us-American Protestant Missionaries And Translation In China 1894-1911, Mingyu Lu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "US-American Protestant Missionaries and Translation in China 1894-1911" Mingyu Lu discusses impact of and surrounding atmosphere between Protestant missionaries and Chinese intellectuals in translating Western texts. During the national crisis in 1894-1911, Protestant missionaries and Chinese intellectuals co-translated a large number of Western texts and adjusted their translations with regard to content and objectives. While the missionaries and their Chinese co-translators held different views towards the mapping of learning specifically towards Western learning, Chinese learning, and Christian messages, the translations were of significant impact in the period discussed. Lu argues that under the appeal of national renewal, …

Reinterpreting History And Gujin's (古今) Cultural Practices, Chao Liu Jun 2013

Reinterpreting History And Gujin's (古今) Cultural Practices, Chao Liu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Reinterpreting History and Gujin's (古今) Cultural Practices," Chao Liu analyzes the moral norms established by Gujin 古今 (Past and Present), a literary journal that emerged in occupied Shanghai in the 1940s, through the lens of historical narratives and the strategies Gujin intellectuals employed to subvert fundamentalist nationalism. Liu argues that Gujin created a cultural space between resistance and collaboration which challenged nationalistic imperatives and justified the subsistence of Chinese people under the Japanese occupation by presenting its own principles of social morals and erecting a pantheon of historical figures. Further, Liu posits …

Wait Upon Ishiguro, Englishness, And Class, Mustapha Marrouchi Jun 2013

Wait Upon Ishiguro, Englishness, And Class, Mustapha Marrouchi

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Wait upon Ishiguro, Englishness, and Class" Mustapha Marrouchi analyzes Kazuo Ishiguro's novels with focus on the writer's interest in Japanese culture and his preoccupation with matters of class in England. Marrouchi analyzes Ishiguro's novels as located astride of East, West, and the in-between: his precise, exquisitely made stories are shadowed by absences and silences, balanced "between elegy and irony" (Rushdie) and this is so whether the speaker is the obsessive butler in The Remains of the Day or one of the demented heroes in The Unconsoled or When We Were Orphans or the Japanese, guilty or exiled, …

The Narration Of Transnational Territory In Kingston's China Men And Kim's 검은 꽃 (Black Flower), Ju Young Jin Jun 2013

The Narration Of Transnational Territory In Kingston's China Men And Kim's 검은 꽃 (Black Flower), Ju Young Jin

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "The Narration of Transnational Territory in Kingston's China Men and Kim's 검은 꽃 (Black Flower)" Ju Young Jin analyzes Maxine Hong Kingston's and Young-Ha Kim's novels both of which feature East Asian indentured workers in the U.S. and Mexico, respectively. Jin traces the way in which the transnational subjects in the two novels create a textual territory by displacing national histories in a period that has witnessed an increase in indentured workers from East Asia to American continents. Kim creates an apocryphal history of the Korean presence in the New World reimagining the forgotten past by interweaving …

The Myth Of Nothing In Classics And Asian Indigenous Films, Sheng-Mei Ma Jun 2013

The Myth Of Nothing In Classics And Asian Indigenous Films, Sheng-Mei Ma

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "The Myth of Nothing in Classics and Asian Indigenous Films" Sheng-mei Ma discusses how the desert and the permafrost region are terra incognita, except nomads and Indigenous peoples. Given the extreme conditions of these forbidding places, Western modernity sees its own shadow cast on such black holes on earth. Since the 1960s, classic Hollywood or art house films by David Lean, Akira Kurosawa, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Anthony Minghella, and Sergei Bodrov romanticize and/or mythologize what is perceived as modernity's mirror image. Indie films in recent decades, particularly by Asian Indigenous filmmakers Byambasuren Davaa, Zacharias Kunuk, and Khyentse …

Hollywood And Shanghai Cinema In The 1930s, Adrian Song Xiang Jun 2013

Hollywood And Shanghai Cinema In The 1930s, Adrian Song Xiang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

I In his article "Hollywood and Shanghai Cinema in the 1930s" Adrian Song Xiang argues that Hollywood films provided a repertoire of images Chinese filmmakers of the 1930s adapted to their films. Xiang analyses Yu Sun's (孙瑜) 1932 film 野玫瑰 (Wild Rose), whose leading female character Xiaofeng was adapted from Hollywood actress Mary Pickford's iconic rambunctious teenager screen persona, particularly from the 1922 film Tess of the Storm Country. The modernist connotations of Tess' teenage girl character were changed in the process to meet Chinese cultural and political needs. Xiang's analysis suggests an adjustment in the history of early …

Virtuality, Nationalism, And Globalization In Zhang's Hero, Ping Zhu Jun 2013

Virtuality, Nationalism, And Globalization In Zhang's Hero, Ping Zhu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Virtuality, Nationalism, and Globalization in Zhang's Hero" Ping Zhu examines how Yimou Zhang's martial arts film dislodges the historical tale from its spatiotemporal context by creating virtual images, characters, narratives, and ideologies, and presents the virtual idea of tianxia (天下) (all under heaven) as an active mode of participation in the virtual global. Amidst the surge of virtuality in its cinematic space, with Hero Zhang aims to eclipse the national by a higher order: a homogenizing and harmonizing order that originates in traditional Chinese culture and that is compatible with the post-9/11 world order. However, Zhu …

