Video Analysis: An Efficient Tool For The Modern Collegiate Baseball Hitting Coach, Eduardo Cornejo

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this project is to focus on how video analysis can be an essential teaching tool for today's hitting coaches, specifically for those who look to become more efficient with limited time for instruction. This project attempts to enhance the efforts of collegiate baseball coaches to effectively teach a complex activity so that they can fulfill the other demands of their job. It is commonly known that college coaches have a rigorous schedule of recruiting future student-athletes and administrative duties not related to on-field instruction. A literature review was conducted to show how video analysis could be a …

Arts-Based Research In Cultural Mental Health, Erminia Colucci Jan 2013

Arts-Based Research In Cultural Mental Health, Erminia Colucci

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Arts can be employed as a powerful tool to elicit thinking and discussion (thus generating and gathering data), as well as a means to report and disseminate findings. The arts have been used for decades in research and practice and they are increasingly being used, also because of a counter-movement to the dominance of positivist epistemologies. However, health sciences continue to be reticent toward embracing the application of art in research. This has resulted in limited art use even in disciplines such as Psychiatry and Psychology, which could arguably benefit most from such practices.

The Impact Of Social Context On Preschoolers’ Flexibility, Li Qu, Lin Shuhui Audrey, Low Pei Jun, Ng Hui Qun Jan 2013

The Impact Of Social Context On Preschoolers’ Flexibility, Li Qu, Lin Shuhui Audrey, Low Pei Jun, Ng Hui Qun

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The current study investigates whether social interaction without communication between partners may influence preschoolers’ flexibility. Fifty-three 5 year old Singaporean children were randomly assigned to three conditions of a block sorting task (Fawcett & Garton, 2005): playing individually, cooperating with another player, and competing against another player. To control for individual differences, before the block sorting task children were given four cognitive tasks testing vocabulary, short-term memory, and executive function, as well as two affective scales on mood and motivation. Separate one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) showed that although they performed the same on the cognitive tasks and the affective …

The Effect Of Socioeconomic Status On Student Perceptions Of Instructional Communication Behaviors, Samuel A. Crecelius Jan 2013

The Effect Of Socioeconomic Status On Student Perceptions Of Instructional Communication Behaviors, Samuel A. Crecelius

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In spite of desegregation and efforts to provide equitableEducation for all students, minorities and students living in poverty continue to underperform their peers.Education theorists have attributed this achievement gap to a cultural mismatch between students and their teachers and schools. At the same time, instructional communication research has found that cultural differences may influence student perceptions of teacher communication behaviors and that these behaviors have an effect on learning outcomes. Interestingly, while race has received extensive study in the instructional communication literature, little research has examined the role of socioeconomic status on students' perceptions of instructor communication behaviors. The current …

Can Digital Humanities Mean Transformative Critique?, Alexis Lothian, Amanda Phillips Jan 2013

Can Digital Humanities Mean Transformative Critique?, Alexis Lothian, Amanda Phillips

The Journal of e-Media Studies

What would digital scholarship and the humanities disciplines be like if they centered around processes and possibilities of social and cultural transformation as well as institutional preservation? If they centered around questions of labor, race, and gender and justice at personal, local, and global scales? If their practitioners considered not only how the academy might reach out to underserved communities, but also how the kinds of knowledge production nurtured elsewhere could transform the academy itself? Exploring the conversations that have centered around the Twitter hashtag #transformDH in the past two years, this essay argues that such questions are not hypothetical …

Explaining China’S Wildlife Crisis: Cultural Tradition Or Politics Of Development, Peter J. Li Jan 2013

Explaining China’S Wildlife Crisis: Cultural Tradition Or Politics Of Development, Peter J. Li

Threatened and Endangered Animal Populations Collection

This chapter is about China’s wildlife crisis. As the following sections attempt to demonstrate, abuse of and assault on wildlife in captivity and in the wild have reached an unprecedented level on the Chinese mainland in the reform era (1978–present). Shocking brutality against wildlife animals has been frequently exposed by Chinese and international media. To readers outside East Asia, they ask if the Chinese are culturally indifferent to animal suffering. Indeed, does the Chinese culture sanction cruelty to animals? Or is it the contemporary politics of economic development that is more directly responsible for the crisis?