Cultural Hybridization In A 1930s Taiwanese Popular Song, Mei-Wen Lee, Timothy P. Urban

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Cultural Hybridization in a 1930s Taiwanese Popular Song" Mei-Wen Lee and Timothy P. Urban present a comparison of the three different sets of lyrics used for the melody of the 1930s Taiwanese popular song, "Moonlight Sorrow": Taiwanese lyrics used by Yu-Xian Deng and Tian-Wang Chou in their 1933 arrangement, Japanese lyrics by Kurihara Hakuya from the late 1930s, and Mandarin lyrics added by Nu Chuan in the 1960s. Lee and Urban examine three orchestral settings of the "Moonlight Sorrow" melody. In the first orchestral version Japanese composer Hayakawa Masaaki uses the melody in a manner similar to …

Crossed Boundaries In Musical Culture Between Asia And The West, Kheng K. Koay, Mikel Ledee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Crossed Boundaries in Musical Culture between Asia and the West" Kheng K. Koay and Mikel LeDee examine Tony Prabowo's Pasar Loak (Flea Market) for soprano and percussions and Chinary Ung's Grand Alap (A Window in the Sky). Composers Prabowo and Ung adopt modernist techniques from Western and traditional Asian music cultures in their compositions. Koay and LeDee explore aspects which broaden the presentation of sound in the two selected compositions and the background influences of Western and Asian music on the two composers. Prabowo and Ung absorb new experiences and embrace music that excites them and Prabowo, …

Rethinking Theatrical Images Of The New Woman In China's Republican Era, Li Guo Jun 2013

Rethinking Theatrical Images Of The New Woman In China's Republican Era, Li Guo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Rethinking Theatrical Images of the New Woman in China's Republican Era" Li Guo analyses the multivalent representations of the New Woman and posits that they encompass a broad array of blended feminine identities following the introduction of Western literary and cultural trends into Chinese culture. The tensions between ideological discourses about nation, gender, and politics as revealed in the plays of the republican period reveal the many underlying cultural paradigms and the processes in which dramatists Sinicized foreign models of the New Woman to appeal to their domestic audiences. Guo explores how the playwrights' gendered viewpoints contribute …

Globalization And Theater Spectacles In Asia, I-Chun Wang Jun 2013

Globalization And Theater Spectacles In Asia, I-Chun Wang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Globalization and Theater Spectacles in Asia" I-Chun Wang discusses how performance is an integral part of cultural discourse: in industrially advanced Asian nations governments started to examine the relationship between cultural discourse and popular culture, cultural identity and tourist attractions and artists have become prominent participants in this development in particular with regard to theater performance, an activity with old traditions in Asian cultures. With the uptake of technology and in some cases Western innovation, Asian theater performance not only became an important part of social and cultural discourse, it rejuvenated itself. Wang posits that Asian theater …

Session 3-3-A: The ‘Circles Concept’ Of Gambling Addiction: An Empowered Framework For Change, Harry B. Mayr May 2013

Session 3-3-A: The ‘Circles Concept’ Of Gambling Addiction: An Empowered Framework For Change, Harry B. Mayr

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The original ‘Circles Concept of (Gambling) Addiction’ was developed by Harry Mayr in 1982, while working as an addictions counsellor in a community-based health centre. It has always been a ‘user friendly’ concept … applicable and understood by people from all cultures, across all ages, and with or without an addiction issue. Years later, people have informed Mr Mayr how they still remember ‘those circles’, and how the concept helped them.

The ‘Circles Concept of (Gambling) Addiction’ is therefore a concept remembered as much for its visual cues as its verbal explanation – and thus applicable across languages, cognitive and …

The Mutant Factor. Transformations And Mutations Of The Monstrous In Contemporary Ibero-American Texts, Salvador Luis Raggio May 2013

The Mutant Factor. Transformations And Mutations Of The Monstrous In Contemporary Ibero-American Texts, Salvador Luis Raggio

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation explores recent changes in the category of the monstrous by extrapolating the biological notion of mutation into the context of Ibero-American novels, comic books, and films. By analyzing late twentieth century and early twenty-first century textual and visual narratives from Spain and Latin America, this study proposes a reformulation of the monster paradigm and signals specific contemporary representations that move away from a monolithic and fixed category to a more relative one. Consequently, this dissertation suggests a new sensibility towards grand narratives in the figure of the mutant, a symptom of imminent change, heterogeneity, and variety. Conceived as …

Session 2-3-F: Gaming Applications Of A Forgotten Distribution, Rohan J. Dalpatadu, Ashok K. Singh May 2013

Session 2-3-F: Gaming Applications Of A Forgotten Distribution, Rohan J. Dalpatadu, Ashok K. Singh