A Critical Review Of Reflectivity, Andragogy, And Confucianism, John Henschke, Victor Wang, Karen Fay Jan 2013

A Critical Review Of Reflectivity, Andragogy, And Confucianism, John Henschke, Victor Wang, Karen Fay

Adult Education Faculty Works

The link between Confucian humanism, Mezirow' theory of reflectivity, and the convergence of a worldwide concept of andragogy (the art and science of helping adults learn) articulated by Savicevle, Knowles, Mezirow's theory has increasingly developed to integrate inner reflection expressed through transformed perspectives and decision and action, and andragogy has focused on facilitation of collaborative interaction and self-direction in learning involving the whole person. To appreciate the basis of these three schools of theory, this chapter presents a discussion of these originating theorists. As an introductory thought, the following quotations illustrate how Confucius' thought has long been valued and aspired …

Are The Kids Alright? A Critique And Agenda For Taking Youth Subcultures Seriously, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl Jan 2013

Are The Kids Alright? A Critique And Agenda For Taking Youth Subcultures Seriously, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl

Sociology Faculty Publications

Researchers have long been fascinated with youth subcultures. Decades of study have yielded several competing paradigms, which attempt to interpret these subcultures in diverse ways, with each succeeding paradigm criticizing, and attempting to improve on, those that came before it. Rather than offering criticism of a specific youth studies paradigm, this article provides a critique of this body of theory as a whole by delineating several theoretical assumptions that have persisted across these perspectives. These include: (1) the tendency to group all youth phenomena under a monolithic conceptual umbrella; (2) a preoccupation on the part of researchers with style and …

The Equivalence Of Internet Versus Paper-Based Surveys In It/Is Adoption Research In Collectivistic Cultures: The Impact Of Satisficing, Jiaming Fang, Chao Wen, Victor Prybutok Jan 2013

The Equivalence Of Internet Versus Paper-Based Surveys In It/Is Adoption Research In Collectivistic Cultures: The Impact Of Satisficing, Jiaming Fang, Chao Wen, Victor Prybutok

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

An increasing proportion of information technology (IT)/information system adoption research collects data using online surveys. However, a paucity of research assesses the equivalence of paper-based versus Internet-based surveys in collectivistic cultures. Furthermore, no theoretical or empirical research investigates how cultural differences between collectivistic and individualistic cultures influence the measurement equivalence (ME) of these survey modes. To explore these issues, online and paper-based surveys with comparable samples were carried out in both an individualistic (the USA) and a collectivistic culture (China). Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to examine the ME across both survey modes in these different cultures. Results indicate that …

Challenges And Opportunities In Business Higher Education, Dale H. Shao, Lawrence Shao, Ralph E. Mckinney

Management Faculty Research

The catchphrase “Today’s Challenges Lead to Tomorrow’s Opportunities” succinctly describes the environment currently relevant to the area of business higher education. The future of business higher education in the 21st Century will involve dramatic changes that will lead to a vastly different business education environment than we have today. By recognizing opportunities and preparing strategies to embrace these changes, business schools will be better able to prepare for what lies ahead. There will be new opportunities to try strategic initiatives that could not have been previously attempted. Business schools must look for new alternatives and utilize a proactive approach for …

Who's Allowed To Ride The Short Bus? Un-Defining Disability, Hannah Widdifield Jan 2013

Who's Allowed To Ride The Short Bus? Un-Defining Disability, Hannah Widdifield

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

This article uses personal testimony as a vehicle for deconstructing the theory and literature of disability studies. The definition of disability is traced from the term's origins to its present-day representations in popular culture, and I end with a look toward the future of the subject in academic settings and in society at large. The fictional character of Artie Abrams is considered alongside the real-life figure of Oscar Pistorius in an attempt to analyze the dangers and motives behind stereotypes surrounding the "disabled character." Throughout the article, anecdotal excerpts are included to emphasize the importance of the personal perspective in …

Building A Culturally Appropriate Intervention Program To Assist Children’S Rehabilitation After The Sichuan Earthquake Of 12 May, 2008, Melissa Gao, Daphne Keats, Shuguang Wang

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Based on the findings of the survey and the interviews, the work in this stage of the research was to build a culturally acceptable program to aid the children’s recovery. The study was conducted in three project sites of a village, a large school and a hospital, all in the same locations as the baseline research. A group-based participatory approach is being employed to develop a variety of activities, in progressive steps dealing with children’s themes of rehabilitation in their own contexts. The total program includes a range of activities differing according to age, category, and site. To ensure comparability, …