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Introduction

The bonus game has become a very important part of the slot machine, as indicated by a large number of patent applications and patents (Bennett, 2000; Slomiany and Grupp, 2000; Vancurra, 2000; Baerlocher et al, 2002; Jaffe et al, 2002; Cannon and Donovan, 2003; Dickerson, 2005). Therefore, probability distributions suitable for developing games are very much in need. In this study, we illustrate how a forgotten discrete probability distribution, viz. the negative hypergeometric distribution, can be used to develop bonus games for slot machines, and also to analyze existing bonus games. The mean and the variance for this distribution …

The Candombe Drumming Of Uruguay: Contextualizing Uruguayan Identity Through Afro-Uruguayan Rhythm, Clifford Todd Sutton May 2013

The Candombe Drumming Of Uruguay: Contextualizing Uruguayan Identity Through Afro-Uruguayan Rhythm, Clifford Todd Sutton

Open Access Dissertations

This essay examines the drum rhythms associated with Uruguayan candombe, and Afro-Uruguayan music and dance promoted nationally and internationally as Uruguayan cultural heritage. At the heart of this cultural form, both musically and symbolically, is the drum (commonly referred to in Uruguay as tambor), along with collective drumming performances known as llamadas. Scholars of Afro-Uruguayan history, culture, and music are quick to acknowledge the significance of the drum to candombe, linking it to Afro-Uruguayan discourses and the politics of national identity. However, many of the resources that would assist musicians who are interested in learning and understanding these rhythms and …

Sobject, Warren Iii Lloyd May 2013

Sobject, Warren Iii Lloyd

Theses

Attempting to find a solution to the problem of how to make art that is both critical yet participatory, sobject explores subject/object relations within the development of the medical gaze in the history of medico-clinical perception and Modern Art. Sobject works both analytically, tracing these apparently parallel developments, and synthetically as it forms a methodological approach from the interpolating spaces of each. It locates and analyzes histories of objective instrumentation between subjects and objects, then works to open and redistribute these into new possibilities. It does this by developing an artistic practice that engages with contemporary forms of institutionalized instrumentation, …

Mismatch In Higher Education: Neoliberal Shortcomings In Intrinsic Value In The University, Jake A. Grahn May 2013

Mismatch In Higher Education: Neoliberal Shortcomings In Intrinsic Value In The University, Jake A. Grahn

Student Research Initiative

This research focuses on uncovering how the neoliberal atmosphere in which we find ourselves has influenced and socialized students to view college as a transaction between a buyer and a seller. Neoliberalism promotes free trade, open markets, and consumerism. How does neoliberal ideology affect student choices (i.e. schools, classes, teachers, etc.) that support and undermine neoliberalism itself? How does the internalization of the student-as-customer model contradict or reinforce neoliberal higher education? Higher education has become a complex institution, and free-market trade may benefit or hinder students. Approximately 31 open-ended interviews were conducted with students at BSU, and I conducted a …

A Study On Contemporary Literary Theory: Reflecting, Adjusting And Deepening, Daren Lai May 2013

A Study On Contemporary Literary Theory: Reflecting, Adjusting And Deepening, Daren Lai

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Recently, the change and development of the contemporary literary theory have started a new cycle of historical movement which interweaves the interaction between breakthroughs, inductions and establishments. To respond to the resultant changes and new issues, it is necessary to adjust the theoretical standpoint and approaches. Further construction, innovation and development of the contemporary literary theory pose new requirements in the form of three returns: a) from pursuing cultural studies to reverting on literary studies, b) from interpreting the phenomena to focusing on practical issues, and c) from the production of knowledge to the reconstruction of theory. Under the present …

Signs Of The Return To Literary Studies From The Debate On Literary Canon, Wenfang Yao May 2013

Signs Of The Return To Literary Studies From The Debate On Literary Canon, Wenfang Yao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The debate on literary canon in 1970s raised the cultural issue behind literary canonization and promoted the turn from literary study to cultural studies. The turn, however, has also resulted in a return to literary studies, which could be seen in the 1990s arguments of some representative scholars engaged in the debate. Scholars such as J. Guillory, Harold Bloom and Jonathan Culler have all expressed that the canonization of literary texts should center on literature and aesthetics. Their common appeal also implies an inherent logic which helps to reconcile the debate on literary canon.

The Era Of Open-Ended Dual Life, Hirosuke Hyodo May 2013

The Era Of Open-Ended Dual Life, Hirosuke Hyodo

Publications and Research

Although missing in mainstream studies of American immigration in the post-1965 Act era, the volume of native Japanese living in the U.S. today (called the shin-issei) is three times that of the prewar Japanese-American community on the U.S. mainland. Their curious absence from the mainstream studies results from the traditionally entrenched frame, ‘immigrants’, that does not unfit their migrant patterns. This paper explores the shin-issei, portraying their characters in three parts: (1) akogare (‘longing or desire’) for the West grown in Japan in the late nineteenth century, (2) a statistical sketch of the shin-issei over the last several decades, and …
